How Much Should You Save Each Year?
2008-05-16 01:07:00 The ‘Million Dollar Question’: what should you be doing now when you’re young to make sure you can live in style when you stop working? Did you ever notice that almost every bank or finance advertisement features the same recurring elements and themes? They’re always trying to explain retirement and savings with the same tired comparisons. It’s usually ‘training for a marathon’ with investments that pan out over time, rather than a ’short sprint’ with huge initial returns that fizzle. Don’t forget those large noble elk roaming around the forest looking very wise and stately with their financial planning advice. My favorites were always all those sailing-themed commercials. Apparently Wedding Crashers was right, ‘Sailing’s like sex to these people. They love it.’ But really what it all boils down to is the one big question: how much of my yearly income should I sacrifice for the greater cause of my ’s... More About: Save , Year
Olbermann’s Endless Incoherent Rant Full of Hate
2008-05-15 22:31:00 Normally I don’t post the political opposition’s rantings on this site unless it is so over the top as to completely discredit the messenger. Keith Olbermann achieves that standard in this incoherent rant against President Bush. Clearly the man suffers from some kind of pathological disorder: I’m amazed that MSNBC allow this kind of babbling mental sickness to be aired. More About: Hate , Rant , Full , Endless
The Business of Giving Stuff Away For Free
2008-05-15 22:04:00 Dunkin’ Donuts is giving away a free 16 oz. cup of iced coffee today (March 15, 2008). Anyone who walks into a DD store is entitled to one with any preferred fixins or flavors. Pair that with the free chicken sandwich you can get at McDonald’s today, and you’ve got yourself a meal right there. But wait, one more to add to the list of freebies on this otherwise completely arbitrary day - Redbox is giving away a free DVD rental if you sign up on their website. But how can these businesses do this? McDonald’s plans to give away 2 million of its Southern Style chicken biscuits this morning and another 6 chicken sandwiches during the lunch and dinner hours today. Dunkin’ Donuts also estimates that it will give away 4 million cups of iced coffee during the hours of the free promotion from 10 am to 10pm. In addition to the expense of giving away these items with no immediate profit, both companies have launched expensive ad campaigns in print, on the radio, an... Bush Attacking Obama Is Bush Attacking All Democrats
2008-05-15 21:27:00 What’s it mean to be the presumptive nominee? People have your back. Barack Obama is defended by those who feel attacked. Joe Biden: “This is bullshit, this is malarkey. This is outrageous, for the president of the United States to go to a foreign country, to sit in the Knesset . . . and make this kind of ridiculous statement.” “He is the guy who has weakened us,” he said. “He has increased the number of terrorists in the world. It is his policies that have produced this vulnerability that the U.S. has. It’s his [own] intelligence community [that] has pointed this out, not me.” Nancy Pelosi: “We have a protocol, sort of a custom, informally around here that we don’t criticize the president when he is on foreign soil. One would think that that would apply to the president that he would not criticize Americans when he is on foreign soil.” “I think what the president said in that regard is beneath the dignity of... California High Court Tosses Gay Marriage Ban
2008-05-15 21:27:00 In a long-awaited decision that generated instant jubilation in the LGBT community and among their friends and allies, the Republican-dominated California Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriage today. The 4-3 decision is here. (WARNING, 172-page pdf file.) From the ruling (paragraphs inserted for readability): After carefully evaluating the pertinent considerations in the present case, we conclude that the state interest in limiting the designation of marriage exclusively to opposite-sex couples, and in excluding same-sex couples from access to that designation, cannot properly be considered a compelling state interest for equal protection purposes. To begin with, the limitation clearly is not necessary to preserve the rights and benefits of marriage currently enjoyed by opposite-sex couples. Extending access to the designation of marriage to same-sex couples will not deprive any opposite-sex couple or their children of any of the rights and benefits conferred by the ma... AK-Sen, AK-AL, AK-Pres: Democrats competitive all around
2008-05-15 21:27:00 Research 2000 for Daily Kos. 5/12-14. Likely voters. MoE 4% (12/3-6 results) If 2008 election for Congress were held today, for whom would you vote for if the choices were between Ethan Berkowitz, the Democrat, and Don Young, the Republican? Young (R) 40 (42) Berkowitz (D) 50 (49) If 2008 election for U.S. Senate were held today, for whom would you vote for if the choices were between Mark Begich, the Democrat, and Ted Stevens, the Republican? Stevens (R) 43 (41) Begich (D) 48 (47) I was shocked to see the numbers after the first poll. I was even worried that they might be a bit of an outlier. But then Stevens’ own pollster helpfully confirmed the numbers. Local pollsters are not surprised by the numbers. Dave Dittman, who’s firm Dittman Research is polling for Stevens, said the publicity on corruption investigations is hurting the Republicans. “It’s interesting and it’s early but I wasn’t shocked,” Di... Obama Gets Triple-Teamed on ‘Appeasement’
2008-05-15 21:27:00 First, George W. Bush takes a swipe: Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: “Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.” We have an obligation to call this what it is – the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history. McCain kinda sorta smarmily vaguely agrees: Asked if he thought Mr. Obama was an appeaser — the Democratic candidate has said he would be willing to meet with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran — Mr. McCain sidestepped and said, “I think that Barack Obama needs to explain why he wants to sit down and talk with a man who is the head of a government that is a state sponsor of terrorism, that is responsible for the killing of br... No One Wants To Be A Republican Part II
2008-05-15 21:27:00 NPR agrees with all the other polls: U.S. Is Headed in the Wrong Direction When asked about the job President Bush is doing, 65 percent of respondents overall said they disapproved and a bare majority, 51 percent, said they disapproved strongly. That might help explain why, after years of near-equity between the parties, more voters called themselves Democrats than Republican s by a difference of 10 percentage points. In something of a contradiction, however, the head-to-head match-ups for the White House are considerably closer. Those polled preferred Democratic Sen. Barack Obama over Republican Sen. John McCain by 5 percentage points, while McCain and Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton were tied. Republican Glen Bolger, who conducted the most recent NPR survey along with Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg, says that while these presidential margins might be narrow, the math is pretty clear. “There are more Democrats in the country than there are Republicans,” Bolger says.... McCain Through the Looking Glass
2008-05-15 21:27:00 In a speech today, John McCain will declare his new plan for Iraq. Except it’s not a plan. It’s new ideas. Well, maybe not so much new ideas. It’s a vision, a vision of Iraq 2013. The dreamy future you can only secure by voting for J. Sidney McCain III. By January 2013, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom. The Iraq War has been won. Iraq is a functioning democracy, although still suffering from the lingering effects of decades of tyranny and centuries of sectarian tension. Violence still occurs, but it is spasmodic and much reduced. Okay, so most US troops are home and violence is better than it is today. In other words, the Iraq war has been “won,” but only for certain, extremely odd, definitions of won. Not quite the kind of accomplishment most of us might want out of the next four years. But wait... More About: Glass , Through the Looking Glass
Bush: We Should Not Appease Terrorists. Obama: That’s an Attack on Me
2008-05-15 19:28:00 Well if the shoe fits. How anyone can construed a general statement against appeasing terrorists as an attack on anyone but the terrorists themselves is beyond me. Obama ’s hyper-defensive reaction is far more revealing about Obama himself than about Bush . Notice how MSNBC echo the Dem line that this is an attack on Obama, even though the President never mentioned Obama or Democrats. These are the exact words. Please judge for yourself why Obama and the Democrats would see this as an attack on them (unless they know it to be true): “some people believe the United States should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before, as Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ‘Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.’ We have an obligation to call this what it is—the false comfort of ap... Young Bears Do More Than Just Chill
2008-05-15 19:04:00 We reported on Tuesday that most of Bear Stearns’ employees were just lounging around at the office all day, basically getting paid to go to the gym and relax at the spa. That is, until JP Morgan completes its takeover of the deflated investment bank next month. But what else are those crazy kids up to? Corey Lorinsky from ClusterStock interviewed a young Bear Stearns employee who described his short lifespan at the failed company in a little more detail: Summer Training: From the day I got there, I knew things weren’t right. When we were doing Thompson training, the lady teaching the class was using Bear Stearns as an example stock. Every time she came back to the main research page, after she showed us some software feature, Bear’s stock was down another $5. On The Job: When I got there, the job didn’t seem like the horror stories I had heard. Most of the first-years weren’t very busy. We would routinely congregate around each other’s desks and... 2008-05-15 15:26:00 From the GREAT STATE OF MAINE… Got Sacrifice? [T]here is one front and one battle where everyone in the United States—every man, woman, and child—is in action, and will be privileged to remain in action throughout this war. That front is right here at home, in our daily lives, in our daily tasks. Here at home everyone will have the privilege of making whatever self-denial is necessary, not only to supply our fighting men, but to keep the economic structure of our country fortified and secure during the war and after the war. This will require, of course, the abandonment not only of luxuries but of many other creature comforts. —Franklin Delano Roosevelt, April, 1942 George W. Bush says he gave up golf in 2003 to show our men and women in uniform that he’s willing to sacrifice big time for them. (He also gave up candy, but apparently the lure of high-fructose corn syrup proved to be too strong.) So bully for him. I’m sure the preside... More About: Thursday
