Humpback Kill Suspended - For Now
2007-12-21 11:47:00 (Artist Credit: Jeff Wilkie)Well, it appears to be official now. Japan has agreed to suspend it's humpback whale hunt while discussions are under way to reform the International Whaling Commission. They still are still on track to pursue over 900 Minke whales and over 50 Fin whales.Links:Japan Calls Off Whale CullUnder Pressure, Japan Suspends Humpback HuntI was going to write something snarky about the Beluga Whales being forced to entertain the ignorant Japanese audience members, but this writer did it for me. Flip Flops and Indecision on Whaling
2007-12-20 08:59:00 (Artist Credit: Sachi's Dolphin Art)Picture this. You walk into a shop that specializes in whale related products. Like stuffed toys, key chains, posters, t-shirts, etc., all sharing one thing in common - the whale. Kinda like walking into a Disney store and feeling like a kid surrounded by the happy faces of Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and the rest of their friends.Happiest place on Earth? You might think so. That is, until you catch sight of a chiller at the back of the store. Curious, you walk over expecting maybe juices or sodas to be for sale. Instead, it's stocked full of whale meat. Not feeling so warm and fuzzy any more, huh? There is such a place in the middle of Tokyo's tourist district.Back in Tokyo, despite claims of traditionalism, Japanese shoppers didn't appear very keen to buy the whale meat on offer. If whale meat was in great demand, you'd expect diners in this city of 12 million to be queuing up by the thousands. Humpbacks Spared - But Not Minkes or Fins
2007-12-19 23:38:00 (Artist credit: Christian Lassen)Eh, seems the news releases are causing a little confusion about Japan suspending the whale hunt this season. To clarify, it appears they will sign off on suspending the hunt for the 50+ humpback whales they had planned to kill. They still continue with their plans to hunt down and kill over 900 Minke and Fin whales.Japan on verge of dropping humpback kill - but will still pursue MinkesSo it's a semi-victory at this point in time. Still something to celebrate, but yet more work needs to be done and the protests need to continue to be heard.Screw this. 2007-12-19 22:21:00 (Artist credit: Christian Lassen)The Prime Minister of Australia backs the anti-whaling campaign to stop Japanese whaling near Antartica. The pressure is on internationally, with over 2100 signatures coming in via an online petition, as of last night.Excerpt: By last night, more than 2100 people had signed an online petition urging the Japanese Government "to abandon its abhorrent whaling programme", including actress Lucy Lawless, singer Hollie Smith and radio and television presenter Marcus Lush. Signatures had come from Papua New Guinea, France, the United States - and Japan. According to the email alert I just received from Blue Voice, Japan has basically buckled from the pressure and has now suspended their whale hunt! Kudos to Chris Dodd
2007-12-18 21:47:00 Hooray for Chris Dodd , who succeeded in standing up for our freedoms. How you ask? For speaking up in opposition to the Intelligence Committee's FISA bill, which would have granted retroactive immunity to the telcom corporations.Senators Feingold, Boxer, Kennedy, Wyden, Brown, and Nelson also joined Dodd in standing up to President Bush on this matter. If this had passed, companies like AT&T would have been granted immunity in the matter of warrantless wiretapping on the part of the Bush Administration in it's spying of American citizens.Dodd promises to filibuster this issue again in January if it continues to be part of FISA legislation.Read more here: Telecom Immunity Bill off the TableIt's a rare victory, so again, my kudos to Chris Dodd and the other Senators who fought for our rights today against the tyrannical Bush Administration. Our fight for freedom of speech continues. 2007-12-15 18:14:00 (Image credit: The Flag Pole) Growing up, I didn't take politics seriously. At least not in the way of being active or all that outspoken on too many issues. To make preserving our environment a top priority. And to also preserve our planet's wildlife, both on the land and in our seas. These issues still remain vitally important to me today, but I've also become much more aware, much more educated, and more vocal about them.We take a lot of things for granted when we're younger and don't necessarily give much thought to who is running our city, state, or our country. There's a lot I could say on this subject, but I'll try to restrain myself ;-) First of all, as a parent, you are responsible for what your children read. And if you picked out the books yourself, you have no one to blame but yourself. Second of all, homosexuality, whether you like it or not, agree with it or not, has been a part of the human (and non-human) species since the dawn of mankind. Marine Mammal Rights
2007-11-30 21:34:00 (Image credit: Howie Cooke @ Surfers for Cetaceans) Somethings amiss in peoples' DNA make-up when they take perverse pleasure in harassing marine life or wildlife. In the news recently, a jet skier went out of his way to mess around with a pod of dolphins in Scotland. Excerpt: ....a jet-skier ride into a family of dolphins and send them into a panic, a court has heard. The large group of around 20 animals became stressed when they were chased through the water by the jet-skier, diving under the water and returning to the surface only seconds later to breathe. Thankfully there were witnesses and this case goes to court in a couple of weeks. I suggest that one of his punishments should be to be thrown into the water and another jet skier harasses him while he struggles to stay afloat and to breathe. Let him become disoriented, confused, and panicked. Something else that gives further weight to the argument that dolphins should NOT be held in captivity anywhere for any reason:... Scientific Whale Slaughter - Yeah, Right
2007-11-27 16:50:00 It's interesting that the Japanese do not eat a lot of whale meat, which is further indication of how unnecessary their whale hunts are. It's also interesting that they claim to not care what the rest of the world thinks about their whale hunting, and yet they are seemingly scrambling about, finding ways to use the whales to their maximum benefit (aka greed) while still calling it "scientific research." Victory for Whales, Not So Much for the Dolphins
2007-11-26 11:22:00 "The Labor Party of Australia has won the election and they have won by a landslide and this could be wonderful news for the whales of Antarctica." More to this on Sea Shepherd Have you ever been to Sea World and seen the dolphins? I haven't and always refused to go when friends would ask. Why? Because I have a problem with dolphins being in captivity. This is a very controversial issue in the marine wildlife world. People love dolphins, but they often suffer a failure of empathy and imagination. They do not make the connection that to bring a dolphin into these preposterously unnatural circumstances requires that dolphins be ripped from their natural environment, kidnapped from their families and pod mates, held in nets, carried in trucks, hoisted into planes and flown to distant locations. Many die in the process. Those that survive are condemned to a life in a cement tank, listening to the interminable hum of the filtration system and the screams of the audience. If yo... 10 Cool Things About Dolphins
More articles from this author:2007-11-26 05:59:00 There was a story not too long ago, about a pod of dolphins that saved some swimmers off the coast in New Zealand. Why were they being saved? A great white shark was trying to get to the swimmers, and a group of dolphins just suddenly appeared, surrounding the swimmers, and slapping the water with their tails to ward off the shark. Pretty damn cool! This little story starts off a great top ten list of why Dolphins are so cool. 10 Cool Things About Dolphins A sub-species of the dolphin family is the Irrawaddy dolphin. Reports are mixed on just how vulnerable the Irrawaddy is. It does appear that they have become threatened of late and are in danger of becoming extinct. They travel in small pods of around 10 dolphins and spread out over large areas. They tend to be found in rivers or in shallow marine waters in Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and North Australia. Their appearance reminds me a little of the Beluga Whales. If you're curious to learn more about the Irrawaddy dol... 1, 2, 3, 4 |
