"All the King's horses..."
2008-01-30 17:10:00
As exit polls from the Florida Democratic primary and elsewhere continue to demonstrate, there is a significant and widening rift within the Democratic Party along racial, gender and class lines, as well as by age. Unfortunately for progressives, there are two other splits that will be longer-term problems going forward.

A Few Good (White) Men
2008-01-28 06:14:00
I'll begin by noting that if it is not true that Bill Clinton is a spurting cock, then there is no more truth to be known in the universe. (See this video for yet but another example of what the Wall Street Journal called "Obama's Clinton Education.")Far from being a gratuitous aside, this observation is central to the dilemma faced jointly by Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign and Democrats more generally. As it is, Democrats have several squares to circle (as discussed elsewhere) in their attempts to maintain party unity in the face of a Republican Party that is slowly coalescing around John McCain's candidacy; Bill Clinton's unnecessarily incendiary commentary only adds degrees of difficulty to the task. For now at least, many Democrats think they are beginning to see the light as to who might best unite party and country. Exit polling from South Carolina indicates that 55 percent of voters think that Sen. Barack Obama "would be most likely to unite the country if elected presi...

Clintonism R.I.P.
2008-01-08 23:15:00
Hillary Clinton's defeat in Iowa, with - if recent polling data is to be believed - another soon to come in New Hampshire (as even Sen. Hillary Clinton appears ready to acknowledge), is a pleasant non-surprise to those of us who looked upon the Clinton era with equal parts loathing and disgust. But Hillary's impending defeat in the Granite State portends more than the undoing of a carefully stage-crafted campaign. Surely, we are witnessing a sea change in the fortunes of America's (former) premier political couple.Matt Bai of the New York Times Magazine correctly divined the likelihood of Ms. Clinton being able to launch a viable run for the White House when he correlated her success with public perception of her husband's record as president. In his piece, Bai points out how the nascent split between Bill Clinton's triangulating centrism and the more confrontational tactics embraced by the netroots endangered Hillary's campaign almost from the start.Even before they knew for...

Hillary d' Little Rock [Digg]
2008-01-07 03:30:00
Today is Epiphany Sunday. So it's appropriate that Democrats seem to have had their own moment of clarity about the "inevitability" of Hillary Clinton's ascension to the White House. Read here to find out why.

Hillary d' Little Rock
2008-01-07 03:19:00
In the better part of American Christendom, today is Epiphany Sunday; I dutifully hustled my family to worship. For reasons about which I am still unclear, I felt particularly disengaged from the goings on during church today. (Perhaps it did not help that the preacher was speaking from the first chapter of the Book of Irrelevant Theology.)In any event, as the pastor's sermon wound down to its anticlimax, I noticed a rustling the pews on the periphery to my right. An elderly member of the congregation seemed to be in some urgent physical distress; he was eventually trundled out of the sanctuary and an ambulance was dispatched for him. My thoughts and prayers sped with him to the hospital, and reside with him presently. My own epiphany for today was that whatever "the church" is about, the least of it is what goes on under its imprimaturs. It is the interpersonal courtesies and intercessions of the faithful towards each other that justify the exercise of religious faith; surely it is...

I knew I saved this image for something. It nicely complements reporting from the Washington Post describing Hillary Clinton as the "scrappy underdog" after her defeat in last week's Iowa caucuses. All of Hillary's newfound scrappiness was on display during Saturday's debates. The L.A. Times also remarked on the Hillary's changing fortunes, noting that her opponent Barack Obama "who spent most of the debate in the position Clinton once occupied -- coolly above the fray -- responded evenly" to Clinton's debate histrionics. The times, they are a-changin'.More to come...http://mattersofmannerandtype.blog spot.com
