Contact CNN/Univision - the Corridor must be part of the debate!
2008-02-16 22:58:00
We have a unique opportunity to push the Trans-Texas Corridor fiasco   in to the Presidential race by contacting CNN/Univision now before   this Thursday's debate in Austin between Senators Obama and Clinton.         Will you join us in contacting CNN & Univision to urge that they ask   a question concerning the Corridor, an issue that concerns all   Texans, and particularly the 1.3 million Texans who voted independent   in the 2006.  All the pundits say that independents will be pivotal   in the Texas primary on March 4th -- but they don't necessarily know   what issue is most important to us. read more

TSA: Taking, Splurging and Appropriating
2008-02-14 00:03:00
In what must be one of the few fun-filled functions in the otherwise beastly boring lives of bureaucrats, undercover operatives try to sneak weaponry through airport checkpoints to test how good Transportation Security Administration screeners are at finding guns, bombs and knives. At half a dozen airports around the country, TSA employees were so uncharacteristically successful that it naturally triggered an investigation to see if they were cheating on their tests. Sure enough, they had been tipped off by their buddies that the fun-filled functionaries were coming. People were shocked. read more

Competing Currencies, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2008-02-13 07:00:00
I rise to speak on the concept of competing currencies. Currency, or money, is what allows civilization to flourish. In the absence of money, barter is the name of the game; if the farmer needs shoes, he must trade his eggs and milk to the cobbler and hope that the cobbler needs eggs and milk. Money makes the transaction process far easier. Rather than having to search for someone with reciprocal wants, the farmer can exchange his milk and eggs for an agreed-upon medium of exchange with which he can then purchase shoes. This medium of exchange should satisfy certain properties: it should be durable, that is to say, it does not wear out easily; it should be portable, that is, easily carried; it should be divisible into units usable for every-day transactions; it should be recognizable and uniform, so that one unit of money has the same properties as every other unit; it should be scarce, in the economic sense, so that the extant supply does not satisfy the wants of everyone dem...

Lorval 2005 Pinot Noir France
2008-02-11 23:18:00
This was the first of two bottles we had that night, and at least one turns your tongue completely black. If this isn't the wine that did it, then for $5 per bottle you've got a great table wine to serve to the children, or lesser guests, while you open up something a bit better for yourself. I'm not going to buy it again, but, if it's on a happy hour menu, it's a safe choice. read more

Second Amendment Battle in DC, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2008-02-10 07:00:00
As a United States Congressman, I take my oath to uphold all of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights very seriously. Unfortunately, too many in Washington DC believe they can pick-and-choose which provisions of the constitution they can uphold. For example, many politicians, judges, and bureaucrats believe they have the power to disregard our right to own guns, even though the second amendment explicitly guarantees the people's right to "keep and bear arms." Like the Founding Fathers, I believe that the right to keep and bear arms is fundamental to a free society. Where law-abiding citizens are most freely allowed to defend themselves, communities are safer, while crime rises when law-abiding people's access to firearms is restricted. Gun laws only disarm those who respect the law. Those with criminal tendencies do not turn in their weapons and reform their ways because government bureaucrats enact statutes that tell them to. Gun control laws turn peaceful citizens into sitt...

Congressman Paul Takes Aim at DC Gun Ban
2008-02-07 07:00:00
Congressman Ron Paul has signed on to a letter to the President asking that an amicus curiae brief filed by U.S Solicitor General Paul D. Clement on DC v. Heller, otherwise known as the DC Gun Ban Case, be withdrawn on the basis that the reasoning within, were it to be accepted by the Supreme Court, leaves open the door for more encroachments on individuals? Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms. The brief in question argues that categorical bans of virtually all self-defense firearms may be upheld as constitutional if a court determines that these prohibitions are ?reasonable? restrictions of constitutional rights. The reasonability standard is the lowest standard of constitutional review our courts utilize, a much lesser hurdle than the ?strict scrutiny? review that courts use in many cases in which regulations threaten individual rights. read more

Combat Veterans Debt Elimination Act, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2008-02-06 07:00:00
Congressman Ron Paul has signed on as a cosponsor of legislation that would prohibit the Secretary of Veterans Affairs from collecting certain debts owed to the United States by members of the Armed Forces and veterans who die as a result of an injury incurred or aggravated on active duty in a combat zone. If a service member dies in combat and has received Montgomery GI benefits, his or her surviving family members are required to repay those loans. So far the VA has attempted to recover over $56,000 from the families of 22 deceased service members, with the bulk of the money owed in the form of college loans. read more

Paving Paradise, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2008-02-04 18:23:00
The Constitution guarantees Americans the right to be secure against all unreasonable seizures. My home state of Texas is unfortunately planning on some very unreasonable seizures of land with the monstrous Trans Texas Corridor highway project. The TTC plans call for a highway to cut through about 4,000 Texas miles, and with separate rail lines for passenger and freight, a multi-lane highway with separate truck lanes, utility and cable easements, this highway could be as wide as 1200 feet across. In the end this project would consume something like half a million acres of land in Texas . However, since the exact path of the road has not been determined, it is putting much more acreage in jeopardy, and in limbo. Taking land is destructive enough. But the perpetual threat of taking an undetermined amount of land is hanging over the heads of millions of Texans and putting their lives at a standstill. Land is a store of wealth and a source of stability. This highway project is tr...

Why America Needs Coalition ? Clean Elections and Freedom

Statement on H.R. 5104, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2008-01-30 07:00:00
Madame Speaker, I rise in opposition to the extension of the Protect America Act of 2007 because the underlying legislation violates the US Constitution . The mis-named Protect America Act allows the US government to monitor telephone calls and other electronic communications of American citizens without a warrant. This clearly violates the Fourth Amendment, which states: ?The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.? Why Must We Obey Laws?
2008-01-30 00:44:00
We libertarians recognize the value of a system of laws. More than any other movements, ours espouses formation of a system of laws that will be a system that implements justice and that will work. Our goal is a system that first promotes justice, but which yearns also be a society of love. A society must first be a society of justice before it can be a society of compassion and wellness. read more

Statement on H.R. 5140, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2008-01-29 07:00:00
Madame Speaker, I find it odd that HR 5140, a bill allegedly designed to provide a stimulus for the anemic American economy, contains provisions that could damage the economy and hurt American taxpayers. Specifically, the provisions increasing the loan limitations of the Federal Housing Administration and the Government Sponsored Enterprises (e.g. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac), will exacerbate the long-term problems in the housing market, and may even lead to a future taxpayer bailout of the housing industry. The recent bursting of the housing bubble should have taught my colleagues the dangers of government polices that distort the market by diverting resources to housing, when those resources would be more efficiently used in other sectors of the economy. Ironically, many of the same members who insisted that upper income taxpayers be denied the tax rebates are enthusiastic champions of the provisions in HR 5140 increasing the FHA loan limit to $633,500 and the GSE loan limit to $72...

Economic Stimulus Concerns, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2008-01-29 01:07:00
This past week in Washington there has been much talk about the economy. It seems by their actions the leadership and the Fed is finally willing to admit we have a problem, and we need to do something about the economic mess we are in. This is a good thing. However, they are still not being honest about the root cause of our impending crisis and want to deal only with symptoms, not the disease. There are some positive aspects of the highly lauded economic stimulus package that has been negotiated. I am in favor of taxpayers getting some of their money back, however temporary tax cuts and one-time rebates will not ?fix? the economy. What we desperately need right now is real deep significant tax cuts that are enabled by big spending cuts and reduction of government waste that is so rampant. Unfortunately, too many in Washington still believe we can spend our way into prosperity, which does not work and never has. read more

Stimulus Package ? What is Not Seen
2008-01-27 22:33:00
Regarding the proposed stimulus package: What we see may be the government scrambling for solutions that make the problems worse. I know that it will fail in the long run. It might help if total expenditures are cut drastically and the 2002-03 tax cuts are made permanent. What we do not see is the cause of the problem and what the end result of this fix will be.read more
