GOE 3, Part 2: In the Face of Evil
2007-09-20 21:05:00
Read Part 1 first. The weather cleared a bit and became fairly pleasant as the day wore on, but it was the only thing becoming more pleasant. Outside the Capitol where Jake and I were, the mood was so tense it was palpable. We sat with Michelle Malkin and Bryan Preston for a while while Michelle live-blogged, and we tried to ignore the straggling moonbats as they shuffled by in twos and threes, screaming obscenities and giving us the finger. I told Jake not to waste his time and energy on the individuals walking by?there would be far more of them soon enough. My words became true after another hour of waiting, and soon the street was awash in a sea of coward?s yellow. Signs screamed everything from ?Get Out of Iraq? to ?Stop Bombing Lebanon.? Were we bombing Lebanon? I didn?t know that. Those moonbats were sure well-informed. I asked a few of them as they walked by if they could name the countries bordering Iraq but their only answer was unprintable and had something to do w...

Part 1: Perspective
2007-09-19 06:26:00
I was there in March, when the mud and the frigid wind couldn’t stop tens of thousands of us from standing up to say, “Never again!” to the anti-American Left at the first Gathering of Eagles rally. I was there in May, when the unforgiving sun beat down upon thousands more of us as we stood before Lincoln to honor those who have gone before, and those who go today. I was there Saturday, when the “peace-loving” hippies threw eggs, kicked shins, pointed fingers, and started fights, all in the name of peace. But this time, I didn’t see them through my eyes. I saw them through the eyes of a soldier who has given more of himself than all of those rainbow-clad freaks marching under a coward’s yellow banner. SPC Jake Altman is a fresh-faced, somewhat shy 21-year-old who lost his right hand and almost lost both legs in Iraq this spring. I met him Friday night at Walter Reed when he came up to us after the counter-protest. With tear-filled eyes, he t...

Fallen But Never Forgotten
2007-08-19 18:24:00
Kory Wiens and his dog Cooper are my desktop wallpaper, a reminder that teamwork, sacrifice, and service to country are paramount. The first military working dog team killed in action together since the beginning of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were laid to rest together July 18. Cpl. Kory D. Wiens, 20, of the 94th Mine Dog Detachment, 5th Engineer Battalion, 1st Engineer Brigade of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and his partner, Cooper, were killed July 6 by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Muhammad Sath, Iraq. They had been in Iraq since January. The cremated remains of Wiens and Cooper, a Labrador retriever, were buried together at Salt Creek Cemetery in Wiens? hometown of Dallas, Ore., at the request of his family, said Master Sgt. Matt McHugh, the family?s casualty assistance officer. ?Kory referred to Cooper as his son, that?s now much of a team they were,? McHugh said. Read the whole story. Powered by ScribeFire.

Mattis to Sharratt: Case Dismissed!
2007-08-10 04:42:00
by guest author Gary Gross My good friend Darryl Sharratt just posted the good news on Freepers. Here?s what Darryl posted: At 7:00 PST, 9 August 2007 Justin and his attorney met with a Marine Corps representative in an office at Camp Pendleton, CA. At this time, my son LCpl Justin Sharratt, was handed an official Marine Corps Disposition of Charges document declaring the charges stemming from the 19 November 2005 Haditha engagement have been officially dismissed. The last line of the two page Disposition Of Charges document ended with these words from the General, ?And as you have always remained cloaked in the presumption of innocence, with this dismissal of charges, you remain in the eyes of the law- and in my eyes- innocent.? Lt. Gen James T. Mattis Jim Robinson? My family would like to offer you a sincere and deep felt thank you. During our darkest days you allowed us to publish our story here on Free Republic. Military (In)Justice Finally Makes the MSM
2007-08-09 18:36:00
They didn’t get the case right (Hutchins is squad leader for the Pendleton 8, not the Haditha Marines), but at this point, I’m just happy someone is finally paying attention at all. The Marine veterans discussed in this article are the ones I’ve been working with for the last year and a half both directly and indirectly. I’m glad the story is finally getting out. (SALEM, Ore.) - A Marine convicted for murder in Haditha, Iraq is receiving increasing public support by those who believe he is not guilty. Marine Sergeant Lawrence Hutchins has been sentenced to 15-years for the killings in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. Friends say Hutchins is innocent. Advocates say a number of the government’s dirty secrets bear their load on this Marine, considered by many as a scapegoat. The particular case in Iraq involves the questionable death of one Iraqi civilian male. Sgt. Lawrence Hutchins III’s parents are not taking it in stride; meeting recently with th...

Judge Orders Man to Clean Memorial With Toothbrush
2007-08-08 21:00:00
This amused me. A Michigan man scrubbed a monument to U.S. troops with a toothbrush Tuesday while wearing a T-shirt that read “I Stole From Veterans” as part of a punishment for a scam to solicit scrap yards for metal, the Saginaw News reports. A judge ordered Philip Kolinski, 73, of Carrollton Township, Mich., to wash the veterans monument outside the Saginaw County Governmental Center after he was found guilty of soliciting metal donations for a sculpture dedicated to Iraq War veterans that was never built, the Saginaw News said. Instead of using the metal for a monument, he sold it and kept the money, the paper reports. Powered by ScribeFire.

Hamas Shortens Sentences if Prisoners Memorize the Koran
2007-08-08 20:49:00
From Jihad Watch: Wait a minute. Doesn’t Hamas want people not to read the Qur’an? After all, as Jim Guirard has told us, the jihadists engage in “deliberate misreading, ignoring and perverting of passages of the Qur’an, the Hadith and the Islamic Jurisprudence (the Fiqh).” And he must be right, no? After all, all sorts of powerful people in Washington listen to him. But consider this: if that were really true, would Hamas really encourage Qur’an-reading and memorization? Wouldn’t they be afraid that in the course of this study someone would discover all the true, peaceful teachings of Islam, and renounce Hamas and its targeting of civilians? Yet Hamas doesn’t seem troubled by that possibility at all. Hmmm. Powered by ScribeFire.

National Aircraft Maintenance Technician Day
2007-08-08 02:11:00
It’s coming, oddly enough. WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 3, 2007) - A resolution to create National Aviation Maintenance Technician Day (H. Res. 444) passed the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and will go to the House of Representatives for a vote this fall. The resolution will then be considered by the Senate before going to the President. The resolution, which has the backing of the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (PAMA), will create a national day to honor and recognize the achievements of the Wright brothers’ first flight mechanic Charles E. Taylor, and all certificated aviation maintenance professionals. I will have my own holiday. Woo. Powered by ScribeFire.

I Would Rather Die in a Terrorist Attack
2007-08-06 21:23:00
Sometimes I go over to Daily Kos. I admit it. I don’t visit there out of a sense of “fairness,” or because I think I need to see how crazy the other side of the fence is. I’m well aware of the Left’s inability to string together anything coherent. The reason that you can find me at Daily Kos, Democratic underground, and other cesspools of breeding “progressive” bacteria is simple. Entertainment. Where else can you read about the adventures of Bush the Weathermaker and his hatred of “black people?” How else would I know that hurricanes aren’t caused by nature but by Republicans? So, imagine my non-surprise when I read at LGF that the moonbats at Daily Kos stayed up too late again with the strobe light on. Titled “I would rather die in a terrorist attack,” the following missive is beyond priceless. It’s not really amusing, because idiocy is genetic, and no one has kids faster than a liberal idiot suc...

Buzz Patterson on The Front Line
2007-08-04 23:06:00
Retired Air Force officer Buzz Patterson was my guest on the show last night. You may remember him as the man who carried the ?nuclear football? for President Clinton. He is also the author of several books, including Dereliction of Duty and his latest book entitled War Crimes: The Left?s Campaign to Destroy Our Military and Lose the War on Terror. Here?s a sample from last night?s show: ?I was a little bit naive when I went to Iraq? I really thought the media was undermining our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and the War on Terror. I found out it was much bigger than that; it is Democratic politicians; its academics, our professors and our deans and college presidents on university campuses across the country; its Hollywood popular culture; its anti-war organizations like Code Pink for Peace and United for Peace and Justice; its this ?Wahhabi lobby,? I call it in the book, with funding from George Soros and MoveOn.org and the Ford Foundation that really wants to see America...

There ARE Anti-Dhimmi Brits Out There
2007-07-28 01:18:00
Such as this stand-up pilot on British Airways, who threw a whiny Muslim and his entire entourage off his plane after the man, a sheik in Qatar, complained that three of his female relatives had been seated next to…wait for it…strange men. MILAN (Reuters) - A Qatar sheikh held up a British Airways flight at Milan’s Linate airport for nearly three hours after discovering three of his female relatives had been seated next to men they did not know. When none of the other business class passengers agreed to swap seats, the sheikh, a member of Qatar’s ruling family, went to the pilot, who had already started the engine, to complain, an airport official said. But the pilot ordered him and his traveling companions, the three women, two men, a cook and a servant, off the plane. The London-bound flight took off nearly three hours behind schedule Thursday evening and around 50 of the 115 passengers missed connecting flights. Traditions in the conservative Gulf Arab reg...

Cindy Sheehan Wants to Imprison YOU
2007-07-28 00:01:00
This gem is on the website of the self-proclaimed “Camp Casey Peace Institute.” It is about time us ?peasants? (in the eyes of the Fascist Ruling Elite) march on DC with our ?pitchforks? of righteous anger and our ?torches? of truth to demand the ouster of BushCo. I have a dream of the detention centers that George has built and filled being instead filled with Orange Clad neo-cons and neo-connettes. (emphasis mine) That woman is out of her ever-loving gourd crazy. I hope Gathering of Eagles and other patriotic Americans stand in front of her, every single place that woman shows her face for anti-U.S. purposes–forever.

Update on Murtha Letter Campaign
2007-07-26 19:26:00
This comes in from Marine SGT Tim Sumner: I visited John Murtha ’s Congressional district office in Johnstown yesterday and delivered these emails, as promised, with Darryl Sharrett’s on top of the stack. For the benefit of anyone new to this web site or to this thread: On May 17, 2006, Congressman Murtha said Marines had, “killed innocent civilians in cold blood,” in Haditha, Iraq. Darryl Sharratt lives in the district that Congressman Murtha represents. Mr. Sharratt’s son, Marine Lance Corporal Justin Sharratt, is under investigation for the November 19, 2005, deaths of civilians in Haditha. The investigating officer has strong recommended that the charges against LCpl Sharratt be dismissed. On July 10, 2007, Congressman Murtha’s office stated that, ?Congressman Murtha doesn?t have a statement because the investigation is still ongoing.? I went to Congressman Murtha’s office yesterday to inquire, not to protest. While his greeting was profe...

Update on MARSOC Case
2007-07-26 19:05:00
The MARSOC case, hailed a few months ago as the next example of Marines and soldiers being screwed over for doing their job, is actually rather quiet. My contact at MARSOC sends the following along: Despite the initial flurry of coverage — and one reporter’s anonymous but supposedly official, reliable, credible source who declared nearly three months ago that charges were imminent — there remains no new word on the investigation into that matter. That process is being carried out methodically, deliberately and purposefully in order to determine what happened while at the same time preserving the presumption of innocence of our Marines and Sailors…Meanwhile, I thought you would like to know that we have another Marine Special Operations Company out, engaged, and doing exceptionally well by all accounts. Purple hearts abound — most recent count was seven approved with more on the table — but fortunately we are giving more than we take. We have su...

Pendleton 8: Thomas Acquitted of Murder, Convicted on Conspiracy
2007-07-19 18:42:00
CPL Trent Thom as , one of the Marines accused of murder in the Pendleton 8 case, was acquitted of murder charges yesterday at the end of a court-martial that was well over a year in coming. The panel found him guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, which I still find to be a complete travesty and miscarriage of justice. Then again, what do I know? I’ve only got the documents proving the agents in this case are lying, incompetent fools. But never mind the facts, let’s move on to the politics of the whole thing. Thomas was the first to be convicted in an actual court-martial. All but two of the other seven members of the ill-fated squad have been quietly pled out and put away. During Thomas’ proceedings, some of them were brought out and paraded as pawns for the prosecution, told how to talk and what to say. When their testimony didn’t match well enough with the rules of the government’s game, the Marines were brought to the back of the room and thre...

The following comes to us from my boys over at RangerUp.com, a bunch of stalwart patriots and active duty/veterans who are, in short, just plain awesome. Read the whole thing, because it’s a great cause–helping our wounded. ————— The Ranger Up Serious Monologue Our nation owes everything to the brave men and women who have the courage to step into harms way time and time again so that we may live peacefully here at home. As we all know, many of our nation?s heroes have paid for our freedoms with their lives. Many more still have come home with life-changing injuries. These men and women lay injured in our nation?s hospitals or have finally transitioned home ? into lives significantly altered. People that were once the finest of athletes with the best employment prospects find themselves worried about how they are going to adapt into their new lives ? how will they work, exercise, live? As many folks we?ve spoken to that have undergone major...

Sunday Reflections
2007-07-15 19:09:00
I know I’ve been horrible at updating ER lately.  There is so much going on with Haditha and the Pendleton 8 and the rest of this, and I’m deep enough in the thick of it that I don’t have time to write.  I’m doing my best to get back here. In the meantime, others more eloquent than I continue to write, and this is one such missive.  Every so often I read something that inspires me, that lifts me up, dusts me off, and puts me back on the front lines to fight.  These articles are admittedly few and far in between, but when I find them it is like a fresh clip of ammo dropped into my foxhole by Providence when I thought perhaps all was lost.  This is one of those. Written by Chris Hill, Nat’l Director for Gathering of Eagles, it is a snapshot of the things in my heart.  I was reading it this morning, just toodling along, thinking, “Yes, this is how I feel…this is good stuff…” and then the last paragraph ...

Danny Dietz Memorial Dedicated
2007-07-06 02:50:00
Liberals in the town of Littleton, Colorado–true to form–had a problem with a memorial honoring a native son, fallen Navy SEAL Danny Dietz, because the memorial was a sculpture of Dietz with his weapon. Apparently liberals would rather that a true American warrior and hero be depicted with a cup of Starbucks and a beret. Weapons are so…violent. “I don’t think young children should be exposed to that in that way - unsupervised by their parents or any adults,” said Emily Cassidy, one of the mothers. I wonder if Ms. Cassidy has a problem with her children being exposed to homosexuality “unsupervised” at school. But I digress. Despite their whining, the memorial was dedicated on July 4–Independence Day. It was fitting to honor Dietz on that day, perhaps our most sacred. One of Blackfive’s readers attended the memorial. We got to the park just after 9:30 am. Already there were about 100 people there, not including the many Patr...

Independence Day, Part 2
2007-07-04 08:29:00
There are things we should remember always. They should be ingrained in us as deeply as our names.  They should be something more than words–they should be the core of who we are. Duty.  Honor.  Country.  Patriotism.  Commitment.   These are not bits of sugar for our mouths, they are not feel-good salves for our conscience in a world gone mad. They are the only way we can save our nation from its destruction at the hands of Islamic barbarians, socialists, and men who, in the words of John Stuart Mill, think there is nothing worth fighting for. Independence Day is more than fireworks and steak and cold beer.  It’s more than a day off work, spent at the beach or the lake or the back porch.  It is a time for reflection, to remember the path others laid out for us, marked in blood and guts–and yes, glory.  War is a disgusting side effect of mankind’s nature.  However, there is nothing more glorious than the sight of a flag standing after a long, terrifying night&...

Independence Day, Part 1
2007-07-04 06:59:00
Progressive.org, cesspool of communists, socialists, and anti-American floozies, had a piece up today that made me want to sit down and write for the first time in a long time.  Titled “Put Away the Flags,” this missive was a slap in the face to anyone who has worn the uniform, anyone who has ever believed that our nation’s ideals stand for something bigger and more beautiful than any of us can ever achieve alone. On this July 4, we would do well to renounce nationalism and all its symbols: its flags, its pledges of allegiance, its anthems, its insistence in song that God must single out America to be blessed. Is not nationalism — that devotion to a flag, an anthem, a boundary so fierce it engenders mass murder — one of the great evils of our time, along with racism, along with religious hatred? These ways of thinking — cultivated, nurtured, indoctrinated from childhood on — have been useful to those in power, and deadly for those out of pow...

Semper Fidelis
2007-06-29 08:55:00
I came across this article today. Thought I’d share a quote from it. Those of you who know me know why. The phrase is “Always faithful.” It isn’t “Sometimes Faithful.” Nor is it “Usually Faithful,” but always. It is not negotiable. It is not relative, but absolute. God bless those for whom Semper Fidelis is more than a catchy phrase. May their tribe increase forever.

Battlefield Leadership
2007-06-28 20:33:00
Some wisdom from Hal Moore. This inspired me. What an incredible leader. These are some comments, based on my limited experience, on a Lead er’s: - Preparations for battlefield leadership - My own philosophy on the conduct of a leader in battle Preparations: Could fill a book. Only a few items: 1. Read military history. Read small unit actions. Personality of a big battle is often formed by a small unit action 2. Visit historic battlefields with maps, books in hand. 3. Install the WILL TO WIN in your unit. No 2nd place trophies in trophy cases. 4. Build unit discipline, teamwork. A team of fighters 5. Prepare your unit for your death (or being gravely wounded and evacuated) and for your subordinate leader’s loss also. A Squad Leader must be ready to command a platoon or the company. PRACTICE THIS! 6. Squad leaders and Fire Team leaders must know how to adjust artillery/mortar fire. Live fire is not always necessary. You can do this with marbles and a s...
