Could the India economic train be slowing?
2008-02-12 07:17:00
Could the fast-moving India growth train finally be slowing? The largest public offering in India, Reliance Power, had a dismal first trading day of trading Monday, with its shares falling 17 percent below its price at offer last month when investors bought all available stock in less than a minute.Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange's benchmark Sensex index closed down 4.78 percent, making it the worst major performer in depressed Asian markets.Reliance Power's disappointing market debut followed a steady drip of slower growth projections, higher-than-expected inflation figures and falling export data released in recent days. Several initial public offerings have been pulled in India in the past few weeks as once-resilient investors rethink their commitment to India's volatile stock markets. In a sign that consumer spending may need a lift, the largest Indian bank, State Bank of India, cut its main lending rate a quarter of a point Monday, following recent moves by other big loca...

Mercy chance give to goa government
2008-01-18 13:02:00
Despite Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat virtually throwing up his hands, coalition partner NCP on Friday expressed confidence that the crisis-ridden government will survive."The government will survive. We will find some solution," NCP General Secretary Praful Patel told reporters soon after returning here from Panaji where he had been rushed along with another party leader D P Tripathi on a troubleshooting mission.Patel said since the party MLAs, whose defiance has plunged the Congress-led Government in the state into crisis, are talking to the NCP leadership and have "not walked out", some solution appeared possible. At the same time, he said, "some commitments" that have been made to some legislators earlier have to be honoured. He, however, did not elaborate on the commitments. But Patel's optimism was in sharp contrast to Kamat's comment that God will save his government. Links-via-The times of India

We require a continuous supply of water. There will now be a delay of thirty minutes by which time the fire would have started again,'' said a fire fighter. The heat and smoke generated inside the building by a 60-hour long fire has made it difficult for firemen to reach the source and effectively use carbon d...

BCCI meets to take action on Australian tour
2008-01-08 07:42:00
The BCCI working committee will hold an emergency meeting here this evening to decide on whether to continue the controversy-marred cricket tour of Australia if the ICC does not respond favourably to its appeal on Harbhajan Singh's ban.The committee will deliberate at length the ban imposed on Harbhajan for allegedly racially abusing Australian all rounder Andrew Symonds and the umpiring blunders which cost India the second Test in Sydney."It all depends on what response we get from the ICC. We will discuss all the matters before finalising our response," a top BCCI official told PTI on condition on anonymity. The BCCI will also discuss the fallout, if indeed, they take the extreme step of abandoning the tour.India could risk a hefty $ 2 million (approx Rs 7.85 crore) fine from the ICC if it refuses to continue with the tour. The BCCI, however, may not be too concerned about the financial implications of pulling out of the tour but it would take into account the bigger ramifications ...

Gurgaon shootout repeated again in MP
2008-01-04 12:19:00
Less than a month after the shocking killing of a Class VIII student by two of his classmates in a Gurgaon public school, a 16-year-old Class X boy on Wednesday shot a student junior to him with his father's pistol near a village school in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. This murder by a schoolboy, seen together with the Gurgaon killing and the murder of a student in Noida by his former classmates last month, shows a disturbing rise in violence involving students which until now was reported only from the US.Reports coming from Satna say that the 16-year-old suspect is a student of a government school while the victim, Dharmu Koli, was 15 years old and junior to him in school. The senior student apparently shot Dharmu with a country-made pistol when he was returning home after taking an exam. The grievously injured boy died while being taken to a nearby hospital. The incident occurred at 1pm at Chor-Bari village in north Madhya Pradesh. The 16-year-old boy was going to school, when...
India back in the contest of Laxman's game
2008-01-03 10:13:00
VVS Laxman finally got India 's batting on this Australian tour off the ground, with an enthusiastic and entertaining century, and Rahul Dravid once again battled hard in dour fashion. Dravid spent time in the middle with Laxman but both fell in the dying moments of the second day, handing the initiative back to Australia. The much-needed Indian resistance spanned almost two sessions, but it was Australia who had won the first, pushing their first-innings score to 463 thanks mainly to an unbeaten 162 from Andrew Symonds.Laxman in particular was in a perfect mood, punishing anything that was too straight or too full. His customary elegant wristy play ensured that even deliveries short of a good length were kept down, and the boundaries came all round the park. He did survive one close call for lbw early on against Lee, and was the beneficiary of some fielding largesse, but on a day like this, where he batted with panache against an attack that has dominated India's batsmen, these bl...

Indian Travel Trade booms All 2007
2007-12-31 07:56:00
There's nothing quite like the mindless, but conviction addled momentum of a heavy bowling ball that knocks the pins clean. It's similar to the liquidity fuelled heydays of the capital markets, which, having ebbed a bit, are now making a comeback. Yes, sometimes bare knuckled speed can take adversity itself by surprise. But, at some point, the pace proves unsustainable, which needn't be deterring as long as the pace doesn't abate altogether. That is as general a description this reporter can put across of the Indian travel trade's inevitably concluded year. The preceding score months have witnessed serial, sweeping changes met with an admixture of objection and wide-eyed opportunism. While change itself is not new, its impact is variable and its permanent implications this year is straining eyebrows.Travel Trade For travel agents, 2007 has been a phase of urgency coupled with action and some important victories. A year that began on a high note with the promise of renewed growt...

Buddha looks to ease Nandigram's pain
2007-12-27 12:05:00
After his party recaptured Nand igram in early November, West Bengal chief minister Buddha deb Bhattacharjee on Wednesday did his bit to regain political control that the CPM had conceded in the region in the past one year. The CM did this by literally promising the moon to the local folk, regardless of their political affiliation. The chief minister?s promises are being seen as the CPM?s and the state government?s joint effort to woo the hearts and minds of the people in the run-up to the 2008 panchayat elections. Mr Bhattacharjee?s 30-minute-long talk is also being viewed as a desperate attempt to revive his clean image as an ?impartial chief minister? who can easily deliver justice to people by positioning himself above the party whip.Addressing a well-attended gathering at Tengua in Nandigram on Wednesday, Mr Bhattacharjee exhorted Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) leaders ? who had been spearheading the agitation for the past one year ? to dismantle the forum and constitute...

Now we will review the situation. But what everyone must understand is that none of us ever expected such a thing to happen inside the school," Yadav added. 2007-10-03 12:09:00
India's technology could wave high after a new door opened after nuclear deal signed up with US. "It would be really a helping hand for economic potential, External Affairs and financial issues too" Pranab Mukherjee said."If India is to realise its economic potential, it will also need alternative sources of clean energy. Foremost among them is nuclear energy," Mukherjee said on Monday in a talk on India's Foreign Policy and Future India-US Relations at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York."Investments are now also flowing in both directions. In terms of the global economy, India and the United States have shared concerns on critical issues, such as energy security. Both countries are, for instance, interested in the stabilisation of oil and gas prices at reasonable levels and in reduced dependence on fossil fuels," he noted. In advanced areas like nuclear energy and space exploration, a sound indigenous base has been built that enables India not only to absorb high technol...
