McConnell Gets his Revenge

U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers (R) Stumping for Rep. Brandon Smith (R)
2008-01-22 14:34:00 Longtime Washington veteran U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers (R,KY-5) was making his rounds for state Rep. Brandon Smith (R) in his bid to replace Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo (D) in state Senate District 30. Not sure if Rogers was on the ground or working the phones, but Bell County seemed to the Rogers' focal point. Yet another Democratic official is rumored to be supporting Smith, a member of the Bell County Democratic Party Executive Committee, Dennis Short, is rumored to have been out campaigning for Smith. The Short family is quite large and if my source is talking about two different Dennis Shorts, I apologize in advance. Short ran an unsuccessful campaign against current Bell County state Rep. Rick Nelson (D) in the 2006 Democratic primary. If the rumor is indeed true, I call on the Bell County Democratic Party Executive Committee to remove Short immediately, without delay. With Rogers out campaigning for Smith, does state Senate President David Williams (R) publicly r...
Andrew Horne on Martin Luther King Jr.
2008-01-21 23:56:00 Statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday, 21 January 2008 Today, we remember a great American—a servant of God and his fellow man, whose voice of inspiration echoed across our country and ushered in a new civic awakening. Dr. King’s life and legacy serve as proud testaments to the promise of this country and its people. We should strive every day to live up to his message of peace and justice. Though leaders like him come along too rarely and are with us for too short a time, as long as we continue to build on Martin Luther King's dream, he will live on forever. -Andrew Horne More About: Martin Luther King Jr
Two Weeks to Go Before the Senate District 30 Special Election
2008-01-21 03:02:00 I have reports from the Harlan and Bell Counties and I am afraid to say, that I am afraid. An independent poll, no idea how it was conducted but I trust the source, says former state Rep. Scott Alexander (D) and state Rep. Brandon Smith (R) are in a virtual dead heat in Harlan County. My source says a recent poll showed Alexander with a 52% to 48% lead over Smith. I also have been asking around if anyone from the Kentucky Democratic Party had been reaching out to local community leaders. The answer across the board was NO, a couple did say a person was working out of Harlan making calls for Alexander, Attorney Kellie Wilson Lee was also out working, of course she must have changed her ways because she has traditionally been a supporter of Rep. Brandon Smith (D), Attorney Kellie Wilson Lee bagged her a high paying gig at the Governor's Office for Local Development, GOLD, along with Bell County Democratic Party Chair Leo Haggerty. I had been bombarded with emails and calls about Hag... More About: District , Senate , Election , Special , Weeks
Al Cross Gets it Right and Gets it Wrong, The Press Needs a Calculator
2008-01-20 18:13:00 I respect Al Cross , I think he is probably one of the most talented journalists in Kentucky, but his opinions and political analysis are both right and wrong. First of all I am deeply disappointed in the MSM, as usual they have no desire to look to the blogs except to steal our stories without credit, Page One finally cracked that mold last week. I wish members of the main stream media would pick up a simple 2 dollar calculator and punch in the numbers. One of my influential friends, quiet ironically a Republican, says their not smart enough, I disagree, I think they are so scared to appear to be sided with Governor Steve Beshear (D) they are willing to let the facts sort of disappear. It is amazing that an all powerful estimate, that has ironically been mention is EVERY media outlet in this Commonwealth, declared that Kentucky would in fact be the worse casino operating state east of the big river. It could be said the LRC's economists played their own form of politics, t... More About: Calculator , Press , The Press , Wrong
Clinton Wins Nevada, Obama's Praise for Reagan may have Cost him Big
2008-01-20 01:39:00 The Democratic Presidential primary may have hit fever pitch today as Senator Obama (D) is claiming to have won 13 out of the 25 delegates, but the system in Nevada is weighted and Clinton is accusing the Unions of voter intimidation at the special voting precincts that were created for casino workers. But Senator Hillary Clinton (D) will walk away with a clear victory in the Nevada. Senator Obama (D) may have went too far with his (praise of) the late President Ronald Reagan (R). I wish Obama would have said something like "Regan, he was alright", but no, he had to elevate Reagan above President Bill Clinton (D), even though most know the root of the discontent, it is not wise to alienate the anti-reagan block of the Democratic party. I really don't understand why Obama did that, it may cost him the primary when it is all said and done. Now Clinton has Irvin "Magic" Johnson campaigning for her via radio and personal appearances. I think Clinton baited Obama and his supporters a... More About: Cost , Praise
Col. Andrew Horne Gets Into The Blogging Game!
2008-01-19 15:01:00 This is got to be scaring the MSM to death, Democratic hopeful for U.S. Senate Col. Andrew Horne has jumped in with both feet into the blogosphere and I predict success for the very talented retired Marine. On DailyKos I wanted to stop by and thank everyone here for their support and good wishes as I made my decision about challenging Mitch McConnell here in Kentucky. The outpouring of support coming from the Netroots was one of the factors that led me to believe we have a real shot at "Daschling" the biggest obstructionist the Senate has ever known. So I’m in, and I’m in this to win. Our Louisville headquarters is open for business, and our Online HQ is now up and running. Mathematical Proof the LRC Low-Balled Casino Revenue Projections, Predicted
2008-01-19 05:41:00 As we showed last night it appears the LRC economists calculated that Governor Steve Beshear's (D) estimates in regards to tax revenue generated by casino gaming were indeed short by almost $200 million. We calculated that it appeared the LRC only used a 3 or 4 casino model for their equations but it was later revealed that they indeed used a 9 casino model. Indiana admissions topped 15,300,000 in 2007. If you divide that by their 10 operating casinos, each casino would average 1,530,000 people in 2007. Do a little more math and you would see that Indiana casinos average 4,250 visitors per day. Illinois casinos topped 17,725,437, each of the 9 casinos would average 1,969,493 per year, 164,124 per month and 5470 admissions per day. Chicago obviously helps the average daily attendance for the Illinois casinos. With the LRC calculating a $314 million annual tax revenue from 9 casinos at a 35% tax rate and $92 per person, per visit , we can calculate the average attendance per day ... Senator Williams Fuming Over Beshear's Democratic Leadership
2008-01-19 03:51:00 Well now, how the tables have turned for King David Williams and the State GOP. It goes without saying that Williams must have forgotten to take his hypocrite pill this morning as he had no problem with former Governor Ernie Fletcher (R) campaigning for numerous Republican elected officials and Republican hopefuls in the past. Now that Governor Steve Beshear (D) is doing what every damn governor has done for 200 years, the press reflects his slime in every major MSM outlet in the state. I know Senate President Williams (R) has a job to do for his party, when a bitter nomination process results in a seemingly unified Democratic base, it is his job to stir the pot and hopefully re-stoke those embers into flames once again. As we reported (HERE), Governor Steve Beshear and Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo spent most the day Wednesday helping out fellow Democrat Scott Alexander in his bid to succeed Mongiardo in the state Senate. Casino Revenue Debate Heats Up and I do some Math, How does it really add u
2008-01-18 05:26:00 Economists say the state's take from the revenue generated by casino gaming is lower than Governor Steve Beshear's (D) consistent total of around $500 million per year. The LRC’s economists predicted the totals from this formula; (Pol Watchers) The LRC study calculated the $314 million by estimating the number of visitors and multiplying it by the average amount each would lose, which is $92 per visit, to determine a total revenue of nearly $900 million for casinos. With a 35 percent tax rate in the 2007 bill, that would give the state $314 million. With only a $900 million in gross revenue, Kentucky would likely entertain only 3 or 4 casinos. Illinois operates 9 casinos. They use the following tax system; Graduated tax rate from 15% to 50% of gross gaming revenue, $2-3 per patron admissions tax. The admissions bring in an extra $16.18 million. Illinois brings in an annual gross casino revenue of $1.924 billion from 9 operational casinos. Using the state's tax system, Illi... Should Ernie Fletcher and Bill Nighbert be Investigated?
2008-01-18 03:00:00 I understand the cliche live and let live, especially after a successful election. But when your desperate opponent sacks the village dry and apparently helps themselves to tens of millions of dollars of our money, it is time to make an example out of that opponent. Larry Dale Keeling is relaying a presentation made to our General Assembly today that may prove that former Governor Ernie Fletcher (R) and former "acting" Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert may have unlawfully spent tons of our money from the highway construction contingency account to help Fletcher in the 2007 elections. Keeling says the highway construction contingency account only hit the $10 million mark once between 2001 and 2007, that was in 2004. But the spending broke the $10 million mark 3 times in 2007. $12.3 million - May 2007 $12.8 million - September $25.3 million - October See that, $25.3 million in October! This breaks all previous records and it appears Fletcher had quite...
Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) May be In Big Trouble This Time
2008-01-17 23:56:00 This is yet another example of McConnell's apparent willingness to deny good Americans, and veterans, their right to free speech. We are at war and I have been there, I know the fear, the anxiety and now have a best friend in the belly of the beast, I am also GOD Father to his 4 children. This is an insane example of what can happen when leaders are willing to deny their employees their right to free speech and their right to peaceful assembly. These accusations toward the Republican Minority Leader could in fact bring the all powerful oz to his knees. It is always a wee child that is the most dangerous, from King Herod to Senator McConnell, history always seems to repeat itself because those in power are blinded, thus they they fall into the pit, this time he may not escape. This situation is particularly disturbing, the allegations may prove that Senator McConnell (R-KY) has no problem destroying a mother, the wife of a service member at war, veteran and a family. Beshear and Mongiardo Politicin' for Alexander
2008-01-17 04:28:00 Governor Steve Beshear and Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo spent the day supporting the Democratic candidate for the state Senate District 30 special election, former state Rep. Scott Alexander today in Harlan and Perry counties. Beshear and Mongiardo traveled through the district ending their day at a fund-raiser in Hazard. I guess Senate President David Williams' (R) suggestion that Governor Beshear stay out of this special election sort of went in one ear and out the other. While nerves were frayed in the district during the nomination process, all seems well in the Democratic heartland of the mountains. Harlan is lining up nicely for Alexander as many in Bell and Harlan predict a blowout there. Alexander defeated Smith in last year's house race in Perry by 5 percentage points, so the stars are aligning for a Alexander victory.
Complaint coming against Democratic Senate Candidate Greg Fischer?
2008-01-17 01:42:00 Page One has posted repeated examples of potential wrong doing by NOW Democratic Candidate for the U.S. Senate Greg Fischer (D). Jake knows the FEC game and I find it hard to believe his posts are pure fluff. Exhibit A From Page One He says he hasn’t made up his mind about running for the United States Senate but an email Greg Fischer sent to tons of people on December 24, 2007 suggests otherwise. In the message, sent from Fischer’s Dant Clayton corporate email account, he sends a plea for finance staff. Young, old, experienced, inexperienced, it doesn’t matter to him. We won’t waste time pointing out to Fischer that an experienced finance team is crucial. What we will point out, though, is that conducting campaign business via a corporate email account on corporate equipment is a violation of campaign finance law. That sort of activity? It’s considered a corporate contribution and doesn’t fly with the FEC. Exhibit B From Page One This time he is registering dom... More About: Complaint
It's Getting Hot Down Here in the 16th Senate District
2008-01-17 01:06:00 Whoop boy I was lit up a few minutes ago by an elderly neighbor for being a Beshear supporter. I will leave his name out of it, he has his good moments. If we could harness all the bitching energy in Whitley County we would never need to mine one more bucket of coal. If I heard I-Told-You-So once, I heard it 50 times today as many in this red region are dead set on believing the axed road project expansion, that Senate President David Williams (R) took credit for, and not even in this county, was pure political hackery and many are taking bets on whats next. You can't explain it to people when they have their ears completely stuffed with political hate, it does no good, so I just laugh and walk away. Many believe the Southeast Regional Agricultural and Exposition Center here in Corbin is next, rumors are it is in need of more state cash. Crowley Drinks the McConnell Push Poll Koolaid
2008-01-16 04:58:00 I am disappointed in Pat Crowley , he certainly did not do his homework on this push poll by Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY). BlueGrassRoots summed it up the best (HERE). When journaists say to me, "I don't entertain internal polling as fact" and you know who you are, not Crowley by the way, it makes me think maybe they don't. When a reputal journalist like Crowley makes statements like "KY U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell has a new poll that shows he would trounce any opponents." Show us the Money
2008-01-16 01:10:00 Dave Adams gets it right with this thread on the Bluegrass Policy Blog. More transparency in Government is always a positive step toward the revival of ethics and sound decision making. This should be a simple decision for Governor Beshear and I think we should all get together and aggravate him on this. Bluegrass Policy Blog Last year, the governors of Missouri and South Carolina signed executive orders requiring websites to show taxpayers how they are spending state money. Missouri's is already up and South Carolina's must be running by March 1. Governor Beshear doesn't need for the legislature to require his administration to show us what it is up to with our money. There is already a bill -- and it's passage should keep a future governor from changing his mind about bringing government out of the shadows -- but we could get started on this right away with an executive order of our own. Kentucky General Assembly: Damned if they Do and Damned if they Don't
2008-01-16 00:37:00 The Family Foundation always seems to be a thorn in the ass and the poison in the belly that slows progress in Kentucky , either by spreading their hate via the Kentucky Citizen or standing on their hypocritical stump preaching against gambling in Kentucky. The Family Foundation has teamed up, as always, with Say No to Casinos to spread the word of GOD and to stop Vito Corleone from making Kentucky his home. I thought this country was built on the foundation of, We the People, not we the Kentucky General Assembly . When an issue of such polarity such as a constitutional amendment for and or against casino gaming is being debated; it is in the best interest of the members of the Kentucky General Assembly to listen to the people. We know these right wingers only use the Constitution when it suits them. They seem to have no problem distorting the spirit of our Constitution by making the ridiculous suggestion that Kentucky Lawmakers should ignore the people's voice. Of course they ar...
Senate District 30 Will Have to Wait Until 2008 To Know Who Their Democrati
2007-12-21 04:27:00 A source close to the situation is telling me that the voters of senate district 30 will have to wait until the first week of January of 2008 before they will know who their Democratic candidate will be for the upcoming special election. Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo (D) vacated that office earlier this month. The committees will have to cast their weighted votes before the regular session of the Kentucky General Assembly is called to order, if they fail to chose a candidate before that time,it could result in Senat e President Williams (R) calling the date of the special election, I am sure that will not happen. The Democrats in the mix are former state Rep. Scott Alexander, former state Rep. Roger Noe and former Bell County Attorney Bill Hayes. It appears that Alexander and Noe are neck to neck but the spoiler could be Hayes. The committee votes are weighted per number of committee members divided by the number of Democratic voters in the last Presidential election, so the ... More About: District , Wait
Could The Commonwealth's Budget Crisis Accelerate a Casino Gaming Amendment
2007-12-21 02:13:00 I have been sparring today with some Corbin Republicans about the possibility of an accelerated casino gaming amendment as a direct result of our failed budget. Certainly the Republican apparatus led by Senate President David Williams (R) can not sit idly by and do nothing to improve our financial situation. The Herald Leader reported today that our nursing inspectors were challenged to use their own clerical items to save state cash. "Inspectors also were warned that "there is NO MONEY in the budget at the present time," so they should bring in pens and pencils from home and not use state paper to copy nursing home records unless "absolutely necessary." This is commonly called pinching a quarter until the eagle screams and it can not get any worse. I will admit that I am not a huge fan of gambling and I do not gamble that often, but I recognize the need for an infusion of cash and expanded gaming could be the answer. Opponents will point toward the lot... More About: Gaming , Amendment , Casino , Budget , Crisis
ARH Strike May be Coming to an End
2007-12-21 00:13:00 Being born and raised in Harlan I was raised being told the stories of the UMWA and the struggle of striking families. I can not imagine being on the picket line for this long and the despair is all but amplified during Christmas. It appears an agreement might finally be in the works. Hopefully this ends soon. From WYMT A tentative agreement has been reached between hundreds of Appalachian nurses and the region's largest health care provider, possibly putting an end to the months long labor dispute. The Kentucky and West Virginia nurses associations made a joint announcement today with officials from Appalachian Regional Healthcare. Both sides said details of the agreement won't be disclosed until the 700 registered nurses at ARH vote on the new contract between tomorrow and Saturday. The union's chief negotiator, Pat Tanner, says the proposed contract addresses the nurses' issues. Dan Fitzpatrick with ARH says the tentative agreement reflects compromises by both parties... Rep. Brandon Smith (R) Rumored to be OUT of the Senate District 30 Special
2007-12-20 01:25:00 A very, very credible source has just told me that Rep. Brandon Smith (R) will NOT seek the Republican nomination for the upcoming Senat e District 30 special election. WARNING: Smith is a consistent liar and one half of Harlan just knew he was switching to Democrat a few years ago. So anything is possible with this guy. But the source is solid and the reason behind Smith's doubt is the fact that the Democrats are rumored to be gearing up to not only beat him in this senate election but they are bringing the thunder for his house race. A rumored Attorney General opinion states that Smith may not be able to hold on to his house seat if he runs for the state senate. So many rumors and so little time. The Democratic scenario is also getting complicated. Former state Rep. Roger Noe and former state Rep. Scott Alexander are rumored to be neck to neck for their party's consideration. Spencer may have been offered a state job and had hinted that he would step aside for Stumbo. It is also rumored that Rep. Rocky Adkins (D) may be getting his own gig with a new energy dept. If Rocky Adkins resigns this would leave the Majority Leader position open, guess who would get that position. Stumbo 100%. I say Stumbo will be House Speaker for the 2009 off year session. Anyone want to bet on it? Mark Hebert has the story. House Speaker Jody Richards has confirmed that 95th district Rep. Senate District 30 Special Election Update: Democratic Pick Coming Down to
2007-12-16 22:55:00 As we get a bit closer to the official start of the Senate District 30 Special Election , the pick for the Democratic candidate is apparently coming down to the wire. A poll conducted earlier this week will most likely dictate who the Democratic candidate will be. It appears we have 3 candidates in the mix but only two have a shot; former state Rep. Roger Noe, former state Rep. Scott Alexander and former Bell County Attorney Bill Hayes. Noe and Alexander have a chance. Alexander came on strong last week and it appears the Kentucky Republican Party is bit scared of a potential Alexander candidacy, as they filed a complaint earlier this week claiming that Alexander had made illegal campaign expenditures while not being an official candidate. I have been unable to determine where the state GOP received their information and at this time it appears the complaint was only a scare tactic to attempt to prevent a Alexander candidacy. But that is only speculation. Noe has been working fe... More About: Update
