Obama Doesn?t Take Money from Lobbyists, Right? Not So Much?
2008-04-16 07:58:00 Obama says he doesn’t take lobbysists money. He said it in this “Nothing’s Changed” ad, where he promised to charge a windfall tax on oil companies. He’s said it over and over again, that he will not be associated with lobbyists. So why are 31 of 38 fundraisers members of a law firm that, gasp, lobbies in Washington: Barack Obama often boasts he is “the only candidate who isn’t taking a dime from Washington lobbyists,” yet his fundraising team includes 38 members of law firms that were paid $138 million last year to lobby the federal government, records show. Those lawyers, including 10 former federal lobbyists, have pledged to raise at least $3.5 million for the Illinois senator’s presidential race. Employees of their firms have given Obama’s campaign $2.26 million, a USA TODAY analysis of campaign finance data shows. Thirty-one of the 38 are law firm partners, who typically receive a share of their firm’s lobbying... More About: Money , Blog , Obama , Election
Thoughts and Prayers for Sen. Arlen Spector
2008-04-15 12:30:00 US Senator Arlen Specter announced Tuesday that he had a recurrence of cancer which he had fought in 2005 but said he would still campaign for re-election in November. Specter, an influential 78-year-old Republican lawmaker representing the northeastern state of Pennsylvania since 1980, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. He underwent treatment for the disease three years ago and was declared in remission after six months of chemotherapy. (Source.) I wouldn’t wish cancer on my worst enemy. If We Had the FairTax, Today Would Just Be Tuesday
2008-04-15 12:00:00 Alexander Hamilton was not in favor of an income tax, but favored a tax on comsumption. He felt it would be more difficult to raise a consumption tax to confiscatory levels than an income tax. In Federalist No. 21, Hamilton wrote: It is a signal advantage of taxes on articles of consumption, that they contain in their own nature a security against excess. They prescribe their own limit; which cannot be exceeded without defeating the end proposed, that is, an extension of the revenue. With the consumption tax, the citizen chooses to pay taxes based on the amount of purchase they make. An income tax can be raised or lowered, compelling the citizen to pay as much as the government demands. As you know, we have an income tax in America, due on that most dreaded day of the year, April 15th. Today is April 15th. If we passed the FairTax, today would just be Tuesday . The Fair Tax is a bill in the United States Congress that would repeal the 16th Amendment and eliminate all federal inc... More About: Blog , Column , Duane
McCain Blames Greed for Recession
2008-04-15 04:15:00 Here he is, folks. The conservative Republican candidate for president, blaming the private sector for the recession: Sen. John McCain this morning said “greedy” Wall Street investors are partly to blame for what he said is probably an economic recession the nation is now suffering. “There has to be a modification of the greedy behavior of some of these people,” he said, using the word “greedy” repeatedly in remarks to the Associated Press annual meeting at the Washington Convention Center today. Moron. As Freeper Aristotelian said: “Greed ” doesn’t cause recessions. More often than not, failed governmental policies — e.g., monetary, regulatory, fiscal, etc. — are to blame for an economic setback. In this case, the blame lies with poor money management by the Fed — under both Greenspan and Bernanke — and the effects of federal rules on subprime mortgage lending — notably, the 1977 Community Reinvestm... Army Presents Iraqi School with Soccer Uniforms
2008-04-15 03:51:00 Soccer isn’t that big a deal in America, but in Iraq it is. Especially when you consider the Iraq soccer teams recent championship in the Asian Cup. Our soldiers over in Iraq noticed this love of soccer, and took some action: Soldiers from 3rd Platoon, Company A, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, gave the local secondary school a boost in pursuit of their favorite sport. First Lt. Kevin Brown, a native of Indianapolis, along with members of his platoon, presented the headmaster of the Jurf Secondary School a complete set of soccer uniforms; enough to outfit a 16-man team, including a goalie and referee uniform. This is very important to the image of America in Iraq, and to counter anti-American sentiment. Plus, it is a very generous and giving thing to do: The platoon left the uniforms with the headmaster and returned the following day to take a team photo. Enthusiasm beamed on the faces of the young players as they hur... More About: Military , Presents , Soccer , Blog
Shell Oil Tells Europe: ?We don?t want to threaten draconian measures?
2008-04-15 03:38:00 What happens when you make it too painful financially for a company to do business in your country? They leave: Jeroen van der Veer, the chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell , has given warning that a proposed Europe an Union scheme to force companies to pay for carbon emissions permits previously handed out free threatens to destroy Europe?s petrochemicals and refining industry. Mr van der Veer told The Times that the EU needed to be careful not to trigger an exodus of European jobs and investment offshore with no net reduction in global emissions. The problem is that the European Union is trying to cut carbon dioxide emissions by increasing the cost of emissions permits to oil refineries, airlines and other sectors. From 2013 to 2020, the EU plans to increase the cost by 100%. And of course, this is all in the name of halting climate change. Peter Madden, chief executive of Forum for the Future, the sustainable development charity, dismissed the warnings of van der Veer, saying:... More About: Blog , Tells , Draconian
Gore Admits Making Money Off Global Warming Hoax
2008-04-14 22:45:00 In my blockbuster article, 10 Reasons to Doubt Global Warming is Man-Made (Part 1), I listed money as the number three reason for doubting global warming. There is a ton of money in this scam, and at the forefront is Generation Investment Management: Generation Investment Management LLP is a London-based investment management firm with an investment style that blends traditional equity research with a focus on sustainability factors, including social and environmental responsibility and corporate governance. Generation has built a global research platform to integrate sustainability research into fundamental equity analysis. The firm focuses on the economic, environmental, social, and governance risks and opportunities that can materially affect a company’s ability to sustain profitability and deliver returns. The company invests money in Big Green. And Al Gore is a big part of it. Up until now, he hasn’t said a whole lot about it, but now he has added it to his littl... More About: Money , Blog

Testicular Cancer Diagnosed As A Tummy Ache - Welcome to Government Run Hea
2008-04-14 20:46:00 The future of American medicine under HillaryCare or ObamaCare: Paul Baxter knew he was unwell when he suddenly developed severe pains in his stomach. ‘I felt like someone was stabbing me. The pain was so bad that I was crying,’ he recalls. He was baffled and worried. But his GP put his mind at rest by insisting that it was a bad stomach upset and prescribed some strong anti-indigestion pills. Seven months later Baxter, 44, a travel agent, learnt the truth. He had testicular cancer, which by then had already spread to his stomach and chest. Despite Baxter suffering serious weight loss and constant tiredness - classic symptoms of cancer - his GP, another doctor at the surgery and staff at his local hospital in Runcorn, Cheshire, had all failed to diagnose his condition. Just an abberation right? This can be something that happens all the time. The fact is, they don’t know how often it happens. They don’t keep track of that kind of thing. But there are som... Bill Harrison: Honey, I Lost My Job ? Now Bring Me My Bible, My Rifle and
2008-04-14 18:36:00 Newsvine’s Bill Harrison addresses the comments Barry Hussein Obama made in San Francisco, where he said, “it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustration.” Bill writes: God save the Republic from Democrats auditioning to serve as psychoanalyst-in-chief to the nation’s body politic. To hear Democrats tell the tale it’s all gloom, doom and various pathologies brought about now by a generation of alleged GOP economic neglect. As Carter’s speech points out, Obama is but the latest Democrat to talk down to and insult people who might have religious faith, be concerned about Second Amendment rights or have reservations over the effects of illegal immigration on this country’s society and economy. Who Is Bob Barr? He Could Be McCain?s Worst Nightmare
2008-04-14 16:52:00 In 2000, Ralph Nader took just enough votes from Al Gore in New Hampshire to give the state’s four electoral votes to George Bush, who won the election by three. And in Florida, Nader took 97,488 votes away from Gore. Bush won Florida by only 537 votes. Nader cost Gore the 2000 election. It is also argued that Ross Perot was the reason George Bush lost his bid for re-election to Bill Clinton. Perot ran as a third party candidate in 1992, and was the most successful third party candidate in history. In 2008, Bob Barr may be the Nader or Perot for John McCain. But who is he? Bob Barr is a former Republican turned life member of the Libertarian party. He was a part of the Republican Revolution with Newt Gingrich, representing the 7th District of Georgia in the U. S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003. And he’s probably going to run for president as a Libertarian. Bob Barr has a serious conservative history. Ledger Set to Steal the Show
2008-04-13 05:30:00 Reports are coming in now that Heath Ledger ’s performance as the Joker will be his best performance ever. I said last week that I thought he nailed it, and that was just from the trailers. It has to be something terrific when you have Michael Caine saying the following: Veteran Michael Caine has also spoken highly of Ledger’s Joker portrayal. “Jack (Nicholson) was like a really scary old, nasty uncle with a funny face,” Caine said. “Heath’s like the most murderous psychopath you’ve ever seen on the screen.” Wow! The Joker was cool when Jack Nicholson played him, but he was still too campy. The Joker is a very dark character. Heath himself said before he died: “He’s just out of control - no empathy, he’s a sociopath, a psychotic, mass-murdering clown,” I like the way they did this character. Hopefully, this isn’t a case where I build up the movie too much, to where I can only be let down due to my hi... More About: Show , Blog , Steal
WORM , or ?What Obama Really Meant?
2008-04-13 04:48:00 Frank J. over at IMAO has the possible acronym of the year: WORM - What Obama Really Meant I have this feeling were going to see a lot more WORMs issued by Obama supporters and Obama himself… What sickens me is that the Obamatons don’t even question the WORM corrections. Instead, you have the Obama myrmidons blaming others for what Barack says. For example, Warner Todd Houston writes about “Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post?s ?The Fix? blog.” Chris “actually turned comments by Barack Obama from a dissing of ?small town? 2008-04-12 21:50:00 I have talked about ethanol time and again on the blog, not only about the subsidies for ethanol, not only about the fact that it is a bigger pollutant than gasoline, but ethanol is causing food shortages and an increase in food prices. Investor’s Business Daily has an article that outlines what happens when the government decides pay to burn food for fuel: In America, the federal government pushes the production of ethanol from corn with a rich mix of tax incentives and protectionism. Refiners get a 51-cent tax credit for every gallon of ethanol they produce and are shielded from cheaper imported ethanol with a 54-cent-a-gallon tariff. The result, totally by design, is that a huge swath of the U.S. corn crop that would otherwise go to food for people and animals is diverted to ethanol. The National Corn Growers Association says 2.3 billion bushels of corn, or nearly a fifth of U.S. production, went into ethanol in 2007. That’s up 28% in just one year. It also is 18% of... U.N. Appointed Israel Hater Commissions 9/11 Truther Hearings UPDATED: Tr
2008-04-11 17:33:00 Remember back on the March 31 podcast, we discussed a story by Gateway Pundit in the Blog lines chapter. The story was about the appointment of Richard Falk, an Israel hater and Ayatollah Khomeini supporter, “as special investigator on Israeli actions in the territories for a six-year term.” Falk, in his academic writing, has already stated that a Palestinian holocaust was in the making. Yitzhak Levanon, ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, spoke against Falk’s appointment in an address to the council on Wednesday. “In a recent article, [Falk] stated that he did not think it to be “an irresponsible overstatement to associate the treatment of Palestinians with the criminalized Nazi record of collective atrocity,” Levanon said. “He has taken part in a UN fact-finding mission which determined that suicide bombings were a valid method of ’struggle,’” Levanon said. Who Else is Against the Colombian Free Trade Agreement?
2008-04-11 04:35:00 Madam Speaker has plans to block the Colombian Free Trade Agreement : Defying the White House, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday the House will change its rules to avoid a required vote this year on a free-trade agreement with Colombia. Pelosi, D-Calif., said the change would remove the timetable that says Congress must take up trade bills within 90 legislative days after they are received from the White House. She intended to bring the rule proposal to the full House on Thursday. “The president took action” in submitting the deal Tuesday, she said. “I will take mine tomorrow.” The Colombia deal was a leading topic as President Bush and congressional leaders discussed the economy and other issues at the White House Wednesday afternoon. Pelosi, emerging from the meeting, said their message to the president was that the main concern must be the living standards of Americans and they could not consider the free trade pact “unless we address the econ... McCain Catches Up
2008-04-11 04:22:00 The Democratic battle has allowed John McCain to catch up with his election foes and is now essentially tied with them: McCain is benefiting from a bounce since he clinched the GOP nomination a month ago. The four-term Arizona senator has moved up in matchups with each of the Democratic candidates, particularly Obama. An AP-Ipsos poll taken in late February had Obama leading McCain 51-41 percent. The current survey, conducted April 7-9, had them at 45 percent each. McCain leads Obama among men, whites, Southerners, married women and independents. Clinton led McCain, 48-43 percent, in February. The latest survey showed the New York senator with 48 percent support to McCain’s 45 percent. Factoring in the poll’s margin of error of 3.1 percentage points, Clinton and McCain are statistically tied. The rest of the article is filled with really interesting statistics and demographics. Need Some Fighter Jet Parts? Check eBay!
2008-04-11 04:17:00 It turns out, you can get all kinds of stuff on eBay, and Craigslist. Stuff like fighter jet parts, CBR suits and other items the American government really doesn’t want to fall into the hands of our enemies. The Government Accounting Office bought all this on the Internet: Using undercover identities, investigators purchased a dozen defense-related items on the auction site eBay and the online network Craigslist from January 2007 through last month and received the items “no questions asked.” The Defense Department regards much of the stolen equipment to be on the U.S. Munitions List, meaning there are restrictions on their overseas sales, the Government Accountability Office said Thursday. The equipment could land in international brokers’ hands or be transferred overseas, said the GAO, Congress’ investigative arm. “Many of the sensitive items we purchased could have been used directly against our troops and allies, or reverse engineered to de... McCain Takes a Stand on Chinese Olympic Ceremonies
2008-04-10 19:20:00 He wouldn’t go. Nor should Bush . It’s a sad day when I am more in line with Nancy Pelosi, than with a Republican president: “I would say to the Chinese , ‘look, clean up your act here.’ … Unless they change something pretty quickly, I wouldn’t go to the opening ceremonies.” That was presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain this morning on ABC-TV’s The View. (USA TODAY’s David Jackson reporting.) He joins Democratic senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama in saying that unless China ends its crackdown on protesters in Tibet and takes other steps to improve its human rights record, then it would not be appropriate for the president of the United States to be at the opening ceremonies of this summer’s Beijing Olympic s. China’s “crackdown” is a brutal reminder that they are nothing out of the ordinary for Communist regimes. Bush needs to stay away from the opening ceremonie...

Protest Illegal Immigration and Get A Beating - In High School
2008-04-09 19:00:00 I think this might have been an assignment I actually turned in on time. Make a protest sign for an issue or against an issue, and bring it to school. This should end well: It was an assignment for history class–to make a protest sign for or against an issue, and Melanie said she chose illegal immigration. Her sign read, “If you love our nation, stop illegal immigration.” Somehow, Melanie said the sign got passed around lunch and angered a group of Latino students. Don’t these students know that Latinos getting angry at an illegal immigration sign is, like, reverse racism or something. I think they are stereotyping themselves somehow. So, in the spirit of academia and free speech, they decided to not only beat the crap out of Melanie, but threaten to rape her also: “I didn’t know any of these people,” she said. One young, she claimed, jumped on her back and he put her in a choke hold. “We have brick walls in the middle school an... Death Penalty Is Too Easy For These Two Monsters
2008-04-09 18:09:00 The death penalty. I have supported capital punishment in the past, and support it now, but I still wonder if I am right in my position. There are times, however, that my first and only thought is, “Kill ‘em.” This is one of those instances: It was clear from the bruises and other injuries on the little girl’s body that Sunday was not the first time she had been abused, Dauphin County coroner Graham Hetrick told WGAL-TV. He said it was one of the worst cases of child abuse he has ever seen. Baez, 19, called for an ambulance Sunday and said Johnson had brought the unconscious child to her, limp and wet from an attempt to revive her in a bathtub, a police affidavit said. Johnson, 26, acknowledged beating the girl with a video game controller but did not say why, police said. Baez said Johnson had abused the girl in the past and that she heard the girl scream after Johnson beat her Sunday, according to the affidavit. The child’s name was Darisabel Baez....
