Lamp post detail from Venice
2008-02-01 18:41:00
A few posts back I mentioned how difficult it is to take a bad photo in Venice . Here is a proof of that. Even a detail of a lamp post on St Mark's Square can make a nice motive.

Photo trip to Venice
2008-01-31 18:20:00
When we decided to visit Venice during the Caneval (Italians call it Carnevale di Venezia) there was six of us. However one of our companions had to cancel at the last minute. We all agreed to make a photo trip out of it, so we scheduled an early start on Saturday morning. After some delay (one of the participants overslept), we were on the highway heading for Venice. It was a three hour ride

Venice Carnival 2008
2008-01-28 07:21:00
Carnival of Venice or Carnevale di Venezia - as Italians call it, is the place to be these days. This year I went there too! A couple of days ago me and M. were going through our options on how to spend this last Saturday. One of our options was skiing. We were invited to join a group of friends on a skiing day-trip to Austria. We almost agreed to go for it, when another option came up. Four

Trevalli Ski-opening official stats
2008-01-21 07:15:00
For a couple of years now the official Dolomiti Superski homepage is offering some statistics for you to check out after you get back home. I always try to remember and check them out. This year they upgraded the statistics with a graphical representation. This is how a summary of my four days of skiing in Trevalli looks like. I noticed the numbers are a bit lower than usually. The reason

The hard part of skiing
2008-01-17 08:44:00
Since in Trevalli there are no night skiing opportunities, we had to find something else to do during late hours. It is quite usual for our group to cause some mild disturbance in an otherwise peaceful family vacation environment. This time however it was not the case. There was this group of 18 men (aged 40 to 50) stationed in the same building with us and they were true party animals. We

Ski season opening in Trevalli
2008-01-14 07:04:00
I finally (with some substantial delay, but hey in the end I did it and that's what counts) decided to share some info on how my first skiing trip of this season went. We had a great time and will definitely try to do it again. The only problem with this kind of ski-opening trips can be snow, or better put - the lack of it. It is always a bit of a gamble since you have to book the accommodation

A crappy new year
2008-01-11 15:02:00
The new year has not started all that well for me. I have not been feeling well since the New Year 's Eve. There have been some good days since, but mostly I've been feeling quite crappy. It all began on the New Year's Eve. With a small group of friends we went to a mountain cottage under the Vršič pass. It stands at 1226 m and at this time of year we were hoping for a couple days in an
What's been going on...
2007-12-12 08:18:00
I didn't want to break my Egyptian adventure apart by posting about other stuff. That doesn't mean nothing was going on since we got back to Slovenia. Actually quite a few things happened that are worth mentioning. Almost immediately after returning home, I went to the seaside for a week together with my girlfriend. You know how it is - we needed some time off after a vacation in Egypt. ;)

Recap of my Egyptian Adventure
2007-12-06 07:53:00
Let me just do a short summary of this Egyptian Adventure of ours and then I'll quit bothering you with it. First of all let me point out that a trip like this is a fairly expensive thing to do. This 15 day trip was supposed to cost around 1.500 Euros per person. Most of things were already included in that sum. We only spent additional 150 Euros on food, drinks and a few gifts for folks back

A day in Istanbul (Day 15)
2007-11-26 07:00:00
There was almost a three hour wait in front of us when we arrived to the Cairo airport. Our plane to Istanbul was scheduled for 2:30 AM. When we finally landed in Turkey it was around 5 o'clock in the morning. Wandering around airports, waiting for airplains always seems to tire me out. This time it was no different. Regardless of that, we have decided to take a day-trip to the center of
Diving without a licence (Day 14)
2007-11-23 08:13:00
Our last day in Egypt began (like the rest of them) with a clear blue sky and hot, hot sun above us. The bigger part of our group wanted to take it easy by the hotel pool and enjoy a cocktail or two. M. and I have decided that we'll have enough time to rest when we get back home. We have been quite busy these 14 days but we wanted to make the most of what was left of our time in Egypt. Who

Snorkeling at Blue Hole (Day 13)
2007-11-20 06:43:00
A quick tour of our latest accommodation in Dahab revealed that this was the best hotel so far. It was really something completely different compared to the first one in Cairo. It even had a pool. The water inside the pool had a suspiciously greenish tone to it but we enjoyed a swim anyway. Undeniably president Hosni Mubarak is a very important figure in Egypt (he has been the

A story about a boy and a dolphin (Day 12)
2007-11-16 06:43:00
For the second night in a row we had a chance to sleep under the stars, just a step away from the sea. What's better then a swim in the sea first thing in the morning? And it is Red Sea I'm talking about! In my book hardly anything can top that. Well, I can actually think of a few things, but this is not that kind of a blog... Anyway, some twenty meters into the sea there was a lonely coral

Return to the desert (Day 11)
2007-11-09 07:59:00
In the morning there was no need for an alarm clock. There was not a person among us that could still sleep 20 minutes after sunrise. The temperature rose for 10 degrees almost instantly after sunrise. We have spent the night under the stars, tucked into our sleeping bags. Because there was nothing between the stars and us I was a bit worried about the dew. Of course there was no sign of it.

Egyptian locusts
2007-11-08 08:27:00
I have already mentioned the locust harassment that occurred close to a desert well (check the previous post for details). The Bedouins told us that some little animals are always gathering around the nearby plant called the apple of Sodom. I took many photos. These two turned out the best and I decided to post them. As you can see there were two different kinds of locusts posing for me. I

Into the Sinai desert (Day 10)
2007-11-05 08:11:00
This was my first true desert experience (I'm not counting the camel ride in Aswan a few days before). If your read my previous post carefully, you should guess that our first desert stop was at a desert canyon. The desert canyon we visited is in fact one of many wadis of Sinai desert. A wadi is a dry riverbed that is occasionally (once or twice a year during the rainy season) filled with

Sunrise on Mount Sinai (Day 10)
2007-10-31 01:38:00
A beeping sound from my cell phone woke me up at 2:15 AM. I only had time to freshen up and grab my backpack. Jeeps took us a bit closer to the mountain. From there we continued on foot. The plan was to get to the top of Mt. Sinai (aka. Mount ain of Moses) and enjoy a beautiful sunrise at 2288 meters above sea level. On the way up we tried to ignore many Bedouins offering a camel ride to the top

First contact with the Bedouins (Day 9)
2007-10-29 08:54:00
I think the majority of our group were glad to leave Hurghada behind. Around noon we boarded a catamaran which took us across the Red sea to Sharm el Sheikh. The ride was a bit rough due to strong winds, which are quite usual for this area. The captain didn't seem to bother and waves were splashing way over window height all the time. Some of the other passengers had quite a hard time. There

A pyramid or a mountain? (Day 8)
2007-10-24 07:50:00
As I have already mentioned in my previous post, all those temples were slowly beginning to bore us. I knew that later on I would be sorry for leaving out any one of them. It would be ideal if we could get to taste as much of genuine Egypt and at the same time see all the spectacular old buildings. In reality it is quite hard to squeeze all that into two weeks. We started Day 8 with a tour of

Last meal on the Nile (Day 7)
2007-10-22 09:23:00
We woke up to find ourselves at a totally different place from last night. We had been sailing for quite some time that morning and have reached Luxor by that time. Our Nubian crew had already prepared a nice breakfast for us. We enjoyed our last meal on the river Nile . On our itinerary for the day were a couple of nearby temples. First we stopped at Luxor Temple. It is quite huge and

The Nubian Nile experience (Day 6)
2007-10-18 06:59:00
The first part of our day on the Nile (described in my previous post) continued with some more relaxing and soaking up the positive atmosphere. Crew members constantly kept doing something I didn't dare. When they were thirsty, they simply reached over the edge of our boat for a fresh glass of Nile. If I did that, I guess I would still have diarrhea today. Thanks, but no thanks! After we

Curse of the Pharaohs (Day 6)
2007-10-15 08:10:00
First thing in the morning we boarded a feluka in Aswan. The plan was to get down the Nile with an occasional stop. Our first stop was in a Nubian village. It was much needed, because the effects of the Curse of the Pharaoh s were just kicking in. It was a simple village, with colorful walls around the houses. We were invited into one of those to have tea. It is a habit in Egypt to offer a

Greatest health hazard in Egypt... (Day 5)
2007-10-12 18:28:00
...is not eating local food and drinking tap water. It is not falling into the Nile. And not all those big bad terrorists (who are supposedly strolling around) either. In my opinion the greatest threat to one's health when traveling around Egypt is driving in a protected convoy! Some of you might think: What could go wrong? They are protected to be safe, right? Wrong! These convoys are a

Night train to Aswan (Day 4)
2007-10-10 08:10:00
If you want to get from Cairo to Aswan one of the easiest ways is to catch a night train. You simply buy a ticket, get on the train in the evening, get a comfortable chair, fall asleep and wake up in Aswan eight hours later. Well that's in theory. In reality it took around 15 hours and a new locomotive to get to our destination. Well we got used to that kind of stuff at this point. When the

Zabbaleen - People of the rubbish (Day 3)
2007-10-08 07:36:00
This is the second part of Day 3 of our Egyptian Adventure. You can read about the first part in the previous post. When we left the Mosque of Mohammed Ali our next stop was Rubbish city. But we knew nothing about it at that moment. Our bus dropped us at a suspiciously looking part of the city. There was a strange smell in the air, but we got used to that by then. We just thought: "We're in

Goodbye to cockroach roommates (Day 3)
2007-10-05 14:10:00
This was one busy day, so I decided to divide it into two posts. Here is the first part. Our second morning in Cairo started with our luggage being loaded onto the bus waiting in front of the Cosmopolitan hotel. The hotel staff who tried to arrange the luggage loading, failed the simple task completely. After half an hour watching two luggage boys walking up and down the hotel hall and waiting

Day of the pyramids (Day 2)
2007-10-03 08:30:00
Our first whole day in Egypt began by visiting some of the most magnificent buildings in the world. The number one reason for so many tourists coming to Egypt every year - the pyramids. It was still early in the morning when I woke up and went to check the hotel room balcony view. Well, nothing to brag about, but here it is... From the center of Cairo (locals call it Al Qahirah) we drove

Flight to Egypt (Day 1)
2007-10-01 07:50:00
The whole thing started at Ljubljana airport, where we caught our afternoon flight via Istanbul (Turkey) to Cairo. On the first photo is our last glance at Slovenia for 15 days. Alps can be seen in the background. After a couple of hours we landed in Istanbul. I usually try not to buy things at airports. I didn't do it this time either. My two companions (my girlfriend and her sister) on

I have been quite busy for the last couple of weeks. As you have probably noticed it didn't have anything to do with this blog - no posts for a while. I will try hard to be good and post more often from now on. I have decided to do a series of posts on my Egyptian adventure. I'll try to do at least one post for each one of the 15 days. Here is a simple map of the trip. As you can see, we
