Kentucky Hemlock Trees Threatened with Extinction
2008-04-19 22:24:00
Kentucky’s hemlock trees are threatened with extinction by the hemlock woolly adelgid, a beetle originally from Osaka, Japan which has decimated East Coast hemlocks from Massachusetts to Georgia. It has no natural enemies in North America and, with global warming, may ultimately spread as far north as the Canadian Maritimes.   Massive stands of hemlock have died in both the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia — where an estimated 90 percent of hemlocks have been decimated — and the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, leaving skeletal-appearing standing timber. The aphid-like beetle has been spotted in the Eastern Kentucky counties of Bell, Clay, Harlan, Leslie, Letcher, Pike, Powell and Whitley, as well as in urban areas much farther west in Grayson and Oldham counties. First introduced in the 1920s to the Pacific Northwest and in the 1950s to Washington, DC and Richmond, VA, the woolly adelgid feeds on hemlock needles, depriving trees of nutrients. Left untreate...

Infamous Romanian eBay Hacker Arrested
2008-04-18 18:05:00
An infamous Romanian hacker, who plagued online auction giant eBay for three years by hacking into customer and eBay staff accounts and then taunting eBay by posting customer identity information online at eBay, was arrested in Romania yesterday. Vlad Duiculescu, or Românul Vlad Constantin Duiculescu, 20, is accused by Romanian authorities of “illegally accessing email accounts of eBay users in 2005-2007.” According to a Romanian newspaper, Duiculescu also cost eBay an estimated $3 million, by creating phishing websites which appeared to be eBay but which were lookalikes generated to steal consumers’ credit card numbers and passwords. What brought “Vladut,” as Duiculescu was known, down? Greed. Working in conjunction with Romanian authorities, the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service, eBay managed to contact Vladut and offered to buy his phishing/hacking software. Vladut promptly provided his real address to his potential buyer. On February 28, 2...

Strong Earthquake Tremors Rattle Kentucky and Indiana
2008-04-18 14:28:00
People throughout Kentuckiana, from an area as wide as Evansville, Indiana to Central Kentucky , were awakened at 5:36:57 a.m. this morning by strong earthquake tremors lasting 30 seconds or longer. Chicago skyscrapers shook and tall buildings in Indianapolis swayed, with the quake felt as far away as Grand Rapids and Detroit, Michigan, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (350 miles from the southeastern Illinois epicenter), and Atlanta, Georgia. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 5.4 earthquake was centered seven miles east of New Salem, IL, 66 miles from Evansville, IN. The earthquake, which was 10 miles below the Earth’s surface, rivalled the strongest on record in the area. Later in the morning, the quake was downgraded to a 5.2, still in the intermediate range for damage. No injuries were reported in the Kentuckiana earthquake, although there was structural damage in downtown Louisville at the Cosmopolitan building at 309 W. Kentucky St. between S...

New Waterford, Nova Scotia is a sleepy Canadian fishing village with about 7,000 residents and a picturesque lighthouse. Along with high unemployment, substance abuse plagues the Cape Breton community. Oxycontin is a notable problem, but not the only one. Someone has been sabotaging park benches in the town with dozens of dirty hypodermic needles, some still blood-filled, pointing straight up between the wooden slats. The needles could potentially infect people who sit on them with Hepatitis C or the HIV virus.
