(6:30 a.m. CST, 12h30 UTC: Link corrected for Osama bin Laden transcript)- - -Congratulations to Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee for their respective wins in the Iowa caucus. In a sense I expected Obama's victory but I'm not really sure what I was expecting for the Republicans - but Huckabee wasn't it. (I have nothing against Arkansas' former governor, so why I should be surprised by his victory is anyone's guess -- especially since I didn't have any specific candidate in mind for the outcome.)That said, I'll make a quick comment on Barack Obama's prospects for becoming president. His biggest obstacle will be (as all major media have pointed out) his lack of experience. If he does in fact become the Democratic candidate then the question naturally arises:Can he win a nationwide election?Possibly -- but it's all going to come down to his running-mate's qualifications. Obama's lack of experience is going to have to be significantly offset by a veteran politician with many ye...

2008-01-02 12:48:00
Greetings to my readers in 2008 ! It seems like last year flew by quickly -- until December, that is, and then it seemed like it would never end. I hope everyone had a great New Year's holiday. We received some additional light snowfall the past few days here in northeastern Wisconsin with temperatures in the 20s (-2 to -3 Celsius). In addition to posting my selection of global news I'm continuing special coverage on Pakistan.- - - Pakistan's elections - - -Today's Examiner is reporting a one month delay in Pakistan's national elections. This is a responsible period of delay without being excessive or indefinite. Right now emotions are high with Benazir Bhutto's assassination -- and to hold elections so soon after a national tragedy would be similar to holding U.S. presidential elections, with former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani as a candidate, just weeks after 9/11. The election results would be unfairly influenced by public emotion. The PPP is, as to be expected, angry at...

At the same time, President Pervez Musharraf, the recently retired general in power since a 1999 coup, has received about $10-billion in U.S. aid, much of it to reinforce the Pakistani military in fighting Al Qaeda, the Taliban and global jihadism in South Waziristan and other tribal areas. If a U.S. policy was ever broken, this is it.The assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the Western-educated former prime minister who returne...

Pine River Analysis :  Benazir Bhutto?s Assassination © Pine River World News1. Introduction2. Ms Bhutto's Return to Pakistan3. What Does the Future Hold?INTRODUCTIONI had considered posting a special report earlier today but, after checking the available news and blog sources, found that most were reporting the exact same thing -- and with few details. I therefore decided to wait until this evening and give myself time to think about this matter and its immediate and long-term ramifications. Keep in mind that this analysis is being written a mere 12-hours after events -- details may arise later that may alter my opinion, but as of now this is how I see things.Regular readers of this blog know that I keep tabs on what's happening in Pakistan, and a quick search under "Bhutto" using the IceRocket search box in the right column (which is specifically linked to this blog's content) will confirm this.First, let me say that I deplore Ms Bhutto's assassination and my prayers g...

I enjoyed being able to "sleep in" on Christmas Day -- actually stayed in bed until almost 7 o'clock. But today is back to normal and I started reading the news around 3 a.m in preparation for this post.As for the holidays, we went to my mom's house on Christmas Eve for the traditional dinner of "lasagna and garlic bread" -- just like they used to eat in Bethlehem in biblical times!Christmas Day, however, was spent quietly at home with my family. It seems that much of it is based on minutes of secret conversations between senior Iranian military leaders and their political bosses in Tehran. Why would one of the most senior of Khomeinist diplomats suddenly contact the British and, according to Ahmadinejad, provide them with "top secret material" on Iran's nuclear programme? - - - Intelligence Briefing - --The plan to topple Pakistan's militaryAsia Times, Hong Kong 06-DEC-2007  (Ahmed Quraishi)[Excerpts:] - As [Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf] completed the remaining part of his U.S. visit [in September 2006], his allies in Washington and elsewhere, as all evidence suggests now, were plotting his downfall. They had decided to take a page from the book of successful "color revolutions" where Western governments covertly used money, private media, student unions, NGOs and international pressure to stage coups, basically overthrowing individuals not fitting well with Washington's agenda. This recipe proved its success in former Yugoslavia, and more recently in Georgia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. In Pakistan, the target is a president who refuses to play ball with the U.S. on Afghanistan, China and Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan. Here in northern Wisconsin most municipal drinking water is non-fluoridated (except for what occurs naturally) so I had almost forgotten about "intentionally" fluoridated water until I saw this article today:Finally, Queensland turns to fluorideThe Australian, 05-DEC-2007[Excerpts:] - "QUEENSLAND will finally add fluoride to its water supplies from next year, in a move to remedy its dental health woes and bring it into line with other states and territories."Clearly this article, in its entirety, makes no mention whatsoever about the hazards of fluoride -- identified, for example, as a Schedule 'A' poison by the State of Pennsylvania. So, you ask:  Does fluoride really prevent tooth decay? In my opinion:  YES. And they aren't saying anything about a horrific case that, on the surface at least, looks open-and-shut. The state Justice Department has released only scant details about Sheriff's Deputy Tyler Peterson's rampage Oct. 7, when he gunned down six people and wounded a seventh at a party. Peterson apparently killed himself hours later outside a friend's home, but questions still linger, from how police reacted to how Peterson committed suicide.[Blog note: See my post of 08-Oct-2007 for initial reports on this incident.]- - - National Intelligence Estimate:  Iran Report - - -The U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence has released "unclassified" portions of this investigative report on Iran's nuclear program.PDF file, 13...
