Dan Rather’s Lawsuit Against CBS
2007-09-28 20:35:00
After being fired 3 years ago, Dan Rather seems to be on the prowl again. Apparently he has brought forth a lawsuit against CBS claiming that he was unfairly fired from his position. Most of the details surrounding the lawsuit have to do with the piece that Rather put together claiming that President Bush never finished his service in the National Guard in Alabama. The documents that were used to support this conclusion were soon after purported to be false, however, it seems that the question of their validity may once again need to be analyzed. Whether or not the documents are in fact trustworthy though, is not the most important part of this lawsuit. It would be rather interesting if they did turn out to be true and that George Bush never did actually complete his service in the Alabama Air National Guard, but these details are much less important. His actions in the past really do not affect his actions while serving as leader of this country. They may shed light on his ch...

The Quality of Reporting in the Mainstream Media
2007-09-27 22:04:00
The role of the media is very important in any society. The way that the news is reported has a great impact upon the way that the country as a whole develops its opinions on many issues. Authoritarian governments have notoriously used state run media outlets to spew propaganda to unify their country and justify its leaders’ actions and decisions despite the fact that a portion of this reporting touted misinformation. Similarly, the Mainstream Media in the United States has a vast influence over the views of a large portion of the population. Even if one suggests that the number of people who rely on traditional news outlets in this country is shrinking, it is still an important factor in the course of events. Therefor, if the media gets the facts surrounding an important story incorrect then many people will similarly be affected by these falsities. Even worse, the Mainstream Media may collectively decide not to report on an important issue, leaving many people in the d...

Hypocrisy Surrounding the NY Times MoveOn.org Advert
2007-09-23 20:26:00
I would like the start off by saying that I do not necessarily subscribe to the ideas put forth in the MoveOn advertisement, in fact I have never read the silly thing. The important part of the controversy, however, does not lie in whether or not you believe the message of the New York ...

Poor Political Leadership? Blame the Public!
2007-09-22 19:24:00
I saw the numbers for recent approval polls for both Congress and the president, and they were rather abysmal. The president rang in at 29% while Congress apparently could only muster approval from 11% of those who were polled. It can be debated why these numbers are so low, but one thing is ...

The National Debt, the Budget Deficit, and Cutting the Deficit
2007-09-21 14:58:00
For the longest time I really couldn’t cut through the language used by politicians and economists to decifer exactly what was meant by the phrases “national debt,” “deficit,” and “cutting the deficit.” It occurred to me that perhaps other people, even those who toss these terms around in arguments, similarly do not know what ...

Expansion of Governmental Surveillance Powers
2007-08-26 00:22:00
Human nature is a difficult thing to control, especially when individuals are put into positions of power. Lord Acton’s Dictum states that “power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” It goes on the add that “Great men are almost always bad men.” Such is the situation we find ourselves in ...

The China-Russia Partnership
2007-08-25 13:20:00
Spending and spending and spending.  Being stubborn in one’s ways.  Consuming more than you can produce and or buy.  Individuals who live by this creed often quickly run into debt and eventually have all the luxuries they purchased stripped away from them.  It is not a sustainable way to operate.  The United States as a ...

Saddam to be Reinstated in Iraq
2007-08-25 10:17:00
Due to the extreme lack of leadership that has been displayed by the Iraq i Parliament and Prime Minister al-Maliki, President Bush and his closest advisors have decided to make some changes in the government of the struggling country.  They wanted somebody who would be strong, like Saddam Hussein, but since Saddam is obviously unavailable to ...
