Accepted to Attend Camp Obama!

Call me shameless, but I like to give myself plugs whenever and wherever possible.  I received official notification from Obama for America, Sen. Barack Obama's official campaign team, that I am accepted to attend the Camp Obama event on August 1 and 2.I had initially applied but was turned away because I waited until about 2 days before the event, which had filled up with applicants rather earlier than I expected.  This time though, I was certainly prepared, by filing my application with plenty of time to spare.I think this opportunity is so darn cool, but I only have so much time to dedicate since I am both a special education teacher and graduate student working toward my Education Specialist/Doctorate program beginning this fall.  Either way, this will set me up to work with political operatives throughout the Kansas City area and nation alike.  I'm very exicted.If anybody has any experiences from their personal Camp Obama training, please feel free to...

Well, I made my second official application bid to attend Sen. Barack Obama 's "Camp Obama," this time during hte first week of August.  I made my initial application for mid-July, but received notification from the campaign that they were all booked through August.  I was slightly frustrated because they continued to advertise the mid-July Camp Obama dates as "upcoming events" on their website, which sounded as though there were still slots available to attend.The application process is by no means rigorous, but I did take my time and answer the essay-like questions with patience and determination.  I think to attend the Camp Obama event would be an absolutely great opportunity to learn more in-depth information about the campaign process, but aligned with how to better serve Sen. Former Professor Praises Sen. Barack Obama

I stumbled across an interesting online artice written by John Cunningham at the Corcord Monitor, which included a letter written from Martha Minnow, former law professor of Sen. Barack Obama .The letter is written to basically endorse Obama, not just as a presidential candidate, but a person.  Very high praises and commends are given by Minnow.  While I do not care to copy-and-paste full articles, some exceptions are necessary. I had the privilege of attending a recent reception in Manchester for Martha Minow, a Harvard Law School professor who taught Barack Obama and is now a devoted supporter of his presidential campaign. Professor Minow is a beautifully modest person but an impassioned speaker. Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 4th, which marks Sen. Barack Obama's 46th birthday.In an effort to celebrate Obama's birthday and combine campaigning efforts, the Obama campaign team is encouraging local grassroots groups to coordinate efforts around the country--wear Obama products, gather with supporters, host a fundraiser etc.I have learned of a few organizations that will be canvassing and hosting car washes, while spreading some Obama-love on his birthday.To date, I have not learned if any events are planned in or around the Kansas City metropolitan area.  As of now, I am scheduled to be in Iowa that weekend, so I'll be looking for any events scheduled around the Des Moines area.If you know of any events planned around Kansas City or Des Moines on August 4th, please feel free to post your information at this site for others to read.Kansas City for Sen. Wanna Know if Your Neighbors Contributed to a Campaign?

Just in case you thought there weren't enough ways that you had to "keep up those Jones" neighbors of yours, now you can even do so regarding campaign contributions.The New York Times has included an online feature that lists every campaign contributor to each presidential candidate.  The list includes a cumulative total of the first and second quarter, which law states an individual can only donate $2,300 per quarter.I have made a contribution this past year to the Sen. Dennis Kucinich Hospitalized

The Democratic Underground reports the following: Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich remains hospitalized Wednesday in Ohio after aides say he suffered a severe case of food poisoning. Kucinich spokesman Andy Juniewicz said the Ohio congressman started feeling ill Sunday before flying to Florida for a campaign appearance. He became sicker in Florida, and was forced to cut the trip short to return to Cleveland.Here's to a quick recovery.

Back in Kansas City Following Iowa Trip

I had a very pleasant weekend visiting different parts of Iowa , though the primary purpose of my trip was to attend a wedding in Tama, IA. I contributed in a previous blog about the interests of many Iowans to not be the focus of presidential candidates so early in this race. Though campaign strategists and volunteers who do not live in Iowa will definitely disagree, it is true. Nothing can be summed up more than a barn's rooftop located just east of Marshalltown, IA. It read in large painted letters, "Stay in Your State Hillary!"

Recent Trip to Iowa (Copy from last weekend)

Yesterday I began my weekend-long trip to the Hawkeye State, visiting several small towns along the I-80 border. My girlfriend's family are life-long proud Iowa ns in Anita and then we'll be heading to Tama, IA to attend a friend's wedding. I always enjoy my trips to Iowa, partially because I have this preconceived notion that Iowans are perhaps the nicest people in the country (even nicer than you Texans!) Of course, the political junkie that I am, engaged in and listened in to several conversations regarding the presidential race. Initially, I let nobody know that I am a proud Obama supporter so I can gain an unbiased sense of conversation. Honestly, based on my early conversations, I don't think Iowans are happy and truly pleased to have so much political campaigning in their backyards. OK, now it's getting a little old. Another viral YouTube video hit the internet recently, pitting the Obama Girl vs. a Giuliani girl. Sure enough, you can count on the fact that scantily clad women boosting their breasts could be seen, while shaking their booties around super-imposed photos of the "candidate of choice." Frankly, is this what America really digs? Younger women dressing like their out a club, singing of their crushes and approval of our presidential candidates? Can a woman not look any more presentable or convey a more professional image than young girls with crushes acting like young girls? Maybe I'm looking at this all wrong? Maybe I'm not? Either way, it's all grown a tad old and I hope that these themes can move to something else. Start some viral videos using animals, cartoons...anything but stereotypical images of women engaging in pillow fights.

The University of New Hampshire Survey Center released their latest poll results, which shows a positive gain for Sen. Barack Obama, but voters still do not have confidence that Obama can defeat a Republican candidate.From the Los Angeles Times: Hillary Clinton, who's led her party's field for more than two years, slipped but still leads with 33% while Barack Obama has improved to 25% to close the gap from 14 points to 8. Bill Richardson remains in third with a steady 10% while John Edwards has plummeted from 21% in April to 12% in June and 8% now, the same as still-undeclared Al Gore. Questions Surround Obama's Campaign Contribution Reports

Here we go again, the media and Republicans, just can't figure out how/why Sen. Barack Obama has been able to claim such high numbers of campaign contribution dollars and contributors.  Questions have begun to surface regarding the true amount collected and have just about stated their distrust of the reported figures.Sen. Obama has indicated the campaign team does also include merchandise sold as a form of campaign contribution dollars, but it should be noted this amounts to less than 1% of the actual amount reported the Obama campaign to have collected from contributors.  It should also be noted three other presidential candidates also include merchandise in their reports: Sen. Are You Burnt Out on Campaign '08 Yet?

Fatigue.  Burn out.  This is exactly what many will fear most voters will face weeks/months before ever stepping into the voting booth.The New York Times ran an interesting piece about how the average American voter is actually growing increasingly burnt-out on the excessive "in-your-face" political coverage of the 2008 presidential election.  A barrage of cameras and media events seem to be scheduled across the country in every nook-and-cranny.  And those poor folks in Iowa.  Man, can you imagine a city like Des Moines that boasts having the lowest commute time in America, innundated with traffic now because of all the campaign workers and related officials strolling around their streets?Truthfully, I just have a feeling that most Americans are so interested in a change from the Bush administration, that they have helped fuel this early optimism by showing major support for a new candidate, ANY new candidate.  But as the weeks do draw nearer to the prim...

Sen. Barack Obama's Campaign Office Burglarized

Sen. Barack Obama's campaign office in Davenport, Iowa was the site of a burglary over the weekend.  On Saturday morning, campaign officials returned to find two laptops and campaign literature stolen.  A report was filed with local authorities, but no arrests have been made at this time.Obama officials have stated no sensitive information was stolen.  We can hope that our little thief will take some time to read over the literature and make sure to vote for Obama now, right?!!?
