Police Union Leader Sacked
2007-08-06 03:10:00 BELGRADE -- President of the Independent Poli ce Union (PSS) Veljko Mijailovi? has been dismissed from the Serbian police (MUP). In the wake of the decision to terminate his contract, Mijailovi? told reporters that the explanation offered by the MUP was ?absolutely untrue?.According to the explanation, Mijailovi? lost his job because of the statements he [had] made during a news conference on May 10, when he accused Interior Minister Dragan Jo?i? of "dictatorship," at the same time criticizing the MUP leadership. The disciplinary commission found that he used his position in the union to make unsubstantiated claims about the ministry, the minister, and senior MUP commanders. Mijailovi?, on the other hand, says he was merely relaying the PSS position and conclusions from the union presidency meeting held in the second half of April, when it was decided to go public with the criticism of the police leadership. Mijailovi? added one of the things cited as reason for his dismissal from... More About: Sacked , Lead

Tax Law Amendments: The Good and The Bad
2007-08-05 15:06:00 The National Assembly has recently passed amendments on the Law on Property Taxes, as well as the Law on the Value Added Tax (PDV). The changes regarding the Law on Property Taxes will most directly affect those who plan on buying their first apartment (i.e. young people). The tax has been reduced from 5% to 2.5% overall, whilst it's being waived for those who're buying for the first time. The law stipulates that the person buying the property will be able to purchase the first 40m2 of property tax-free. Fifteen square metres extra will also be tax-free with each additional tenant. For example, a young couple would be able to purchase a 55m2 apartment tax-free (40m2+15m2). A first-time owner with a wife and two kids would be able to buy an 85m2 apartment tax-free, etc. Additionally, the first-time buyers will be refunded the PDV, which stands at 8%. Also, the PDV for personal computers and peripherals has been slashed to 8%, formerly 18%. These measures, while helping certain... More About: Good , The Good , The Go , The G , Amen

"So, what is that which connects Serbian nationalists and Zionists?" asks Novi Horizonti. "Surely, the only common thread that connects those two non connectable categories is demonization of Muslim Bosniaks and Palestinians and their characterization as the world terrorists, so they could get world support for their evil political objectives," explains Novi Horizonti. A Very Concise Review of Political Developments in Serbia, 1904-2007 (1)
2007-08-01 17:12:00 The golden age of Serbia n democracy had lasted far too short a time for anyone to truly appreciate this achievement. Not until 1904 and the coronation of Peter I Karageorgevitch had Serbia witnessed a political system so liberal, so democratic and so vibrant. Peter I was Serbia's first Constitutional monarch and was very inclined towards solidifying democracy in the Kingdom. Serbia was one of the most democratic states in Europe at the time, and its Constitution far more liberal than many European constitutions. The absolute master of Serbian politics during this time (and stretching as far back as the 1880s) was Mr Nikola Pashitch, who started off as a social democrat, but would move on to head the conservative Radical Party and lead 25 governments in his career. Ten years of liberal democracy was all that Serbia was afforded. All this came crashing down in late August 1914. Following the war, the social democrats weren't looked upon too kindly. Nobody in Europe - or Serbia - wan... More About: Political , Review , Poli , Develop

An Overview: Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS)
2007-07-30 15:19:00 There are over 300 registered political parties in Serbia . Of these, less than 3% have a theoretical possibility of gaining seats in the Skupshtina (National Assembly) on their own. Currently, there are 22 political parties who have at least one MP (the Parliament has 250 seats) and there is one independent MP. Most of the 22 parties managed to gain representation through a coalition agreement with another party, or by simply fielding their candidates through a bigger party (i.e. these small party candidates appeared on a stronger party's electoral list).Following the collapse of the USSR, the ex-Communists became socialists or social democrats overnight. Serbia is no exception. The largest of these ex-Communist parties was the Socialist Party of Serbia (formerly the Communist Party of Serbia - a regional offshoot in charge of the Republic of Serbia since the only legal party in the former Yugoslavia was the Communist Party of Yugoslavia). The issue with the SPS was that it was le... More About: Cialis , Overview

Welcome!
2007-07-28 09:26:00 Dear Visitor,This is the first of hopefully many posts to come. We would like to welcome and thank You for taking the time to visit our blog and keep on top of all things labour in Serbia. Please note that we are not affiliated with any political party or organization in Serbia (or abroad), although we wouldn't say no to the Social Democratic Party if approached, given that it is the only party that appears to care about labour rights. After all, the point of this blog is to spread the word about labour rights and inform the world about the plight of Serbian workers and pensioners who have spent most of their lives working and building up the country only to be pushed aside and forgotten during the process of Serbia's transition. Serbia must become a better place to live, work, raise a family and enjoy the fruits of one's labour. We believe that this can be achieved if we sort out our priorities and join our efforts.Speaking of joining, we invite all of you to send us your labour ...
