Senate Watch: News & Notes
2008-05-22 22:26:00 Let's take a look at the latest news from Senate races around the country. Click here for our latest Senate rankings (updated: 5/20/08).ColoradoDemocratic Congressman Mark Udall (pictured) has opened a statistically significant lead for the first time according to a new Rasmussen poll. Udall leads former Republican Congressman Bob Schaffer 47%-41% in the race to replace retiring Republican Wayne Allard. The poll finds Udall besting Schaffer by 12 points among unaffiliated voters, a crucial group to watch in a state where Republicans still outnumber Democrats. The poll also finds Democrats leading at the presidential level, with Barack Obama ahead of John McCain 48%-42% and leading among unaffiliated voters by 21 points. Though it has gone to the Democrats just once in the past 40 years, Colorado is certainly a state Obama will target in the fall. Democrats have had success in the state in recent years and if Obama can boost turnout and attract independent voters, that could tr... More About: News , Watch , Notes

Senate Watch: Rankings
2008-05-21 01:47:00 It's for another supersized edition of our 2008 Senate rankings, as we look at the latest news, polling, and fundraising numbers from all 35 races across the country. As has been the case all year, our latest rankings look good for the Democrats. The party is currently poised to pick up 3-6 seats in 2008. Meanwhile, the cycle has been near disastrous for the GOP, who continue to battle an anti-Republican mood among the electorate. To make matters worse, the party failed to recruit top tier challengers to a number of races that could have been competitive this year. With limited opportunities to play offense and a growing number of seats in danger, Republicans will be looking at an increasing Democratic majority in the 111th Congress .How would you rank 'em? Ad Wars: Oregon's Smith Seeks "Middle Ground"
2008-05-20 16:41:00 Check out our entire video library at Political Realm TV.Senate Watch: LouisianaThe NRSC is stretching a little bit in its latest attack, this time against Louisiana Democrat Mary Landrieu. Taking a page out of the 2004 presidential playbook, the web ad portrays Landrieu as a flip-flopper, citing several recent bills that Landrieu voted both for and against. Of course, it's a ridiculous charge given the nature of the Senate, but the NRSC is apparently hoping voters are stupid. The most egregious part of the video, however, is the effort to suggest Landrieu lacks leadership Louisiana voters deserve because she hasn't made an endorsement in the Democratic presidential primary. Seriously? No doubt the NRSC is disappointed that Landrieu hasn't endorsed Obama, so that they could attempt to tie her to his "bitter" comments (that ploy hasn't been so successful in recent House contests, just ask the NRCC). Good Reads: After Hillary
2008-05-18 18:32:00 Larry Sabato: How Could John McCain Win In November? It's obvious to just about everyone that, at least theoretically, the Democrats have a near-perfect climate for presidential victory in 2008. A deeply unpopular Republican President is mired around 30 percent in the polls; last week, Bush was at 28 percent, a couple points higher than Richard Nixon on the day he resigned. Bush hasn't seen majority backing in three years or even a miserable 40 percent support level in two years. General Petraeus' optimism notwithstanding, a large majority of Americans believe that the Iraq war wasn't worth fighting and should be phased out as soon as reasonably possible. The economy has tanked, gas prices are through the roof, and an incredible eight in ten Americans think the country is seriously off on the wrong track -- usually a death knell for the White House party.John McCain, as the nominee of the Republican Party, is saddled with the legacy of the 30 percent President.
