Cynthia McKinney update
2007-10-09 18:03:00 First of all, here's a website you should take a look at. RunCynthia Run.comSecondly, Wes Rolley of California has posted some important details of Rep. McKinney's visit to CA and her apparent plan to run as a Green for Prez. Those details are at Green Commons. The bottom line seems to be that she has plans to relocate to CA and has her Green Party registration in hand.I am certain that Democrats will be falling all over each other trying to find ways to convince her to "behave" and "be responsible", but somehow I believe she understands that it is our nation's current batch of leaders who are misbehaving and being irresponsible. The national debt alone is cause enough to toss almost the entire crew onto the "ash heap of history".Let's get it started! Indiana Green Kathleen Petitjean runs on Human Rights platform
2007-10-09 14:57:00 Why would she do that? A city with a human rights policy? What the...Well, that might be the expected reaction from a Democrat or Republican, but for we Green s it makes sense. In this particular case, the city has a human rights ordinance, and the incumbent did not want to expand it to cover the GLBT community...so Petitjean said "enough is enough" and took her self out and filed to run against a spineless Democrat. Since the proposed change failed by a 4 to 5 vote, after she gets elected it will pass by the same margin..I hope! More About: Indiana , Human , Rights , Human Rights
McKinney...almost......
2007-10-08 15:49:00 It's torture, but at least we have a tiny bit of new info.Rep. McKinney has registered as a Green in California, which explains why I heard she had registered Green when there is no state certified Green Party in GA.This is GREAT news.According to an article at News Blaze, McKinney will make an announcement this week.*Does a brief Snoopy dance, and logs out*

Fog City Journal says McKinney is running
2007-10-07 03:44:00 I'll be honest here, I am confused as hell. Why send a message to the national party saying that you are not interested, and then appear to be interested? Of course, I have never operated at Rep. McKinney's level, so I am 100% certain that I can't understand all the ins and outs of her decision making process.So...here's what seems to be the latest. She's running. Maybe. In the article, the Fog City Journal reports that McKinney refused to deny or confirm that she has changed her registration to Green. I'm not sure how that could be since there is no state recognized Green Party in GA I believe, and she changed her registration to "declined to state" or something similar from democrat recently. At any rate, I am excited at the prospect of her running, and have written her to ask her to run. I hope she does so, and I hope she announces soon so we can begin to use her skills to build the party in hopes of creating a better future for us all. More About: Running
Winona LaDuke honored
2007-10-07 03:37:00 When my daughters heard Ralph Nader speak at a super-rally (we had it on a CD) they were both impressed. When they heard Winona LaDuke speak, they were transfixed. Her message and style were perfect for reaching my girls, and I was so proud of us for nominating her. I concider it a tragedy that she has not helped lead the Green Party after her Veep runs.LaDuke is being inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame. There is an article about her induction at WKBT and another at the The Star Tribune.
Green Party co-chair and candidate speaks out
2007-10-05 05:36:00 Some states are run lock-stock-and-barrel by one or the other corporate parties. One of these, I gather, is New Jersey.I'll say that some of the most passionate Green s I have ever "met" were from NJ, including co-chair Liz Arone. She's running for a state legislative seat, and doing so flying the Green Party banner high. If you click on the link you can read all about her campaign ideas. Off again, on again?
2007-10-05 05:29:00 While I posted here and at Green Commons that Cynthia McKinney had rejected the proposal that she run for President as a Green based on what was at the site "AllThingsCynthiaMcKinney.org", today I found that she has apparently not moved entirely away from seeking the party's nod. This article says that she is still mulling the decision over, and is currently on a "California Greens to Draft McKinney" tour of that state.I sure would like to see us at least have the opportunity to grow that a run by a person of substantial note can give us. Personally, I am on a three year plan to seize control of my county and town government...then I'll support a Green for President and perhaps get an appointment, eh? Do you have to be a lawyer to be Attorney General? If you do, I'll just take a seat on the Supreme Court. Not only do you not have to be a lawyer, you don't even have to pretend to be fair! It's a LIFETIME appointment.
How many must die?
2007-10-04 15:06:00 Marco Tulio laid to rest. How many deaths will it take till we know that too many people have died? That's the question Bob Dylan asked in his 1962 song, "Blowin' in the Wind".And it's the question I'm asking you now -- to each and every person on this mailing list. Less than two weeks ago, a man you've never met or even heard of, who lived in a country you may know very little about, was gunned down by masked criminals while leaving his house to go to work.Murders happen every day. Why single this one out?The man killed was Marco Tulio Ramírez Portela. He was in charge of sports and culture for the banana workers union in Guatemala. This is the union that organizes Del Monte workers. The bananas you eat may have been picked by members of his union.Marco Tulio's murder on 23 September was part of a pattern of rising anti-union violence in Guatemala. And as we've pointed out before, 144 trade union activists were killed in 2006. That's a big increase over the previous year...

NC Green writes about Jared Ball
2007-10-04 12:23:00 He's coming to Charlotte tomorrow, but other than a few posts to the Charlotte Area Green Party by Gray Newman, formerly of the Cobb camp and a resigned member of the national steering committee, I have heard not a peep about the visit. The Charlotte Greens could certainly use some help in reaching out to the local Black and Latino community, but apparently won't get it from Dr. Ball , at least not on this trip.Read the article about Dr. Ball here. Christian Conservatives may support 3rd party effort
2007-10-04 12:15:00 Of course, the republicans are throwing all the same crap at them that Democrats throw at us. "They will ruin the republican's chances. They need to forget getting their demands met and support the lesser evil to avoid a democratic victory."We've heard such claptrap before, and I seriously doubt than any of my readers are going to fall for that "logic". Like advocates for social justice, non-violence, grassroots democracy and ecological wisdom have the Green Party to turn to, the Christian Conservatives have the Constitution Party at the ready.More about the rumbling on the Christian Right can be found in an article at the Daily TarHeel. St Louis Greens force audit of city books
2007-09-29 06:46:00 Using a system that required gathering signatures from voters, the St. Louis Greens were able to force the state government to audit the city's books. The St Louis greens have a particular program they want looked at, and the state has made it clear that they will do whatever sort of audit they darn well want to do.I think this is a feather in our caps, and especially for those Greens in St Louis! Reading candidate has a plan!
2007-09-29 06:25:00 But, it's not a Green from Reading PA, but from Reading England. The plan is for him and his girlfriend to live for a year and generate less than one roll-out trash can filled with debris. The rest will be recycled, never bought in the first place, re-used or composted.A newspaper is covering the effort, including allowing him to do a monthly column for the year. How much good could you do with such a campaign?Learn more by visiting their website. More About: Plan , Candidate

Greens address Jena Six
2007-09-23 22:58:00 In case you have not followed the story closely (and I have not), the Jena Six are six young black men in Jena, LA. They are accused of beating a classmate severely. Of course, there is more to the story. As I understand it, a school assembly was held at the school, and a student asked if he could sit under a particular tree on the campus. He was told that he could.Thereafter, several black students did sit under that tree, since cut down, and some other students hung nooses from it after school.Over the next few days words were exchanged between students of both skin tones, and at least one white student was accused of wrong doing. The consequences were apparently not much. This seems to me to be the critical issue. No one, no matter how offended by someone else's actions, is entitled to beat another. In this particular case, apparently, it was a six-on-one case, and while the student did receive what looks like a serious whupping, he will suffer no long term consequences. No... Green take on high stakes testing
2007-09-23 20:55:00 Imagine for a moment that you are back in high school. Now imagine that to get the diploma you had worked towards for twelve long years was not going to be yours unless you pass a single test. This is called "high stakes testing" and it is the cause of much agonizing and a lot of Tums purchases.Back when my wife and I were students at the University of Georgia back in the late 70s we heard Ralph Nader as he spoke to the student body. even back then he was speaking out against these sorts of tests. Lauren Gilchrist writes about the situation faced by students today, and no surprise, things are as screwed up as when I was in a classroom. The article is about high stakes testing in Canada, but the same sort of facts are at play in the US, including the Green Party's opposition to this system, which takes the student, parent and teacher out of the formula, and substitutes their wisdom with the opinions and ideas of a far-off corporation and their henchmen (academics) who help them c... Water, water everywhere
More articles from this author:2007-09-23 20:38:00 In the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", the poet writes about how water surrounds his craft, but none can be drunk as it is saltwater, and unfit for drinking.Today we face a similar, but less immediate, problem. From California to here in South Carolina, water is becoming more of a scarce resource.Being a Green does not make the "laws of economics" go away. If the supply of water drops, the price will rise. This is what I call a "natural law", that is, like gravity, the law of supply and demand does not respond to legislation. So...if we accept the idea that water is becoming more scarce, and if we accept the concept that the result is a hike in prices for water, what are we to do to assure that water is affordable? The answer is in the law. Supply is the response to the increase in demand unless we are willing to accept a higher price. The question is, how can we increase the supply without doing damage to the environment, and how can we do this at a cost that is affordable to soci...
