Today in history: April 24th
2008-04-24 12:11:00
There are some days every year that just seem to be more important than others, for whatever reason. Call it coincidence, call it cosmic, call me crazy.... but today is certainly a good example of what I like to call a "power day." Here's a brief history of April 24th (courtesy: wikipedia): 1479 BC - Thutmose III ascends to the throne of Egypt, although power effectively shifts to Hatshepsut (according to the Low Chronology of the 18th Dynasty). 1184 BC - Greeks enter Troy using the Trojan Horse 1877 - Russo-Turkish War, 1877–1878: Russia declares war on Ottoman Empire. 1915 - The Armenian Genocide begins with a massacre of hundreds of prominent Armenians in Constantinople (now Istanbul). 1916 - Easter Rising begins: The Irish Republican Brotherhood led by nationalists Patrick Pearse, James Connolly, and Joseph Plunkett start a rebellion in Ireland. 1941 - World War II: Operation Demon – the United Kingdom begins evacuating Greece. 1965 - Civil war breaks out ...

The Rise and Fall of Barack Obama
2008-03-23 00:00:00
We all know about Obama and the controversy surrounding his pastor, Jeremiah Wright. I wont bore you with all those details, as I'm sure you've heard them far too many times already. I would, however, like to comment on how these statements will affect the Obama campaign. Watching certain news outlets after Obama's now famous...

Mexican border agents have been shooting at U.S. border guards
2008-03-07 00:00:00
I urge all Americans to watch this video of Joe Scarborough's show, and listen to the commentary. Apparently, Mexican border agents (apparently involved in drug and/or human smuggling) have been taking shots at US border officials. There was once a time in this great republic of ours that such acts would have caused wars to...

Movie review: Michael Clayton
2008-03-05 00:00:00
Of the two best picture nominees I've seen so far, I have to admit, Michael Clayton is one hell of a movie. I don't want to spoil anything for those that haven't seen it yet. But after seeing this incredible movie, I have to recommend everyone go out and rent it. Movie execs and critics...

Superb Bowl
2008-02-04 18:51:00
I can't recall a more intense and amazing Super Bowl in the past decade than the one we all watched last night. Nobody gave the Giants a chance (except me). 14 point underdogs. Fighting against history, and possibly the best team to have ever played the game. They wouldn't just have to play a perfect game to beat the Patriots, they would have to play even better than that. I don't know what word describes something that's better than perfect, but I'll be damned if we didn't see it last night. They had to play with such heart, such soul... such desire. They played with all of that, and much more. This game was no ordinary Super Bowl, and everyone knew going into it that regardless of the outcome, history would be made. Either perfection would be personified in the form of a football team, or the biggest upset in NFL history would take place. I predicted such an upset, even down to the margin of victory. But I'm not gloating. Just reminding you that nothing in life is certain...
My "Super Tuesday" predictions
2008-02-04 00:00:00
I've already made my general election prediction (scroll down a bit for that), so I figure I'll do a little prognosticating before 22 states go to the polls on Tuesday . Most people will say they have no clue what will happen on the Republican side. I see Romney winning 4-5 states, and McCain winning the...

My "Super Bowl" predictions
2008-02-04 00:00:00
Far more important than my Super Tuesday predictions, come my predictions for the Super Bowl . And no, that's not because I have money riding on the game. That would be illegal, (and we here at Blog Country support our cops, and our troops, and... firefighters, and even meter maids!). No, this prediction is so much...

By the power of Greyskull!
2008-02-02 00:00:00
I've been writing mostly about politics and current events for the past year, and I have to admit, it's kind of depressed me. So I'm going to try and lighten this blog up a little bit and change things around. I plan to start reviewing movies, as well as accepting guest bloggers. So if you...

The media think we are stupid
2008-02-02 00:00:00
Tonight, as the returns were coming in from the Democratic primary/straw poll/beauty contest... whatever you want to call it, I couldn't help but get upset at some of the political commentators saying that "well, many Floridians went out and voted not knowing their vote wouldn't count." I heard that from Wolf Blitzer, among many, many...

A Floridian's View on the Campaign
2008-01-24 00:00:00
Ignored for decades in the primary season, by the time Florida got a chance to cast their ballots, most of the nominees had already been selected. Whether this is fair or not I'll leave for you to decide. The fact is, however, that Florida is more representative of the nation as a whole than any...

Bush White House made 935 false statements
2008-01-24 00:00:00
A study released Tuesday by several non-profit journalism groups claim George Bush and his aides made 935 false statements prior to the Iraq War in 2003. "In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on...

Benazir Bhutto assassinated
2007-12-31 00:00:00
Pakistan's former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto , was assassinated earlier today after addressing a large group of supporters in Rawalpindi. She died of a gunshot wound to the neck, after which the attacker blew himself up, killing at least twenty other bystanders. What does this mean for the future of Pakistan? Will Musharraf use this as...

Digg.com censoring certain articles?
2007-12-31 00:00:00
Either that, or their software does not know how to recognize valid URLs. Either way, I have not been able to submit any of my blog entries to Digg recently. I filled out a bug report, got no response, and the problem still persists. I can only assume this is an attempt to censor certain...

My electoral predictions for 2008
2007-12-31 00:00:00
I figure as we're only about five days away from the first caucus, I might as well start giving my predictions on how this race will shape up. Everyone agrees we have five candidates, possibly six if you count Edwards, who could become the next President of the United States. A white woman. A black...

The scrappy insurgency of Mike Huckabee
2007-12-18 00:00:00
In July, Mike Huckabee was polling around 3% in South Carolina. That's within the margin of error of nothing. Today, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll shows him leading the GOP pack with 24%. His main strength according to the survey? People actually believe him when he speaks. He is also leading in Iowa, where...

How YOU can make a difference, without going broke!
2007-11-30 00:00:00
I've received quite a few responses to some of my recent Ron Paul entries, many of them asking how they can help the campaign by doing things other than the usual (door to door, put a sign in your yard, etc.) Here are some easy (and cheap) ways you can show your support, if you...

Italy Claims 8th Wonder of the World!
2007-11-30 00:00:00
Quoting the Daily Mail: "Nestling in the foothills of the Alps in northern Italy , 30 miles from the ancient city of Turin, lies the valley of Valchiusella. Peppered with medieval villages, the hillside scenery is certainly picturesque. But it is deep underground, buried into the ancient rock, that the region's greatest wonders are concealed." When...

The fall TV line-up
2007-11-19 00:00:00
Every time an original show has success, the next season always brings a bunch of copycats, and none of them ever survive. Lost was followed by Surface, among others, which failed miserably. This year, everyone wants to be the next Heroes. So, in an attempt to ride the Heroes wave to ratings glory, we have...

The Las Vegas Presidential Democratic Debate
2007-11-19 00:00:00
After watching 2+ hours of the Democrats in what has to be their 200th debate, I have to say I'm not very impressed. The first 20 minutes were interesting. John Edwards and Barack Obama, realizing they need to catch up to Hillary, and soon, wasted no time attacking her. For a while there, John Edwards...

Ron Paul gaining momentum in New Hampshire, Iowa
2007-11-19 00:00:00
According to a recent CBS News/New York Times poll, Congressman Ron Paul is now at 8% in New Hampshire - ahead of Fred Thompson, and tied with John McCain. We've all seen the impact just a few million dollars is having on this campaign, if Ron Paul can continue raising money at the rate he...

One paragraph = 150 hits. That's how big the Ron Paul movement has become
2007-11-19 00:00:00
Yesterday I wrote a one paragraph entry about Congressman and Presidential contender Ron Paul . I simply posted some poll numbers, and gave my opinion on how great the campaign is going. What I didn't expect from that paragraph was to get 150 hits in one day, and close to 70 "diggs" on digg.com. One paragraph...

Remember, remember the 5th of November
2007-11-07 00:00:00
While the people of England were celebrating Guy Fawkes Day by lighting bonfires and getting drunk, another November 5th celebration was going on in the United States. In one single day, November 5th 2007, Ron Paul raised $4 million dollars. In one day. $4.3 million to be exact. This is huge news for the campaign...
Why not me?
2007-11-05 00:00:00
At 12:01am today, the Writers Guild of America went on strike. This means that most scripted shows on television, and most pre-production movies are now without writers. This won't affect the shows you watch on TV week in and week out, as most of their episodes for this season are already in the bag. But...
Liberal hypocrisy
2007-11-04 00:00:00
I'm beginning to get a little sick of all the left-wing commentators and bloggers complaining about the right-wing nut jobs like Ann Coulter. At least when she decides to say something crazy, she has a microphone in front of her. Last week, during an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, a few left-wing nuts...

Breaking news: Martial law declared in Pakistan
2007-11-04 00:00:00
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has declared a state of emergency, suspending the country's constitution. Troops have also apparently entered the Supreme Court and surrounded the judges' homes. The Supreme Court of Pakistan earlier ruled this state of Emergency illegal. This could just be an attempt for Musharraf to maintain power. But in Pakistan, a country...

Counted out long ago, now Ron Paul is doing the counting
2007-11-03 00:00:00
Republicans, young and old, you can breathe a little easier today. The future of your party may not be quite as uncertain, or left-leaning, as you may have believed. We all know about Rudy and him being pro-choice, we know about Romney flip-flopping on issue after issue. We know the party is in shambles after...

Spotlight on '08: John Edwards
2007-11-03 00:00:00
Former Senator from North Carolina, and 2004 Vice Presidential nominee, John Edwards has his sights set again on The White House. National polls show him a distant third to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, but in Iowa he is often the front-runner. His campaign made a calculated decision to put all of their time and...

Dallas Cowboys at the Buffalo Bills: a metaphor for this country?
2007-11-03 00:00:00
Having watched last night's incredibly bizarre game of Monday Night Football on ESPN, I couldn't help but laugh at the end as Dallas kicker Nick Folk (who happens to be on my fantasy team!) kicked the game winning field goal to pull off an improbable Dallas victory. Not only should Dallas have lost, they should...

Changes to my blog
2007-11-03 00:00:00
For all my avid blog readers out there, many of whom could care less about politics, I've decided to switch the focus of my blog to subjects that interest me more than the current presidential election. Sure, the election is important, but by now I think you all know where I stand on the issues,...
