So Close to Hearing Bill Clinton
2008-04-01 20:52:00
I'm currently staying near Bend, Oregon. If you don't know where that is, basically think 'small town right smack dab in the middle of the state'. Yesterday, Bill Clinton came to Bend and spoke in the gym at Bend High School. I tried to go to the speech, but couldn't because a few thousand too many people showed up.I think that is pretty cool.Bill Clinton was scheduled to speak at 5:00pm. We got there at about 4:15pm but didn't get in because the line looked like this:I didn't think for one second that we would encounter this many people when we were figuring how much time we'd need to get there- and when you think about it, that's pretty sad. I didn't think that enough people, in a city that has 77,780 of them, would go to see the former President of the United States of America whose wife is trying to claim the office of the most powerful, effective, and disastrous President in US history. I didn't think the interest would warrant more people than could fit in a high sc...

Iraq War 5 Year Anniversary... Whatever
2008-03-19 09:36:00
About a month ago I promised to write a post about the Iraq War on March 19th because it is the 5 year anniversary of that tragic day when we all sat in front of our televisions, watching the greenish night-vision images of the streets of Baghdad, waiting for the military we all finance to start dropping bombs on people who never did a thing to hurt us. I signed up for this blogswarm out of a sense of obligation, because my country started a war 5 long years ago. I have to say something.Right? But the closer this day came, as I tried to think of a powerful message to send out into the blogosphere, the more I realized I'm faking it. The anger, the passion, the outrage, the frustration. It's all still there, but there's nothing else to say about it. It's the same old story that's been told now for 5 years straight. Hundreds more Americans have died. Countless more Iraqis have died (because we don't bother to count them). The private contractor to troop ratio has swung more toward...

The Future of Little Country Lost
2008-03-12 23:53:00
My few regular readers have probably noticed that I've kind of dropped off the radar this month. It's something that is giving me constant anxiety, so even though I was planning to sit on this information for a while longer, I think I owe you guys an explanation. Here it goes:In the beginning of February, some of you may remember that I was struggling to get posts up because I was having a garage sale. What I didn't tell you was that my boyfriend and I sold almost everything we own. The next week, because we had no furniture, kitchen supplies, or televisions left, I found someone else to take over the lease on our apartment and moved into my father's spare bedroom. The reason we did all that is because we are taking our savings, selling our cars, and getting out of the country. The first stop will be Europe. We take off April 16th.We're doing this for a few reasons. First of all, we're both 25 years old (we both turn 26 in the next month) and we want to see the world. Since we ...

It's the Dollar, Stupid!
2008-03-06 19:07:00
On Tuesday, March 4th's Thom Hartmann program on Air America Radio, there was another moment of sanity that I would like to share with you guys. If you'll remember, on Tuesday, just about everyone was talking about the mini-Super Tuesday primary (naturally!) and the campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama (especially the 3am phone call ad. It was quite the twist in the storyline!). Thom Hartmann spent the first two minutes of the show expressing concern that one campaign has gone negative (and he actually made an interesting point, although I don't have the time to transcribe it. You can listen to that specific show for $2 at Air America's website - although the first hour was really the only 'worth the money' part of the show that day, in my opinion. And no- I'm not getting paid to say this.)But then he said this...(To let you know, I've changed the language a bit just to make it easier to understand. People speak a lot differently than they write, and do strange thi...

Naomi Wolf's Choice for President
2008-03-03 04:25:00
During January and February, I wrote a series titled the 10 Steps Towards Closing a Society. I wrote the posts, but the ideas behind it were not my own. It was based on the work of Naomi Wolf, specifically an article she wrote for The Guardian called Fascist America, in 10 Easy Steps.Naomi Wolf has written a piece for The Huffington Post that I think anyone that read my series might be interested in, especially considering that the Texas/Ohio primaries on Tuesday may very well determine the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. Some of the links in the following text are from Naomi Wolf's original post. I have also added a couple that seem relevant.Naomi Wolf: Why Barack Obama Got My Vote I just flew back from Australia, where I was speaking about the erosions of our civil liberties. Believe me, the rest of the world is agog at our inaction as what makes us Americans is being set aflame; and they are more scared of what an unsheathed US could do to the rest of t...

Kurt Vonnegut - Cold Turkey
2008-02-28 20:37:00
I apologize for not posting more this week. I've been a little strapped for cash and have had to pick up a part time job, so it's taking me longer to do research. This is a lazy post, I'm aware, but while I work on my next post (which will be a summary of the Don Siegelman situation), I thought you guys might enjoy this article that I found which was published in In These Times in May 2004 by the late Kurt Vonnegut .It's a much needed affirmation that we are not the ones who are insane. Many years ago, I was so innocent I still considered it possible that we could become. the humane and reasonable America so many members of my generation used to dream of. We dreamed of such an America during the Great Depression, when there were no jobs. And then we fought and often died for that dream during the Second World War, when there was no peace. But I know now that there is not a chance in hell of America’s becoming humane and reasonable. Because power corrupts us, and absolute power ...

The Truth About FISA & Telecom Immunity
2008-02-26 09:00:00
With the state of today’s media, I think it’s important to circulate the few bits of cold, hard truth that are available. One such example of a straightforward presentation of the facts was the explanation of the FISA controversy given by Air America radio show host Randi Rhodes on Valentine’s Day. (I have a subscription to Air America Premium, which allows me to listen to their broadcasts commercial free on my IPod, which is something I highly recommend for anyone who is looking for a source of news that doesn’t involve staring at a computer screen.) The following is a portion of Randi Rhodes’ February 14th show which will explain the entire FISA/telecom immunity situation in a way that will make perfect sense to anyone that is currently confused. To put the following in context, this show was broadcast the day before the Protect America Act revision to FISA expired. On the morning in question, Randi started her show by playing a clip of our President greeting the country ...

Blackout of Siegelman 60 Minutes Segment in Alabama
2008-02-25 07:27:00
While the vast majority of Americans were watching the Academy Awards (for movies none of us saw) tonight on ABC, CBS aired a long-overdue story about the prosecution of Don Siegelman on 60 Minutes . Don Siegelman is the former Democratic governor of Alabama who is currently serving 7 years in prison for a crime he very well might not have committed. It appears that he was most likely set up by the same Republicans who politicized the United States Justice Department - Karl Rove and his political goons. Here's the segment from 60 Minutes for those of you that missed it (like myself - I'll admit it. I'm a shameless celebra-whore).The people who were probably most interested in this story were the people that voted to make Don Siegelman their governor - the people of Alabama. However, this segment was reportedly not available for many of them to see. According to Larisa Alexandrovna, "during the 60 Minutes broadcast and ONLY during the Don Siegelman portion -- the screen went black ...

Live *Commenting the Debate Tonight
2008-02-22 01:33:00
Since I'm going to watch this sure-to-be-fluff Democratic debate tonight on CNN, I figured I may as well do my first live-blog. I'll be doing it in the form of comments on this post so that anyone else who would like to may join me (although I'm completely aware I may end up just talking to myself).I'm turning on my television at 8pm EST/ 5pm PST exactly (I can't handle pundits). Hope to see some of you then!* I'm not really live-blogging, I guess. We'll call it live commenting for now.

Bush's Warning: The State of the Union
2008-02-21 01:59:00
While I was writing the series 10 Steps Towards Closing a Society, President Bush gave his annual State of the Union Address. In the days following the speech, the general consensus was that the speech was nothing more than "Bush's Greatest Hits". I didn't find this to be true mainly because of one important "applause line":This statement was ignored by, well, just about everybody outside of Canada. However, the North American Summit that will take place in our broken New Orleans on April 21-22, 2008 should not be ignored. Here's why.Although President Bush speaks about this summit as if it is a routine meeting that occurs every year, this couldn't be further from the truth. The first such meeting between the leaders of the United States, Canada, and Mexico took place less than three years ago in March 2005 in Waco, Texas. At the end of the meeting, during a press conference, President Bush, then Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, and then Mexican President Vicente Fox announc...

I'm Back!
2008-02-19 20:21:00
I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm sorry for being unavailable for the past few days. I spent all of last week preparing to move, moved on Friday, and took a last minute trip to Las Vegas on Saturday morning (one of the perks of living in Los Angeles).I'm now back and sick as a dog!By the way, I would like to report a Paris and Nikki Hilton sighting at Ceaser's Palace. Nikki is gorgeous in person.I also saw Willie Garson, the guy that played Stanford on Sex and the City. He was playing $5 blackjack at the casino that used to be the Barbary Coast - my kind of guy!Needless to say, I need to recover from my weekend of drinking and celebra-whoring. I'll be back to business tomorrow.

10 Steps Toward Closing a Society: Step 10
2008-02-14 01:55:00
The shocks that allow the powerful to push through radical reforms are sometimes natural disasters and are sometimes events that are created to terrify the public. 9/11 was a devastating shock to the American system, as its aftermath provided the Patriot Act, the Department of Homeland Security, the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, the Military Commissions Act, and much more. But what if the first shock to American society that was used to benefit The Club that controls our society was not 9/11, as it may appear, but was instead the JFK assassination? How do the 10 steps towards destroying constitutional freedoms look when the focus dates back to the 50’s and 60’s, instead of just the tragic years governed by George W. Bush?*To start this post series from the beginning, start here:Suspend the rule of law Oh, how I wish I had good news. This actually works out well for me today. I was going to write Step 9 of the series I'm working on, but after the moving sale we had this weekend, I'm just not motivated for research today. Mary Ellen at The Divine Democrat has rescued me from my procrastination by tagging me for my first meme! The assignment is to:1) Pick up the nearest book2) Find page 1233) Find the first 5 sentences and read them4) Post the next 3 sentencesThe closest book to me, because of my series, was The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein. Here are the 3 sentences (and FYI: the "Ford" being referenced is the Ford Foundation, not the President):After the left in those countries had been obliterated by regimes that Ford had helped shape, it was none other than Ford that funded a new generation of crusading lawyers dedicated to freeing the hundreds of thousands of political prisoners being held by those same regimes.Given its own highly compromised history, it is hardly surprising that when Ford dived into huma...

Have you ever sat down to write a post on a topic and had so many different angles to go at it from that your post turns out to be one big tangent? That describes my day trying to write 10 Steps Towards Closing a Society: Step #8, which is Control the Press. This just isn't ready to be published today. That said though, Step # 8 will be done tomorrow. Step 9 & 10 will be soon, but I'm having a garage sale this weekend and anyone who has done this knows how much work it is. I want to write these well, so I might need a few extra days, especially Step #10: Suspend the rule of law.I feel like I'm in high school again. Can I please have an extension? I don't want to get a bad grade!I never should have promised to have one post per day for 10 days straight. From now on, no more timing promises. I'll be finished when I'm finished. That's better than writing crap, right? Now, since I won't be able to give you guys a post today, I thought you might enjoy this...Can't be serious ...

Disenfranchised in Los Angeles, California

Step 7 of the series "10 Steps Towards Closing a Society" is ready to go and will be posted tomorrow morning, but I had to tell you guys what happened to me in California today. This is ridiculous.I went to vote today around 10:30am. My polling location was almost empty except for the 4 gray haired poll workers waiting for the lunch time onslaught. I am registered Decline to State and in California we are allowed to vote in the Democratic primary. I was given a ballot titled Non-Partisan and went to the booth labeled DEM.I turned to the first page and saw the name of the person I wanted to vote for: Barack Obama. I made sure I had the right bubble, inserted my little black dot, and smiled. Then I voted for the the various propositions, literally skipped over to the grumpy old man collecting ballots, watched him put my ballot through that horrible machine, and proudly accepted my I Voted sticker. My boyfriend finished voting and while we were walking out, he turned to me and said, "Yo...

Let me put it this way: I just can't take it today.I had intended to put out one part of this series everyday for 10 days in a row, but now that it's halfway done, I think I need to take an intermission and have a typical American life for the weekend.Today will be spent watching the entire 2nd season of Beverly Hills, 90210 while cooking chili and Swedish meatballs (from scratch, I might add) for our friend's annual Super Bowl party. If I run out of episodes, I may have to go rent Season 3.Tomorrow will be spent sleeping in followed by drinking beer and eating unhealthy food while watching the Patriots break Baby Manning's heart in the Super Bowl. This weekend, instead of worrying about the future, I'm going to enjoy how great we still have it in the present. My tin-foil hat, and quite possibly my brain, is officially retired until Monday.

10 Steps Towards Closing a Society: Step 1
2008-01-29 02:27:00
Naomi Wolf wrote an article for The Guardian in April, 2007. It was based on her book, titled The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot, in which she researched the progression away from open societies and towards closed societies that have occurred in history. She found some clear patterns and, in this article, described ten “steps any would-be-dictator must take to destroy constitutional freedoms.” In September 2007, I found Naomi Wolf’s article and wrote about how many of the steps have been met by the Bush Administration. However, since writing that post, I’m starting to wonder if the Bush Administration is an expanded and accelerated part of a plan that began a long time before the Supreme Court chose George W. Bush to be our President in 2000. While the last 7 years may have been the most dramatic years in terms of losing our democracy, I no longer think that they were the beginning. I was born in 1982 and have always known that President Kenn...

New Guy In Justice Drank The Kool-Aid Too
2008-01-26 09:29:00
On Tuesday, January 22, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a confirmation hearing for two people nominated by President Bush to serve in the Justice Department. One of the people in the process of being confirmed is Gregory Katsas, who will be the Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Division. Gregory Katsas is a very strange man and his answers were also very strange. To tell you the truth, I didn't really understand what he was talking about during the whole hearing. But the other guy is the important one anyway. The other guy being confirmed is Kevin O'Connor, who will be the Associate Attorney General of the Justice Department, which is the #3 position in the Department. As we've already discussed here at Little Country Lost, Michael Mukasey (Bush's new Attorney General) and Mark Filip (Bush's new Deputy Attorney General) both have either limited grasp of the law (which I don't believe) or are protectors of the Bush Administration, as both of them have refused to label wa...

Prioritized Sadness for Heath Ledger
2008-01-23 23:50:00
I still have a MySpace account. Some people have MySpace accounts and try to rack up as many friends as possible for whatever reason. I, like a lot of other people, use it to keep in touch with old friends and most of the people on my "friends" list are people I've known in real life.On MySpace, you can post bulletins. Bulletins are not put on your public page for the internet to see, but instead appear on the opening page of your friends' accounts. People use these bulletins to say all sorts of things. In the past twenty-four hours, I've seen a topic become a bit of a pattern on my bulletin board: people are mourning Heath Ledger .It's always sad to see an actor die, or anyone die for that matter. I'm a fan of Heath Ledger's work. I feel especially bad for his baby girl. But the attention this has gotten from my peers has made me raise an eyebrow. It has to do with the the topic patterns of the bulletin board. Before Heath Ledger's death, the last topic pattern I noticed was th...

What Would You Do With The Plastic Bags?
2008-01-21 09:36:00
I took a holiday away from thinking about the state of the world this weekend so I'm not up for writing a big post today. Therefore, I'm going to ask my readers to write this one for me.Here's the question: (and I want honest answers):Let's say you had gone on a road trip to Vegas over the summer and had taken a few of those big plastic water bottles (the kind with the spout) and put them in your trunk, just in case. In that trunk was also a box of 100 sandwich sized plastic baggies. Let's say you haven't been in the mood to clean out your trunk anytime between June and January. When you finally do, you find out that one of the water bottles has leaked. The box around the plastic baggies is drenched and falls apart when you pick it up. The 100 plastic baggies are kind of scattered and have old water all over them. You throw away the leaky water bottle, and then you come back and stare into your trunk at the 100 soggy plastic baggies.Do you pick up the all the little bags, bri...

Hear "Polar Bear" Issue, Think "Oil Deal"
2008-01-18 02:47:00
The House Select Energy Independence and Global Warming Committee held a hearing today on a sneaky move by the Bush Administration to get themselves an oil deal.As everyone pretty much knows already, as our climate continues to change, polar bears are screwed. On December 26th, 2006, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service issued a proposal to list the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. If they were to be listed under the Endangered Species Act, we would be obligated to protect their habitat. The Bush Administration, however, wants to lease a big chunk of the Chukchi Sea, the polar bears' natural habitat, to the highest bidding oil company. If the polar bear were to be declared an endangered species, the Bush Administration would not be able to move forward with their 29.4 million acre deal because the entire area would need to be protected for the safety of the species. This is because the construction, the drilling, and the transportation routes needed...

Here's something you are going to have a hard time finding: The results of the Michigan primary for the Democratic ticket:Hillary Clinton... 328,151 votes... 55.3%Uncommitted ... 237,762 votes ... 40.0%Dennis Kucinich ... 21,708 votes ... 3.7%Chris Dodd ... 3,853 votes ... 0.6%Mike Gravel ... 2,363 votes ... 0.4%Things that are beyond wrong about this:Michigan voters were blatantly disenfranchised. Wasn't even hidden. The Democratic ballots were tainted in multiple ways: The ballots were missing the names of two of the leading candidates The ballots have the name of one person that is no longer running The ballots included write-in sections, but if you wrote in a name, your vote didn't countand, as expected, there was incredibly low voter turnout. This is so damn illegal, I can't even stand it!The media is completely ignoring all parts of this whole story.
