Cassini Still Plugging On
2008-03-11 11:31:00
In one of NASA's most successful missions this side of the Mars Rovers, the Cassini spacecraft is still haunting the neighborhood of Saturn. Having finished the primary stage of it's expected life, the craft now moves into its "extended" mission phase. (Basically they've made it as far and as long as they initially projected it would go for the cost, and now they're on "bonus" time.) Feeling a bit frisky, Cassini's handlers are going to pull off some fancy flying and actually dive the craft through a water plume errupting from one of Saturn's moons. PASADENA, Calif. - NASA's Cassini spacecraft will make an unprecedented "in your face" flyby of Saturn's moon Enceladus on Wed., March 12. The spacecraft, orchestrating its closest approach to date, will skirt along the edges of huge Old-Faithful-like geysers erupting from giant fractures on the south pole of Enceladus. Cassini will sample scientifically valuable water-ice, dust and gas in the plume. The source of the geysers is...

Today we have this:Carbon Output Must Near Zero To Avert Danger, New Studies Say The task of cutting greenhouse gas emissions enough to avert a dangerous rise in global temperatures may be far more difficult than previous research suggested, say scientists who have just published studies indicating that it would require the world to cease carbon emissions altogether within a matter of decades.Their findings, published in separate journals over the past few weeks, suggest that both industrialized and developing nations must wean themselves off fossil fuels by as early as mid-century in order to prevent warming that could change precipitation patterns and dry up sources of water worldwide.Using advanced computer models to factor in deep-sea warming and other aspects of the carbon cycle that naturally creates and removes carbon dioxide (CO2), the scientists, from countries including the United States, Canada and Germany, are delivering a simple message: The world must bring carbon emis...

IL 14, The Republicans and Obama
2008-03-10 04:55:00
While there is a danger of reading too much into Bill Foster's win over Jim Oberweis in the special election held in Illinois this weekend there is also a danger in reading too little. Captain Ed has some legitimate criticism of the Illinois Republican Party and the candidate they picked but the fact remains the NRCC spent over a million dollars, 20% of their cash on hand in an unsuccessful attempt to hold the seat. Voter turnout was low which in the past has given the Republicans the edge but this time it looks like they are the ones who stayed home. And perhaps the most significant is that Obama campaigned for Foster and McCain for Oberweis giving Obama an early victory over McCain in a Republican district. Yesterday, little-known Democrat Bill Foster scored a major upset and won the congressional seat held for 20 years by former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, a Republican. The race was a proxy war between Barack Obama and John McCain. This should be a big plus for Obama and the De...

Not So Safe
2008-03-09 05:30:00
The big news tonight is not that Obama beats Clinton in Wyoming caucuses but that former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert's house seat was won by a Democrat in spite of the fact that NRCC pumped over a million dollars they didn't have into the race. CHICAGO -- A longtime Republican district fell to the Democrats Saturday when a wealthy businessman and scientist snatched former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's congressional seat in a closely watched special election.Democrat Bill Foster won 52 percent of the vote compared to 48 percent for Republican Jim Oberweis. With 565 of 568 precincts reporting, Foster had 51,140 votes to Oberweis' 46,270."Tonight our voices are echoing across the country and Washington will hear us loud and clear, it's time for a change," Foster told cheering supporters Saturday evening.Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen said Foster's win is a rebuke of the Bush administration and of the GOP's apparent presidential nomin...

Me too Steve
2008-03-08 20:42:00
Like Steve Soto at The Left Coaster I endorsed Hillary Clinton a few months ago. Like Steve Steve Soto I have had second thoughts. Steve gives us his final thoughts on Hillary: Lastly, it's time for me to step out of the sh*tstorm and take a shower to wash off the slime and disappointment. I?ve had enough of the Clinton fluffing of McCain, and I?m done with her. Frankly I?ve looked foolish trying to defend her and her campaign?s burn-the-house-down-to-get-the-nomination strategy, and I?m tired of seeing this message and these tactics. Politics at this level is not softball, but as I have said before, being an arsonist does not recommend one for the party?s nomination.Me Too Steve
Libertarians for Obama?
2008-03-08 16:59:00
A few days ago Alan Abramowitz said he thought the greatest threat to John McCain was not the conservatives who have opposed him but the moderate-to-liberal Republicans. I thought at the time he was leaving out another important group - the libertarians and paleocons. Few on the left have been more critical of the Bush Administration and the Iraq war than the old right. Their critiques can be found at The American Conservative, Cato At Liberty and LewRockwell.com. With the Quixotesque campaign of Ron Paul finished where would the Libertarians turn? Justin Raimondo for one has become an "Obama Cultist". Obama kept mentioning the war ? you know, the one we were lied into on phony "evidence" of a nonexistent nuclear program. Not only that, but he kept reminding Hillary we should never had launched it in the first place: he needled her until she visibly squirmed. That was the hook, the lure that drew me ineluctably into the Obama cult.Okay, let's admit this, too: it is a cult, i.e. a g...

It's the economy stupid!
2008-03-07 17:51:00
Paul Krugman believes that the economy will be the issue in November. I think he is correct although Iraq will be a bigger issue by October than it appears to be now. Krugman also believes that Clinton is better equipped to take advantage of American's economic anxieties. From what I've seen up to this point I would have to agree. As David Brooks says: Besides, the real softness of the campaign is not that Obama is a wimp. It?s that he has never explained how this new politics would actually produce bread-and-butter benefits to people in places like Youngstown and Altoona. If he can?t explain that, he?s going to lose at some point anyway. While Iraq will be a problem for John McCain the economy is a real problem as Mark Silva explains: As if the economy weren't already stepping up as a driving force in the 2008 presidential race, the Labor Department announced this morning that 63,000 jobs were lost in February. This marks the biggest slide since March 2003, and cements a two-month ...

Dems breaking the 50% mark?
2008-03-07 14:36:00
As if the news for Republicans wasn't bleak enough this election season, a new AP poll has produced what appears to be an unusual benchmark.AP Poll: More say they're Democrats WASHINGTON - More people say they are Democrats than said so before voting started in this year's presidential contests while the number of Republicans has remained flat, a survey showed Thursday. The poll showed 52 percent call themselves Democrats, up from 45 percent in an AP-Ipsos survey in mid-December. Thirty-five percent say they are Republicans, about the same as December's 37 percent.I can't remember this happening before, and a quick Google search isn't giving me any good background. But in general, both parties tend to take numbers well below half with independents, moderates and third party voters making up the middle ground which both need to fight for. Coming into a hotly contested campaign, having more than half of the nation identifying with your opponent's party is troubling to say the le...

McCain and Iraq
2008-03-06 23:04:00
Survey USA published some electoral maps today - sorry but they are nonsense at this point. McCain has been telling us that the surge he supported is a grand a glorious success. We have seen violence in that country steadily increase since the first of the year and just today a pair of bombs in Baghdad killed 53. Steve Chapman takes a look at McCain and Iraq over at Real Clear Politics:McCain's Consistent Folly on Iraq On the campaign trail, John McCain has retreated on immigration, changed his mind on tax cuts and admitted economics is not his strong suit. But all that's unimportant, we are told, because he was Right On Iraq -- back at the beginning, when he endorsed the invasion, and again over the past year, when he has stoutly supported the surge. So, whichever Democrat he faces, the November election could be a referendum on the Iraq war and his support for it.If so, that may not be a plus for McCain. McCain has been consistent about Iraq, in the sense of being consistently w...

Hillary's Ongoing Campaign
2008-03-06 21:28:00
There are those who believe Hillary should get out, I advocated that in absence of wins on March 3rd. She got those wins, not by margins that would make her particularly likely make the large changes in delegate total required to win, but she carried those states. What this says is that there are a significant number of voters wanting a choice. I don't like Hillary one bit, but I like voters and I like choices. Yes, I'd prefer better choices than those available, but these are the available choices. Democratic Party unity is not the question, this Party can take a campaign. The Democratic electorate deserves a chance to look at candidates and make decisions. Decisions based on policies, judgement, and campaigning. The campaigns might take this as a shot across the bow, you are performing before a Democratic electorate, you disregard that at your peril. I loath the Clinton 3:00AM ad, if I'd been in doubt regarding my vote, this would have finished the decision. I cannot imagine tha...

Does Admiral Fallon have to go?
2008-03-06 18:20:00
Now we all know that George W. Bush wants to do whatever his bat shit crazy Vice President, Dick Cheney, wants to do and we all know that Dick Cheney and the rest of the lunatics want to attack Iran. According to Thomas P.M. Barnett there is someone standing in their way, the head of U. S. Central Command, Admiral William "Fox" Fallon. The Man Between War and Peace So while Admiral Fallon's boss, President George W. Bush, regularly trash-talks his way to World War III and his administration casually casts Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as this century's Hitler (a crown it has awarded once before, to deadly effect), it's left to Fallon--and apparently Fallon alone--to argue that, as he told Al Jazeera last fall: "This constant drumbeat of conflict . . . is not helpful and not useful. I expect that there will be no war, and that is what we ought to be working for. We ought to try to do our utmost to create different conditions."What America needs, Fallon says, is a "combinati...
McCain's Bush Problem
2008-03-06 16:12:00
As Jazz pointed out yesterday and I discussed here John McCain's biggest problem in November will not be Clinton or Obama but George W. Bush . Writing at Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball Dr. Alan Abramowitz agrees.THE REAL THREAT TO MCCAIN?Disgruntled GOP moderates could impact party unity A lot of Republicans are unhappy with their party this year. Some conservative Republicans, following the lead of talk show hosts such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, have been threatening to sit out the November election or vote for a third party candidate because they don't consider their party's presidential nominee, John McCain, to be sufficiently conservative.Since emerging as the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination on Super Tuesday, Mr. McCain has been working hard to win the support of conservatives by stressing his hawkish views on Iraq and his conservative positions on social issues such as abortion. In a further effort to ease the concerns of conservatives, McCain recently p...

State of the Campaign
2008-03-06 06:31:00
Sorry about the lack of posts but the real world has has intruded on my blogging time. I did take an hour out today to discuss the recent primary results with Jazz and Barbara O'Brien of Mahablog on Mid Stream Radio. Barbara like many others is concerned that a primary that drags on to the convention will hurt the Democrats and give the election to John McCain . I don't share that fear, at least not yet. While I don't buy Kevin Drum's 1968 analogy there are still several reasons for this. Even a relatively dirty campaign will only result in getting material the Republicans would use for "October surprises" out in the open long before October so they can be refuted or forgotten. Second, it will keep the Democrats in the news while John McCain fades from sight. The most important reason I'm not that concerned is John McCain himself. John McCain is old, older than Reagan when he ran. John McCain often says things only a crazy old man would say. John McCain has been forced to accept...

George W. Bush Screws John McCain
2008-03-05 22:54:00
Yesterday's primary results looked like some bad news for the Democratic party, but apparently GWB really wants McCain to lose in November. (A holdover from the 2000 unpleasantness?) Why else would President Bush go up on the stage and give McCain the kiss of death?Bush: McCain ?Is Not Going To Change? My Foreign PolicyAt the White House today, President Bush threw his support behind Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). In a press conference after a private lunch, a reporter asked the duo how McCain would ?make the case that you?re going to provide the change that the voters seem to want.?Bush quickly cut in, declaring that McCain is ?not going to change?:BUSH: And the good news about our candidate there will be a new president, a man of character and courage, but he?s not going to change when it comes to taking on the enemy. He understands this is a dangerous world.By painting McCain as the candidate to deliver, in effect, a third Bush term, he's probably just written all the advertisements ...

What excites me and what doesn't
2008-03-04 23:45:00
I can't get to excited about the elections today. There is some indication that Hillary may be gaining some ground on Obama. Probably not enough to salvage he horrible campaign. But no matter the results of today's primaries or the November election one thing has become obvious to me - the country that I love is not going to get what it desperately needs at this time in history, a great president. This on the other hand excites me.(via Below the Beltway)Earth and Moon as Seen from Mars Click on picture for larger image. The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera would make a great backyard telescope for viewing Mars, and we can also use it at Mars to view other planets. This is an image of Earth and the moon, acquired on October 3, 2007, by the HiRISE camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. At the time the image was taken, Earth was 142 million kilometers (88 million miles) from Mars, giving the HiRISE image a scale of 142 kilometers (88 miles) per pixel, a...

It would be funny if it were not so deadly
2008-03-04 06:59:00
As shocking as the evil of the Bush administration is it takes second to the complete incompetence the administration as demonstrated. The members of the Bush administration would have been at home in Leonard Wibberley's Duchy of Grand Fenwick. The newest example of the deadly incompetence of the Bush/Cheney cabal is documented by David Rose in Vanity Fair; The Gaza BombshellGo read the article but here are the facts in a nutshell: The administration demanded that elections be held in Palestine, the Democracy thing you know.Hamas won 56 percent of the seats in the Legislative Council which took everyone in the administration by surprise. They must not have been listening to Rumsfeld when he said Democracy is messy. The Bush administration told the Abbas to dislove the recently elected government and declare Marshall law. They then armed his party, Fatah. When word of this leaked out the result was a civil war which Hamas won.Hamas confiscated most of the US supplied weapons are are now...

How Ralph Nader Could Get My Vote
2008-03-03 15:45:00
If the House that is controlled by the Democrats gives in to Bush on the FISA bill and grants immunity to the telecoms I will be forced to agree with Ralph Nader that there is no difference between the parties. Now congress has been willing to pass the "Protect America Act" without telecom immunity but the Bush White House will not sign it without. Kevin Drum has observed that the telecoms themselves are not pushing for immunity or to be exact one of his readers and that reader thinks he knows why. A couple of days ago I got an email from commenter/blogger bmaz proposing an explanation for this. To be honest, I sort of blew him off at first without reading his argument carefully, which I now think was a mistake. There's some guesswork in what he says, but he's an attorney with considerable experience dealing with wiretapping cases and he suggests that the reason the telcos don't care all that much about the lawsuits being pursued against them is because they almost certainly sign...

In Golf We Call It a Mulligan
2008-03-03 14:48:00
Each year, when my friend Kirby and I head out to hit the links - particularly early in the season when you tend to be rusty - we keep alive the ancient golfing tradition of the Mulligan once per side. What this means is that should you smack your drive out of bounds, into a pond, or just chunk a worm-burner twenty yards from the tee, you can take out a fresh ball, tee it up and hit another at no penalty. It seems that this is what Florida Governor Charlie Crist would like to do with the Florida Democratic primary election.Florida Governor Charlie Crist said he'd support a repeat of the Democratic presidential primary so the state's delegates can be counted at the party's national convention.Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said he's open to the possibility. Primary elections are paid for by a state's taxpayers, so the offer from Crist, a Republican, is "very helpful'' because money is an issue, Dean said. For those of you who have little exposure to golf as...

More on the air tanker deal
2008-03-02 18:18:00
Below Jazz discussed the bru ha ha over the contract awarded to Northrup Grumman and EADS for the next generation of air tankers. As I said in the comments section there is a little more to the story than free trade. If they were going to use an existing airframe, the most economical thing to do, there were two choices, Boeing and EADS (Airbus). By all rights Boeing should not have even been able to bid on the deal and here is why: Unethical conductIn May 2003, the US Air Force announced it would lease 100 KC-767 tankers to replace the oldest 136 of its KC-135s. The 10 year lease would give the USAF the option to purchase the aircraft at the end of the contract. In September 2003, responding to critics who argued that the lease was vastly more expensive than an outright purchase, the DOD announced a revised lease of 74 aircraft and purchase of 26.In December 2003, the Pentagon announced the project was to be frozen while an investigation of allegations of corruption by one of its fo...

UPDATE: Bah. Ron posted about this at the exact same time I did, but what the hell. I'll leave mine here as well. See below for his take on it.Violence may be down in Iraq, and perhaps an argument can even be made that some of the smaller political benchmarks are being met. But what is the clearest picture of the emerging society on the streets of Baghdad for which we are paying so heavily in blood and treasure? Shaun Mullen at Kiko's House points to a rather telling picture. What does it say about the state of world affairs that when high-ranking U.S. officials visit Iraq they wear flak jackets, there is no advance notice and the trips are rushed and cloaked in secrecy, whereas when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad drops by as he did today his trip and itinerary are announced well in advance and he is greeted with pomp and ceremony? In the linked post you can see the picture of a smiling Ahmadinejad, dressed in a dapper Armani suit, strolling in the sunlight with Iraqi leaders...

Delicious. So How's That "Free Trade" Working Out For You?
2008-03-01 19:04:00
This just in from the Department of Double Standards. The BBC reports that a massive contract to construct new KC-45A tanker planes has not been awarded to Boeing. And if you only read the lede, you might think that the contract had been awarded to Airbus in Europe. In fact, it was awarded to US defense contractor Northrop Grumman who will assemble the planes in the United States, but they constructed the bid using a consortium of global providers including Airbus. A similar situation arose here in New York recently when Lockheed Martin was awarded the bid for new "Marine One" presidential helicopters using a similar bid, with many key parts being manufactured in Italy. So, how dare the US Government make such a decision? General Arthur Lichte of the Air Force offered an explanation."More passengers, more cargo, more fuel to offload, more patients that we can carry, more availability, more flexibility and more dependability," he said. Those bastards! How dare they select a bid that wa...

For the Friday, weekend review edition of Mid Stream Radio , (1 pm Eastern, 10 am Pacific) Ron and I will be talking about the weird CTV story that continues to unravel after the now widely known Obama smear, among other things. Careful readers will note that CTV still claims to be sticking to their story. However, if you read way, way, way down to one of the last paragraphs, they sneak in this little gem:But on Wednesday, one of the primary sources of the story, a high-ranking member of the Canadian embassy, gave CTV more details of the call. He even provided a timeline. He has since suggested it was perhaps a miscommunication. Oh really? Your primary source is now wedging in the "maybe it was a miscommunication" line? But the story is still 100% solid, eh? Here's a news flash. That kind of covering fire is often a red flag for a "source" who thought they were slinging mud from the safe confines on anonymity, but has suddenly been dragged out into the spotlight. St John McBush finds himself caught in the middle of dueling Christian wingnuts. St John gladly accepted the endorsement of the apocalyptic Texas evangelicalist John Hagee. The problem is Hagee is very anti Catholic, in fact a bigot. As a result the right wing faction of the Catholic Church is none to pleased with St John of McCain.McCAIN EMBRACES BIGOT Yesterday, Senator John McCain said he was “very honored by Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement.” The Republican presidential hopeful also called Hagee “the staunchest leader of our Christian evangelical movement,” citing the minister’s pro-Israel stance.Catholic League president Bill Donohue addressed this today:“There are plenty of staunch evangelical leaders who are pro-Israel, but are not anti-Catholic. John Hagee is not one of them. Indeed, for the past few decades, he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church.
