Review: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time- good, solid fun.
2010-06-01 03:06:00 I don’t have high hopes for movies based on video games (although Dungeon Siege is a guilty pleasure and Doom wasn't that bad) Prince of Persia easily leaped over my expectations. Doom [Blu-ray] In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale [Blu-ray] Prince Dastan is a low-born man adopted by the king after the king witnesses Dastan courageously protecting another child in the city. Dastan leads his special forces unit into Alamut, a sacred city (Prince of Persia is set in the pagan Middle East so nobody has to worry about fatwas) thought by Dastan's brother, Prince Tus, to be selling weapons to Persia’s enemies. Princess Tamina (sizzling-sexy Gemma Atherton) keeps a magical dagger that allows its wielder to travel back in time. She escapes with Dastan who was just accused of killing his father. Genna Atheron strutting her stuff in Prince of Persia On the way, Dastan and Tamina meet a gang of Ostrich racing tax dodgers, one of whom is a cool Sudanese knife throw... The futility of the DADT debate
2010-05-30 04:58:00 An a priori belief is one which is doesn't require empirical evidence. One accepts it as fact, a given. For Christians, a person becomes one at the moment of conception. Period. Since murder is wrong, abortion is a priori immoral. No circumstance, not even a desperate, poor, raped, teen mom can make abortion acceptable. For most liberals, no inconvenience, operational degradation, or morale problem can justify making people hide one's sexual orientation. Sexual behavior (unlike sex itself, which is a social construct) to them is at the core of one's identidy. The expression of one's sexuality is inviolate, like religious freedom or speech. (Interestingly, some speech is prohibited by the Army: You can't be a gang member or skin head.). Ask a liberal why the Army provides separate shower facilities and most will disparage such common sense concerns as silly. Prove to them that the Army will be worse in some way, and they won't care. (Elimination of sexual difference is... More About: Debate
24 finale
2010-05-26 09:38:00 It was a very classy ending, with the predator fade, and sets up the forthcoming film very nicely. The last few episodes were very good indeed, amongst the best 24 hours. I didn't particularly like when Jack Bauer spoke into the camera to decry dishonest statescraft. Venturing into political philosophy is out of character for the action-oriented Jack. The president's last (15) minute honesty rivals Jack's taking out of a helicopter with a handgun in one of the previous days for sheer unbelievability. This season did feature the best gunplay of the entire series. Jack coming out in full body armor, reminiscent of the North Hollywood Shootout, was thrilling, as was the battle with the Islamic terrorists in a warehouse complex earlier in the day. A fine way to end the series. 24: Seasons 1-7 Original post blogged on b2evolution. More About: Finale
Gay rights activists write pentagon policy
2010-05-25 01:32:00 WASHINGTON – A proposal to step up the repeal of the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military has won the White House's backing after administration officials met with gay rights activists. When we want to know what's best for the US military, who should you turn to first? Gay rights activists, of course. Here. Maybe they can consult the SEIU on Iranian nukes. Texas conservatives win textbook battle
2010-05-22 03:08:00 Let's get something out of the way: This Texas history standards controversy isn't about accuracy. Neither side will actually say that George Washington went on a hatchet killing spree or that immodestly dressed women caused the panic of 1873. This is about perspectives and what to leave in and out of the American story. From the examples in this story, are we going to mention that there really were Soviet spies in the American government or are we just going to focus on the "Red Scare." Ignoring the fact that Communists really did want to rule the world gives a little credence to Americans' apprehension, doesn't it? If "Dark Continent," "Savage," and "backward" is culturally biased, why isn't "Enlightenment." Would it hurt to know that many of the founding fathers not only respected religion, but saw it as imperative for a successful society. That states continued to have official religions after the constitution. Is it OK for kids to learn that the money faerie doesn't p... More About: Conservatives
Lost kitten needs finds new home- maybe
2010-05-22 02:13:00 The Asymmetric household has hemorrhaged compassion since yesterday when my wife found a lame kitten (above). This isn't a rare occurrence at our house: we've taken in other kittens, birds (nursed it back to health and then left it outside in the hot sun by mistake- woops!), and a few other of God's creatures. The cat's very cute and OK except for its leg. My dumb cat liked it instantly, licking it and showing it other forms of cat love. My mean cat didn't, but we're acclimating it. The dog's indifferent: it's just another animal that can't impregnate it, which is Goldy's goal as I read her very unladylike behavior around other dogs. Anyways, I told my wife to take it to the vet to see if it can be cured. If not, we'd have to kill it. My kids weren't happy to hear that. My daughter told me that it was wrong to kill the sick and that it was our duty to help, obviously never having heard about "death panels." "We can't afford that, sweetie." Her outburst gave me an... Iranian mullah reasoning check
2010-05-01 09:21:00 From here. "Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society I'll agree with this statement. The lady below is doing her best, through her immodest dress, to damage my chastity. While still intact, I can't say my chastity didn't struggle against the assault. However, most of the time it's unintentional on the part of women and the Iranian solution, total body coverage, is worse than a little temptation. Here's the illogical part. The kind of faulty reasoning below is called a non-sequitur. , which (consequently) increases earthquakes," said the respected cleric, Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi. My chastity does not lead to a subterranean pipeline straddling a fault in the earth's crust. It's irrelevant to tectonic movement. It simply does not follow. 24 things about 24 Season 8
2010-03-23 07:13:00 7. Wow, didn't see that one coming. Starbuck is the mole. Good one. 8. I liked the low-income white people subplot. It was pretty good. 9. One of the all-time TV shootouts, when Bauer and Cole battle it out. 10. Omar Hassan, President of the Islamic Republic of Kamistan, has an outstanding pompadour. 11. Renee's a mess. Really nuts this season. 12. 24 has become culturally irrelevant. It's like the second season of Ellen after Ellen comes out. Remember the controversies over stereotypes and messages? Now, CTU can send Bauer on a mission to capture an escaped syphilis patient from the Tuskegee experiment and Al Sharpton wouldn't even turn on his bullhorn. Tony Almeida can marry President Palmer's zombie and threaten to explode a nuclear bomb on the Special Olympics and people would only think, "Gee, I hope they disarm it before the relay." 13. Technically, it's still fine (see point 9), but it's reached the point where just a bunch of stuff happens and bad stuff a... More About: Television , Season , Things
Is Lost the first television show to come with Cliff notes?
2010-03-17 16:22:00 Sometimes I marvel at how Lost has uncoiled from a Survivor-like adventure drama to a horror movie to an archetypal myth and sometimes I wonder if the writers are just making it up as they go along, complicating things to hide their own lack of cohesion. Did they really intend the smoke monster to turn into Locke? Why introduce the temple at this late date? Indeed, the piling-on of subplot after subplot is both interesting and tiresome. I don't even know how to end this post. I'm so confused. The Case for the Hurt Locker
2010-03-13 01:45:00 I've seen most of the movies nominated for an Oscar. Avatar is probably the favorite. It deserves to win some kind of technical award. Without it's fancy 3-D cameras, it's as trite as Pocahontas. Inglorious Bastards is another technically- from a film-making point of view- brilliant movie that lingers in one's consciousness as long as the last Red Vine hangs around one's stomach. Blind Side is fine and more affecting than the previous two, but it's too close to a movie of the week. The first half of Up is all-time great. Unfortunately, the second half is just very good. My choice would be Hurt Locker. My case: 1. Hurt Locker explores a theme not touched upon by standard war movies, which either focus on the absurdity of war, the righteousness of a particular cause, or individual character (bravery, etc.). War is only Hurt Locker's backdrop. The subject matter is a person's desire to engage in the popularly bad or undesirable. In this case, war. The main character, Will... More About: Case
Review: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
2010-02-21 18:17:00 I'm a sucker for movies with historical allusions and ranging quests. Throw in some manly discovery, magic weapons, and attractive ladies and I'm yours to lose. The tween movie Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Theif doesn't squander these natural advantages. Percy Jackson is a dyslexic teenager who likes water and hates his loutish stepdad. It's not that he doesn't try: His dyslexia is on account of his brain being "hard-wired" for Greek. The lout shields him from godly intrigues. And, you'd expect Poseidon's son to like water, wouldn't you? Percy is set to the path of self-discovery when Zeus accuses Percy of stealing his lightning bolt (talk about profiling!) The gods send their mythological henchmen to get the bolt back, and a secret demigod underground springs to life to protect Percy. Chiron (Pierce Brosnan) fights off a fury during a field trip, allowing Satyr Grover Underwood (Brandon T. Jackson) to whisk him and his mom away to a demigod charter scho... More About: Review
Song of Bernadette on her feast day
2010-02-12 06:04:00 The Song of Bernadette is amongst the best Christian movies that deal with a supernatural event other than the central story of our Lord. It's based on the best-selling book by Franz Werfel of the same name and tells the story of Bernadette Soubirous, a French peasant girl to whom appeared Mary. It happens that the "song" of Bernadette is dramatic enough to not require embellishment. The film-makers accordingly opt for a strait account of the events, wrapped in their abundant cinematic skill, of course. The conflict in Song of Bernadette comes from members of Bernadette's own family, who discourage Bernadette for fear of mockery and local officials of the secular French government, who wish to complete the work of the French Revolution. The performances are superb. This is Vincent Price's best role, probably. Jennifer Jones perfectly portrays a simple, yet dignified and strong peasant girl. Jones evoked in me memories of similar people I've known (my sister-in-law, for exam...

We all feel for the victims, and nobody is excusing misconduct, so lets get that out of the way. Now, what hurt the Church's reputation is the seeming lack of action on the part of the Church hierarchy- really, if you're a hierarchical institution, the people on top better be good. By not immediately dismissing bad priests and bishops, the Church gave the impression that it wasn't concerned about or that it even condoned what was going on. We can do this two ways, by reducing the number of people or limiting each person's engagement with nature.
