Joe Louis Movie Premieres as Sister Freezes to Death
2008-02-23 22:43:00
As HBO television premieres the documentary Joe Louis : America’s Hero…Betrayed tonight as part of Black History Month, the legendary heavyweight boxing champion’s only surviving sibling, Vunies High, 92, was buried today after freezing to death this week on the lawn of a Southfield, Michigan retirement home. Ms. High, who had Alzheimer’s disease, was found in the snow at the Heatherwood retirement home on Civic Center Drive in Southfield at about 10:30 a.m. on Monday, wearing only pajamas and one slipper. She had been missing since about 8:00 p.m. the night before; her body was found about 100 feet from one of Heatherwood’s exits. It’s believed she may have been out all night without a coat, as subzero temperatures dropped to -12 degrees with an additional -5 wind chill factor. The 162-bed nursing home refused to answer media questions as to why it took 14-1/2 hours to find one patient who was 100 feet from an exit door. High, the first person...

Bill Clinton Guilts Texas Voters
2008-02-22 03:14:00
Speaking from the back of a pickup truck in Victoria, TX while campaigning for his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton , former President Bill Clinton guilted a crowd of about 6,000 people this evening, saying: “Texas and Ohio will determine what happens in the Democratic presidential contest…If you vote for Hillary, she will win here, she will win in Ohio, she will win in Pennsylvania and she will be the nominee for the Democratic Party. It all depends on what you do.”   He said much the same earlier in the day in Beaumont, TX, injecting a strange note of desperation into Billary’s campaign. Indeed, her campaign sent out fundraising e’mails saying that “Everything is on the line” with the Texas primary on March 4. Hillary Clinton has lost 10 primaries in a row and Texas is now a make-or-break situation. Nothing seems to be working for her: Despite her pro-labor rhetoric in the Rust Belt of Ohio, the International Brotherhood of Teamster...

Total Lunar Eclipse and Belgrade, Serbia Riots

Did you see the total lunar eclipse last night? Here in Tiny Town, we had clear skies and were able to watch the whole display. Native Americans call this the Snow Moon, as the heaviest snowfalls usually occur in February. Instead of snow, we’re having an ice storm today. Pajamadeen, being a practical sort, secretly lusts after a generator. That way, she could skip the Waltonesque “back to the basics” phase which is likely to ensue — sitting on the sofa by candlelight, with no heat, devoid of her Internet lifeline and unable to watch DVDs. Poor, pitiful Pajamadeen — Don’t you feel sorry for her? Here’s what the lunar eclipse looked like in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Meanwhile, at least 200,000 protestors gathered in Belgrade , Serbia today to protest U.S. support of Kosovo’s newly-declared independence. Kosovo is considered by most Serbs to be their cultural and religious heartland. They’ve torched the U.S. embassy, which ...

Let?s Swap American Bitch for Saudi Arabia Witch
2008-02-18 17:58:00
Saudi Arabia plans to behead a “witch.” The unfortunate Saudi Arabian woman, Fawza Falih of Quraiyat, was arrested by Saudi Arabia’s “religious police,” the Muttawa. After being detained, beaten and interrogated for 35 days at the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, Falih admitted to being a witch and signed a confession. Witchcraft is considered to be an offense against Islam.

Mark Fiore has another of his classic, barbed videos up, this one poking fun at the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which basically authorizes spying upon Americans and offers telephone companies immunity from prosecution for ratting out their customers. George Bush has been having temper tantrums over the failure of Congress to extend the bill, today repeating his mantra that terrorists are this very minute plotting to do us all in. Watch The Spys Who Love You! here; Snuggly the Bear will explain everything in a jiffy.

FEMA?s Valentine Message: Oops, We?ve Been Poisoning You
2008-02-14 21:14:00
Happy Valentine ’s Day from the good folks at FEMA. Remember the trailers they provided to about 144,000 Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita victims? (No, not the acres of FEMA trailers that sat empty and unused in Arkansas fields, while FEMA paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in storage fees; that’s a different story.) Surprise! The trailers FEMA did supply to hurricane victims are toxic. They give the term “trailer trash” new meaning. The trailers contain high levels of formaldehyde ? a known carcinogen ? and are poisoning people, especially the elderly and the very young. About 40,000 people still live in FEMA hovels.

A Winning Beagle at Westminster, and Some Loser Humans
2008-02-13 16:10:00
Loser of the day was Charlette Marshall-Jones, 44, the Hillsborough County (Tampa, Florida) Sheriff’s Office deputy who unceremoniously dumped quadriplegic Brian Sterner, 32, from his wheelchair onto the floor while booking him into the Orient Road jail for a traffic offense. After Marshall-Jones, a 22-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, finished frisking the more-or-less motionless Sterner, three other deputies assisted her in putting Sterner back in his wheelchair. One of the officers was seen smiling while, for other deputies in the area, it was business as usual.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) of Atlanta, Georgia, mothers and other caregivers infected with the HIV virus who pre-chew (pre-masticate) food for infants can transmit the HIV virus to the children. While the practice is much more common in developing countries, especially African locations, the CDC found three cases in the United States: one in Memphis, Tennessee and two in Miami, Florida.

At last, the big day has arrived: Super Tuesday. Here?s independent artist Sally Anthony?s ?So Long? video. Isn?t it exciting to think that George Bush has less than a year in office left? Anthony?s lyrics say: ?Can I ask you something? Have you changed or are you the same?? Watching the video reminds us of how much things really have changed in less than eight years ? and definitely not for the better. The excitement about today?s primaries springs from a hope for change. Vote with your feet. Vote with your heart. Do the right thing.

New York Giants Win Super Bowl, 17-14
2008-02-04 04:06:00
Touchdown! In one of the greatest upsets in football history, the New York Giants trounced this season’s previously undefeated champions, the New England Patriots , at the Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Arizona tonight, 17-14. The key to the underdog win was defense, and constant pressure on Patriot quarterback Tom Brady. The Big Blue Wrecking Crew got a huge boost from David Tyree, a key offensive player in the Giants’ improbable rise to Super Bowl championship this year. Tyree made a spectacular catch of a pass intended for the Patriots.
