Saturday Stew: Primary Fatigue
2008-06-07 14:03:00 Saturday Stew is a weekend open thread for readers to sound off on the latest political news. This week in the stew we're talking about the impact of the long Democratic race that has finally drawn to a conclusion.Barack Obama clinched the Democratic nomination Tuesday, exactly five months after the primary season began in Iowa. Hillary Clinton didn't concede Tuesday evening, but is preparing to endorse Obama today in Washington, concluding one of the longest and most intriguing primaries in American political history. In what ways has the long primary race helped the Democratic Party and it's nominee? In what ways has the race hurt the Democratic Party and it's nominee?Ultimately, has the process been beneficial or detrimental for Democrats? In what ways would you like to see the primary process changed in the future? Were you satisfied with the Florida-Michigan ruling?Which Democrat, Obama or Clinton, would be the strongest nominee?Which candidate, Obama or McCain , is better pos... Picture This: Rezko
2008-06-05 21:28:00 This is not a face Barack Obama wanted to see in the news again as he begins his general election campaign. A federal jury convicted Antoin "Tony" Rezko, a Chicago developer with ties to Obama, on 16 of 24 corruption charges yesterday. Still, it's probably better for the Obama campaign that the conviction came now rather than in the fall. "I'm saddened by today's verdict. This isn't the Tony Rezko I knew, but now he has been convicted by a jury on multiple charges that once again shine a spotlight on the need for reform," Obama said Wednesday. "I encourage the General Assembly to take whatever steps are necessary to prevent these kinds of abuses in the future." More About: Picture , Picture This

In a preview of a message we will probably see down the line, the RNC using the words of former Democratic rivals against Barack Obama in one video, "Democrats vs. Obama." The most damning comments come from Hillary Clinton , who in March touted her own experience and that of John McCain , while questioning Obama's readiness. The RNC also hits Obama's experience, suggesting he has limited job experience and few accomplishments. "Does Barack Obama's thin resume prepare him to hold the most powerful office in the world?" It's another message you can expect to hear more of as the general election moves forward.Senate Watch: ColoradoThe NRSC has released a new web video that essentially sums up its case in Colorado in a four word phrase: "Bould... Quotable: This Is Our Moment
2008-06-04 05:52:00 "America, this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past. Our time to bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face. Our time to offer a new direction for the country we love. The journey will be difficult. The road will be long. I face this challenge with profound humility and knowledge of my own limitations. But I also face it with limitless faith in the capacity of the American people. Because if we are willing to work for it, and fight for it, and believe in it, then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth. Senate Watch: News & Notes
2008-06-03 20:04:00 Let's take a look at the latest news from Senate races around the country. Click here for our latest Senate rankings (updated: 5/20/08).AlabamaThough the party is expanding the playing field across the country, Democrats have gained little traction in their efforts to unseat Republican Senator Jeff Sessions (pictured). Sessions continues to hold a huge lead over Democratic challenger Vivian Figures in his bid for a third term. The Republican leads 62%-29% according to the Rasmussen poll, with 72% of the electorate holding a favorable view of the incumbent. Nearly a quarter of the voters surveyed were unsure about Figures, which suggests much of the state is still unfamiliar with her. After a close win in his first election in 1996, Sessions won easily in 2002 and appears to be cruising to another victory this cycle. Alabama is not expect to be closely contested on the presidential level and with Sessions holding a nearly 300:1 cash advantage, the chances look increasingly slim f... 2008-06-01 07:04:00 Protesters, most supporting Hillary Clinton , gathered in Washington, DC outside of the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting today. The group demanded all the votes from Florida and Michigan be counted and the states' full delegations be seated at the Denver convention. The crowds were no doubt disappointed by the committee's ruling, however, which gave the delegates from both states only half a vote at the convention. That result virtually eliminates Clinton's already slim chances of winning the delegates, super or otherwise, needed for the Democratic nomination. Her campaign may still take their fight to Denver.Barack Obama had urged his supporters not to protest at the event. More About: President , Picture , Protests

In Puerto Rico, the group is touting Clinton's health care plan. The group is airing "Squeezed" in Montana and South Dakota, which focuses on Clinton's plan to reduce the economic burden on middle class families.Gubernatorial Watch: MissouriRepublican Congress man Kenny Hulshof touts his background as a prosecutor, while hitting rival Sarah Steelman for being too Jefferson City (Missouri speak for 'too Washington'). 2008-05-28 20:00:00 John McCain appeared with President Bush publicly for less than a minute as the commander in chief joined the Arizona senator for a closed-press fundraiser in Phoenix yesterday. The event was moved from the Convention Center to a private residence to further avoid the public eye.Indeed, McCain walks a fine line in his relationship with the current White House resident. With his fundraising lagging far behind Democratic counterparts Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton , McCain needs Bush to help bring in the huge amounts of cash that helped him win in 2000 and 2004. But with President Bush's popularity reaching historic lows, McCain does not want to appear too close. "He's holding a fund-raiser with George Bush behind closed doors in Arizona. No cameras, no reporters. And we all know why," Obama told reporters. "Senator McCain doesn't want to be seen, hat in hand, with the president whose failed policies he promises to continue for another four years." More About: George W
