Prehistoric remains predating the Christian era have been found, but the earliest inscription date only from the 9th century. Buddhism arrived from India during the first few centuries. A.D. followed by Hinduism and trade contacts with china. Relations with Java begin in the 11th century, but full control of Bali did not come until 1334 and lasted over just 100 years. A division of the realm followed as factions of the various Balinese ruling houses vied of power over the nex...

How will Good Spatial Data on Indonesia’s Forest Resources be Use?
2008-02-12 04:00:00
Accurate, up-to-date, reliable spatial information on Indonesia’s forest resources can be analyzed and used to improve decision-making processes, develop effective policies and reforms that can mitigate deforestation, detect illegal logging and forest conversion, and inform spatial planning processes. It can also be used to monitor forest cover change and carbon emissions.

Does Spatial Data on Indonesia’s Forest Need to be Improved?
2008-02-12 03:55:00
Forest management and policy in Indonesia suffer at all level from in adequate data of poor or inconsistent quality. The last national assessment of land cover and land use (RePPProT) was made in the early 1980s, and rapid deforestation and changing land use since then have rendered it obsolete. A consensus based framework to reliability to reliably monitor changes in forest cover and land use also does not exist. This means that there is no reliable system in place to collect and analyze forest cover data. Decentralization has also meant that forest sector information on the legal boundaries and licenses of logging concessions, industrial timber plantations are no longer kept in a central database. Instead, this information is scattered throughout the Indonesian archipelago in is not systematically collected or archived. Moreover, most of the data on the legal boundaries and licenses of large-scale forest enterprises is only recorded on paper maps which needed to be digitized...

2008-02-12 03:49:00
Community mapping is a tool that allows indigenous people to map their land and forest resources in a participatory way. It can be a tool to resolve conflicts. Why? Because it can also be used to mediate conflicts between the government and indigenous people and provides an avenue for both parties to negotiate and agree upon spatial plans and customary boundaries. In other words, community mapping can be used to help indigenous people to gain recognition to their land rights and to have a say in natural resources management. Community mapping was first applied in Indonesia in conservation area, such as Kayan Mentarang National Park and Wasur National Park. In these area, it was used to: identify the land use rights of indigenous people, assist indigenous people to gain government recognition of their customary lands and to allow them to have a say in conservation management. It is now widely used upon Indonesian archipelago and often applied as a tool to resolve conflicts between...
