I hate this class!
2008-02-06 10:05:00
I took my first algebra test last night. It was challenging. I wound up taking nearly the entire two hours. I don't know that I did that well on it, there were fifteen questions of which I'm sure I got at least a half dozen right, then there was one question I left half-answered and another I didn't answer at all.And another WebCT quiz is due this afternoon by 4 pm. I really wish she would change her deadline to midnight to submit these online because damn--we've all been preparing for this test which covered us through Chapter 2.5, why would we want to go too far beyond that chapter's homework and distract ourselves? But no, the next chapter's quiz is due this afternoon and I've only got my lunch hour to read the chapter and figure it out.I'm really hating this class. It's consuming me and taking valuable time away from my other course--my major course---History.

What is wrong with people?

I'm not in a bad mood, I'm not depressed but just so you know, the rant I'm about to go on is because I'm just disgusted. This story about a bald eagle found with a broken wing and bullet fragments in her windpipe. Thank goodness vets were able to save her and she is now recovering. This story about people abandoning animals at an unoccupied rental home in South Florida. This story about two teenage bitches who robbed a girl scout selling cookies, then go on the record saying they are pissed they have to give the money back and are pissed because they got caught.Parents murdering their children? Children murdering parents? What is going ON here? What is WRONG with people?

Mississippi House Bill would prohibit restaurants from serving obese people

Could it be? Another reason I wouldn't vote for Hillary?
2008-02-04 10:30:00
Geez, I can't keep up with them, the reasons are just coming out of the woodwork. I don't even have to make them up, she's doing all the work for me!This time she was on This Week with George Stephanopoulous discussing her plans for Universal Health Care. But first, I should reference former candidate John Edwards idea for a universal health care plan because it ties into Hillary 's statements. According to this November 2007 ABC news report:Under the Edwards plan, when Americans file their income taxes, they would be required to submit a letter from an insurance provider confirming coverage for themselves and their dependents. If someone did not submit proof of coverage, the Internal Revenue Service would notify a newly established regional or state-based health-care agency (which Edwards has dubbed a Health Care Market). Those regional agencies would then evaluate whether the uninsured individual was eligible for Medicare (which covers those over 65), Medicaid (which covers the ...

Who's flying the plane?
2008-02-03 16:03:00
Nobody's flying the plane!Ok that's an old line from "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" and if you haven't seen it, you should.Which brings me to my next rant....For the past several months, Anderson-Columbia has been performing road construction at US Highway 129 and County Road 340 just a few miles from where my parents live. This is part of a larger $10,588,800.65 job which extends from the area where they live to the county line. The only reasonable way to get to town (and towns beyond that) from their house is through that intersection. All those years we've traveled that area, I've never had an accident there, neither has any member of my family nor any of my friends, or most people I've known. And yet, the state is spending money to adjust the height and slope of hills to provide better sight distance. That's because some people don't know how to drive. You see, there's a red flashing light on the east and west sides of the intersection and a constant yellow flashing caut...

If Wesley Snipes can do it...
2008-02-02 15:38:00
...why can't the rest of us? Hell I'd love to tell the IRS to go to hell but after I felt the initial good feeling from doing that, I'd still have to pay my taxes.Wesley Snipes claims the IRS has no legal authority to collect income taxes so that's one of the reasons he didn't pay them. But after his trial his attorney says he's ready to make amends with the government. Hmm....The IRS is very specific on the penalities for tax cheats...Civil and Criminal Enforcement against Tax Cheats On the RiseIR-2004-48, April 6, 2004WASHINGTON D.C. — The Department of Justice, working closely with the Internal Revenue Service, has stepped up efforts to identify, investigate and punish tax cheats. Of particular note are the government’s efforts to enhance criminal enforcement, use civil injunctions to stop abusive tax schemes, and investigate promoters and users of tax shelters.“Working with the Justice Department, the IRS is ramping up its enforcement efforts, particularly for high-i...

The hypocrisy of Hillary...
2008-02-02 02:47:00
There are a number of reasons I won't vote for Hillary , none of them have to do with her husband, but with her directly. While there are reasons I don't want to vote for the others as well, this time I just have to address what I affectionately call "the hypocrisy of Hillary"During the debate with Senator Obama the other night, Jeanne Cummings of Politico.com asked:Senator Clinton, this one is for you. Judgment has been an issue that's been raised as part of this debate about Iraq. It's been raised by Senator Obama on a number of occasions. And as this debate has gone on, more than half of the Politico readers have voted for this question, and it is, in effect, a judgment question. It comes from Howard Schumann (sp) from Pittsburgh, Maine. And he asks: Before the U.S. invasion of Iraq, you could have voted for the Levin amendment, which required President Bush to report to Congress about the UN inspection before taking military action. Why did you vote against that amendment?Hil...

Wow! Did it really take all that police power to get her to the hospital?
2008-01-31 03:59:00
I'm just amazed that it took more than a dozen motorcycle cops, two police squad cars and two police helicopters to get one somewhat depressed, slightly mental but otherwise harmless 27 year old woman into an ambulance and to the hospital.Couldn't all but one or two of those police officers been more useful elsewhere in the city? I mean uh--hello--have you ever been to LA at night? It's not like there's suddenly no perps walking the streets awaiting the chance to attack innocent victims!

Vernon & Marty Ummel of San Diego are filing a lawsuit against the realtor who sold them their new $1.2 million luxury home--back in 2005.Mrs. Ummel claims the realtor didn't give her a written appraisal until after the deal went through, that he had told them the appraisal value and they took him on his word. She claims other homes in the same subdivision are going for $105,000 to $175,000 less than what their house is actually worth. They're asking for $105,000 in damages.I don't even have to go into the whole "buyer beware" and "get everything in writing" now do I? I mean for most adults, that's just common sense. Unless of course you're so wealthy that you don't have to have common sense, in which case you hire someone to have it for you.I hope they lose this one, what a lesson eh?

It's called a DO NOT CALL REGISTRY for a reason!
2008-01-29 04:15:00
Twice tonight while I lay in bed sleeping I received phone calls from a number 631-277-7025. I didn't pick up the phone, but did find the number through *69. Then I googled them and found out they were some asshole telemarketers called "Marketing Incorporated"Bastards! So after I woke up the second time, I went to the national do not call registry site and filed TWO complaints, one for each call. From the info I found on Google, apparently there's a LOT of people complaining abou them. Friggin assholes! Maybe I could call their CEO while he's sleeping and see how he likes it!

2008-01-28 02:24:00
The phone number DH and I have had for nearly seven years now was once owned by a couple named Aaron and Penny F.Not long after the phone company assigned us that number, we began receiving calls almost daily fom collection agencies looking for Aaron and Penny. On occasion one asshole company would even claim I was lying and that I was Penny! We began leaving nasty outgoing messages telling people "this is NOT the home of Penny F so please do NOT leave a message!!" and still they would leave messages. And one time about two years ago we received a call from an insurance company in Virginia about a recent auto accident. It troubled me because at that time we'd had the number at least three years. I began to worry she was intentionally giving out her old number so people couldn't find her. Which of course I would not doubt for a moment! We hadn't heard a peep from anyone in over a year when on Friday, of the blue I got a call for her, it was from a collection agency who left an aut...

PSA: The IRS does NOT send you email!!

Guess it's time to do some community service here with a PSA. Anytime I can save some poor schmo from being duped, I take the opportunity to do just that. I received not one but three emails today to my hotmail account from the "Internal Revenue Service" at IRS.ORG with the subject line Internal Revenue Service Online Refund Form. Of course I already knew it was a scam, because first of all the IRS doesn't send emails asking you to file online and second the official IRS site is IRS.GOV.After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of $375.20. Please submit the tax refund request and allow us 3-9 days in order to process it. A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons. For example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline. To access the form for your tax refund, click here.Even though the linked page at malibu702.com looks like the IRS website and even uses the IRS logo, it is not, I ...

Click the first screen for part one of the interview, and when it's over click the second screen below it.Great interview. Sly's a good guy and a great actor and director. He takes his profession seriously especially the Rambo films. The movie has a real objective, it's shocking and thrilling! Not only is he a great actor but director as well. I've always known that, though so many still underestimate him. Can't wait till the 25th! Oh wait that's TODAY!

Government welfare at it again...
2008-01-24 18:19:00
This story just pisses me off!People who did not pay federal income taxes but who had earned income of more than $3,000 would get checks of $300 per individual or $600 per couple. A Democratic aide and Republican aide said there will be an additional amount per child, which could be in the neighborhood of $300. Those who earn up to $75,000 individually or up to $150,000 as a couple will be eligible for the payments, said Republican and Democratic sources familiar with the tentative deal. The agreement includes a robust package of business incentives and help for homeowners facing possible mortgage foreclosures. The Treasury Department still must analyze the numbers to determine the price tag of the stimulus package, sources said. To get to the agreement, Democrats dropped calls for increases in food stamps and an extension of unemployment compensation. Republicans agreed to allow people who pay Social Security taxes but not income taxes to get the checks, sources said. Why in hell is...

This is the hardest semester so far...
2008-01-24 03:29:00
Without a doubt this is the toughest semester so far in my college years. Even last term with three courses and a full-time job, a house, husband and two cats to care for, I managed it. This term, I seem to be in the books all the time, even at work, with never enough time to keep just a chapter ahead. I've got my time managed, I keep the schedule over my desk in my home office where I can see it. DH works with me to help out. And still I cannot manage to catch up. Memorizing formulas consumes half my time while the other half is taken up by a ton of reading and writing assignments. What am I going to do?

The professor asks: "What does the Declaration of Independence mean to you?
2008-01-23 01:06:00
My official written response to the discussion question..."We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."...Benjamin Franklin, at the signing of the Declaration of Independence The Declaration was the official resolution put forth by the new American nation declaring that the people would stand for the King's tyranny no more. As stated so eloquently by Thomas Jefferson, the purpose of the resolution was "in order to place before mankind the common sense of the matter in terms so plain and simple as to command their assent."The main reasons for putting forth the declaration were simple--the American colonies were declaring to the world their grievances against King George and their intent to separate and become a free nation. The war for independence was on, the American army was outclassed and outnumbered by the British and at times support waned, even among the weary troops, who though malnourished, tired, and weary, persevered and kept going. The Declaratio...

Why? Deaths of Key Deer probedTHE ASSOCIATED PRESSKEY WEST - Wildlife officials are investigating the killings of several endangered Key deer, the tiny deer that live exclusively in the Florida Keys.In one incident last month, a Big Pine Key resident found three severed Key deer heads on federal property. In a second incident, a deer was found alive but with a 3-foot-long spear in its neck. The deer had to be euthanized last week. Investigators do not think the incidents are related. A count conducted in 2001 found approximately 700 of the deer. Killing Key deer is a crime under the Endangered Species Act and punishable by fines or jail time or both. The Key Deer are precious, harmless and endangered. They are the smallest of the deer species in North America. The adult males stand about 30 inches high while the females are about 26 high at the shoulders. They are harmless and enjoy wandering about feeding on native plants and grasses mostly at dawn and dusk. The maiming and ...

Machen says no cuts to summer school...
2008-01-19 18:07:00
Funny how Machen tossed around the idea of cutting Summer classes but two weeks later it's off the table."The reality is, we can't do without summer school for lots of reasons, one of which is just the economics of it," he said during the meeting Thursday. "The amount of money that we would lose far exceeds the $16 million that we wouldhave to cut out of our budget."Well duh, you mean you didn't realize that before you made the remarks that got so many people riled up?Geez. In the meantime, UF may have to take out a state loan to help cover the shortfall. I'm wondering how the budget shortfall will affect the quality of education. I won't lie and say I'm not concerned about my own education, I am very concerned. I'm concerned about the quality of instruction as well as class sizes. I don't want all of my courses taught by graduate teaching assistants, I want the benefit of actual professors. It's not that TA's don't have anything to offer, they do, but I would prefer that ...

This story out of a local town, Ft. White , is appalling.A group of bullies which included a few of the school's athletes beat up a freshman because they thought he was involved in some recent thefts in the gym. The perps went to a classroom where the teen was, knocked on the door which was opened by another student, went in, confronted the freshman, checked his belongings, then beat him up. Despite the fact a teacher was in the classroom at the time and tried to get between them, the perps beat up him up anyway and wouldn't stop until several teachers and students got involved and put a stop to it.The victim had absolutely nothing to do with the thefts. Now his mother has taken him out of that school and put him in another one, because he's scared. Make s no sense that this poor kid has to leave the school and eventually the other kids, the asshole bullies will get to go back.Even though a couple of the students were arrested and some suspended, I don't think it's enough. Can we really afford a rebate right now?
2008-01-18 02:36:00
The President wants to give us back $800 per taxpayer in an effort to boost the economy. Congress thinks the money should be given only to those who make less than $150,000 per year.First off I disagree with it in the first place but if it is done, everyone who pays taxes should receive it. I have to wonder how many people who either don't file or pay taxes or who actually wind up with zero liability after all their earned income, child and other credits will be getting these checks? I say uh-no, why should you get money back if you don't even pay into the system?Second, man we're in a deficit here. We've got the biggest government expansion in decades, I know for sure in my lifetime. We're financing a lot of programs, our forces in Iraq, aid to other countries, and so many thousands of other things----how in hell can this government afford to give BILLIONS back to the American people? I mean come on, if they really don't need it, then perhaps we need to be revisiting the issu...

Update on Maria Lauterbach...
2008-01-15 18:22:00
An update on the case of murdered Marine Lcpl Maria Lauterbach :From CNN.comLauterbach had accused Laurean of raping her. She had a protective order against Laurean, but it expired September 24, military records show.In the military protective order, Laurean was forbidden from contacting Lauterbach in any manner, including through a third party, and ordered to stay at least 1,000 feet from her.The order also showed Lauterbach and Laurean worked in the same unit at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Ok the Marine Corps did issue a protective order against him but it should have been in place until the Marines investigation was over, or was it over at that time? Also, if it was still ongoing, they were still stationed together. He was still a threat to her.Somebody out there knows where this bastard is....I hope he fries for what he did.

This story is a fine example of what happens...I've read several sources on the story of the SWAT team invading the Colorado home of the Shiflett family and holding them at gunpoint, and all stories seem to say the same thing. And interestingly enough, although the Sheriff justifies his actions by saying Mr. Shiflett has a violent history, when asked, the Sheriff can't seem to recall any incident (outside of one in 2005) in which John Shiflett has been violent. In the 2005 case, a man was in Shiflett's house threatening him and Shiflett himself called the cops and chased the man out with an axe. While the Sheriff has been cited as saying John Shiflett has a history of violence, there's no record before or after the 2005 incident in which the man was simply running off a threat to his family.Now...how would you feel if your child were hurt and you knew how to care for him or her and a nosy neighbor called the paramedics, they showed up at your door and when you told them you had ...

According to this latest story from CNN regarding the missing and presumed murdered Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach, who reported to Marine officials that another Marine, Cesar Armando Laurean had raped her eight months ago...Military officials said Laurean was not taken into custody after Lauterbach reported the alleged rape because there was information the two carried on "some sort of friendly relationship" after she filed the complaint against him."The information ... leads us to believe that she still had some kind of contact" with him, said Paul Ciccarelli, agent in charge of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service at Camp Lejeune, this week. It's been a while since I've been in the military but my common sense tells me that regardless of an assumed friendly relationship, they should have been separated and given orders not to be in contact with one another. This would protect both parties during the course of the investigation (after all a person is innocent until proven gu...
President Machen at it again...
2008-01-11 01:30:00
Now he's proposing cutting summer school at UF. All in the name of the budget crisis. You know I remember a time when UF required all students attend at least ONE semester of summer school. Many courses are taught year-round because they are in high demand. If they were to cut summer school not only would students not graduate on time but the courses would have to eventually be taught in fall or spring. But who is going to teach them? Faculty and teaching assistants are already stretched thin and there is neither the manpower to teach additional sections in fall/spring nor the classroom space to expand those existing sections.Simply put if the courses are not made up in fall or spring, students won't get out on time. Doesn't that go against UF's mission to get students in and out as quickly as possible?Machen states that shutting down buildings over the summer would save energy costs. But would it? Would turning off the lights for three months really contribute that much to the $...
