Bob Barr Urges Congress: No Surveillance of Americans Without Fourth Amendm

Bob Barr Urges Congress : No Surveillance of Americans Without Fourth Amendment Protections June 19, 2008 6:33 pm EST Atlanta , GA -- “In asserting his power to conduct warrantless searches of Americans, President George W. Bush has expressed his clear contempt for the Fourth Amendment.  So has Sen. John McCain, despite his reputation as a supposed maverick,” says Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president.  Now the Democratic-led Congress is preparing to approve a so-called compromise that gives the Bush administration almost everything it wants in order to expand dramatically the power of the federal government to surveil American citizens without court orders.  “ America desperately needs leaders who will stand up for the Bill of Rights,” observes Barr, “not those who flaunt its vital and time-honored protections.” The president already has the power to conduct surveillance of foreign terrorists.  The 30-year old Foreign Intelligence ...

Here is a article on our Governor candidate in North Carolina . Michael Munger might be the best candidate the Libertarian party has running anywhere in the country.N.C. Libertarian runs for serious attention By Mark BinkerStaff Writer Tuesday, Jun. 17, 2008 3:00 am Should Munger be included in the debates? (Web) RALEIGH — Libertarian candidate for governor Michael Munger's name will be on the ballot alongside Democrat Bev Perdue and Republican Pat McCrory. So, the Duke political science professor reasons he should be alongside them at upcoming debates. But at least one upcoming debate will exclude him while other hosts are having to be reminded that North Carolina officially has three parties. "If I'm invited to the debate, and I do a bad job, voters are going to say 'I'm not interested,'" Munger said. "If I do a good job, if I raise some ideas, some issues that other people aren't talking about, I can make the political system more competitive, more transparent.......

Bob Barr Challenges John McCain to Debate “Worst” Supreme Court Decision June 17th, 2008 Posted in Bob Barr | No Comments » From the Bob Barr 2008 Campaign: Barr Says Decision a Victory for Rule of Law, Constitution Atlanta, GA — “The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the importance of the ancient writ of habeas corpus, one of the bedrock guarantees of American liberty,” says Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president. The procedure, which predates America’s founding in British legal tradition, forces the government to justify an arrest in court. However, Sen. John McCain called the decision “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.” That is quite charge given a legal history that includes Supreme Court opinions such as Dred Scott, observes Barr. “The Court’s habeas corpus decision was a victory for all Americans more than any particular litigant, since it affirmed the duty of the executive branch to obey the law,” Barr explains. The...

The dream nominee is McCain's nightmare Current rating:3.08 by 25 users.   By Don McKeeColumnist Bob Barr has pumped new life into the Libertarian Party since winning its presidential nomination and a shot at spoiling Republican John McCain's chances. "Our phones are ringing off the hook and the e-mail inquiries have increased," Georgia party chairman Daniel Adams exulted last week in a news release. "We are seeing an increase in volunteerism, memberships and inquiries from the media has increased dramatically. We have never seen anything like this." Barr, a former Republican congressman from Marietta, has generated more news coverage for the little Libertarian party in eight weeks than it received in the previous eight years, a LP official said. Likewise, Texas Libertarians have been "energized" and are "extremely excited" over Barr's candidacy, a party official told a reporter before Barr spoke Saturday at the state convention in Fort Worth. They were so excited...

Bob Barr in the Houston Chronicle www.chron.comLibertarian candidate Barr says 2008 is 3rd-party year By ANGELA K. BROWNAssociated Press FORT WORTH, Texas — Americans are so fed up with the country's direction and worsening problems that this is the year they'll send a third-party candidate to the White House, Libertarian presidential nominee Bob Barr said Saturday. Barr, a former Republican congressman from Georgia, said at the Libertarian Party of Texas convention that he is asking citizens: "Have you had enough? ... I think this year, in this cycle, in this election, the answer will be yes." The luncheon crowd of about 125 gave Barr a standing ovation. In the parking lot, one pickup's bumper sticker read: "No more Republicrats. Choose freedom." Barr said polls show that Americans "by a distressingly large margin" feel the nation is on the wrong track. "They are desperate for change, desperate for something that will rekindle their hope. That's an opportunity that we have ...

Bob Barr may get post-Paul boost
2008-06-14 04:17:00
This is in todays www.ajc.com. I know a few people in this article and have enjoyed working with them. I would like to point out one thing in the article. Ike Hall said some people will vote for Chuck Baldwin. That will not happen in Georgia.Chuck Baldwin and Ralph Nader will not be on the ballot because your State house Reps and state Senators belive they know what is best for you and have keep them off the ballot. I can not believe people do not get upset with the lack of candidates we have to choose from. Maybe if the Georgia house can narrow our option down to one candidate by law we would be happy. If they took your right to vote away you would be up in arms but if they limit your options down to nothing you are O.K.? Comparing Ron Paul and Bob Barr on the crucial issues of the day
2008-06-13 17:04:00
I know we get some Ron Paul fans visiting from time to time. This was on Third party watch web site. I would love to see more Ron Paul people join the Libertarian party and help fight the fight for liberty in a home that would welcome them.Well here is list comparing the two.Comparing Ron Paul and Bob Barr on the crucial issues of the day Non-interventionism Ron Paul: “Non-interventionism is not isolationism. Non-intervention simply means America does not interfere militarily, financially, or covertly in the internal affairs of other nations. It does not we that we isolate ourselves; on the contrary, our founders advocated open trade, travel, communication, and diplomacy with other nations.” – source Bob Barr: “Our National Defense policy must renew a commitment to non-intervention. We are not the world’s police force and our long, yet recently tarnished, tradition of respecting the sovereignty of other nations is necessary, not from only a moral standpoint, but to regain...

Russ Verney asks for money for ballot access
2008-06-13 15:32:00
Dear Friend, Since I wrote you late yesterday, several hundred people have rushed us a contribution to help the Barr/Root Presidential campaign be on all 50 state ballots this November 4th. As you can imagine in a Presidential campaign there are hundreds (and sometimes it feels like thousands) of important projects that need our immediate attention, but in June – one issue dominates all others. And as I’m sure you know its making sure we get on all 50 state ballots. About 27 states are relatively easy but 23 take varying degrees of work But no question, Oklahoma is the hardest state.  In 2004 Oklahoma voters’ only choice was between a Republican and a Democrat. No third party or independent candidate was on the ballot – in fact they’ve rigged the election rules in Oklahoma so you can’t even write in a candidate’s name. Late yesterday, I got a phone call from Oklahoma State Chair, Angela O’Dell. To say Angela is passionate about her job as State Chair would ...

Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate finishes ballot access drive
2008-06-11 09:24:00
Redpath says Virginians do not need "six more years of the same two parties" Libertarian Party National Chairman and candidate for U.S. Senate William Redpath will deliver more than 16,000 signatures to the Virginia State Board of Elections on Tuesday in Richmond, concluding more than two months of petition gathering to qualify for ballot access as a Libertarian in the state of Virginia. Redpath, of Leesburg, will face Republican Jim Gilmore and Democrat Mark Warner for the seat currently held by five-term Republican Senator John Warner. "This will be an open seat, and one that is highly contested," says Redpath, who is a Vice President at BIA Financial Network, Inc. "My entry into the race will bring more competition by creating an alternative to the two establishment candidates.  Virginians deserve to get the best representation as possible in Washington, and we do this by inviting more choices into the selection process." Redpath will be delivering these petition signatur...

Bob Barr on the war on Drugs
2008-06-10 16:34:00
This is on the www.Huffingtonpost.comBob Barr I Was Wrong About The War On Drugs -- It's A Failure.     I'll admit it, just five years ago I was "Public Enemy Number 1" in the eyes of the Libertarian Party. In my 2002 congressional race for Georgia's Seventh District, the Libertarian Party ran scathing attack ads against my stand on Medical Marijuana. Today, I am their presidential nominee and will represent libertarians at the top of the ticket on November 4th. Huh? That's right, Bob Barr, formerly the War on Drugs loving, Wiccan mocking, Clinton impeaching Republican is the presidential nominee for the Libertarian Party. Now, you may be asking how this happened and my answer is simple: "The libertarians won." For more than three decades, the Libertarian Party and small "l" libertarians have done their part to prove to America that liberty is the answer to most of the problems that we face today. Over the past several years, I was one of the many p...

Delay plans on Voting for Barr
2008-06-08 11:58:00
Tom DeLay's wife plans to vote against McCain Tom DeLay NEWSMAKER INTERVIEW Tom DeLay will vote for John McCain but the former House Republican leader said his wife, Christine, is planning to vote for Libertarian presidential nominee Bob Barr . "I'm trying to convince my wife not to do that," the Texas Republican told editors and reporters at The Washington Times on Friday. "She said it publicly yesterday." Mr. Barr's candidacy is an issue conservatives appear to be grappling with since he won the Libertarian party's nomination on the sixth ballot at their May 25 convention in Denver. Early polls suggest Mr. Barr could draw small but significant support in key states such as Georgia and North Carolina, potentially complicating the electoral picture for Mr. McCain, Republicans' presumed presidential nominee. Some conservative leaders are expressing their concern over Mr. Barr's appeal to Republicans who say they don't want to vote for Mr. McCain. They list a host of probl...

Digg the LP
2008-06-06 00:24:00
In 2004 I started a group called "The Gary Nolan Activist Committee". We were not affiliated with the LP or with the Gary Nolan campaign. I believe that this was one of the first attempts to organize mass emails to media outlets among other things. This same type of idea was used by Ron Paul supporters using myspace, facebook, Ron Paul Forums etc. These results prove that when activists organize on the internet there can be some major results.Last year I was serving as national volunteer coordinator for the Steve Kubby campaign. Kubby released a response to the President's state of the union address. This was then posted to the site digg.com. People liked it and it got bumped up to the main page of Digg . The kubby2008 site got so much traffic that the servers crashed. This just shows how effective these new social news sites like digg and propeller are. If you have never used them this is how it works:1. Someone finds a news story and submits it to digg.2. Every digg member gets on...
Barr chiseling into McCain voter base / Washington Times
2008-06-04 17:19:00
Barr chiseling into McCain voter base / Washington Times Bloomberg News Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr Bob Barr's Libertarian presidential campaign is poised to play a serious role in this year's elections, with early polls showing him taking away enough votes from Sen. John McCain to give Democrats a chance to win states that should be safely Republican. Polls in Georgia and North Carolina over the last two weeks show Mr. Barr winning 8 percent and 6 percent respectively of the presidential vote, and in both cases helping keep likely Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama within striking distance of Mr. McCain in those states — which, taken together, account for more electoral votes than Florida, Pennsylvania or Ohio. "Barr does throw a monkeywrench in Republican plans in states people otherwise take for granted as Republican states," said Matt Towery, a former political adviser to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and CEO of InsiderAdvantage, an At...

I believe Barr is starting to surprise some people.Hat Tip Third Party WatchBarr campaign tells haters to… ...not “let the door hit you on the backside on your way out!” Yesterday, James Buchanan wrote: White conservatives and White Nationalists now have an unpleasant choice: They can vote for the Libertarian candidate Bobb Barr, an honest, decent man, who has consistently stood for conservative principles even though he stands no real chance of winning. A vote for Bob Barr would at least send a message to the Republican Party that conservatives and Whites won’t sit still as they are stuck with a liberal presidential candidate like McCain. Supporting Bob Barr might even pave the way for a Third Party to replace the increasingly repugnant Republican Party. Or patriotic Whites can vote for John McCain d...

Identity Politics and the LP Ticket
2008-06-01 03:37:00
During her ill-fated bid for the Libertarian Party presidential nomination this year, Dr. Mary Ruwart faced some criticism -- even from her supporters -- for highlighting her gender as a reason to support her. At the end of her liveblog of the LP presidential debate, ElfNinosMom wrote, "My least favorite candidate is Ruwart, she lost any possibility of my support or respect when she made the comment about how women want to vote for a woman." Sobriquet praised Ruwart but said she "did try to capitalize on her gender, positioning herself as poised to take advantage of the tide of gender politics stirred up by Hillary Clinton." Jacqueline Passey also said Ruwart "might have leaned on her gender as a reason to vote for her a bit much, but she is correct that this year it is probably a tactical advantage." While I am turned off by appeals to identity politics, Ruwart was correct that her gender could have led otherwise-indifferent voters to consider her candidacy, especially now that it...

Interview With Ron Paul (Newsweek ) Talks about Bob Barr It is time for The R3volution to continue the fight. I welcome any and all with open arms to the Libertarian partyJOHN McCain may be the presumptive nominee, but the Republican race isn't over—at least not to Ron Paul. The Texas congressman remains an official GOP candidate and has about $5 million in the bank, and a mighty band of fanatical followers. Will the fiercely antiwar conservative become a distraction for McCain at the Republican convention? Paul spoke with NEWSWEEK's Daniel Stone. Excerpts: What kind of presence will you have at the convention? We'll have a big rally there one of the days. Since they won't give us a spot, we'll make our own spot. We won't disrupt things—that doesn't achieve anything. But we'll have a presence and present views and try to … get in on the committees to vote on platforms. That's not disruptive. What are your feelings toward [Libertarian nominee] Bob Barr? We're prett...

Bob Barr on the Military
2008-05-30 23:57:00
Bob Barr on the Military From the Barr 2008 Presidential Campaign: Senators Barack Obama and John McCain have been trading charges over whether talking to Iran would be appeasement, notes Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president. But “the issue is not talking, but talking from a position of strength and not expecting too much in return,” he says. Even Sen. McCain, in his recent speech on nuclear disarmament, called for negotiations with Russia, despite that government’s turn to authoritarianism. “By his own reasoning, shouldn’t that be considered appeasement,” asked Barr. The fundamental challenge facing American foreign policy is not whether the U.S. talks to repressive regimes. The question, insists Barr, “is whether America will adopt a more restrained foreign policy, focused on protecting the core interests of the United States and the American people.” “What reason is there to defend Europe, which has a larger population and economy than America,...

Bob Barr Comments on California Home Schooling Case Hat Tip Third party WatchFrom the Bob Barr 2008 Presidential Committee: The right of parents to home school their children is under attack in California, warns Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president. A state appellate court is preparing to hear oral arguments in a case in which the trial judge ruled that parents had no constitutional right to home school their children. Education is a state and local issue, notes Barr, but “even more so it is a parental responsibility.” For good reason, he explains,“more than 80 years ago the Supreme Court upheld the right of parents to determine their children’s schooling, calling it an essential liberty under the 14th Amendment.” He urged the California courts to look to that case, Pierce v. Society of Sisters, in which the Court stated that “the child is not the mere creature of the state.” If the courts fail in their duty to protect the parents’ constitutional ...

Bob Barr on Neil CavutoMay 28th, 2008 by Stephen Gordon CAVUTO: Six percent, that’s a pretty good number, considering you haven’t done squat yet. I mean, you just got nominated. So, how do you become a Ross Perot phenomenon? BARR: Well, I’m interested in being more than a Ross Perot phenomenon. I have great respect for him. And, as a matter of fact, his campaign manager is now our campaign manager. We’re putting together a team that will deliver a positive message to an awful lot of new and disenfranchised older voters. CAVUTO: Will you be on all 50 state ballots? How does that stand? BARR: We hope to be. The Libertarian Party, alone among America’s third parties, has enjoyed — not universal, but near-universal ballot access. Last cycle, in 2004, we had — Libertarians were on the ballots in 48 of 50 states, plus the District of Columbia. This time, we hope to gain at least that degree of ballot access, if not 49 or 50 states. CAVUTO: All right, you know the argument ...

Here is something from The Barr campaign Dear Friend, Congratulations... you did it. It was your timely, generous, and loyal support that put us over the top. Today, my schedule is jam-packed with long campaign strategy sessions — my only "breaks" have been talking with the media explaining our platform of cutting the size, cost, and power of the federal government. Now, I need your help to reach the grassroots and the media with our message of freedom. There are just 161 days left to election day — but we have an immediate challenge of furnishing headquarters with high tech equipment to communicate instantly with tens of thousands of supporters and media contacts. And we need to do this in the next five days. Please consider re-investing in the Barr 2008 campaign: your gift of $100 or $1000 or even $25 or $50 is urgently needed. May I count on your support? The next few days will be busy with the technical, organizational, and promotional aspects of a national campa...
