North Koreans On Video Helping Syria Build Reactor
2008-04-24 11:22:00
Remember when Israel blew the crap out of a non-descript building in Syria and nobody said anything about it? Well, that’s a bit of exaggeration. There were rumors at first, then Syria came out and admitted it. Now video surfaces of North Koreans helping out around the facility: A video taken inside a secret Syrian facility last summer convinced the Israeli government and the Bush administration that North Korea was helping to construct a reactor similar to one that produces plutonium for North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, according to senior U.S. officials who said it would be shared with lawmakers today. The officials said the video of the remote site, code-named Al Kibar by the Syrians, shows North Koreans inside. It played a pivotal role in Israel’s decision to bomb the facility late at night last Sept. 6, a move that was publicly denounced by Damascus but not by Washington. Sources familiar with the video say it also shows that the Syrian reactor core’s d...

Obama Takes No Oil Money?Except for that $46,000 He Took Last Month
2008-04-24 10:57:00
His ads say he does not take that dirty oil money, but facts are stubborn things: Sen. Barack Obama continued accepting donations from oil company executives and employees last month even as he aired ads in which he stated he took no oil company money, his campaign finance reports show. Obama has taken at least $263,000 from oil company executives, family members and employees since entering the presidential race last year, including $46,000 last month. At least $140,000 has come in chunks of between $1,000 and $2,300, the maximum permitted under federal law. I don’t care that he takes money for oil folks. I care that he tries to pull the wool over people’s eyes and get them to believe he is something he isn’t. “Since the gas lines of the ’70s, Democrats and Republicans have talked about energy independence but nothing’s changed — except now Exxon’s making $40 billion a year and we’re paying $3.50 for gas. I’m Barack Oba...

The 20 Worst Comic-Book Movies Ever?
2008-04-24 06:21:00
EW.com has published it’s list of the 20 worst comic-book movies ever. Here are their picks… He’s Happy To See You Ghost Rider (2007) The Shadow (1994) Barb Wire (1996) Catwoman (2004) Brenda Starr (1992) The Phantom (1996) Daredevil (2003) / Elektra (2005) Tank Girl (1995) Fantastic Four (2005) Sheena (1984) The Punisher (2004) Supergirl (1984) Barbarella (1968) Howard The Duck (1986) Steel (1987) Swamp Thing (1982) Batman & Robin (1997) The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) Superman IV: Quest For Peace (1987) Judge Dredd (1995) First of all, that’s 21 movies. Second of all, not all of these were comic books. Third of all, whoever wrote this list is retarded. Sure, Howard the Duck was a movie that never should have been made. Batman & Robin wasn’t the greatest… but one of the worst? Batsuit nipples aside, it was an entertaining flick. Not worthy of being on this list. The real mind-number, for me at least, is The Pun...

Missing Man Found Dressed Like Doctor With Dead Deer In Stolen Ambulance
2008-04-24 05:45:00
Sometimes you see a headline, and suddenly… your mind is blown. A man reported missing from a Florida hospital was found in North Carolina dressed like a doctor and driving a stolen ambulance with a dead deer wedged in the back, authorities said. If I only had a dollar for every time that has happened to me. Holliman was admitted to a North Carolina hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Police said they would decide whether to charge Holliman after that evaluation is complete. No word yet on how this will effect the race between Hillary and Barack. Washington To China: Stop Giving Zimbabwe Arms
2008-04-23 06:52:00
The United States is asking China to not only stop sending Mugabe arms shipments, but to take back the one they sent: Beijing was told “to refrain from making additional shipments and, if possible, to bring this one back,” department spokesperson Tom Casey said, referring to a Chinese ship loaded with arms intended for Zimbabwe and now reportedly headed to Angola. Washington has also asked Angola and Zimbabwe’s other neighbours, including South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia, not to allow the ship, identified as the An Yue Jiang, to dock or offload the weapons. “We don’t think that under the present circumstances given the current political crisis in Zimbabwe that now is the time for anyone to be increasing the number of weapons and armaments available in that country,” Casey said. Why are we even dealing with this? What business is it of ours if China sells Zimbabwe arms or not? Mugabe is a ruthless thug, but I don’t know that it is an...

10,000 Year Old Tree Squashes Scientific Consensus
2008-04-22 22:13:00
It was warmer 10,000 years ago than the scientific consensus thought it was. Much warmer. A Spruce tree that took root just following the last Ice Age shows that ten millenniums ago, it was warmer than it is today: The world’s oldest tree has been found in Sweden, a tenacious spruce that first took root just after the end of the last ice age, more than 9,500 years ago. The tree has rewritten the history of the climate in the region, revealing that it was much warmer at that time and the ice had disappeared earlier than thought. Remember, there was a scientific consensus on this, just like there is a scientific consensus on “global warming.” The fact is, the consensus was wrong: It had been thought that this region was still in the grip of the ice age but the tree shows it was much warmer, even than today, he says. ?Spruces are the species that can best give us insight about climate change,? he says. The summers 9,500 years ago were warmer than today, though the...

Muslim Calls for World to Switch to Mecca Time
2008-04-22 02:11:00
Muslim “scientists” called for the world to abandon Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Instead, it is time to switch to “Mecca Time” (insert obligatory MC Hammer reference here): The call was issued at a conference held in the Gulf state of Qatar under the title: Mecca, the Centre of the Earth, Theory and Practice. One geologist argued that unlike other longitudes, Mecca’s was in perfect alignment to magnetic north. He said the English had imposed GMT on the rest of the world by force when Britain was a big colonial power, and it was about time that changed. Yes, instead, the entire Earth should be set to Islam ’s most holy site. There’s not really anything more to this, is there? But wait folks, there’s more. Because Mecca Time comes with a free Mecca Watch: The watch is said to rotate anti-clockwise and is supposed to help Muslims determine the direction of Mecca from any point on Earth. That’s right folks! The new Mecca watch...

Objective Journalism is a ?Fantasy?
2008-04-22 01:41:00
I didn’t say it. Someone much more of an authority on the subject of journalism said it. In defending the doctoring of the most famous photo from World War II, “Managing Editor Richard Stengel said the cover art was part of the publication?s global warming advocacy…” He continued: Stengel defied the traditional notion that journalists should be unbiased. ?I didn?t go to journalism school,? Stengel said. ?But this notion that journalism is objective, or must be objective is something that has always bothered me ? because the notion about objectivity is in some ways a fantasy. I don?t know that there is as such a thing as objectivity.? Stengel supported his claim by stating the role of journalists is not to ask questions, but answer them. So, newspapers are not there to ask questions, but to answer them. There is a word for that. He went on to say that journalists just make up standards as they go along. ?I don?t even know what rules there have been all alo...

How Much Does DC Spend Per Student in Their Government Schools?
2008-04-22 01:20:00
According to WikiAnswers, the national average cost for public school students is “$9866 per year.” I hate answers that aren’t referenced, so I kept looking for the answer to the question: What is the national average cost per student in public school? From a July 2004 article, Well Education Weak noted recently that an estimated $501.3 billion in taxpayer money is spent for education in the United States. Crunching the numbers, we found that’s an average of over $10,000 per K-12 student, and that it takes four taxpayers to raise this amount. So now we are up to around $10,000 per kid. Any other stats? In Virginia, Prince William County “has a projected annual cost per pupil of $10,496, compared with $12,917 in Fairfax, $12,461 in Loudoun, $17,500 in Arlington and $17,968 in Alexandria.” Pocket change. According to the Washington Post: We’re often told that public schools are underfunded. In the District, the spending figure cited most ...

Harry Reid Wants $45,000,000 for MagLev Train to Disneyland
2008-04-21 10:36:00
While Nevada faces “a multi-billion shortfall in basic highway, bus and other transportation needs,” Harry Reid is earmarking $45 million dollars for a train to Disneyland : Start talking about magnetic levitation trains and people quickly fall into two categories: dreamy-eyed futurists whose eyes widen with the promise of 300 mph travel or dismissive cynics who see the next boondoggle heading down the track. When it comes to building a maglev train between Las Vegas and Southern California, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has remained a believer. This week, he is risking the wrath of the Senate anti-pork czars to secure $45 million to push the train project along. Who wouldn’t want a 300 mile per hour train in Southern California? So what reason does land baron Harry Reid give for this train to So Cal? Pure show: ?If it?s going to be really done in a big way, a Las Vegas way, the magnetic levitation would be the way to do it,? Reid said. ?We could bring someone...

25 Democrat Quotes I Actually Agree With
2008-04-18 13:52:00
On the Constitution “I consider the foundation of the Constitution as laid on this ground: That ‘all powers not delegated to the United States, by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States or to the people’ (10th Amendment). To take a single step beyond the boundaries thus specifically drawn around the powers of Congress , is to take possession of a boundless field of power, no longer susceptible to any definition.” - Thomas Jefferson* On Government Spending “To avoid the necessity of a permanent debt and its inevitable consequences, I have advocated and endeavored to carry into effect the policy of confining the appropriations for the public service to such objects only as are clearly with the constitutional authority of the Federal Government.” - Martin Van Buren “Under our scheme of government the waste of public money is a crime against the citizen…” - Grover Cleveland “Once the co...

Republicans Want to Rein in Spending. No, Really.
2008-04-17 11:00:00
Remember when the Repubican party was known as the party of fiscal conservatism? Well, they are trying at least: The latest effort to restore fiscal responsibility comes in the form of a Spending Limit Constitutional Amendment. The Republican Study Committee (RSC) is targeting out of control federal spending in order to equalize federal government spending with national economic growth. Their goal is to decrease the burden on American families, so that the budget does not increase more than the collective incomes of those families. I would have been happier with “so that the budget does not increase.” For me, here is the saddest paragraph in the article: About ten members of the RSC represented the amendment at the press conference, including earmark reform leader Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and RSC Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Tex.). Hensarling reminded listeners that ?as bad as Republicans are, Democrats are a thousand times worse,” not only on spending but by raisin...

Well, Doctor?s Orders

For men of all ages, you now have an excuse: Men could reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer through regular masturbation, researchers suggest. Define “regular.” When it comes to cancer, you can’t be too careful: They say cancer-causing chemicals could build up in the prostate if men do not ejaculate regularly. And they say sexual intercourse may not have the same protective effect because of the possibility of contracting a sexually transmitted infection, which could increase men’s cancer risk. Australian researchers questioned over 1,000 men who had developed prostate cancer and 1,250 who had not about their sexual habits. They found those who had ejaculated the most between the ages of 20 and 50 were the least likely to develop the cancer. The protective effect was greatest while the men were in their 20s. Men who ejaculated more than five times a week were a third less likely to develop prostate cancer later in life. Well, you can’...

Is This What a Supreme Court Justice Is Supposed to Do?
2008-04-17 09:44:00
Justice John Paul Stevens, noted liberal member of the United States Supreme Court , was a dissenting voice in yesterday’s ruling that Kentucky’s death penalty was fine and dandy. In his dissent, he wrote: “[Capital punishment is a] pointless and needless extinction of life with only marginal contributions to any discernible social or public purposes.” He also wrote: “the risk of executing innocent defendants can be entirely eliminated by treating any penalty more severe than life imprisonment without the possibility of parole as constitutionally excessive.” It seems to me that he was just supposed to write about the Constitutionality of the act, but he has given his personal opinion, and maybe a way for it to be stopped. This isn’t about whether capital punishment is right or wrong, but whether Supreme Court Justices should be activists for a particular point of view. I think Justice Stevens is out of line and once again stepping outside...

MSNBC: ?This was not a good debate for Obama, period.?
2008-04-17 09:07:00
I didn’t watch, so I will have to rely on those who did. Chuck Todd did, and said Obama had a very bad night: In the first 40 minutes of the debate, most of the questioning was on Obama’s negatives (except for a lone Bosnia-sniper question to Clinton) and that’s what helped create what was a near disastrous performance by Obama in those first 40 minutes. He was weak in a lot of his answers on his personal negatives. (Did he really compare Tom Coburn to a one-time ’60s radical/terrorist?) Clinton, meanwhile, piled on, particularly (and surprisingly, actually) on Ayers. While I’m not sure if Clinton’s piling on ever is good for her in the long run — see her current poll standing — it created some post-debate issues for Obama. Many news organizations will feel compelled to do Ayers stories in the next few days. While some may question the fairness and relevancy of the Ayers issue, it’s not going to be good for Obama. So Sean Hanni...

Obama in His Own Words
2008-04-16 20:50:00
One thing I like to do when I write is take the individual drops of rain that can be dismissed and bring them all together to show the flood for what it really is. I did that with “Tell Me Again the Left Supports the Troops” and in “Barack Obama ?s Doubletalk, Falsehoods and Outright Lies.” Where one of these things might be dismissed, when you see the entirety of the thing, it brings a whole new perspective on the subject. John Hawkins has done something similar with the comments of Barack Obama, his pastor and his wife. He has collected a bunch of quotes from those three, giving the reader who may have dismissed one or two as they made the news a new perspective on them. When you see them all together, it puts his perspective of America and Americans in a news light. Obama owes his candidacy to his race
2008-04-16 20:00:00
Oh yeah, Geraldine said it first, and I backed her up on it, but this time, it didn’t come from a white woman, or a white man. It came from the founder of Black Entertainment Television, billionaire businessman Bob Johnson: “What I believe Geraldine Ferraro meant is that if you take a freshman senator from Illinois called `Jerry Smith’ and he says I’m going to run for president, would he start off with 90 percent of the black vote?” Johnson said. “And the answer is, probably not.” “Geraldine Ferraro said it right. The problem is, Geraldine Ferraro is white. This campaign has such a hair-trigger on anything racial it is almost impossible for anybody to say anything.” This guy is obviously a sell-out, an Uncle Tom, a “house negro” for the Clintons, right? I mean, I fully expect to see him called these things by the Obama tons across the blogosphere. Or, is he just telling it like it really is? The fact is, Obama has d...

Louisiana Senate Passes a Bill that Allows Sex Offenders to be Castrated
2008-04-16 18:00:00
I admit, I had to do a double take on the headline of this story when I was scanning my Google Reader, but there it was, “La. Senate Passes Sex Offender Castration Bill “: BATON ROUGE, La. ? The most serious sex crimes should be punishable by castration, with drugs or surgery, the Louisiana Senate voted on Tuesday. The bill by Sen. Nick Gautreaux, D-Meaux, would give judges the option of imposing chemical castration on those convicted of sex crimes including aggravated rape, simple rape and indecent behavior with a juvenile. Chemical castration would be mandatory on second offenses, and the offender would have the option of choosing physical castration instead. Senators voted 32-3 to send the measure to the House. Chemical castration is where the convicted takes a drug that reduces his sexual urges, or is supposed to anyway. The drug can be countered with another drug, but the bill says the offender can’t take it, so there’s no chance of that happening. The ...

Dehydrated Mexican teen rescued from AZ desert
2008-04-16 17:39:00
This is pretty regular news for the part of the country that I live in, but I think it’s important to bring it up from time to time so the rest of you don’t forget what’s happening along our southern border. A Mexican teen found in the remote southern Arizona desert with extreme dehydration was rescued by U.S. Border Patrol agents. Border Patrol spokesman Mike Scioli said the rescue was triggered by a resident who called Tohono O’odham police, who then called the Border Patrol. Agents found the 17-year-old boy from Chiapas in a remote area of the desert where he had been reported missing. Scioli said the boy was unable to walk because he was suffering from exposure to the elements and extreme dehydration. The teen was taken by helicopter to a Tucson hospital, where he is recovering. Monday’s high temperature of 95 degrees was about 14 degrees above average for this time of year, according to the National Weather Service. Border Patrol agents in the Tucs...

The World At 350 ppm CO2
2008-04-16 12:00:00
As you all know, the Earth is destined to erupt in flames anytime now, mainly because of our habit of taking carbon out of the soil and putting it in the air. Right now, there is an atmosphereic concentraion of carbon dioxide of 385 ppm. Let me put that another way, currently carbon dioxide makes up 0.0385% of the atmosphere. Scary, isn’t it? Cato@Liberty notes that James Hansen told Congres in 1988 that 350 ppm was dangerous, but now is saying it is the safe level, what humanity should aim for. Is the world better off today compared to 1988? Let?s check: Life expectancy in developing countries was 4-5 years lower in 1988 than it is today (62 years rather than the current 67 years). Even in the US, it increased from 74.9 years in 1988 to 77.8 years in 2004! Compared to today, at least 15 more infants out of every 1,000 in developing countries died in 1988 before reaching their first birthdays. In industrialized countries, the infant mortality rate dropped from 9 to 5. ...
