- - - Wisconsin News (Northwoods local) - - -This week's Florence Mining News has published a letter to the editor about NewPage Corporation. For those who have been following this on my blog (see 24-January-2008 for the latest post on this subject) then you know that NewPage bought the local papermill in Niagara, Wisconsin, and then announced it would be closing it at the end of April, resulting in 319 lost jobs. The Niagara mill has been operating in this small town for 119 years. Here is the letter from p.3 of the Florence Mining News dated February 13:Dear Editor:NewPage. Who and what are you? A corporate entity or just a name thrown out here to give the illusion of hope and security? All I know is you blew into town on a cold winter wind and used smoke and mirrors to create that illusion. But then I guess the name can be taken two ways. One:  As it was taken (the illusion) by 300+ people who now have to wonder how long they'll have to tread water to keep their noses ab...

Yesterday I was reading the The Economist (issue date Feb. 9, 2008 ) and noticed an article about Kalamazoo, Michigan, titled "A Promising Future:  Will an imaginative new approach to economic development work?".[Excerpt:] - "KALAMAZOO, a medium-sized post-industrial city in Michigan, shares the problems of countless such others across America. Its population is shrinking and its poverty rate hovers around 30%. But in November 2005 it received good news: in an effort to revitalise the city, anonymous donors would pay the college tuition fees of every graduate from Kalamazoo's public schools."[End excerpt.]How awesome is that? The premise is that offering free college tuition to the city's youth will be an attractive incentive for families to move to (or remain in) the City of Kalamazoo. It is further envisioned that this investment in education will attract business and industry -- eager to take advantage of the "new skilled workforce".The program is still too new to judge ...

The nearest "commercial" airport for me is across the stateline in Upper Michigan -- specifically the small Ford Airport at Iron Mountain-Kingsford. The only scheduled airline these past few years has been Skyway operating on behalf of Wisconsin-based Midwest. I think I speak for just about everyone when I say that we have come to appreciate the fine service offered by both carriers.Regretttably, our Midwest-connection ends June 5 when Northwest's carrier, Mesaba, is scheduled to begin service. The frequency of flights is being reduced, the destinations changed (no longer can we fly to Milwaukee -- the new choice is either Detroit or Minneapolis with 1 flight daily each).Chatting with the locals and some business owners I get the impression that many of them will in future drive to Green Bay (about 2 hours south of here) and continue to fly Midwest from there.I truly hope Northwest / Mesaba succeeds at Ford Airport, but Midwest will be a tough act to follow. It will be interesting ...

A bitterly cold weekend here in northeastern Wisconsin with windchills of 40 below zero. It's cold again this Monday morning -- although not as severe.Current temperature as I write this:  -15°F (-26°C).And speaking of cold...I came across a story this morning about an "ice fishing casualty" in Japan who succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning from the gas burner he was using for heat.A reminder to our local ice fishermen (I see plenty of shacks on area lakes!) to only use proper heaters and heed the safety precautions recommended by the manufacturer.Poison gas in tent kills ice fisherman, Mainichi Japan - - - Wisconsin News - - -Feingold unlikely to offer endorsement before Feb. 19 primaryExaminer, 10-FEB-2008 [Excerpt:] - JANESVILLE, Wis. - Wisconsin Sen. Every now and then when I sift the world's media I find an article that is really worth reading. It doesn't necessarily have to do with 'breaking news' or an international crisis -- sometimes it is simply a glimpse into a closed society, a little-known religion or perhaps a local custom.Whereas this blog is designed to share news and commentary from around the world, I sometimes have difficulty placing these "unique" stories within a particular category. At best I can include them in "Other News " at the bottom of the blog (or even sneak an occasional item under "Intelligence Briefing") but today I want this article right up front.I encourage my readers to click the link and check out the full story. It's light reading, informative and fascinating:Chillin' at a North Korean karaoke barAsia Times, Hong Kong 08-FEB-2008  (Sunny Lee)[Published synopsis:] - While Pyongyang nightlife may be beyond most curious tourists' reach, North Korean restaurants and karaoke bars in China...

I know this sounds silly but if you have listened to these addresses over the years (and not just with President Bush but with previous presidents as well) you can distinctly hear one individual start clapping loudly at first -- then everyone immediately follows his actions.]- ...

The BBC reported this morning that Asian stock markets had rallied as a result of the interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve. However, the article states that "Despite the recoveries, which were sparked by the Fed cutting U.S. rates to 3.5% from 4.25%, analysts predict more share volatility in coming weeks.
