A few Monday scoops
2008-03-24 16:07:00
PORT DEAL, CENSORED SPEECH, DEBATING AND GOOD GOLF There are a number of small stories going around today, but nothing yet that’s really worthy of its own post. So here are a few scoops for your otherwise bland Monday morning: ? SANFORD LIVES IN OWN MAGICAL WORLD — I think Gov. Mark Sanford is spending too much time reading celebrity gossip sites and taking on the persona of disgraced former pop star Britney Spears. It appears that, rather than dealing with the mess he created when he got involved in the Port Royal deal, the governor has chosen to create an alternate reality where he was the hero. Sanford said he wasn’t surprised that the deal fell through because the developer who won the bidding process was shady; which is, of course, why he went around behind the guy’s back telling that to everyone on the Ports Authority Board. Of course, now that the port sale isn’t going to happen, Sanford can say, “I told you so.” Except, that woul...

Happy Easter!
2008-03-23 13:39:00
CHRIST RISES, EASTER BUNNY TEARS IT UP, I MISS NASCAR, BASKET I spent a lot of time deciding whether or not to put an exclamation point on that headline. On the one hand, today’s the day that Jesus was resurrected and ascended to Heaven to pay for the sins of mankind. But on the other hand, exclamation points on blog headlines are incredibly trite. As you can see, I went with the exclamation point but wasted too much time to hide my Easter basket before church. Which means I’m not going to have anything to find later except for the time to fill out the absurd amount of forms needed to file my taxes. Something else I’m not going to be able to do later: watch a NASCAR race because they take Easter Sunday off. I disagree with that decision. I mean, the NFL still plays on Christmas Day and there will be March Madness games on today, so they can race. Now, a lot of people complain that Easter, like other religious holidays, has sadly taken an ill-fated turn toward ...

Sanford and Aide Not Telling the Truth
2008-03-22 13:00:00
In rapid succession, two recent op-eds have been published by Governor Mark Sanford ?s apologists with me as their target. The first by Ashley Landess (?Our S.C. ports must remain competitive,? March 5, 2008) was simply misinformed. Ms. Landess would be wise to do a fact-check on information the governor?s office provides her before firing off opinions. Contrary to her summary of my views, I have always advocated partnering with private companies to help raise funds for the future of our ports. I am simply opposed to completely turning over the management of our vital ports to a unionized company, which Governor Sanford has been aggressively pushing behind the scenes for years. The more serious attack was made against my character by Tom Davis, the Governor?s chief of staff (?Ethical issues required Campbell?s departure,? March 7, 2008). Mr. Davis was attempting to refute my statement that the Governor removed me from the Ports Authority Board because I didn?t support his agenda ...

Saturday, Monday Guest Post Series
2008-03-21 23:51:00
A little housekeeping: I know that we haven’t had a Sunday Guest Post in a couple weeks, so I’m glad to say that I’ve locked down two big ones that will go up in the next three days. I apologize to those of you that came to look forward to guest commentary from influential South Carolinians every Sunday, but I’ve been very busy lately. Anyway, we’re back with a bang this weekend. Since Sunday is Easter, I will roll one out tomorrow and one on Monday . And I GUARANTEE you that both will MUST-READ. I have already received tomorrow’s guest post which will be up by 8 a.m., and it will certainly rattle some cages. I can’t give away too much, but it’s well worth stopping by. I don’t have Monday’s post in my hands yet, but I’ve been assured that it will be on a VERY pertinent issue. I tried to find out what the issue was, but this person said I would have to wait. So hopefully I didn’t build it up too much. All I ...

Senate agrees with House on Real ID
2008-03-21 17:42:00
LATEST LEGISLATIVE SHOWDOWN WITH GOVERNOR IMMINENT With only 10 days left to file for an extension in complying with the federally-mandated Real ID program, the South Carolina Senate has joined with the House in demanding Gov. Mark Sanford submit the necessary paperwork by the March 31 deadline. The Senate passed a resolution Thursday calling on Sanford to join with the majority of other states and ask for more time in applying the program, which requires states to impose new, tougher standards for getting identification. Failure to comply or seek an extension with the law would mean residents of that state could no longer use their driver?s license to board an airplane. People would instead be forced to use a passport, a military ID or undergo secondary security screening before they could travel on an airline. Sanford, who is one of four governors to neither seek an extension nor implement the program, said he hasn’t made up his mind about whether or not to act. The Assoc...

Highway Patrol investigation goes federal
2008-03-20 20:57:00
PROSECUTORS TO LOOK INTO POSSIBLE POLICE MISCONDUCT The South Carolina Department of Public Safety’s recent publicity nightmare surrounding a possible pattern of misconduct in its ranks — a mess that has already claimed the careers of two high ranking officials — is about to get a whole lot worse. Federal prosecutors say they will launch a full investigation into the State Highway Patrol after two new dashboard camera videos released this week showed troopers ramming their cruisers into fleeing suspects. Those videos came on the heels of a highly controversial clip of a white trooper using a racial slur and threatening to kill a black suspect. In the wake of that scandal, Highway Patrol Col. Russell Roark and his boss, Public Safety Director James Schweitzer were forced to resign. “I’ve reviewed some of the videos, and based on that review, felt that it was appropriate to have our office involved,” said Kevin McDonald, acting U.S. attorney for S...

GREENVILLE RADIO STATION, PARKING OFFICIALS APPEAR TO DENY NEEDS OF HANDICAPPED MOTORISTS An amateur videographer grabbed some interesting footage of a Greenville radio station apparently denying parking access to handicapped motorists and a parking official harassing someone who needed the parking space. The above video, which just surfaced on YouTube, showed a van for B93.7 illegally parked in a handicapped parking spot (or loading zone blocking it) on Main St. in Greenville during some sort of publicity appearance. When a disabled woman was forced to park in a loading zone instead, she was reportedly harassed by a parking official. The official seemed to ignore the station’s van and allowed it to leave completely un-ticketed. An email to B93.7 about the incident was not returned (see update). The footage isn’t sensational, but it demonstrates the all-too-often frustration endured by anyone who relies on parking access because of a disability. And it shows the disapp...

Graham releases long list of names
2008-03-20 16:21:00
SENATOR UNVEILS 1,000 MEMBER STEERING COMMITTEE I’m not sure what the re-election campaign of Sen. Lindsey Graham plans to do with the 1,000 people listed on their new statewide Steering Committee (PDF HERE), but if these people “report back” as often as is implied, they’re going need a team of those old-school phone operators. The campaign said Steering Committee members, who hail from all forty-six counties, will serve as “the eyes and ears of the campaign in their communities. They will serve as the foundation of a volunteer army for campaign activities across the state.” In addition to Steering Committee members from across the state, President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Governor Mark Sanford, Senator Jim DeMint, Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell, 1st District Representative Henry Brown, 2nd District Representative Joe Wilson, 3rd District Representative Gresham Barrett, 4th District Representative Bob Inglis and Attorney Ge...

It?s been five years already?

ANOTHER REMINDER THAT IT TOOK FOREVER TO GET IT RIGHT It’s hard to believe that we launched Operation Iraqi Freedom five years ago today. I remember sitting in front of my television watching the nightvision shots of bombs exploding straight into the history books. Like everyone else, I thought at the time we would be in and out in less than a year. That mission has obviously been incredibly controversial and it certainly won’t go down as the most popular military operation in American history. But it was the right thing to do. I supported the endeavor from the beginning, and I still support it today. Unfortunately, it took the politicians almost four years to figure out what the hell we were doing. And a lot of good men and women died or were injured in the process. It looks like we have turned things around and have been making huge progress thanks in large part to the success of the troop surge. Which is why Sen. John McCain will be the 44th President of the Uni...

Looks like somebody is running for governor
2008-03-19 20:51:00
DC FUNDRAISER STRONG SIGN THAT MCMASTER IS IN THE RACE We’re still more than seven months away from this year’s general election, yet speculation surrounding the 2010 race to replace Gov. Mark Sanford is already in full swing. There are roughly five viable names rumored to considering making a bid, but the likely frontrunner is leaving little doubt about his intentions. Attorney General Henry McMaster will be hosting a fundraiser in Washington, DC on April 1, according to an invitation obtained by The Palmetto Scoop (PDF HERE). That’s an odd move for someone running for attorney general. To my knowledge, it would be the first time he’s ever done such a thing. So why would a second-term attorney general who faces almost no threat of losing his post be building a new, larger financial network? Gee, I don’t know. Could it be that he’s preparing to run for something larger like, say, maybe governor? If there had been any doubt until now that McMa...

The Supreme Court hates you
2008-03-19 02:14:00
TOAL & CO. GIVE TAXPAYER CASH TO AVARICIOUS ATTORNEYS If you didn’t already know it, that headline probably came as a bit of a surprise. But folks, it’s true. Chief Justice Jean Toal and the South Carolina Supreme Court have it out for you and your tax dollars. How else could you explain giving a pair of greedy trial lawyers — it wouldn’t be a stretch to call them “blood-sucking,” as one insider noted — more than $1 million in “attorney’s fees” for their “work” under the Teacher and Employee Retention Incentive program? You can’t, that’s how. But the high court did it anyway, writing a pretty nice paycheck to the firms of Cam Lewis and Dick Harpootlian on Monday, signed by the taxpayers. Mike Sponhour, spokesman for the State Budget and Control Board, which oversees the state retirement system, said his agency was ?disappointed for the taxpayers of South Carolina.? ?This money cannot come out...

A Royal mess
2008-03-18 20:04:00
PORT DEVELOPER BAILS ON CONTROVERSIAL DEAL The previously unidentified buyer who agreed to develop waterfront property at the port of Port Royal from the state for $26 million has backed out of the deal. A spokesman for Port Royal Harbour Llc told the Charleston Post and Courier that the company has “exhausted all of their resources and cannot meet the extended deadlines which were established.” I’m assuming “exhausted all of their resources” is some kind of code for “we’re fed up with all the attention brought by Gov. Mark Sanford’s shady dealings” and “cannot meet the extended deadlines” means “we’re done working with this buffoon.” Considering Sanford supposedly went out of his way to tar the group’s reputation and may have illegally involved himself in the bidding process, I guess I can’t blame them for wanting to take their business to a place where the governor doesn’t act li...

EPA hooks SC students up with sweet new rides
2008-03-18 15:49:00
ANDRE BAUER’S ECO-FRIENDLY RIDE REPORTEDLY ‘JEALOUS’ I received a press release about the Environmental Protection Agency dishing out a $241,500 grant to South Carolina to establish a “Clean School Bus” program and thought, although newsworthy, this is freaking boring. But then three things hit me: Besides the filing frenzy, absolutely nothing is going on right now, so everything is boring. These buses are way sweeter and way more eco-friendly than Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s new smart car. I can use the awesome NASCAR bus picture again, even though the EPA might not let us advertise on the new buses. So here’s as much of the press release as I could stay awake for: The Department of Education, with the cooperation of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), will install anti-idling devices and retrofit crankcase filtration systems on 500 school buses throughout the state. The grant is one of three being awarde...

Another Gamecock arrested
2008-03-18 00:39:00
NEWTON THIRD USC FOOTBALL PLAYER ARRESTED IN PAST MONTH Another University of South Carolina football player has been charged with a crime, and to no surprise, the arrest came in Columbia’s five points. Senior walk-on safety Michael Newton was charged with disorderly conduct during the St. Patrick’s Day festival Saturday. That brings the total number of Gamecocks arrested this offseason to three. I’m thinking of putting a counter in the sidebar, and if anybody steals that idea I’m going to be pretty pissed. Richland County sheriff’s spokeswoman Kim Myers told The (Columbia) State newspaper that Newton and other men were throwing chairs and would not stop when officers told them to. […] Newton played in five games last year for the Gamecocks after sitting out the 2006 season because he transferred from Newberry. [AP] Now, I’ll admit I’ve never even heard of Newton, and I didn’t find his name on the depth chart, but he totally st...

SENATOR’S CLOSENESS TO GOP NOMINEE = BIG POWER FOR SC If anyone wants to know why Lindsey Graham isn’t in any real danger of being deposed anytime soon, this is why. Not this sentence — nor the last — but the video above. Notice that it’s almost impossible to see GOP presidential nominee John McCain ANYWHERE without Graham at his side. That’s because Graham has stuck with McCain for years, through thick and thin, and now South Carolina’s senior senator has launched on a meteoric ride to becoming one of the most powerful people in Washington, despite being a freshman. To reaffirm this point they are visiting Iraq together. “This will be the 19th (foreign) trip I’ve taken with Senator McCain since (2003),” said Graham, who has represented S.C. in the U.S. Senate since 2002. “He’s one of my closest friends in the Senate. I think I am someone who is a sounding board for him. “I’ve been intricately in...

DILL, DAVIS PRESENT SERIOUS THREATS TO TWO INCUMBENTS Tis the season to find out who is for real and who is just bluffing when it comes to running for a Congressional, legislative or local post in this year’s election. Filing for both Republicans and Democrats seeking their party’s nomination in the June 10 primaries began Sunday. Between now and March 30, when filing closes, we will learn the answers to a number of important questions and set the field for June and inevitably November. Now that I’ve got the boring background stuff out of the way, here’s the good stuff. Over the weekend, a pair of stories leaked regarding two legislative seats — one House and one Senate — that had previously been considered “safe.” Apparently, that isn’t the case anymore. The biggest news is that Rep. Harry Cato (R-Greenville), who some consider a possible contender to become House Speaker should Bobby Harrell leave office to run for governor,...

Inglis picks up primary opponent
2008-03-16 20:46:00
FORMER EPA OFFICIAL TO RUN AGAINST INCUMBENT CONGRESSMAN Bob Inglis is the third sitting U.S. Congress man from South Carolina to receive a challenger in a 2008 re-election bid, but he is the first to pick up a primary opponent. Former Environmental Protection Agency administrator Charles Jeter (on the left in the above photo going over strategy with his campaign manager) announced Friday at The Beacon Drive-In — a must-hit for candidates in Spartanburg — that he would be challenging Inglis in the June 10 Republican primary. The political novice is challenging incumbent Rep. Bob Inglis in the Republican primary for the 4th Congressional District. Jeter, 66, worked for the EPA during the Reagan administration, and before that was director of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s water pollution control program. He’s been an environmental engineer since 1986. From what I can gather about this guy, his campaign will be based largely ...

Ravenel gets 10 months
2008-03-14 21:40:00
COULD HAVE BEEN WAY WORSE Former State Treasurer Thomas Ravenel will spend 10 months in a federal prison after pleading guilty last September to drug charges. He was also fined $250,000. Ravenel could have faced up to 20 years and a $1 million fine. His co-defendant, Michael Miller, was also sentenced to 10 months in prison. Ravenel, 45, a mulitmillionaire businessman and one-time U.S. Senate candidate, admitted during his September guilty plea that he bought cocaine from Miller, used it sporadically for two years and provided the drug to guests at his Charleston mansion. Then, Ravenel told a judge that he threw parties at his home and someone would call Miller, who would deliver cocaine. A prosecutor said Ravenel would buy the cocaine and then provide it to people at the parties that he threw. Ravenel was charged June 19 with distributing up to a pound of cocaine, according to the indictment. He has been free on bail since then and has sought drug treatment. In his plea agreement...

Buddy might not have enough to file
2008-03-14 19:13:00
U.S. SENATE “CANDIDATE” NEEDS $10K TO SEEK NOMINATION, HAS FAR LESS It would be a crying shame if Buddy Witherspoon, who is challenging U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, didn’t have enough money to file with the Republican Party. But that’s exactly what might happen when filing opens on Sunday. I reported last month that Buddy’s fourth quarter FEC financial disclosure showed the former National Committeeman had only $8,711.61 cash on hand. Any candidate seeking the the Republican nomination for Senate, however, must pay a $10,158 filing fee. Unless he raised at least $1,446.39 this quarter, Buddy won’t have enough money to run as a Republican. Of course, that’s assuming he hasn’t spent anything, which he obviously has. So make that $1,446.39 plus disbursements. If his last disclosure is an indicator of what he has spent since January, there’s no way he’ll make the cut. Even if he does, he’ll have blown all of his mone...

Don?t leave your kids with this lady
2008-03-14 16:59:00
GARDEN CITY NANNY CAUGHT ON CAMERA ABUSING BABY Anyone who knows me has heard me say that I’m not a fan of children because I believe they are here to replace me, and that’s not cool. But I’m also staunchly pro-life because I know I can thwart their efforts to topple me, so they should get a fair chance to try. Therefore, from conception onward, I feel we are responsible for taking care of the youngins, even though they may one day be our enemies. So when a nanny in Garden City was caught on a hidden camera abusing a 5-month-old left in her care, my first thought was that she should spend a whole lot of time in prison. But then I thought, we should make the punishment fit the crime. We need to find a giant or make a large robot that is about 80 feet tall and could pick this lady up and shake the hell out of her. Since the baby in this case was medically unharmed, we’ll make sure not to cause this lady any more physical or mental damage than she already ha...

EDITORIAL CALLS FOR APPOINTMENT OF STATE OFFICERS BECAUSE MANY VOTERS ARE MORONS I haven’t written much about Gov. Mark Sanford’s governmental restructuring proposal that would amend the state Constitution by eliminating elections for a number of statewide officials. In fact, I think I’ve only touched on it once, and I hadn’t quite made up my mind. I also haven’t made up my mind about that first sentence. It’s kind of long, but it packs in a lot of information. I think I’m going to go with it. Moving on… Under Sanford’s plan, candidates for lieutenant governor would run on the same ticket as a gubernatorial candidate, and the adjutant general, agriculture commissioner, secretary of state, education superintendent, comptroller general and treasurer would be appointed by the governor. So it’s pretty obvious to see why Sanford has been calling for this since he first took office. On the one hand, giving Sanford any more p...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTP90IL9yl g LOCAL NEWS REPORTER SHOWS OFF FISTICUFF SKILLS I don’t know how I missed this, but the guys at The Shot picked up on the clip of a WSPA reporter getting attacked while covering the family of a murder victim in Union. You can see the video above from the newscast. It’s not as amazing as the inter-network news fight scene from Anchorman, but it’s still pretty awesome. If only somebody had brought out a trident or a medieval mace. WSPA reporter Charmayne Brown and photographer Ti Barnes were covering the scene of the homicide investigation in Union when the attack occurred. Brown says she was across the street from the victim?s house when family members began yelling at her to leave. Brown says the group was also yelling racial slurs at her and her photographer. She says one of the women in the group then rushed at her, punched her and dragged her to the ground. She says at that point it?s hard for her to recall what was g...

SC BAD BOY SPEARHEADS SPURIOUS REFORM EFFORT I don’t know who all will be taking part in Rod Shealy’s rumored “Reform Caucus,” but when I was passed along a draft of their “Blueprint for Reform” (pdf here) I couldn’t help but laugh. Not that these things don’t sound good on paper, but they fly in the face of everything Shealy represents. And I’m guessing most of those in the legislature who would be duped by him into putting their name on this are in the same boat. I could be wrong and maybe some of the people who join the caucus are born-again reformers, but I’m inclined to agree with FITSNews that this is all just a gimmick because, as he said, ?the bigger the lie, the easier it is to sell.? We know that legislators love grandstanding, and what better way to do that than by proposing ten items that you will never follow for which you will never be held you accountable. Why do I think this is all a sham? Let’s lo...

Budget passes House
2008-03-13 00:42:00
AND IT’S BALANCED… FOR NOW As tempted as I am to be cynical about the likelihood of the State House ’s budget making it through the Senate and beyond the governor’s pen in tact, I must admit that I am shocked to hear they have already passed something — unanimously, at that. And what they passed is astounding for 21st Century South Carolina legislators: a balanced budget that cuts government growth by 4.5 percent yet still fully funds education and health care. Which is exactly why it won’t make it past the Senate. ?In the midst of a nation-wide economic slow down, the House rejected efforts to raise taxes and instead funded key areas of government while cutting others,? House Speaker Bobby Harrell said. ?I am pleased to see the House pass a budget that addresses our state?s educational priorities, our health care concerns and focuses on key economic development tools needed to grow our state?s economy.? In order to fully fund health care and pre...

WEBSITE SHUTS DOWN AFTER FITSNEWS UNMASKS “HARDEN GERVAIS” The mystery surrounding Columbia’s latest come-and-go anonymous blog has met its end. The foul-mouthed liberal antagonists behind “Columbia: A Sunny Place for Shady People” are none other than the relatively uninspiring duo of Corey Hutchins and Wes Wolfe, who FITSNews reports “write professionally for the Columbia City Paper and The (Columbia S.C.) The fun and games started this morning when FITSNews received an anonymous tip implying that Lt. Gov. André Bauer might be implicated in the same cocaine ring that snared former State Treasurer Thomas Ravenel last summer. WLTX ROLLS WITH STORY ABOUT ANDRE’S NEW RIDE I’ve written a lot of posts that have been picked up by mainstream media sources. I think it’s great and it shows the incredible impact that blogs have on setting the agenda and driving the news cycle (see: Matt Drudge). Take yesterday for example. Within a few hours of my post on “The new guv-lite mobile,” complete with a bunch of sweet pics, WLTX-TV in Columbia and a few other network news stations ran with a similar story. Hmm… Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer’s got a new ride. And this one’s definitely eye-catching. Bauer’s been driving around Columbia in a new Smart Car. The Passion model, and other similar vehicles, are made by Mercedes-Benz. They’re a short, bubble-shaped two-seater, perfect for getting around town on short trips. Mercedes-Benz officials say the car gets 35 miles per gallon in the city, and 41 on the highway. Bauer says he was looking for a fuel-efficien...

And for those with years of pent-up aggression and a profound dislike for others, it was the perfect event to band together and yell things out about how much they hate entire groups of people. Billed as an “Illegal Immigration Rally,” it was definitely more of a Hate Fest. How do I know it was a Hate Fest? Because Buddy Witherspoon was there. And he hates everyone… most of all those rascally Mexicans. Don’t take my word for it, though. Just watch the awesome inaudible clip above of him yelling out bumper sticker slogans he must have seen at the “Redneck Shop” about deporting millions of people and going after the evil corporations that hire them. ANDRE RIDES IN STYLE… AND NOW HE’S EVEN MORE ELECTRIC I think it’s safe to say that Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer won’t be going 101 mph in a 70 mph zone anytime soon. At least, not in his sweet new ride (pictured above), he won’t. A trip to the Statehouse today yielded an absolutely incredible find when I spotted Bauer’s brand spanking new smart car proudly parked between the building and the African-American Monument. At first I thought it was a joke and somebody had switched his #2 Lieutenant Governor tags with another person’s microcar, but I spoke with a number of sources who confirmed that, yes indeed, that’s his ride. Now, I hear the smart Fortwo (his model) can reach blistering speeds of up to 70 mph, so it will still be possible for him to speed. But at least he’ll be doing it in a more environmentally-friendly way. Something else he can do, go nearly 80 miles before having to re-charge for eight hours. And he’s going t...
