2007-07-01 17:25:00 This month's theme was "the color red", which gave me plenty of opportunity to photograph around Joplin. One sees red everywhere it seems. But the photo I chose is this doorway belonging to a hair salon near 20th street, downtown. Northern Water Snake
2007-06-26 15:07:00 I love snakes, and I usually try to get as close as possible (but not close enough to disturb them) when I get a chance to see them. Usually. In this case I kept a healthy distance. Why? This is a Norther n Water Snake . This species is nonvenomous, yet they have a notorious bad temper. Along with this disposition, they also have an anticoagulant in their saliva, which makes wounds from their bites bleed excessively.Not a snake to mess with... More About: Hern
Fallout Shelter
2007-06-24 16:08:00 There are at least a couple of these "fallout shelters" around town. All cities of a certain size were required to have designated fallout shelters, just in case. 2007-06-23 15:34:00 Fred and Red Chili is locally famous for its "Spaghetti Red", a dish of spaghetti covered with chili with the option of onions and pickles. I've never eaten there, but I hear of people making special trips to Joplin just for that signature dish. More About: Fred

2007-06-14 16:13:00 We've had massive amounts of rain recently, and you can certainly see the results around Joplin. Flash flood warnings have been ongoing for the past few days, and many of the creeks have been up. This one, Shoal Creek, is so flooded that many trees are covered in water and the walkways near it have been shut down. More About: Flooding , Odin , Flood

2007-06-07 14:58:00 Some decor on the Spanish-style "Mans ion " on the Missouri Southern campus. This building was built in 1920 but has since fallen into disrepair. The building is currently being renovated, and will hopefully be in use sometime soon. More About: Sion

2007-06-06 15:32:00 A fence post at Old Newtonia cemetery. Old Newtonia is very near the site of a Civil War battle and houses the graves of several soldiers. More About: Fence

2007-06-02 17:04:00 The Gateway Cream ery in Joplin. This building recently housed a very nice restaurant, bar, and a stage for live music, but it is currently closed. The building itself is over 100 years old, and it was formerly used as a warehouse for store milk products for delivery around town.
