2007-11-10 04:52:00
Following up on yesterday’s post, witha bit of help from this story on FNC: Clinton campaign spokesman Mo Elliethee admitted that the campaign had planted the question and said it would not happen again. What better way to avoid all those “gotcha” questions about whether HRC has a a stationary position on any of the real issues of the day then by planting your own questions in the audience about soft issues like global warming. ?However, Senator Clinton did not know which questioners she was calling on during the event. This is not standard policy and will not be repeated again.? Right. They went through the trouble of planting a question but did nothing to make sure the question actually got asked…. it was just a coincidence HRC happened to call on the person who had the planted question…. uh huh. “After her speech, Clinton accepted questions. But according to Grinnell College student Muriel Gallo-Chasanoff ?10, some of the questions from the ...

What?s the opposite of a bully?
2007-11-09 04:29:00
I’m not talking about the linguistic opposite.. like weakling or something like that. I’m talking about someone of strength who defends their ideas, defends the right of others to have their own ideas, and does not attempt to crush those who they perceive as inferior. On the other hand, a bully can look like a defender on the surface, crushing foes in the name of justice, while secretly (or not so secretly) doing so for personal gain, carefully choosing targets that are easily crushed and basking in the praise of adoring fans. Sure, they look strong while on the offensive, but strength is not measured by the fist alone; to truly be strong, you need to be able to take a punch and keep on fighting. On the other hand, givethe bully a good bop on the nose and watch the bravado melt into a pool of tears. Sometimes it doesn’t even take a bop on the nose, just someone with the temeritytolook the bully right in the eye and do the unthinkable… And so it was with ...

Yellowstone volcano?
2007-11-08 23:49:00
So… the ground at Yello wstone Park has been rising at a rate of about 3 inches per year for the last three years, leading experts to believe that magma is filling a crustal magma chamber: From AP: That is more than three times faster than ever observed since such measurements began in 1923, the researchers said. “Our best evidence is that the crustal magma chamber is filling with molten rock,” Smith said in a statement. “But we have no idea how long this process goes on before there either is an eruption or the inflow of molten rock stops and the caldera deflates again.” It’s not unusual for ancient volcano sites like Yellowstone and Long Valley, Calif., to rise and fall, according to the researchers. The Yellowstone volcanic field was produced by what the researchers described as a plume of hot and molten rock beginning at least 400 miles beneath Earth’s surface and rising to 30 miles underground, where it widens to about 300 miles across. ...

Quick Thought: Driver?s License for Illegal Immigrants
2007-11-07 04:04:00
Have been listening to some of the fascinating arguments in favor of NY providing driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. I think the one that I find to be the most obvious red herring is the “safety” issue. What we are being asked to believe is that, by allowing these folks to apply for a driver’s license, the roads will be safer because they will somehow magically become better drivers. Now, let’s suppose they fail their driving test and don’t get a license, will they suddenly become law abiding citizens and not drive without a license? And if they can drive well enough to get a license, aren’t they already competent enough to drive whether they have a license or not? The only benefit in the real world to people getting a driver’s license is that people who fail to obtain a license will theoretically not drive. Since these folks are already driving, passing a simple driving test will either be no problem or not keep them off th...

MSNBC going all in

Apparently emboldened by their impressive ratings as a left leaning cable network, MSNBC is thinking of giving Rosie her own show. As a result, the lunatic fringe will finally have a home of their own in primetime. Wonder if Bill Clinton will be a guest and wag his finger at her with a classic “How dare you…” when she starts channeling the far, far left blogs about 911 being an inside job. Side note: MSNBC doesn’t even crack the top 30. Fox News is 5th, CNN is 27th (which makes me wonder why all the doctors offices I go to insist on locking the TV on CNN… wouldn’t it make sense to select a channel folks actually want to watch), the FOOD Network is 26th!!! CNN and MSNBC can’t even attract as many viewers as the FOOD Network in primetime. Anyway, back to Rosie. Some reminder of what we can expect to see from a new Rosie show. With the freedom that MSNBC is likely to give her to make up anything she wants and present it as fact, it could g...

What were they thinking?
2007-11-06 05:03:00
Check out this article about twins from the Daily Mail, then come on back … I’ll wait. Amazing! Doctors were able to save a twin they assumed would die in the womb by cutting the placenta in half to isolate the healthier twin so that the death of the weaker twin would not result in the loss of both babies. Seems to me they may have stumbled upon a new procedure for allowing twins that are seemingly not co-equals in the womb a chance to survive. Mrs Jones said: “They thought it may be because the placenta had been divided. Inadvertently, it had evened out the distribution of nutrition between them, allowing Gabriel to survive.’ When Mrs Jones reached 31 weeks doctors carried out a caesarian to deliver the twins. Ieuan weighed 3lb 8oz and Gabriel 1lb 15oz. Both were kept in hospital, but since going home they have thrived. At seven months, Ieuan weighs 15lb and Gabriel 12lb 6oz. Mrs Jones said: “The boys are so healthy, they have huge appetites too. Ieua...

Painting the roses green?
2007-11-06 04:33:00
Sometimes I feel like I’ve stepped into a strange warped version of our world, kind of like Alice in her Adventures in Wonderland. The Queen says everyone must stop using so much fuel and energy while flyingin a private jet to spread the message (OK, Al Gore is not a queen… but work with me here). He then wins a Nobel Peace Prize for … um … what exactly did he win the award for again? Be right back… Here we go… From CNN: …the Nobel committee announced he would share the award with the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for their work to raise awareness about global warming. Oops… guess I should have known that. So much for raising awareness… If only the Nobel Peace Prize was actually still a credible award. 1994 Yasser Arafat, head of the PLO and a sponsor of terrorism, shared the award with Shimon Peres and Yitzak Rabin. 2001 the award went to the United Nations and its corrupt head, Kofi Annan. Once in a lifetime
2007-11-05 17:40:00
For those stargazers among us, here is something you don’t want to miss: From AP - A comet that has unexpectedly brightened in the past couple of weeks and now is visible to the naked eye is attracting professional and amateur interest. The comet is exploding and its coma, a cloud of gas and dust illuminated by the sun, has grown to be bigger than the planet Jupiter. The comet lacks the tail usually associated with such celestial bodies but can be seen in the northern sky, in the constellation Perseus, as a fuzzy spot of light about as bright as the stars in the Big Dipper. “This is truly a celestial surprise,” Lewis said. “Absolutely amazing.” A similar burst in 1892 led to the comet’s discovery by Edwin Holmes. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime event to witness, along the lines of when Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 smashed into Jupiter back in 1994,” Lewis said. Experts aren’t sure how long the comet’s show will last, but estimate i...

Why words matter

Did you miss this article when it was published in the WSJ? I did. Clicked a historical link over at Bottom Line Up Frontand found the link to the WSJ article which was written by a former high-ranking KGB agent. What he confirms s what many of us have long believed: our enemies use our mass media as a powerful conduit for their propaganda: The communist effort to generate hatred for the American president began soon after President Truman set up NATO and propelled the three Western occupation forces to unite their zones to form a new West German nation. We were tasked to take advantage of the reawakened patriotic feelings stirring in the European countries that had been subjugated by the Nazis, in order to shift their hatred for Hitler over into hatred for Truman–the leader of the new “occupation power.” Western Europe was still grateful to the U.S. for having restored its freedom, but it had strong leftist movements that we secretly financed. They were like put...

Some interesting reads for today

Spot on commentary at Wizbang on the brouhaha over the revelation that a Thompson advisor was convicted of selling pot 28 years ago… wonder if he inhaled? Miss Beth over at Wake Up America slams abortion supporters, but please be advised before you click on over to the link… graphic photos of partial birth abortions that will very likely sicken you if you are human… if not, perhaps there is room for you on the Dem ticket next November… here’s the link, but again, graphic image warning. But it’s all just hypothetical “intellectual” discussion that candidates use for political gain without ever facing the horrible reality of what is truly infanticide… no, even that is too sanitized… this is killing babies out of convenience, period. Let’s see a debate moderator have the guts to throw one of these images up on a large screen behind the candidates and ask them, one by one, if they support partial birth abortion… ...

Global warming, cooling, both or neither?
2007-11-05 06:38:00
The fact that the Earth has warmed and cooled throughout its history is a matter of record.  It is a fact, not open to debate, and really not something that will help us to predict if it will be warmer or cooler next year, 5 years from now, 50 years from now, etc…. What it does tell us is that, at some point in the future, the Earth will get warmer, or cooler, and then reverse the trend again in a cycle that has been going on for more than 800,000 years.  So, should we panic? Do we need to change how we live our lives to save us from global warming? That depends on if you believe that anything we are doing during our brief stay on this planet is actually accelerating the journey towards a warmer planet or perhaps delaying the next ice age. Seems to me there might be some benefit in delaying the next ice age, but then again, it seems unlikely a glacier will be flowing down my street within my lifetime. The article from 2000 that I read has some interesting points that got me...

Who ya gonna blame?

Submitted for your review: You are driving down a street, cell phone to your ear, reaching for another fry with a cup of Coke wedged between your thighs, when a young boy darts into the street after a ball. You swerve and hit a parked car… who’s to blame? You know the land is below sea level, on a fault line, along a coast prone to hurricanes, but you build a million dollar house anyway. Nature huffs and puffs and blows your house down. Who should pay? The area you live in is prone to major fires but all you can do is ensure you have a good evacuation plan because the state has decided that brush thinning, removal of trees within feet of your house or even dead trees in some instances are all prohibited due to environmental concerns. A fire is started by an arsonist, another by downed power lines, another by lightning, and yet another by a child playing with matches. Who do you blame? Who should pay? Besides a political witch hunt, what is the goal here? What critical national need are they filling? What major crises are they solving? Assuming Gonzales were forced to resign, how will that make life better for you and me? Who really cares why they were fired when they can be fired without a reason anyway.. just as has happened in every other administration prior to this one? Global warming? Bah… Disappearing bee colonies is the real threat
2007-08-03 21:01:00
I was sitting outside for a bit today and I noticed we seem to have a pretty good size colony of honey bees living in a little evergreen tree right next to our house. Now, I’m not usually too worried about bees, especially honey bees which tend to be relatively docile if you don’t bother them, but having scores of bees flying in and out of a nest right next to our patio furniture does pose some problems. In addition, left undisturbed, this colony will continue to grow and could become a major problem. Remembering that we have a potential crises in this country because of a declining bee population, instead of grabbing a can of wasp & bee spray, I began surfing the web for referrals to someone who could relocate this colony; what I found, for the most part, was exterminators. A few years ago, I’d have just killed the colony myself; I would have felt bad about it, but I would have done what I felt I needed to do. But now, that just doesn’t seem right. So&...

How to “negotiate” with terrorists
2007-08-01 18:51:00
Just a thought….  If terrorists hold innocent people hostage and demand the release of other terrorists, threaten to kill these hostages if their demands are not met, and then actually kill some of these people, as is the case with the Korean Christian volunteers held by the Taliban, I would make it clear to these thugs that for every hostage killed, one or two or ten or even 100 of their buddies held in prison would be executed.  Unfair? I suppose it is. Barbaric? Yeah, that too. But as long as there is a perceived value in taking hostages and killing innocent people, terrorists will continue to take hostages and kill innocent people. They are relying on us placing a greater value on the immediate threat to innocent lives than the long term impact of giving in to their demands. Taking it a step further, to ensure everyone has a vested interest in ensuring terrorist activity does not visit our shores again, I would let it be known that we hold countries like Iran directly re...
