Scent of Jasmine
2008-05-07 16:37:00 Jasmine or Jessamine (Jasminum) (from Persian yasmin, i.e. "gift from God"[1][2], via Arabic[3]) is a genus of shrubs and vines in the olive family (Oleaceae),with about 200 species, native to tropical and warm temperate regions of the Old World. The majority of species grow as climbers on other plants or on structures. The leaves can be either evergreen or deciduous, and are opposite in most species; leaf shape is simple, trifoliate or pinnate with up to nine leaflets. Jasmine tea is also very efficient against coughs, sore throats or other problems to do with the bronchites. More About: Jasmine

Light is everything
2008-05-01 15:58:00 A simple picture in a nice light . Without the sunlight creating those shadows, this photo would be plain and dead looking. It would be very boring and a picture without any "message". Light is everything in photography. The word photography is derived from the Greek language: "phos" = light and "graphos" = writing. In translation that means: "writing with light".

And the Eagle flies...
2008-04-22 17:58:00 This was the first time in my life I have seen eagles flying in the wild so close. I wish, I would have had my longer 600mm lens with me to capture those "Bald Head Eagles " better! There were for sure five of them circling over my head, loud screaming - while down in the water the fisher man enjoyed the tranquility of the Cooper River and tried to catch some good pieces for his dinner. The Angel Oak in Spring
2008-04-19 14:59:00 I have visited the old "Angel Oak" again, I wanted to see her in her new "spring time dress". But there were 3 buses waiting outside the parking lot and for sure more than over 120 school kids running around and climbing up and down in the tree like little monkeys. So I had to wait until the big fun was over and they are gone - and happily, 10 minutes later the whole place was empty again, quite again and only the singing birds and my clicking camera to hear.I made earlier already a post about the "Angel Oak",read it here: http://sues-daily-photos.blogspot.com/200 8/02/angel-oak.html More About: Spring , Nature photography

The Ashley River, SC
2008-04-10 14:56:00 The Ashley River is a river in South Carolina, rising from the Wassamassaw and Great Cypress Swamps in Western Berkeley County. It consolidates its main channel about 5 miles west of Summerville, widening into a brackish, tidal estuary just south of Fort Dorchester. The much wider Ashley joins the Cooper River in Charleston to form the Charleston Harbor before discharging into the Atlantic Ocean. The river was named for Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury and chief Lord Proprietor of the Carolina Colony. Charleston was founded on the western bank of the Ashley in 1670 (at Charles Towne Landing), before moving across to its current peninsular location ten years later. More About: Nature photography

The meanings of the Iris
2008-04-07 16:38:00 With striking uniqueness and beauty, irises have rich meanings, and when given as gifts, they can convey deep sentiments. With over 200 varieties in a wide spectrum of colors, the iris, which fittingly takes its name from the Greek word for "rainbow," can be found in virtually every part of the world, growing both naturally and in farms. While garden irises can come in any of these many varieties, the flower's cut versions are mostly blue (the most popular type), white, and yellow. The iris's history is rich, dating back to Ancient Greek times when the Greek Goddess Iris , the messenger of the gods and the personification of the rainbow, acted as the link between heaven and earth. Purple irises were planted over the graves of women to summon the Goddess to guide the dead in their journey. Ancient Egyptian kings marveled in the iris?s exotic nature, and drawings have been found of the flower in a number of Egyptian palaces. During the Middle Ages, the meaning of irises became lin... The Patriot Point - USS Yorktown CV - 10
2008-04-01 15:14:00 The Ravanel Bridge seen from the Patriot Point A close up of the USS Yorktown CV-10 aircraft carrierFull view of the aircraft carrier USS YORKTOWN CV-10 At nearly 900 feet in length, weighing in at more than 27,000 ton and bristling with weapons and war planes, the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) was one of the most imposing modern marvels on the planet during WWII.But it was her crew, some 2,500 sailors, who brought her to life, generated her fearless spirit and christened her with the nickname The Fighting Lady. CV-10?s keel was laid on December 1, 1941 at Newport News, Virginia. This was a new breed of ship; the Essex class carrier. Longer, wider and heavier than its predecessor, the Essex class could hold more aircraft and became the backbone of the WWII Navy. Originally, CV-10 was to be known as the Bon Homme Richard but was renamed in honor of the only American carrier lost in the pivotal Battle of Midway, USS Yorktown (CV-5). The Cooper River
More articles from this author:2008-03-31 15:32:00 The Cooper River is a river in the U.S. state of South Carolina. Several cities are located along the river, primarily Charleston. Short and wide, the Wando River joins the Cooper, then it flows south and unites with the Ashley River in the estuary forming Charleston Harbor. The Cooper River was connected to the Santee River by a canal built in the late 18th century. Today Lake Moultrie and two canals connect the Cooper River to Lake Marion. The Cooper River was formerly spanned by both the Silas N. Pearman Bridge, and the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge. These bridges have since been demolished and replaced by the recently completed Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge. The new bridge is higher than the old ones, to accommodate larger modern ships coming into the Port of Charleston. In service since August 8, 1929, the Grace Memorial Bridge was the oldest of the three. Named for the commissioner who inspired the state's highway system and parallel to the Grace Memorial Bridge, the Pearman Bri... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
