Democratic National Convention - Citizen Interview - Tricia McCarthy
2008-08-26 23:10:00
Tricia is local to Denver and comes to have a quiet smoke away from the hubbub of the passers-by on 16th. She is wearing an Obama button and tells me she’s been out at the events today. “I’ve been to some marches at Civic Center Park…US-Iraq Veterans Against the War”. She says that Obama is ...

Democratic National Convention - Citizen Interview - Reese & Danielle Matth
2008-08-26 22:29:00
The Matthews are selling a commemorative DNC shirt, and say that they tried to avoid the partisan divide by selling something just to commemorate the convention, rather than a particular candidate. No luck, however - last night, after Michele Obama’s speech, Reese and Danielle were with some other vendors and report that the crowd was ...

Pelosi?s Catholic Catechism Gaffe?an Opportunity for Correct Catholic Catec
2008-08-26 22:08:00
This week Speaker Pelosi commented on what she thought was the correct understanding on the Catholic Church?s teachings on the morality of abortion. Needless to say, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives could not have been any further from the mark in her personal interpretation of the Catholic moral teachings surrounding this ...

Democratic National Convention, Day Two
2008-08-26 22:08:00
After a series of harrowing adventures on foot trying to navigate the wilds of Denver’s convention district yesterday, your humble blogger is taking a more sedentary approach today. Weeping only slightly for the expense, I’ve parked the news wagon at a secure location and am currently blogging from Writer’s Square, just a few blocks from ...

2008-08-26 20:56:00
The Bounty Hunter that had become a very unlikable person by many because of his part in getting Caylee Anthony?s mother, Casey Anthony released from jail last week might be in a little trouble himself now. Sunday afternoon a four member rock band was riding in front of the Anthony?s home on a Uhaul flatbed trailer ...

Movie Review: Billy Blue Hair ? Why Do Giraffes Have Long Necks ? Personal
2008-08-26 20:52:00
When I was a baby, my mom used the UPCs from packages of Pampers to send in and receive and free tape of lullabies with my name inserted into them.  A soothing voice sang songs about whatever it is that babies enjoy and it would say my name at opportune times.  I have no clue ...

More than 400 pages of documents with details about the case of Caylee Marie Anthony missing were released yesterday including transcripts taken by detectives from Casey Anthony, Caylee?s 22 year old mother. Movie Review: Camp Rock
2008-08-26 18:40:00
I went to four years of band camp in high school.  It was all day long, in god-awful heat, with a bunch of god-awful people for weeks.  It was terrible.  It was like going through hell every single day but it taught me perseverance and other amorphous character traits.  Whatever it was, it was most ...

Zimbabwe: Jeered as he opens Parliament ? is this the end for Mugabe?
2008-08-26 18:03:00
MDC Members of Parliament jeered Mugabe as he delivered a speech marking the opening of parliament in Zimbabwe today (The Times, London).  The MDC MPs ignored intimidation provided by a flypast of air force jets, and the 21-gun salute that accompanied Mugabe?s arrival in full presidential regalia.  This brave and courageous demonstration follows a surprise move ...

McCain Taps Bigfoot For Vice President (a satire)
2008-08-26 14:35:00
In a brilliant move clearly aimed at appeasing the Christian Far Right, John McCain stunned the political world by announcing that Bigfoot will be his vice presidential choice. The surprise announcement brought unified praise from Bush/Cheney Republicans, Pavlovian evangelical extremists, and knuckle-dragging pundits in what is being dubbed a bold political stroke. Rush Limbaugh expressed mild ...

DNC Night One (Somewhere Near Pepsi Center)
2008-08-26 14:34:00
Instead of watching Senator Kennedy's passing of the spiritual mantle to Barrack Obama I ended up watching Intervention with the story of an alcoholic, Philip, and his struggle to find sobriety. Under other circumstances there would be a good joke in there. I miss other circumstances, but even I can't take the easy shots at Kennedy anymore. As a Republican living in Denver, watching the DNC brings a particular interest. It seems that there is a nervous energy on both sides of the aisle, and it's an energy that is coming from the same source: will the Democrats throw away another opportunity at the Oval Office in a year where they should be the clear favorites? Make no mistake, 2008 should be the Year of the Donkey, but the political trends don't seem to be supporting that idea.

Democratic Convention - Barack Obama Video Speech
2008-08-26 04:58:00
Barack Obama just came on, live via video from whatever part of Outer Mongolia he’s camped out in. His daughter is hogging the voiceover…”Daddy what city are you in?” “Not now, Sasha, I’m running for president.” No, that’s not what he said. But he’s chatting with the kids and sharing love to Michelle. Nice, but why is it ...

Democratic Convention - Michelle Obama Speech
2008-08-26 04:55:00
Crowd is pretty noisy for Michelle entrance. Unfortunate choice of color in her clothing - she’s blending into the backdrop. She can feel her father looking down on her proudly. Aww, that’s kind of nice. Older brother has watched over her “every step of the way” along this incredible journey of discovery and exploration etc. ...

Man made famine looms in Zimbabwe
2008-08-26 04:47:00
Famines occur due to war, anarchy, floods, droughts, insects or blights. Yet in the last century the most horrible famines are those planned by the government in the absence of war, to punish their own people, or from a callus attitude that political power is more important than human life. Such famines occurred in the ...

Democratic Convention - Michelle Obama Speech Introduction(s)
2008-08-26 04:36:00
Starting with video about how great Michelle is. The video is evidently to introduce Michelle’s brother, who will in turn introduce Michelle. I find myself resenting that there isn’t a slide show that introduces the video. You can’t just throw people into the introduction to the introduction, Democrats! OK, she was a hot corporate lawyer. Then ...

Democratic Convention - Jim Leach Speech
2008-08-26 04:17:00
Must…stay…awake…. Jim Leach, moderate Republican, addressed us after Kennedy went off. Remember all that energy from the Kennedy speech? Yeah, bye-bye. Way to drain the energy out of the room, Jim. (Apparently he’s a secret Republican operative. Good work, Jim! Too dull to blog about. Michelle Obama is next up.

Democratic Convention - Kennedy Speech
2008-08-26 04:12:00
Just hauled in to catch the Kennedy speech. First impression, wow! Apparently the rumors of his feebleness were exaggerated. I detect a political mastermind at work there, but it was an effective moment nonetheless. Most interesting thing in the speech is his call for healthcare as a fundamental right. This is probably in the platform ...

Book Review: Martha Stewart?s Cookies
2008-08-26 02:42:00
With a title of “Martha Stewart ’s Cookies” and her smiling picture plastered on the cover one would expect Martha Stewart to have written the cookbook. Instead it’s “From The Editors of Martha Stewart Living” magazine and as such appears to be a compilation of recipes and features that have run in the magazine. After the table ...

So Now a Tired Old White Man On Both Tickets?
2008-08-25 22:53:00
The appeal of Barack Obama was that he unquestionably offered something new. Not just his race, his youth, his intelligence and his energy but above all his absolute break with the past. A break with the era of the Clintons who he eventually triumphed over in the Primaries but also a break with the old ...

Reax To Biden Pick
2008-08-25 17:59:00
With Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) as Sen. Barack Obama?s (D-IL) running mate, you have a two-senator ticket - all talk, no executive action; no ?favorite son? advantage in a key swing state with a huge chunk of votes in the electoral college; and a man whom voters resoundingly rejected when he was running for the ...

Beyond Mars ? The Crimson Fleet, by R.G. Risch: Book Review
2008-08-25 17:37:00
?Beyond Mars ? is a fast-moving read with an old-fashioned pulp adventure-in-space aesthetic about it. It is of that sub-genre classified as military science fiction, with lots of blazing broadsides updated to the twenty-second century. There is of course the dashing main hero and his stalwart sidekick, some interesting secondary heroes and heroines, assorted love interests, ...

Catholics for Choice?a theological oxymoron!
2008-08-25 15:22:00

Always being intrigued by groups that call themselves Catholic, I continued to read the email but suddenly realized the group of so called Catholics, was indeed a well orchestrated oxymoron of descriptive adjectives. Catholics for Choice are engaged in a ...

Knowing History Puts It All Into Perspective
2008-08-25 13:57:00
The politics in an election year gets so overwrought that reading about history puts things into perspective. Americans don’t realize that the lack of violence in our elections is not normal in world history, nor is the transfer of power from one person to another a common occurance in world history. So last week’s UKTimes had an ...
