Latest on Federal Response to Fires
2007-10-27 00:00:00
President Bush's photo-op visit to fire-ravaged San Diego caused aggravation for homeowners and firefighters. The presidential motorcade blocked access to residents who had just been allowed to return to their homes and prevented firefighters from getting to showers and meals....

Late Again
2007-10-26 00:00:00
Not surprisingly, federal help was late to support fighting the wildfires in Southern California. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune: Why weren't U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard planes already at nearby airfields and ready to drop water or...

Criticism Mounts of Poor Federal Efforts in California Wildfires
2007-10-26 00:00:00
Today's San Diego Union-Tribune continued its coverage of the poor federal response to the wildfires that have devastated much of the county. Customs delays to get a Canadian firefighting aircraft in, red tape in joining Marine corps forces with California ...

People Getting Dumber; Then Will Split Into Two Species?
2007-10-26 00:00:00
American kids are now "dumber than dirt" with worrying implications on the intelligence of the next generation. We commented on this last year with our report on the wrong people having babies, leading to a future idiocracy. Going one step...

Misery Roundup
2007-10-01 00:00:00
Inept President, Greedy Corporations, and U.S. Debt Bush's sham climate conference -- which the lapdog media in the U.S. dutifully reported the way the white house wanted them to -- is already generating criticism around the world for its failures...

Brain Injuries and Iraq War Vets
2007-09-29 00:00:00
The U.S. Army is testing the brains of troops to be newly deployed in Iraq to help them "baseline" a soldier's cognitive abilities and thus make it easier to diagnose and treat possible head injuries incurred later while stationed in...

Idiocy and Cowardice
2007-09-22 00:00:00
Which is worse? Idiocy or cowardice? The Democrats are displaying both. This whole bit with moveon.org and its "betray us - Petraeus" ad. Perfect time to remind people of Swiftboat, and that the Republicans can "dish it but can't take...

A particularly strong good riddance
2006-12-02 20:06:02
The election results were overwhelmingly positive.  So many creeps were swept out.  But one in particular deserves special notice. Richard Pombo is from California's 11th congressional district, in the San Joaquin Valley.  He has got to be one of the most vile soon-to-be ex-members of Congress.  Pombo is a far right-wing, environment-hating freak.  Key objectives during his now-ended term:  overturn the endangered species act; allow commercial whaling; sell public lands to mining, energy and logging companies; allow drilling just about everywhere (arctic, offshore, etc.); gutting of environmental protections; allow banned toxic pesticides and chemicals.  You get the picture.  Add to this scandal and a terrible voting record on social issues and you've got one fucked up congressman. Pombo was in charge of the House Resources Committee.  He used his position to help pass legislation to defile the environment and help corporations in ev...

Friday Round-up
2006-12-02 20:06:02
Bush and Cheney each wore blue neckties today, in another "gesture" of bipartisanship.  Suddenly they have nothing but kind words for Pelosi, Reid and other Democrats.  Remember, these are the same guys who a few days ago said a vote for a Democrat was a vote for terrorists. Wall Street Journal suggests that the endless Republican gerrymandering may have backfired on them. Lane Hudson, who first posted the Mark Foley IM thread on his blog, finally speaks out.  The guy has balls."It's the Washington culture that allowed this to happen.  Now we know the FBI, a host of media organizations, Republican leadership ? all were in possession of this same information. And no one did anything about it."GMWatch (genetically modified) reports that a class action suit was filed against Donald Rumsfeld, Monsanto, NutraSweet and the American Diabetes Association.  The suit alleges that the artificial sweetener is a deadly neurotoxin unfit for human co...

Still Doesn't Get It
2006-12-02 20:06:02
Rove shows what a real wanker he is Not that we needed any more proof. But Karl Rove show no signs of reality setting in to his altered-universe despite last week's election results. Rove gave his first interview following last week's election to Time's Mike Allen.  In what now seems to be a juvenile and pathetic attempt, Rove tries once again to spin the election results in a way that shows that the Dem victories really didn't mean that much Rove is famous for his political statistics, and his team has come up with an array of figures to contend that the Republicans' loss of 29 seats in the House and six in the Senate is not so out of whack with the historic norms. In all sixth year midterms, the President's party has lost an average of 29 House seats and 3 Senate seats, according to these figures. In all sixth-year midterms since World War II, the loss was an average of 31 House and 6 Senate seats. And in all wartime midterms since 1860, the average loss was 32 House...

Reaching Backwards
2006-12-02 20:06:02
Forget about any hopes for progress.  We're now reaching back over 15 years to an earlier failure, George H.W. Bush.  The single-term, do-nothing president who was thrown out of office.  The one who said there was a lot of economic opportunity in the country because of a help wanted sign he saw at a fast food restaurant.  The one who threw up on Japanese leaders during a tragic trip there, dragging executives from America's auto companies, which were in as bad of shape as they are now.  The one who was amazed at supermarket scanner technology, which was then already a decade old.  The one who didn't push thru any meaningful domestic agenda, flip-flopped on taxes, never understood voter frustrations over the economy, didn't finish the job in Iraq, never addressed unfair trade practices around the world, and did nothing for HIV/AIDS.  That George H.W. Bush. After initially ignoring daddy and seeking advice from the bible-thumping neo-con crowd, ...

Genetically modified bullying
2006-12-02 20:06:02
Bully Monsanto is trying to get Mexico to plant its  genetically modified corn, but Mexico is resisting.  Mexico's agriculture department banned Monsanto and other companies from planting any GM corn in an effort to preserve the pure and ancient varieties Mexico has been growing for hundreds of years.  But this is unlikely the last word on the matter, as Monsanto is standing firm and is won't give up until it gets its way.    Bullying elsewhere:  Monsanto and the other frankenfood bully duPont, via the American Soybean Association, are in the process of bullying the EU over their restrictions on GM soybeans.  They will not be satisfied until they own all major crops the world over.

Cat Fight
2006-12-02 20:06:02
How fucking embarrassing.  They're not even in office yet and they're already fighting and carrying on. We were worried about Pelosi, then she seemed to rise to the occasion.  But we're worrying again.  First, she misjudged the Murtha thing, and now there is a cat fight with Jane Harman.  Apparently because of some petty personal shit, Pelosi wants to make sure Harman does not ascend to chairwoman of the House Intelligence Committee, which she would as the ranking Democrat on the committee.  Foreign policy experts are begging Pelosi to change her mind, as Harman has excellent credentials and a proven track record as a centrist.  But Pelosi is being stubborn. Get ready for more drama, this is only the beginning.

Are Dems Ready to Win?
2006-11-07 01:42:01
Pre-Election Check ListDid you remember to Keep your party leaders from staying stupid thing? Showcase your most popular party  members, especially towards the end of the campaign? Display confidence, yet not hubris? Develop a media strategy to counter the pre-announced release of last minute news? Remind voters that with six years of a president and congress from the opposition party that voters can blame their dissatisfaction on that group alone? Counter the tag-lines that you know will be lobbed at you? Acknowledge that voters want to know what you will do differently, and why they should trust you with their vote? Work overtime at consolidating your early leads? Capitalize on scandals related to your opponents? Find your balls? For the Democrats, the answers to all of these is No.   Which begs the question if they are ready to win, or even deserve to. 1.  No organization can stop its members from speaking or controlling what they say.  Yet it...

More Election Misery
2006-11-01 07:03:01
Daniel Schulman writes in Mother Jones about a Republic push-pollster, and the strategies they employ.   No wonder Republicans win elections. With fear growing over another stolen election, TruthOut has an article on what we can do to prevent it.  Useful links for reporting voter fraud and other election irregularities. Mainstream press is reporting Ford behind Corker in Tennessee, a key state.  The Blue State is reporting that internal polls showing Ford is still in the lead.   A key strategy of the press is to present candidates of choice as leading in polls (by selectively choosing which polls to publicize), knowing that people tend to rally around a "winner."  They can influence the outcome of a close race that way.   All Evolve calls the polling in Tennessee into question as well, raising some alarming questions.
