2008-03-24 11:39:00 - - - Wisconsin News (Northwoods - local) - - -I don't make a habit of reporting "old" news but I was out of town on Wednesday and Thursday last week and didn't find the following article until this weekend - when I was reading the newspapers I missed. On the front of page of Wednesday's Daily News (P.O. 2008-03-21 11:42:00 My family and I returned late yesterday from a short but enjoyable trip to northern Ontario. The Canadian officials working the border crossing at the International Bridge, Sault Sainte Marie, are always cordial and extend a hearty welcome to Canada. The only drawback (as is increasingly the case) is returning to the U.S. and encountering the unpleasant officers manning the American side. You'd think they would welcome returning U.S. citizens but instead I found myself being grilled over the purpose of my family's trip to Canada (shopping), the trunk of my vehicle checked, and a surly "You can go" when the officer failed to find anything unusual. I'm not sure how our border officers treat visiting Canadians, but if it's anything like they treat returning Americans I'm surprised anyone wants to come here at all. I travel to Canada every other month, and all I can say is that I increasingly dread crossing back into the United States. This isn't how it is supposed to be.- - - Wis... 2008-03-17 11:37:00 A story in Friday's Daily Press (600 Ludington St, Escanaba, MI 49829), reported that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) cofirmed the presence of at least one cougar locally in Delta County. Is this good news?It depends who you ask.Having lived in California where the "big cats" are known as mountain lions [photo], they would occasionally enter populated areas - I can't think of any single animal that strikes more fear in me. (I've seen two.) These cats are BIG, aggressive and they don't scare easily. They have attacked and killed hikers, joggers and bicycle riders.Everyone should read this article:Cat fight. 2008-03-14 11:34:00 In yesterday's blog I mentioned that the Florence (Wis.) school board had held a dismissal hearing on whether teacher Nick Baumgart's contract should be renewed. Baumgart was recently acquitted by a local jury on a felony charge of "recklessly causing bodily harm to an eighth-grade boy" (Florence Mining News , 12-MAR-2008 , p.1) although a misdemeanor charge of battery can still be filed in the case, according to special prosecutor Steve Garbowicz of Eagle River (Wis.).One of my readers, who attended the school board meeting, wrote that the session started late and adjourned around 9:30 p.m. with a commitment to reconvene soon:"Witnesses subpoenaed were: Sheriff Jeff Rickaby, Sgt. Dan Chimalera, Deputy Paul Bomberg, and one student, [name withheld] and her dad ... 2008-03-12 11:32:00 Yesterday the Times of India newspaper carried a story about the percentage of ethnic Indians employed in the United States at such venues as Nasa, Microsoft, IBM, etc. These figures (which seemed ridiculously high, but who am I to question the numbers) were presented in India's Parliament and subsequently reported by The Times' correspondent who covers parliamentary news. I, in turn, scanning the world media, linked to the article.Today's Times of India is now reporting a big stink about the story they carried and a retraction of what was stated -- which, as I see it, really wasn't their correspondent's fault. The latest article, titled India rising in U.S.: Govt falls victim to net hoax, reads in part:"By relaying to Rajya Sabha members (as reported in The Times of India) a host of unsubstantiated and inflated figures about Indian professionals in U.S., the government also made a laughing stock of itself. SPECIAL REPORT: Kosovo's independence - Is an Islamic republic in the cards
2008-02-29 02:46:00 This blog has been covering the matter of Kosovo's independence from the perspective of the problems that arise when a region self-proclaims its sovereignty and is then granted legitimacy by foreign governments backed by military force. Such is the case with Kosovo which has support and encouragement from NATO, the United States and much of the European Union. There appears to be a lack of understanding in the West of the religious significance of the Kosovo-Metohija region to Serbia. Although this matter receives occasional mention in the world's media it really deserves more prominence - particularly since Kosovo is almost entirely Muslim and now rules over a region embracing numerous Serbian churches of historic and spiritual significance. The New York Times, in an article dated 17 December 2007, stated:"The ethnic Albanians of Kosovo, who are 95 percent Muslim, could look to their Muslim roots for identity, as some did after the war of the 1990s, when several local imams went to...
