Anyone watched the IPL matches yesterday? Are they great or what? Strange thing I didn?t get the interest for them in the beginning of the series. It took me some three four matches to see that, man? all of them are there? All the players I?ve admired in the field are fighting amongst themselves. Orange caps, Purple caps, dancing girls, bollywood stars, etc, etc,. Man?I think I?m falling in love with T20 cricket. So here I am, enjoying my newly found interest of the even shorter version of the game and suddenly? ?Channel 1 Breaking News ?. Now I?m familiar with this. Had anyone been there with me watching the match, I would have betted all my life?s worth that some commonplace, prosaic news was about to be delivered by the sister channel of sirasa. Any other day, any other channel, I would have clung to my chair and expected to hear something like another bomb blast or that Prabhakaran has been sleighed or some incident that effected most if not all the people in the country ...

Islam - Gods And Quacks
2008-05-04 04:38:00
I refuse to believe that the following email, titled ?The Message?, I received two days ago happened to find my inbox out of coincidence. My earlier post on atheism seemed to have gained such popularity and seemed to have raised a few concerns that the first email I ever received regarding the Islam religion happen to land in my inbox the day after. However, when asked, my Muslim friend denied his involvement in any such thing and since I believe him, I guess it was just a coincidence. My earlier post was nothing about the teachings or details of Islam. It was a mere inquiry to the fact that atheists are consistently questioned by the others, especially by Muslims, about their lack of faith in any religion and most of the times are casted as infidels. Although there were several comments about the teachings of and the way people follow Islam, I tried my best to not touch upon the contents of a specific religion, just to make sure that I do not instigate a holy war. However, after rece...

What's Wrong Being An Atheist?
2008-04-29 19:06:00
So what are you? A Buddhist, a Christian, a Catholic, a Muslim or someone that ?belongs? to another religion? Or are you an Atheist ? What made you become the person you are today, atheist or otherwise? Will you be willing to defend your beliefs through the rest of this post? I?ve been having lengthy arguments with one of my good Muslim friends about this whole idea of the existence of god. But this post is not about that. The argument on the existence of god is something which I would happily deviate from for I have no divine knowledge to be able to answer that. But as many would say, ?It?s a matter of belief?, and I?d like to stick with it. So the matter at hand is: What?s wrong being an atheist? My parents are Buddhists. (I don?t know how to define a Buddhist, but if the definition dictates that a Buddhist is someone who follows the teachings of Lord Buddha, then yes, they are Buddhists). So does that make me a Buddhist? To a certain extent, yes, I guess. I?ve bee...

Back From Hibernation
2008-04-24 16:48:00
So how?s the blogosphere doing without me? :) Well, it?s been four months neda?, since I?ve last posted here. Last four months have been the most strenuous times of my life. With loads of problems with my internship, struggling to keep my undergraduate degree intact and all; it?s so relieving to find myself back in the little community I?ve once belonged. Well, the google people haven?t deleted my blog and Indi hasn?t removed me from Kottu, so, guess I?m doing ok then. SO, How?s everyone doing? I see cerno is still after his dream: butchering the google map :). Keep up the good work buddy. And so many Sinhalese blogs have appeared, hmm??.. Promising. Well, what to write??? Politics??? Naaahh?? sucks. Seems I?ve lost all that passion to write about, or even mention, that damned subject. So till I find something else to write about?? Just wanted everyone to know that I?m not dead. (yeah, like anyone would care :))

A Musical Treat For The New Year ? The Voice Of God
2008-01-03 06:15:00
Thought of starting off this year by giving a treat to all of you who have shared thoughts with me through my blog during the past year. Well, it?s nothing much. Just a piece of music of the kind I like. I?ve long been a fan of Andrea Bocelli, in my opinion, the best singer in the world. A comment which is not out of sympathy for his blindness but out of the endless moments I?ve drowned in his voice and felt truly happy about life. A few months ago, I came across his concert ?Under the desert sky? with David Frost and it simply is one of the best musical concerts I?ve come across. So all the bloggers in Sri Lanka, with warm wishes for a peaceful and happy new year, I present you the voice of god. (I?m not a believer in god, but if there were one, as Celin Dion said, his voice would sound like this)

If It's Not Child Abuse...
2007-12-22 18:04:00
If anyone has ever noticed, there?s a general comment we hear from anyone who has reached his/her mid age. ?Oh the times have change?, ?In our childhood days, things used to be so different?. I?ve heard this from my parents a lot. I?m sure they have heard it from my grandparents a lot. And there?s no reason why my children (if I have any, hopefully, someday) won?t hear it from me. I don?t see why this comment would stop from being passed as inheritance to every generation. I?m still in my early 20s but I too am inclined to say it. It?s obvious in the sense that with each generation the world is changing so rapidly that every one of us is bound to say it sometime or the other. Why am I saying these??? Not because I have a longing to keep the loop going, but because some tv program I?ve been watching ?with disgust? these days makes me want to write something about the effects of current television trends on little children. Star in a minute The program?s name is ?...

How To Beat Amaradeva With SMS
2007-12-22 02:50:00
Just to be on the safe side so as not to cast myself as the culture king of Sri Lanka, I?ll keep my part of original thought within this post to a minimal. Over the nine months I?ve been in blogging, my obsession about the Sri Lankan oldies music and my disgust on the current trends of music (now, it?s not just music: everything) in my country have mostly been the topic of interest in my blog posts. I just don?t know what troubles me so much (it?s easier for one to get confused in today?s complex environment). Is it the fact that I can?t bear others enjoying ?Jundai Gundai?, is it the fact that I can?t appreciate ?Kindurangana? going places and distributing TVs to those who watch the drama or is it the fact that Iraj?s single-line songs are more popular than Sunil Edirisinghes ?Sandakada Pahanaka? these days? I don?t know. I really don?t know. However, I found this article on Irudina this week (16/12/2007) written by Prof. Sucharitha Gamlath about Amar adeva's 80th birt...

The Parliamentarian English
2007-11-28 08:07:00
Well, I'm not really the cut & paste kinda guy, but this is worth sharing.I found this in my inbox today.Don't think it's actually written by a parliamentarian, but it's so much fun if you actually imagine it in that context. Enjoy. The Sri Lanka Parliamentarian's English Exam (P.E.E.)! This is a true transcript, of an essay written by a Sri Lankan M.P., at the Parliamentarian's English Exam ( P.E.E.). As many Sri Lankan Parliamentarians Failed it, P.E.E. Is not done, in the Sri Lankan Parliament any more. The Sri Lanka Elefant There is a three Sri Lanka elefants. One is a home elefant. Two is a Val Elefant. Three is a UNP party animal. The elefant has 4 leggs. Elefant has Long thrunk, hanging between 2 white iworry tasks, some have on both side of Hanging thrunk. These iworry is very moneyful. Some bad men rape the Val Elefant, to get iworry and sell for money. Elefants like to eat banananas, Bunns, gnanakathas, like that. It like to drink milk and toddy ...

We report, You decide
2007-11-22 04:04:00
I?d be surprised if I?m able to find a single person who hasn?t heard this line over the years. You haven?t? Shame on you? It?s the motto of the ?news? broadcast of the ?Peoples? Channel?. Ok, let me stop waffling around. For those who don?t know, I?m talking about Sirasa news and if you are an ardent ?Sirasa Fan?, this post is not for you. I don?t know to what extent others will agree with me, but as far as I see, Sirasa news is just Sirasa TV?s prime means of promoting their channel and attacking their opponents: in short, it?s their way of raving that they are the best. I?ll be following up with the examples and how the general lineup of their news bulletin is organized hoping that you will verify it yourself (I report, you decide). We all know how Sirasa is engaged in a never ending battle with two parliamentarians in Sri Lanka. Mervin Silva and Wimal Weerawansa. I think (I think) that as proportion, majority of the Sri Lankan people despise these two characters for wh...

For Once: Yanni Beats SuperStar.
2007-11-17 18:43:00
Just wanted to ramble a few lines about some great music I enjoyed recently (something I believe you all ought to delve in) and a little incident weaved around it. I have been a Yanni fan for quite sometime now but have never been mesmerized so much as I?m now with his Concert Event 2006. Released last year, I believe it is the most fascinating concert I?ve ever had the fortune to enjoy. Too bad it took me so long to get my hands on it (I feel I?m becoming lazy and having trouble keeping up with the pace of the outside world). At a time when the majority of the Sri Lankan people are obsessed with ?Super Star?, I concern myself lucky to have the ability to enjoy something far more superior: something I call music. Ok, the incident I promised to tell you took place between me and one of my friends not so long ago. He is as obsessed with superstar as anyone else is right now and a few days back he came to me with a set of superstar CDs to make copies(the ones available at ...

An Inconvenient Truth
2007-11-06 19:57:00
I just finished watching the 2006 award winning documentary by Al Gore, the presidential candidate in the 2000 US elections, named ?An Inconvenient Truth ? on global warming. It never occurred to me that this was as serious a problem until I realized the gravity of it, seeing it with my own eyes through this documentary. It really is an inconvenient truth. A truth that we choose not to care - as I have done all these years, just giving a half deaf ear to it ? and I?m sure that most people are yet to realize that we are in the middle of a major climate change, a change that?s going to change our lives and the lives of our future generations, drastically. It really amazes me how a convincing presentation, as this one is, can change the perception of a person to a great deal. Now, I?m not going to buy a hybrid car or a solar panel to my house just to go crazy about this whole idea and change my lifestyle overnight. But there?s a lot I can do in my individual capacity to make a chan...

Talk about the worst days (or should I say the most restless days) of my life. With endless plans to reset the clock to 25 hours, just so I could sleep at least 5 hours after all the work, the projects, the assignments and all other things I get myself involved in at the university. I couldn?t find time, or it?s better to say I couldn?t find something worth enough to blog about, for the past few weeks. The same old politics, the same old lies and the same old (new) crap that?s roaming my television. But, just thought that I should share this one. Not because any of these things will be of any importance to you. But because I love sharing it. I?ll keep the details to a minimum coz I have to attend the university for another year after thisJ Ok, let?s start by saying that I happen to hold (now I?ve completed my tenure) a position in the university where I represented two student groups, a position that involved dealing with the administration on behalf of the students. I Wish My Father Was a Politician
2007-09-22 18:00:00
I really do. Think about all the atrocities I can commit and walk away as clean as I could, just for the heck of it.I hate to write this post(possibly the only one I would write for the month) on some raw model of a typical minister's son, knowing for a fact that I could never enjoy the freedom he does nor that I could ever get away from a felony, a thousand times smaller than what he would commit.Anyway, for those who were fascinated by Mervin's son, here you go: Read the full story.VIC: I guess it was wise of you to change your blog to "A Voice in Colombo" machang :) . Coz, Sri Lanka is no more the "Land Like No Other". At least not in the sense you, (as a matter of fact) we all, intended it to be. It's the "Land of Politic ian s" and nothing else.

Music & Lyrics (The movie) and Lord Buddha
2007-08-26 20:12:00
It?s a mixed feeling, relishing a great movie for almost two hours only to find something quite disturbing at the very end. I was watching this movie ?Music and Lyrics ? yesterday, where the glamorous performances of Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore spelled a nicely woven love story in an accordingly glamorous manner. (For those who have not seen the movie) The plot involves the life struggle of a failed pop artist who tries to survive in the modern music industry by whatever means he seems fit and a young lady who has been deprived of her borne talent for words and lyrics by the wicked world (Well, that?s the best I could summarize it). You thought this was a movie review??? Well, you?ve got me completely wrong. I?m the least qualified person for that category. Here?s what I really wanted to discuss. Towards the end of the movie, there?s a stage performance and the young girl (not Drew Barrymore (oh, I so much wished), but another girl who apparently plays the role of...

My Culture, My Obsession
2007-08-12 17:50:00
In the six months that I have existed in the Sri Lankan blogging community I feel I have blogged about our music and our culture more than anything else that I wanted to talk about. Though as much as I?m disappointed about the state of these things at present, I feel I should stop. From what I?ve witnessed in the past few months, I feel that the members in the current Sri Lankan blogosphere are either unaware of the situation due to their lack of experience in the grass root level or that they seem to rationalize the current trends in a more international context which I find difficult to concur with. Either way, the majority of them seem to accept these changes the way they are and at times, even rationalize them without seeing the big picture of things. So I?m going to summarize everything I need to express in this post, once and for all. It?s going to be a mixture of everything: from music to media and from dress code to new lifestyles. Everything I feel misplaced in the Sri Lank...

A New Breed Of Bloggers
2007-08-10 18:50:00
Regular visitors in kottu should have noticed by now the emergence of several personal blogs from a group of children whose posts have conquered the blogosphere in the very recent days. It seems that in some level, blogging in Sri Lanka has taken a leap and a very good one at that. Most of the above blogs seem to be owned by the children of Horizon Lanka Academy that Mr. Wanninayaka initiated (and I must say, great work sir, we need more people like you). Even though these little bloggers post about general topics such as about themselves, their villages or their schools at present, I believe this could be a plus point in the Sri Lankan blog community in the years to come. It has been the case that blogging in Sri Lanka was restricted (not in the absolute sense, but in the sense that people didn?t choose to) to the English speaking class mainly from the urban areas or the Sri Lankans living abroad. It seems that that cycle is changing. The idea that the general public of th...

Selling Weed
2007-08-09 19:10:00
By some misfortune bestowed upon me from my birth, I can?t seem to keep my mouth shut about certain things that I see distasteful and harming our country. It has been six months since I started blogging and most of the posts carried with them the negative, downtrodden aspects of our country. I wrote several times earlier of the denouncing Sri Lankan music culture and how we are moving into one that makes the listeners blunt as they could be. This song I found recently seems to encapsulate every thing I?ve been trying to say. I?m sure that most of you are familiar with the ?Paata paata mal? (pushpe) song and that by now it could be the favorite song of some of you. Surely enough it has a cool rhythm, a cool voice and no wonder why it is the song that?s on the lips of the three year old kids in my neighboring house. They seem to get hold of the song better than most nursery rhymes. The song has appeared in most of the top music charts (those song lists compiled by the commer...

2007-08-02 19:30:00
I?ve written several posts earlier about the downward moving music culture in Sri Lanka and have received a considerable number of comments supporting either way, for and against. During the process I came to realize that whatever we can achieve to retain the original soothing Sri Lankan music would ultimately be beaten by the discretion each person has over his or her selection of which music to prefer. Though as terrible as it is the damage done by the private media in ruining this country?s music culture, we are unable to blame anyone. As most people would argue, it is completely to the listener to decide what music he/she is going to listen to. Whether it is utter crap or something of high aesthetic value, it?s eventually the choice of the listener. All we could do, if we want to retain the beautiful and ?meaningful? music culture we had, is to provide them a good pool of choices to choose from. This may be nothing to some people and might even be called something that?s ver...

The Thoppigala Panacea
2007-08-01 04:44:00
Thoppigala conquered: and everybody lived happily ever after. As much as being proud about the valor of our soldiers and as much as being disgusted about the conduct of the politicians following this victory, nothing makes me even more disturbing than the effortless manner with which the politicians have turned the citizens of this country into a group of utter idiots. The Thoppigala siege has become the latest shield of the government and façade they use to elope the hardships of running the government. Former Air force commander Harry Gunathilaka had this to say: ?This is a victory of the Sri Lankan forces, no doubts about that. Having or not having celebrations is a concern of the politicians. I wouldn?t recommend the Sri Lankan people to applaud. Neither can I lie. This area was controlled by the Sri Lankan forces from 1992 to 1994. But I cannot recall this much of celebrations at the time? ?Yes, the Sinhalese people in the south are applauding. But I?m not so ...

How To Measure Sri Lankan Stupidity
2007-07-04 05:55:00
They say that we are among the best in terms of literacy. They say we are at the very top in the Asian countries. How often do we see people rave about this fact to say that we are one of the most intelligent nations in the world? ?.but are we really? I used to say I?m proud about been Sri Lanka n. Most people would still say so. I?m proud about the country of course, its history, its scenic beauty and every other lifeless subject I come across, but not about the people. There?s nothing to be proud about the people of our country. In fact, collectively, we are one of the stupidest nations in the world. Evidence is everywhere you see. The people of this country have been the victims of cunning manipulation from two prominent groups over the years - the politicians and the private media. They know extremely well how stupid we are. As for the politics, the politicians know that we are dumb and that the people of this country are easily malleable. But on stage, they say that the...

The Varsity Suckers
2007-06-18 08:22:00
How do people grow up to be geniuses but jerks? What is the relationship between intelligence and empathy or humaneness? From the very highest rank of the social hierarchy, we observe people with immense intelligence and talent but with very little concern to the outside world. Either they are so engrossed in their expert fields so as to forget their potential to serve the human society or they intentionally abandon their ?human? role in pursuit of some futile reputation which is completely alien to me.Obviously, you should be wondering by now, ?What the hell is this guy speaking about??. Knowledge: How much is too much?Since sometime now, I have been thinking about the conduct of ?some? (obviously not all) lecturers of the University I study in. It is a growing concern in my faculty that the uneasiness between certain lecturers and the students is at its peak. Sharing a common view with the rest of the student body, I observe that certain lecturers are inherently working against the...

It has always been the case with the human race that whenever an invention is brought up there are always people who are ready to exploit it in the most negative way it was supposed to use. This was the case when Einstein discovered the certain concepts of nuclear fusion which ultimately led to the disastrous H-bomb. Though not in the same context and magnanimity, there has been a surge of rather inappropriate uses of blogging in the Sri Lankan blogosphere recently. Apart from the usual exploitation of the ?anonymous? luxury tag to rebuke the writers, we observed several blogs dedicated to discrediting famous figures in the society. Those who came across the two blogs that slang mud on late Prof.V.K.Samaranayake and cricket commenter Ranjith Fernando should now have a good idea of what I intend to write in the rest of this post. Now, I did not invent the concept of blogging or nor do I have the right to influence people on what they write in their blogs. Prof.V.K.Samaranayake - The Legacy Lives On
2007-06-08 04:14:00
One of Sri Lanka?s most renowned luminaries in the IT arena bid his farewells to the country yesterday leaving a legacy that is unprecedented. Prof .V.K.Samar anayake, the Chairman of the ICTA and a forerunner in the uprising of the IT sector in Sri Lanka, passed away at the age of 68. As a person who is enjoying the fruits of this great man?s seeds, I?m inclined to write a few words in his memory. As much as controversial some of his actions were, Prof.V.K.Samaranayake?s view was to bring home the luxuries of IT that were enjoyed by the rest of the world. His view was to use the information technology in our own way, devise mechanisms to make the technology adapt to the circumstances in Sri Lanka and to get the whole country, especially the younger generation, involved in the Sri Lankan IT evolution. The ICTA, which flourished and made considerable contribution to the Development of Sri Lanka, was his premier channel of service. The concept and the implementation of the ?Nenasala? p...

?We followed the lead of the suspects who were accompanying us to disclose the places where they hid their weapons. At the site, the suspects attempted to throw grenades at us and we were compelled to shoot for our self-protection. In this encounter, we are sorry to say, none of the suspects were apprehended again; all of them are dead?Feel like a familiar statement? If you are Sri Lankan, you should be familiar with this. The above statement has been the excuse for several police-lead executions in the very recent past in Sri Lanka. It seems that the Sri Lankan police has assumed the role of the judicial system and is cleansing the society by eradicating the suspected criminals without giving them a fair trial. The whole country was shocked at the news of the five murders in Delgoda last month. No person with a human heart would have approved the atrocity and would want nothing but the death penalty to the people who committed the crime. A series of incidents followed these murders....

Social Television

Some of my recent posts on Sirasa and its conduct attracted mixed responses from a wide group of readers. To my fancy, this turned out to be a good topic to do some more digging, search for more facts and initiate discussions on. Especially, the email which I received on Sirasa Kumariya and which I posted consequently proved to be an invitation for readers with different attitudes to share their thoughts on. Some questioned the validity of my blog title; the ?Independent Observer? part. Some had suggested watching some other channel and let Sirasa do their own business and some, but a very few, was agreeing to my views of how the Sri Lankan television channels are making a negative impact on the viewers. Well, this is a small attempt to answer all those. What is the true meaning of television? What is its purpose? Are there any guidelines on how a television channel should serve its viewers? These were some of the questions that kept me wondering whenever I think of the social destru...

Five months of short naps; Five months of mental slavery? I finally finished my CIMA exams and a break of three whole days without books is driving me nuts so I?m back to blogging. So, how you doin? Care for some wibble-wobble thoughts? How many of you have come across the burden of answering this question in your childhood ? what do you want to be when you grow up? Or the famous quote - ?Baba loku unaama kawuru wennada kemathi?? Some of you may even have thought that this must be one of the ways they use to harass us in our early days. Of course, the answers are quite fascinating. It?s always ?I want to be a doctor?, ?I want to be an Engineer? or ?I want to be a pilot? with the occasional ?I want to be daddy? story coming from a young devil :-). Obviously, these do change, most of the time. As time goes by and as we have some idea of what it is like to be in the REAL world, most of these child fantasies crawl through the back door and grant us permission to do some REAL...

A Great Summary on the World Cup
2007-05-12 21:06:00
Today as I read the "Irudina" newspaper I came across this article by Prof.Sucharitha Gamlath which I thought is worthwhile to share with you all. I had already written a post on the lame conduct of the Sri Lankan people in the vicinity of the recently concluded world cup and it is better to listen to a wise man on the same matter but in an advanced perspective. So, here I've dug up the pdf of the article ( 01: 02:). If anyone's needing a translation just leave me a request and I'll have it translated asap.
