Obama would keep troops in Iraq to fight al Qaeda!
2008-02-28 00:40:00
News Flash: Obama would keep troops in Iraq … although he doesn’t realize it just yet.  Here’s my thinking on this: From Reuters: Obama said during the debate with Clinton that once he withdrew U.S. troops from Iraq, if al Qaeda were to form a base there, “then we will have to act in a way that secures the American homeland and our interests abroad.” “I have some news,” McCain said. “Al Qaeda is in Iraq. It’s called Al Qaeda in Iraq. My friends, if we left, they wouldn’t be establishing a base, they’d be taking a country and I’m not going to allow that to happen.” …  Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell, who told U.S. lawmakers Wednesday that Al Qaeda in Iraq had suffered major setbacks last year and although still “capable of mounting lethal attacks,” the group had suffered hundreds of members killed or captured. <snip> “I have some news for John McCain, and tha...

President Obama?
2008-02-14 15:21:00
Who could have predicted one year ago that Barack Obama would be the front runner for president? Oh wait…  here’s someone: From Thinkin’bout Stuff 2/12/2007: … But Barack Obama is different. This man has a legitimate chance to win his party?s nomination over a somewhat weak field of candidates currently led by another candidate with questionable credentials for the job, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Why? OK, I admit it, I like the guy. I don?t agree with many of his positions, but he definitely appears to have the charisma to attract followers and presents logical arguments for his positions; but why does that qualify him to be president?… … But what makes Barack Obama a legitimate contender for the Democrat nomination for president? That?s right, you know it and I know it, it?s because he?s ? a celebrity. (You thought I was going to say ?African-American? didn?t you?) You see, we like celebrities in this country; heck, some of us worship them. And yes,...

Vast Winged Conspiracies
2008-02-09 07:34:00
Could it be the Clintons are now the target of both a vast right wing conspiracy AND a vast left wing conspiracy? First none of the Dems have the yarbles to debate on Fox, they might ask hard questions don’t you know… Then HRC whined about tough questions and “gotcha” moments from Tim Russert during a debate in November.  Now David Shuster of MSNBC said something about Chelsea Clinton that was clearly out of line, but is this the response we expect from someone who wants to be president?: From MSNBC/AP - In a conference call with reporters, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson on Friday excoriated MSNBC’s Shuster and called the comment “beneath contempt” and disgusting. And he said it could threaten Clinton’s participation in a debate later this month on MSNBC and in future debates on the network. “I, at this point, can’t envision a scenario where we would continue to engage in debates on that network,” Wol...

Wow!  What a temptation: AP  2/5/2008 - …  The process aims to create healthy embryos for couples to avoid passing on genes carrying diseases. The genes being replaced are the mitochondria, a cell’s energy source, which are contained outside the nucleus in a normal female egg. Mistakes in the mitochondria’s genetic code can result in serious diseases like muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, strokes and mental retardation. Imagine… the potential to wipe out genetic disorders. This would be to our generation what vaccines and antibiotics were to prior generations. There it is… right there… take it… The temptation is incredible; maybe it really is the right thing to do.  But the method just doesn’t seem right: British scientists say they have created human embryos containing DNA from two women and a man in a procedure that researchers hope might be used one day to produce embryos free of inherited diseases. Though the preliminary research has r...

What a great weekend
2008-02-05 18:04:00
And all it took was a great Super Bowl capped by a great finish … at least for those of us who are Giants fans. Know what I enjoyed almost as much? Watching 4 hours of pre-game shows on Monday (after the game of course) and laughing at all the experts who essentially were ready to crown the Pats champs before the kick-off. I know my view was filtered through Giants colored glasses, but minutes after the NFC Championship, I had already gone on record that the Giants would win 21-17… not too shabby Too bad I didn’t place a bet on that to back up my confidence in my prognostication skill… Even after the Pats took the lead with just over 2 minutes to go in the game, I told my wife this was exactly where any team would hope to be in a game like this: ball in hand, 3 time outs left, more than 2 minutes to go, down by 4 (not 3) so the goal is clear… touchdown wins it, anything less and you go home a loser.  What got me nervous was leaving 35 seconds on the c...

Just think?in
2008-01-30 04:05:00
Our smoke alarm went off tonight… no worries.. just burning food. But it raised an important question for me…  since the alarm went off.. how do I get it to stop? I can’t turn it off, because “going off” is what made it start making noise in the first place. Turning the alarm on doesn’t seem like the right thing to do either.  So if turning it on and turning it off won’t shut it up, what to do?  I stumbled upon the answer quite accidentally…  After trying to think what the right answer was for about an hour, dinner now over, the oven now off… the alarm stopped making noise and is now in whatever state it is in before it goes off again.

Dems Suppress Florida Vote? Again!
2008-01-30 03:49:00
Amazing…   after years and years of claiming Republicans are suppressing the vote, Democrats have decided to punish Florida for moving their primary by not allowing their delegates to be seated nor their votes counted at the Democrat convention. That’s over 1,000,000 US citizens, residents of the great state of Florida, who will not have their votes counted in this election because the Democrats have deemed them unworthy. And the really sad thing for the Dems is they can find no way to blame the Republicans. Interesting this isn’t bigger news.  Oh sure, stop a few illegal aliens from voting and you’re a racist.  Stop felons? How dare you withhold the right to vote from these poor misunderstood criminals. Require photo ID to prevent voter fraud and you are clearly trying to suppress the vote. But throw away over one million votes… well, hell… serves them right for voting on a day not approved by the Democrat Party. Never fear good people of Florida...

Is that really the best we can do?
2008-01-29 19:18:00
There are more than 150,000,000 Americans old enough to run for President of the United States.  Do we really believe that our generation has so little to offer that, from among those 150 million people, the best candidates are either named Bush or Clinton . If HRC is elected president and somehow manages to get re-elected to a second term, the President of the United States for more than a generation (28 straight years) will either have been a Bush or a Clinton…  I guess it’s conceivable Jeb Bush could keep the seat warm until Chelsea Clinton is ready.  Then again, at the end of this hypothetical two terms for HRC, Chelsea will be old enough to run for president and the Clintons could score the first presidential hat trick. Come on people… 150,000,000 of us to choose from, no need to limit ourselves like this.  If we’re not careful, this could turn into a rotating monarchy instead of a democracy.

Clearly I have not been keeping up with writing, but at least I have been thinkin’…. If work and life allow the time, I will get back to writing what I’m thinkin’ in a more verbose fashion, but for now, postings will likely be somewhat random and somewhat brief. As far as the presidential race…  haven’t figured out who I like yet, but definitely know who I don’t like.  As an independent, I don’t have much say until the general election, so for me this period of time is one of observation and waiting. Will try to check in as frequently as I can, but for now, I leave you with a random thought: “Some are only happy being sad, but I find I’m happier being happy”

Operation Happy Note
2007-11-22 17:44:00
I’ve been thinking about a lot of stuff lately, just haven’t had the time to write about stuff.  But here it is Thanksgiving and I, like most of us, am about to sit down to a wonderful fest with family to give thanks for everything the good Lord has provided and I can’t help but think about those less fortunate then I.  Foremost in my thoughts are the men and women serving our country around the world, far away from friends and family. We are grateful for their service and pray for their safety, but we can do more.  I just read, in Reader’s Digest, about a small organization called Operation Happy Note which is dedicated to bringing a bit of home to these brave men and women through the magic of music. The site, linked above, has photos and emails from service men and women who have received instruments from this organization.. a few examples: Barb and Steve I want to thank you very much for the guitar. Words cannot express the gratitude that I have for you a...
Waterboarding
2007-11-14 04:56:00
I had read, with some skepticism, Malcolm Nance’s assertion that waterboarding is torture: I have personally led, witnessed and supervised waterboarding of hundreds of people. It has been reported that both the Army and Navy SERE school’s interrogation manuals were used to form the interrogation techniques employed by the Army and the CIA for its terror suspects. What is less frequently reported is that our training was designed to show how an evil totalitarian enemy would use torture at the slightest whim. Having been subjected to this technique, I can say: It is risky but not entirely dangerous when applied in training for a very short period. However, when performed on an unsuspecting prisoner, waterboarding is a torture technique - without a doubt. There is no way to sugarcoat it. In the media, waterboarding is called “simulated drowning,” but that’s a misnomer. It does not simulate drowning, as the lungs are actually filling with water. There is no...

The “plant” spoke on CNN and insisted a senior Clinton campaign staffer gave her the question to ask and she wonders, as have many of us, how HRC knew to call on her if HRC didn’t know who had the right question: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Fr1dm2Qdl s Yet on Fox News, we hear the good senator insist that she was not aware of the plant and that no one in her campaign approves of the planting of questions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLVg_2D7Dg o But I thought they already admitted that the campaign planted the question.  Then again, she can still change her answer three more times and not be over the limit.  Others also still watering the plant story: Gina Cobb thinks HRC is looking for training wheels or a baby buggy presidency, Don Surber, The Strata-Sphere, Wake Up America, and a good laugh at Morning Coffee, Captain’s Quarters suggests that HRC’s team need to stop digging… the hole just keeps gettng deeper

Undetected Chinese sub surfaces near US Carrier?
2007-11-13 22:45:00
Folks… this means a potentially hostile submarine surfaced within striking range of one of our carriers and we had no clue it was there.: From UPI:- Senior NATO officials said that since the Chinese vessel surfaced in the middle of the recent military exercise, U.S. Navy officials have been shocked by the advanced technology used by their Chinese counterparts, The Daily Mail said Saturday. One official said that based on the ease at which the submarine avoided 12 U.S. warships to surface near a 1,000-foot carrier, Navy officials are reconsidering the potential dangers posed by Chinese subs. Appears we are once again reaping some of the bountiful harvest of the Clinton administration (bold highlights added by me): From Seth Cropsey, Safeguarding Defense Technology, Enabling Commerce, American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research - In 1994, China sold Pakistan parts of a missile with a payload of at least 1,100 pounds and minimum range of 185 miles, in violation of t...

Interesting… HRC has denied knowing anything about planted questions and will not tolerate that kind of behavior. Dem strategist Bob Beckel says he has been involved in four presidential campaigns, everyone plants questions, and this is no surprise… except apparently to HRC?  So, which is it…. this is no big deal and everyone knows about it and does it, or this is unacceptable and an isolated incident that HRC knew nothing about?  The root of either argument (everyone does it…  I didn’t do it…) can be traced all the way back to Kindergarten. Personally I prefer our president to be a grown-up. Take real questions like an adult and tell us what you really believe or what your real position is on the topic.  If we agree, we’ll vote for you; if not, we won’t. And if you lose the election, be a big boy or girl and get over it. Time to sacrifice a “rogue” staffer yet?
