Theme Day

It is the first of the month again, which means it is theme day. This month's theme was street lights or street signs. I chose this street lamp because street lamps in general seem to be the theme that Joplin has adopted during its downtown renovation, calling the historic district "Sunshine Lamp":109 (wow) cities are participating in today's theme. I (finally) got to ride on Joplin's new trolley system today. It's not actually a trolley, but rather a bus done up to look like a trolley, with old wooden seats and these elaborate windows.I have a few issues with the system (odd times, only one bus, no service on Sunday, etc...) but honestly I'm just thrilled to have some form of public transportation in Joplin. I will certainly be supporting the new system, and I'm sure improvements will be made with time.

Pierce City had it's annual town celebration, "Howdy Neighbor Days" (and, no, I'm not making that up), last night. The carnival part was about the same as any other, but they did have quite a number or good carnival foods.

They have been doing road work near Hwy 71 for quite a long time now. The highway, which connects Joplin to Kansas City, is going to be upgraded to interstate quality and connected with I-49. Eventually.

A row of mailboxes like this is a pretty common sight in the rural Ozarks. It usually signifies many people living close together fairly far away from the main road. This usually is the case with families who have been in the area for many generations. Many houses will be built on the original land owned by the family.These mailboxes, however, belong to homes in a subdivision close to the road.
