Republican code-talker says, "Osama wants you to vote G.O.P."
2008-03-11 00:00:00 When a really creepy white guy who belongs to the same political party as the Dunce-in-Chief who let America get attacked on 9/11 says, "The terrorists want you to vote for Obama," then there's only one thing that's certain: the... Civil disobedience against the war on drugs
2008-03-08 00:00:00 The U.S. government has used the bogus war on drugs as an excuse to lock up millions of America's poor in for-profit prisons. Dying for our freedom to arm the insane
2008-02-18 01:38:00 Northern Illinois University killer Steven Kazmierczak received a psychological discharge from the Army in 2002. Before that he had spent an entire year in a psychiatric treatment center. He used to cut himself and had resisted taking his medications. . . . “He never wanted to identify with being mentally ill, [the treatment center manager] said. “That was part of the problem.” Speaking of people who won’t take their meds or face up to their mental health issues, the NRA has opposed all manner of restrictions on guns and is a primary reason Kazmierczak had an easier time legally obtaining lethal firepower here in America than in any other country on earth. His history of mental illness was no impediment whatsoever, apparently. And of course, even if American put in place a nationwide “mental illness” background check system similar to the criminal background check that gun dealers are currently required to perform, the exemption for guns shows would undoubtedly rema... "No Child" isn't working because it was never meant to
2008-02-17 21:31:00 Of course "No Child Left Behind" isn't working; it was never meant to — unless by "work" you mean to help bring an end to public education as we know it. NCLB mandates improvements without giving schools the resources to achieve those improvements. In fact, the whole strategy behind NCLB was to generate reams of testing data that, the G.O.P. hoped, would make private religious schools look better in comparison, thereby justifying vouchers and other causes of the anti-public-school movement. Unfortunately for the right, the data didn't bear this out, but NCLB is still working against schools by forcing them to "teach to the test" and meet unrealistic goals. This anti-education law needs to be revoked as soon as regime change comes next January. Of course, the Busheviks' real propaganda is more ridiculous than anything a comedian could think up. 2008-02-16 16:56:00 Dear Charles Krauthhammer: In your recent column titled "The Audacity of Selling Hope," you lambast Barrack Obama for his "astonishingly empty paper trail," toss out a quote about the "Helter-Skelter cult-ish qualities" of "Obama worshipers," and compare their candidate to bottled-water companies and other businesses that get people to pay for what they could otherwise get for free, saying that the silver-tongued freshman senator has found a way to sell hope. To get it, you need only give him your vote. Barack Obama is getting millions. This kind of sale is hardly new. Organized religion has been offering a similar commodity -- salvation -- for millennia.Funny you should mention religion. After all, crass manipulation of right-wing Christian fundamentalism is how your guy Dubya got the keys to the White House in the first place. And speaking of the worst president in history, don't you suppose that Bush's divisive, uncompromising style of... More About: Conservative

What's the matter, have you so run out of other municipal problems to solve that you have time to focus on the Marines? Crime has been wiped out, homelessness solved, the schools giving all children a top-notch education, potholes all filled in? Dear everyone else: I propose we build a wall around Berkeley, like in "Escape from New York," and then start airlifting in the Prozac. More About: Full , Nuts , Chock
Jeb Bush's booze, orgy, and softball-obsessed prison system
2008-02-15 19:30:00 It's a story too weird even for "Reno 911." In 2003, Florida's then-governor Jeb Bush put James V. Crosby in charge of the state's prison system. By 2006, Crosby had been forced to resign. He later pleaded guilty to corruption charge and today is himself a guest of the Federal prison system. Upon taking over from the disgraced Crosby, James McDonough found a system that was corrupt and out of control in the extreme. Highlights include:• Taxpayer funds to pay for booze and women; • Guards who punished other guards who threatened to report them. "Corruption had gone to an extreme," McDonough said, saying it all began at the top. "They seemed to be drunk half the time and had orgies the other half, when they weren't taking money and beating each other up." He added, "Women were treated like chattel in this department." McDonough described a bizarre prison culture among those that ran the system -- one that he says seemed obses... More About: System , Booze , Prison , Softball
