Are Highly-Educated Women 'Hillary-Haters'?
2007-07-30 11:19:00
There was an interesting article in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, exploring how preconceptions about Mrs Clinton might hurt or boost her chances of winning the Democratic nomination. This article states something that has plagued Mrs Clinton from her early days in the media - she doesn't rate well among highly-educated women, although this doesn't seem to hurt her in actual elections.Like many other articles of this nature, the article then goes on to classify just about everyone who isn't for Mrs Clinton as a 'Hillary -hater'. I'm so tired of this.I am a highly-educated woman, happily married, and with a successful career. I don't support Mrs Clinton and will never vote for her for a variety of well-considered reasons that I am articulating through this blog. I find it interesting that the base of voters who are most like Mrs Clinton are the least likely to like her. To me, that's because we see her for who she is, as well as for who she could be but isn't. I don't want he...

In It To Win-Win
2007-07-27 09:04:00
I've been reading more frequently that 'people' don't like Mrs Clinton because she's a stong woman who likes to win.Hmm. I'm a strong woman who likes to win. Most of my female friends and colleagues are strong women who like to win. I don't really have a problem with this. The thing I don't like about Mrs Clinton is HOW she wins.If you know anything about Game Theory and the Prisoner's Dilemma, you'll know that when you're competing or negotiating with someone, there are four basic outcomes:1. You both take something away from the exchange that you want - the win-win.2. I take something away that I want, but you get nothing - I win, you lose.3. You take something away that you want, but I get nothing - you win, I lose.4. Neither of us gets anything - lose-lose.Great leaders strive for the win-win. I've had some fantastic male and female bosses and colleagues who have the art of the win-win down pat, and I work hard to be like these leaders.Mrs Clinton doesn't operate in ...
Hello Kettle, It's The Pot
2007-07-26 12:38:00
Following the YouTube debates, Mrs Clinton has gone on the offensive with Mr Obama, claiming that his approach to diplomacy is naive, irresponsible, and open for use as propaganda by foreign leaders.By doing this, does she think we will forget that this is what the Pentagon is saying about her? And not on something that Mrs Clinton might do as President, but that she has ACTUALLY done as a Senator.I'm going to have to go and read more about what the Republican candidates are up to, the Democrats are really depressing me...

For a transcript of the recent YouTube debate among Democratic candidates, click here.Thankfully, Mrs Clinton didn't have much to say, the other candidates seemed to get more air time.In her defense, I was a little disappointed that they chose to make comments about what she wore - makes you wonder if a Clinton Presidency in 2008 will be of more interest to Vogue than to The Economist?

Is She Dangerous?
2007-07-20 12:46:00
So, the Pentagon has issued a warning to Mrs Clinton, whose rhetoric and actions may be endangering the US military and our allies overseas. While I wouldn't discount that some of the Pentagon's motives may be tinged with politics, I'm also not surprised that they are concerned about Mrs Clinton. They are, after all, dealing with a Senator who endorsed military action - allegedly without fully reading the briefing papers before the vote. This same Senator, upon realising this vote was hurting her political ambitions, has washed her hands of any responsibility - placing all of the blame on the current President, who could not have taken military action to begin with had she, herself, and a majority of the Senate not endorsed this action. This is why the US has a system of checks and balances - so that no one person can just leap into something as serious as a war without approval from somewhere else in the system. With all of her supposed experience, why is it that Mrs Clinton doesn...

Running Mates
2007-07-18 14:14:00
I just read the most ridiculous article, suggesting that Mrs Clinton start grooming Obama as her running mate.Firstly, not a single vote has been cast in the primary election. "It ain't over 'till it's over", and I think it's laughable for Mrs Clinton's supporters to imply that this is a done deal. Do they think more people will vote for her if they simply announce Mrs Clinton as the winner now?Secondly, why would anyone want to be VP to Mrs Clinton?Mrs Clinton is not generous with the spotlight. How many people out there know that New York State has a SENIOR Senator in the form of Chuck Schumer, who has spent more than 30 years in elected office working for the people of New York? To top that off, how many of you know that the people of New York consistently rate Mr Schumer as a better Senator than Mrs Clinton? How do you think a running mate would fare in the campaign, and how much press do you think Mrs Clinton's VP might get while in office?A running mate would also have t...

Obama must be doing well - Mrs Clinton has pulled her not-so-secret campaign weapon out of the bag, and has her husband stumping for her already. People are attending her campaign events not to see the candidate but her husband. To this day, I don't understand the draw of her husband. Yes, the US economy was strong while he was President. However, that was partly because of the way economic cycles work and mostly because of the talents of Alan Greenspan. For Mrs Clinton to try to claim some of that success is insulting, particularly considering the poor state of the economy of upstate New York, where hundreds of thousands of people are moving out-of-state every year because of a lack of jobs. Can anyone tell me what Mrs Clinton has done to change this? Her husband is also, simply put, a despicable man who treats women like dirt. I was at dinner last week with some of my female friends, all of whom raved about the ex-President. It wasn't until one of them said she wouldn't let her d...

A Tale Of Two First Ladies
2007-07-13 13:56:00
In the 1990's two of the world's foremost democratic nations elected young, charismatic leaders, both of whom were married to strong career women (both lawyers) who were expected to change the face of what a First Lady looked like.In the UK, the First Lady kept her job, being called on to defend people and issues that did not always align to her husband's policies and politics. While her husband was in office, the couple had a baby. The First Lady returned to work shortly thereafter and her husband changed diapers while she was at work (and the nanny wasn't around). In a display of 'Everywoman' this First Lady was charged with and paid a fine on public transport for not having the correct ticket when she didn't have the right change to feed into the automated ticket machine on her way to a meeting in the early hours of the morning. In the US, the First Lady quit her job. After failing to perform at tasks delegated to her by her husband, she carried out work as an advocate for ...

"It's The Experience, Stupid"
2007-07-11 15:11:00
Mrs Clinton and some of the media outlets have been trying to convince us that she is the most experienced candidate running for President in 2008.While I would never argue that Mrs Clinton is an inexperienced politician, I have doubts about the quality and relevance of her experience towards a leadership position such as the President, particularly when compared to other candidates. Many cite her years as First Lady as providing an advantage. While I grant that this experience is unique to Mrs Clinton, I am not among those people who believe that if they watch and support their spouse in doing a job, they too are qualified to do that job. For instance, if your heart surgeon retired, would his or her spouse be the top candidate on your list when you needed open-heart-surgery? (I won't go into details about the First Lady's dismal performance with 'Hillarycare' - everyone is familiar with that, although it's unclear to me what Mrs Clinton learned from it and how she will apply th...

Authenticity Can't Be Faked
2007-07-10 14:04:00
Much ado has been made as to whether Hillary Clinton can be elected as President of the US in 2008. But, are we asking the right question? Shouldn't we be asking whether Mrs Clinton would make a good President instead? To me, the job of President is one of leadership. You hear the position described as 'Leader of the Free World', 'Leader of the Executive Branch', 'Leader of the Armed Forces'. Would Mrs Clinton make a good leader? I don't think so.One of the reasons why I don't think so is that leaders require specific skills and characteristics - skills can be learned, characteristics can't. Mrs Clinton lacks many of both, and in this post, I'm going to focus on one of the main characteristics - authenticity. We require leaders to be authentic because it's important for us to know who they are, where they've been, and where they're likely to go. Would you follow someone if you didn't have a basic understanding of this?We also require authenticity because without it ther...
