An approaching storm passes over Mt. Evans heading towards Mt. Rosalie. I was so awed by this storm I left it to late to make it off the mountain (13,575ft) and ended up seeking shelter between two rocks with the poncho covering me and the dog. Fortunately after an hour of wind and hail the storm cleared enough for us to make run for a lower, more sheltered area.

Dem Bones
2007-07-04 17:36:00
Happy 4th of July y'all! Its fascinating examining the weather bleached dead branches of high altitude trees. In places on the mountains the dead trees become so white and weather worn, it gives the impression of a grave yard.

VLA... Reloaded
2007-07-02 19:29:00
A B&W version of the VLA, taken in exactly the same place as the previous radio observatory photograph but with a film camera on Ilford 100 B&W film. Thought it might be an interesting comparison, both the digital and film have their plus points, yet they are so different.

River Rock
2007-06-30 17:18:00
Heading back off into the mountains this weekend, hopefully the snow is low enough so we can get to the peak I was aiming for the other week. I'll leave you with this shot till Monday, The San Fransisco river, Reserve, NM. Have a great weekend ya'll!

Discarded
2007-06-29 17:07:00
My focus in this series of shots was the storm blowing across the state of New Mexico, what I had intended to capture overhead ended up too washed out, instead the highlights in the grass became the clincher for me.

Very similar to a previous post taken in one of Singapore's Buddhist temples but the wider angle on my film SLR gives a little more narrative on the surroundings.

Northern Sunset
2007-06-27 20:32:00
Started scanning in the roll of 35mm slide film that was sitting in the Pentax for the last 4 months. A few nice surprises from Singapore and the Norther n Territory in Australia. Seacape taken at Nightcliff beach in Darwin, NT.

The High Road
2007-06-26 18:25:00
Got the scans back from the photo lab last night from last weeks trip into Mt. Evans Wilderness. Not bad considering I wasn't able to get to the setup area I wanted, The snow on the north side of the ridge was still 4-5ft in places, and it's summer! This scene is looking towards the road up Mt. Evans, the highest paved road in North America (though I doubt you can see it on this picture!).

Storm Warning
2007-06-25 20:42:00
This is the same storm that appeared in the VLA post a few days ago, in fact I think the storm covered most of New Mexico. I was very happy with the tones and colors produced by the D70, but for capturing light levels, I feel the hand processed 35mm replicates the atmosphere on the New Mexico plains better.

Storm on the Plains
2007-06-21 20:15:00
Stormy weather on the Plains of St. Augustine makes an atmospheric background for the VLA (Very Large Array). Should be some interesting B&W 35mm shots of the same storm coming back from the lab any day soon.

A Prickly Affair
2007-06-19 18:21:00
This was my first roll of Ilford Delta 100, having shot a lot of 400 on the Yashica-D, I was hoping to loose some grain and bring out some smoother blacks. Worked pretty well, and the lighting was on my side that day ;) Shot atop a hill near Reserve New Mexico.

Before the Spring
2007-06-15 17:56:00
Overlooking South Park, Colorado. Heading up a nearby peak overnight today to try and catch a good morning and evening light on the Pegmatite peaks, we've had great weather and beautiful sunsets the last couple of days, so fingers crossed.

Spring Meadow
2007-06-14 17:50:00
At the very base of the Rockies where the Plains meet the foothills. It's been interesting the last few weeks watching spring come in at different times around the mountains, great from a photographers perspective, if you mess up a shot in one place you get second chance to take it later.

On the Range
2007-06-13 17:02:00
The rifle range near Harris Park, CO. I have this almost identical same shot that was taken in medium format. The same scene and same type of film (Ilford HP5 400) but both have very different qualities. I'm torn between the two but I'll go with the 35mm for now, maybe eventually I'll post the other photo as a comparison.

We All Scream
2007-06-12 20:13:00
Back finally from a quick road trip down to New Mexico, hence the lack of posts lately. This old building in the village of Magdalena along highway 60 has been converted from the original bank into an ice cream parlor, probably in the 50's or 60's and is still today a cafe.

Rocky Overlook
2007-06-05 10:13:00
Hiked up to a new peak the other day, with storms on either side of me I was hoping for some really atmospheric skyscapes. I work without a light meter when shooting in medium format film so it's a lot of guess work trying to get the exposure right. Unfortunately the sky in most of the shots were a white out, a few PP edits has made a couple of the images workable.

At The Edge Of It All
2007-05-30 17:57:00
Looking towards Mt. Evans Wilderness in the Colorado Rockies. This was a mid pm shot, I've attempted similar photos in the same area looking towards the setting sun in the west but exposure and film combos had in the past, produced less then desirable results.

Melt
2007-05-26 17:19:00
With the amount of snow we received this winter the streams are turning into raging torrents. And the melt isn't finished yet, above 10,500ft there's still in places 4ft of snow, making treks up to the peaks impossible. More shots of the Deer Creek rapids to follow.

Four Corners

Overlooking Buena Vista, Colorado. I found my new favorite toy, a 1957 Yashica-D 120 medium format camera. Despite the X & Y axis being awkward to level through the view finder I really enjoy using this camera. Combined with Ilford HP5 400 film, the results are a lovely retro grain quality.
