2008-05-03 17:25:00 I was reading the print edition of The Christian Science Monitor the other day and noted the following story by Monitor staff writer Gordon Lubold. 2008-05-02 12:39:00 A comment about rising prices locally.Clearly, grocers are feeling the "pinch". Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables are fully stocked but not being purchased. Bins of over-ripe spoiling produce are marked down to bargain prices -- yet there are few takers. I'm not trying to be pessimistic, but up here along the Wisconsin-Michigan border (where incomes tend to be lower than state averages) the latest price increases are having a major impact on families with low to moderate incomes. Locally, the anticipated Fall '08 closure of the Niagara (Wis.) paper mill by its new owner, NewPage Corp. -- which will result in the loss of 319 local jobs -- isn't helping matters. I noticed grocery shoppers cautiously comparing prices and stocking up on coffee, cereal, canned vegetables.(Why coffee? I don't recall reading anything in the news about coffee -- unless folks feel that this is the next price-hike coming. Come to think of it, I haven't seen much change in retail coffee prices lately.)-... More About: News , 2008

But you might call the idea of earning a four-year college degree right here in Florence County an intriguing possibility. 2008-04-30 12:31:00 I came across this "different perspective" about rising gas prices while checking the news late yesterday:Sky-high gas prices may have silver liningMacleans, 29-APR-2008 (Steve Rennie, The Canadian Press)[Excerpt:] - OTTAWA - Sky-high gas prices might be pinching people's pockets, but experts say the pain at the pump is benefiting governments - and maybe even the environment. Black gold is filling tax coffers as crude oil prices surge, notes Calgary-based energy consultant Michael Ervin - and the higher prices may persuade more consumers to buy fuel-efficient vehicles.I hadn't thought about this before, but since U.S. federal and state gasoline taxes are a percentage of the price per gallon, governments must be seeing a nice boost in tax revenue. As the author also states, the environment benefits from fewer emissions as people drive less, and consumer awareness for fuel-efficient vehicles is enhanced.(But don't get me wrong, I'm still not happy with the rising prices.) - ... 2008-04-29 12:38:00 A comment about rising prices locally. This past weekend I stopped at the BP station in Vulcan, Michigan, to have a cup of coffee with a friend of mine who works there. It was early morning and half a dozen "turkey hunters" were inside wearing camouflage -- (presumably this type of clothing will enable them to sneak up on the "world's stupidest birds" without being seen). Anyway, I noticed that the price of fishing worms (kept in a small refrigerator near the cash register) has SKYROCKETED.I mean, seriously...
