Fareed Zakaria NAILS John McCain on Foreign Policy
2008-05-02 16:56:00 Mccain Vs. Mccain He seems to think he can magically unite the two main strands in the foreign-policy establishment. He can't. Fareed Zakaria NEWSWEEK Apr 26, 2008 Amid the din of the dueling democrats, people seem to have forgotten about that other guy in the presidential raceyou know, John McCain. McCain is said to be benefiting from this politically because his rivals are tearing each other apart. In fact, few people are paying much attention to what the Republican nominee is saying, or subjecting it to any serious scrutiny. On March 26, McCain gave a speech on foreign policy in Los Angeles that was billed as his most comprehensive statement on the subject. It contained within it the most radical idea put forward by a major candidate for the presidency in 25 years. Yet almost no one noticed. In his speech McCain proposed that the United States expel Russia from the G8, the group of advanced industrial countries. Moscow was included in this body in the 1990s... high price of gas causes stabbing at the gas pump in
2008-04-18 05:08:00 In Athens,Tennesee like anywhere else tempers can flare when the high price of gas meets a major inconvenience, and is further fueled by alcohol. Police are holding David A. Lundsford of Sweetwater and Roger Gifford of Athens pending a court appearance Friday. The two friends were walking north on Congress Parkway to get gas for their car which had run out.Lundsford said that after they reached the pump, they began to argue over who should pay for it. Rather than utilizing something like the traditional "Rock, paper, scissors" to help decide, they argued and fought. Both ended up in jail with Lundsford sustaining minor stab wounds to the abdomen, inflicted with a pocket knife early Wednesday. Seppuku has been ruled out. A witness observed Lundsford punching Gifford. Both are charged with public intoxication. I still blame gas prices. Argument over paying for gas leadsto arrests More About: Price , High , Pump
Health Care for Dummies
2008-03-27 18:41:00 We do not have the best Health Care system in the world, we have the 28th best. The major failing with enacting a national single payer health care plan - which the majority of Americans want - is two fold. First that it's presentation is far too complicated for the short attention spans of the average American. Secondly the Republicans refuse to do anything about the problem other than handing it over to Wall Street. After all, they already have good coverage and don't give a rat's ass about your coverage - which is what makes them Republicans - it is the nature of the Beast. If Democrats can make the presentation simple enough to get the populace behind it, the GOP will have the choice of either accepting it and trying to make it as meaningless as they can, or getting voted out of office and having no say at all. So to make it easy Democrats have to knock this issue down into a few simple sound bites. National Health care should be modeled after Social Security which is cost e... RIP - Richard Widmark as Tommy Udo and the Wheelchair Lady - Video
2008-03-27 17:16:00 Richard Widmark was always one of my favorites because like James Cagney he could do both good guys and bad guys equally well. The Kiss of Death from 1947, his first movie, got him a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination as the giggling killer, Tommy Udo. This is the scene that made him famous. Huge Hooters Hold Down Dolly Parton's Tour
2008-03-27 04:52:00 Long famous for her super-sized hooters, big wigs, smile and voice, Dolly Parton quipped when receiving a songwriters award last year that she's been known for two things throughout her career. "I'm talking about my music and my lyrics."Parton, 62, announced Monday that she would postpone her upcoming North American tour after doctors told her to take it easy for six to eight weeks to rest her sore back. "Hey, you try wagging these puppies around a while and see if you don't have back problems," the sassy singer-songwriter said in a statement. The tour, was to begin on February 28 in Minneapolis, two days after the release of her first album of mainstream country music in 17 years titled "Backwoods Barbie". Dolly now plans to start the tour in April.Parton has been enjoying a renewed popularity since releasing the first of a trio of bluegrass-tinged albums in 1999. Two 93 Year Olds Caught in Manatee County, Florida Prostitution Sting - Ph
2008-03-26 18:11:00 "I haven't had that in years, Ninety-three is kind of old." Frank Milio explained that he was only flirting.Manatee County Prosecuters have gone ahead with indicting 93 year old Frank Milio for soliciting sex from a police officer pretending to be a prostitute. After the buxom woman gave Milos the eye, which he had not experienced in close to 50 years, he began flirting and offered her $20. About $3980 less than the going rate in New York, a sweat deal for a wrinkly old man with the prospect of sex with a beautiful young woman. Brings to mind the old adage that if something seems too good to be true it is. If Milio for some reason will not, or cannot offset his Social Security check to pay the few hundred dollar fine, he could get 6 months in the pokey which could very well be a life sentence for trying to get laid with a $20 bill."All I was going to do was talk, it wasn't for sex. Anthony Smith of Chicago Hides Gun in Oven and Bang Bang
2008-03-26 03:59:00 While the photo here may exaggerate a tad, I'm sure the chaos and terror which ensued Friday afternoon to three children at home must have seemed like destruction and noise on this scale. Two young boys were at home in their Back of the Yards neighborhood in Chicago on Friday afternoon. Their older sister was preparing a meal, and a parolee named Anthony Smith 24 was in the home. When the older sister heated the oven she had no reason to expect surprises. Suddenly she heard loud noises coming from the oven, followed by screams of her bleeding 4-year old brother who was shot in a leg. A 12 year-old boy was struck in the forehead by debris caused by the gunshots from the gun Smith wasn't allowed to have legally, and had decided to hide in the oven. He apparently forgot to share that information with the residents of the home, or perhaps saw no reason for concern when gun powder is heated to high temperatures. The younger boy is in stable condition in Corner Childrens Hospital, the 12... More About: Bang , Oven
Hillary Clinton's Long Defeat - David Brooks
2008-03-25 17:05:00 March 25, 2008 Op-Ed Columnist The Long Defeat By DAVID BROOKS Hillary Clinton may not realize it yet, but shes just endured one of the worst weeks of her campaign. First, Barack Obama weathered the Rev. Jeremiah Wright affair without serious damage to his nomination prospects. Obama still holds a tiny lead among Democrats nationally in the Gallup tracking poll, just as he did before this whole affair blew up. Second, Obamas lawyers successfully prevented re-votes in Florida and Michigan. That means it would be virtually impossible for Clinton to take a lead in either elected delegates or total primary votes. Third, as Noam Scheiber of The New Republic has reported, most superdelegates have accepted Nancy Pelosis judgment that the winner of the elected delegates should get the nomination. Instead of lining up behind Clinton, theyre drifting away. Her lead among them has shrunk by about 60 in the past month, according to Avi Zenilman of Politico.com. In short, Hillary Cl... An Obama Administration may bring the Right to Violence - PHILIP JENKINS
2008-03-24 20:06:00 While you may wonder how many James Earl Rays' there may be in America, down here in Texas I wonder how many are on my street. An unpopular sentence that should never be a deciding factor in either the Obama 's choice to run or a voters choice to pull a lever, but... If Obama becomes President of the United States there will be hell to pay, and it will be loud and violent. It is the Nature of the Beast. RJ Next terrorism threat may be of homegrown varietyRadical right could be stirred by election resultsBy PHILIP JENKINSHow will the next president deal with the terrorist crisis of 2010-11? No, not those terrorists. I mean the domestic extremists who, history suggests, are due for a resurgence.Forecasting a wave of political extremism might sound like apocalyptic prophecy, but it has a sound basis in American political history. In November, it is possible that a liberal Democratic administration will be elected to replace the long-established conservative Republican leadership. Su... More About: Violence , Administration
Houston Man, Kendall Dwayne Thomas Shoots School Bus
2008-02-09 19:33:00 HOUSTON -- A Spring Branch school district bus was shot up Thursday, police said. All because the bus driver refused to let a student aboard who was still eating her breakfast. Unfinished oatmeal leads to school bus shootingAfter the girl returned home to tell her parents, her 29 year old step father, Kendall Dwayne Thomas and the mother called the school bus dispatcher to say they were coming after the diver. In separate cars they tracked down the bus. After it dropped off its students, Thomas caught up with it and blocked it with his car. He then got out and shot at the driver missing him by a few feet. Thomas denies it saying he only threw a bottle of perfume at the bus. Fragrance: Bullethole #3.In a related story 10 Democratic US Senators joined 45 Republicans to sign a brief to the Supreme Court asking - for the first time in 70 years - to review and strike down the "State Militia" clause of the 2nd Amendment. 2008-02-09 18:01:00 P.J. O'Rourke as a special guest seems to have had one too many something or others, but he made a salient point in a few simple words. He said he makes lots of speeches to lots of Republican organizations and corporations and they are not concerned with abortion or guns or religion or war, they are just very wealthy people who only want to get very much wealthier. Ron Paul Goes Back to Texas to save his Congressional Seat
2008-02-09 17:03:00 election political humor In the presidential race and the congressional race, I need your support, as always. And I have plans to continue fighting for our ideas in politics and education that I will share with you when I can, for I will need you at my side. In the meantime, onward and upward! 2008-02-08 18:04:00 Presenting clips from Comedy Central of late has got a few screeching SCAB at Bill Maher , Jon Stewart , Stephen Colbert , Jay Leno and this blog. Maher, Leno, Colbert and Stewart going back on the air - no matter how persistent they promote the WGA on their shows - they have done the WGA poorly. But...SCAB is the wrong word. Colbert and Stewart - both members of the WGA are not writers for their shows. If you run a blog or a webiste and use YOUTUBE videos you are well aware of the text on your dead video saying it has been removed by request from VIACOM - which I have never experienced that from any other company but VIACOM. Republican Snidely Whiplash Votes Down YOUR Stimulus Rebate
More articles from this author:2008-02-07 18:49:00 When the Stimulus Package reached the Senate this week, Democratic Senators increased the package from $161 million to $196 million to cover the elderly, disabled, veterans, unemployed and a tax deduction on renewable energy companies. 41 Republican Senators voted against helping the elderly, the disabled, the veterans, the unemployed and renewable energy companies. The bill now is tabled because it lacks the 60 votes needed to override a Presidential veto. George W. Bush would of course vote against helping the elderly, the disabled, the veterans, the unemployed and renewable energy companies. Both Democratic Presidential contenders went to Washington to vote aye. John McCain did not make the trip. The politics are obvious. The Democrats - knowing full well what would happen - wanted to remind American voters the nature of the foul orthodoxy of the Republican party. The Republicans understood fully and could care less. Once again comes to mind that old American Indian story of t... More About: Rebate , Votes 1, 2 |
