Mitt Romney to Donate Presidential Salary to Charity
2007-05-30 17:25:00
Oh please, spare me.Not sure why this hit a nerve this morning, perhaps because I am not worth $250 million as Mitt Romney is.  Or perhaps I find his "gesture" patronizing and insulting to most Americans that are fortunate enough to donate $50 to a charity. The fact is, the presidential salary would make up a mere fraction of his overall net worth and he would most likely end up donating the equivalent amount (or more) for tax purposes.  But I have a major problem coming forth to the American people and saying, "if I'm elected your president, I'll donate my salary to charity."  I fight for every penny I can make and I'm considered middle-class.  I know many working-class citizens that will not hear Romney's "kind words" as being a philanthropist, instead as a pompous jerk.Again, this is merely my opinion.  I commend Mitt Romney for even contributing to a charity, but you don't have to tell people months in advance that your potential future White House s...

Which Candidate Would You Rather Talk With at a Memorial Day Picnic?
2007-05-29 16:55:00
You can thank a graduate student at Quinnipiac University for spending precious academic time to poll respondents on which presidential candidate frontrunner would they rather talk with at a barbecue.I suppose on one hand the results would say something about who the average American voter finds appealing to talk with, which can be used to help campaign strategists make needed changes to their candidate's overall appearance and/or personality.  But overall, this poll is kind of useless to me.  Either way, enjoy! Sen. Obama's "Universal Health Care for All" Plan
2007-05-29 16:39:00
Perhaps it's me just getting older, but I have finally realized the importance of having great health care.  There was a time when I first graduated from college with my second degree, but did not have a career yet, that I went uninsured for roughly 6 months.  Woo doggie!  To this day, I still couldn't imagine if something would have happened to me.  Most likely, I'd still be paying my student loans and a health bill off to date.So what does the rest of the uninsured country do?  One hospital visit can do a person with no insurance right under the table.  Particularly with the seemingly higher health care costs of late.Today's Chicago Tribune featured a headliner story promoting Sen. Barack Obama's universal health care for all plan.  According to the article, every American citizen would have the means to access health care and the government, businesses and owners would do their part to foot the bill. "The time has come for univ...

Summer Break Means Later Posts

For those who may know about my life away from the blogosphere, I'm actually a special education teacher in the Kansas City metropolitan area.  One of those perks of being a teacher is enjoying an approximate 2 1/2 month long summer vacation. No, I'm not saying that to brag...not by any means at all.  But this will result in more consistent days sleeping in past 7 or 8am.  Again, I'm not bragging.  I say all this because my blog posts will obviously be researched and published a tad later than they would during the school year.I'm personally amazed at how many readers and subscribers I have generated over the past two months.  It is for the readers that I give this advance notice that some posts may be published in mid-morning, as opposed to before any early morning commutes to work.I am also looking for others than wish to contribute to this blog site.  You are more than welcome to create posts and submit them to KCforObama@hotmail.com so I can crea...

Sen. Barack Obama Votes Against War Spending Bill
2007-05-25 17:19:00
Sen. Barack Obama has officially voted against the proposed $120 billion war spending bill.  While the Republican presidential candidates are using this opportunity as a slug-fest against his ability to lead as Commander in Chief, Sen. Obama released several statements addressing his vote. "This vote is a choice between validating the same failed policy in Iraq that has cost us so many lives and demanding a new one. And I am demanding a new one. "We must fund our troops. But we owe them something more. We owe them a clear, prudent plan to relieve them of the burden of policing someone else's civil war. We need a plan to compel the Iraqi people to reach a political accommodation and to take responsibility for their own future. It's time to change course."I opposed this war in 2002 precisely because I feared it would lead us to the open-ended occupation in which we find ourselves today."This President has led us down a disastrous path and has arrogantly refused to acknowledg...

Wanna get Sen. Hillary Clinton and her campaign team ticked off, ask her why she is pulling out of the Iowa primary election race!According to her quotes to the media, it was a notion that circulated through her campaign team as a suggestion, but was boldly rejected.  Sen. Clinton insists she is in the race to compete and will not stop short of winning the state of Iowa. A Clinton spokesman says the campaign is unequivocally committed to competing in Iowa. She plans to be in the state over the next three weekends and the campaign says it has doubled the size of the Iowa field staff over the past month. Message from Governor Howard Dean
2007-05-23 02:57:00
It reads like a Bush Administration Hall of Shame: Paul Wolfowitz, Michael Brown, Donald Rumsfeld, Scooter Libby. Now Attorney General Alberto Gonzales may become the latest Administration official to leave office in disgrace. America deserves better than what George Bush has given us. Democrats in the House and Senate are busy holding Alberto Gonzales and the rest of his cronies accountable for seven years of failed leadership. They're ready to cast a vote of no-confidence after years of the Bush Administration abusing its power. Mitt Romney: Republican Party Wonder-Boy
2007-05-22 16:46:00
Honestly, did you think that one year ago the front-runner and candidate to beat in the Republican Party would be Mitt Romney ?!?!The one-time, one-term Massachusetts governor is making quite a name for himself early in the presidential race, positioning himself as an all-around and comprehensive candidate.  He has the education, he has the wealth and he has the campaign contribution warchest growing every day.  He has already raised $21+ million and in June alone, has 65 fundraisers scheduled.  Over the weekend, he attended a game and fundraiser at Fenway Park to catch a Boston Red Sox game.  Just to eat a hot dog with the works alongside Romney, over 200 contributors forked over $2,300.  And get this...the most recent Des Moines Register straw poll has Romney with a 30% lead, well-ahead of Sen. John McCain at 18% and Rudoloph Guiliani at 17%.So is he the real deal for the Republican Party ?  Will the GOP backers pass over Giuliani and McCain?  And ...

Media Focus on Michelle Obama
2007-05-22 12:43:00
Perhaps it is just me, but I have noticed a recent surge in media and campaign coverage of Sen. Barack Obama 's wife, Mich elle.At last look, Michelle Obama was the subject of several newspaper stories (including the New York Times) and has hit the campaign trail to speak directly with voters, particularly women.  One article from KCCI.com reported that Michelle Obama is scheduled to appear and speak in Iowa each month leading to the January primary election. Now she is traveling as much as three days a week, headlining events and becoming an attraction in her own right. Aides say that she will not make policy speeches or attack other candidates, and Mrs. Obama says that she makes a sharp distinction between her role and that of the campaign staff. For instance, after the first Democratic presidential debate in South Carolina in April, she walked on stage and gave her husband a big hug. But she did not offer a critique of his performance because, she said, she want...

Sen. Barack Obama Editorial: "I Will Not Accept 'Bundled" Campaign Contribu
2007-05-21 15:30:00
Today's Chicago Tribune published an editorial written by Sen. Barack Obama regarding the current state of campaign contributions in the form of "bundled contributions."According to the present campaign-finance laws, an individual can only contribute a maximum of $2,300 per quarter.  This obviously poses a significant problem for lobbyists and political-action committee groups.  But this wouldn't outsmart them one bit.A technique called "bundling" was created, which allows a lobbyist or PAC to bundle an unlimited amount of individual contributions to contribute to a campaign.  It is feasible that a lobbying group can submit a campaign contribution upward of $500,000 comprised of 217 contributions in the full $2,300 amount.  The Senate has already approved a bill that would require lobbyists to disclose exactly to whom their "bundled" contributions are coming and going.  The House will soon be voting on a similar measure. ...

Immigration Bill Occupies U.S. Senate

Even if you're not the most politically-savvy person around or are bored beyond belief, get ready for the entertainment and drama that is about to unfold in the United States Senate in the coming days/weeks.The Senate is about to begin debate and discussion regarding an immigration bill that would lead to legal status for the projected 12 million illegal immigrants currently residing in the United States. "It's not amnesty. They're going to have to pay a penalty. They're going to have to wait in line. They're going to have to undergo a criminal background check," Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said. Illegal immigrants could seek a "Z visa" and get on track toward permanent residency after paying fees and fines. Heads of households would have to return to their home countries first. Guest workers would have to return to their home country after periods of two years. They could renew their visas twice, but would be required to leave for a year in between each time. These ...

Des Moines Register Poll: Sen. Barack Obama in 2nd
2007-05-21 12:33:00
This just goes to show how polls are irrelevant and annoying, particularly this early in the presidential election race.Just one week after a separate poll showed Sen. Barack Obama trailing in third place, the most recent Des Moines Register poll now has Sen. Obama trailing to John Edwards. The Iowa Poll shows Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina, is the first choice of 29 percent of those who say they definitely or probably will attend the January caucuses, which kick off the nominating process for the nation. Obama, a U.S. senator from Illinois, edges out Clinton for second place in the poll ? 23 percent to 21 percent.Give it another week and I'm confident the poll standings will shift yet again.

8-Year Old Olivia's Message to Sen. Barack Obama

I just finished writing a post about Sen. Barack Obama 's charge for America's younger generation to participate in the political process and make a differerence. Not even a full minute after publishing, I came across this letter written by 8-year old Olivia who spoke at the Kansas City fundraiser rally.  Olivia's letter is brief, yet concise.  She obviously attends school in a diverse setting, comprised of students of many different backgrounds.  This is her world.  This is what she knows as "American."And yet, the majority of our political leaders and elected officials are white.  What message does this send to a child?  Does it instill hope and optimism to a child that may not be white?  Does it make a child believe elected officials do not look after his/her own interests, solely because they have a different color of skin than their own?  These questions may sound foolish, but this is how a child thinks.  Sen. Sen. Barack Obama Challenges America's Younger Voters
2007-05-20 16:38:00
While I have no statistics to back my assertion, it is most likely quite true that America's younger voters just don't participate in the political process or vote in local and national elections.  I look at my own friends--they vote in national elections (which is certainly worth applauding alone), but have little interest in local politics and tend to be dead-set on political party allegiance.I also look at my own students--they have ZERO interest in politics and though some are of age to vote, choose not to do so.  And if you ask them, why don't you care, they just respond by saying they don't know what's going on or just flat-out don't care.  Because others are "voting for them," their vote just isn't that important. It's these younger voters--high school through college aged--that Sen. Barack Obama is targeting throughout this election.  He recognizes the American citizenry does require everybody's involvement and that the stability and well-being of...

Poll: Iowa Neck-and-Neck for Democratic Candidates
2007-05-20 16:31:00
I'm actually quite surprised the recent polls out of Iowa have Sen. Barack Obama in third place, trailing Sen. Hillary Clinton and John Edwards. A new poll by Research 2000 finds a three-way battle among the Democratic frontrunners. Of the Democratic caucus voters polled, 28 percent said they would vote for Senator Hillary Clinton. Former Senator John Edwards's support was at 26 percent, with Senator Barack Obama at 22 percent. All the other Democratic candidates were in single digits. On the Republican side, the new poll also shows an even closer contest. Eighteen percent of Republican caucus voters polled said they'd vote for Senator John McCain. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was just one point behind at 17 percent, and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was at 16 percent. The remaining Republican 2008 hopefuls were all in single digits.Obviously such polls still have a margin-of-error factor and the primaries are still months away, but after Sen. Obama open...

"He's an attractive, compelling, charismatic guy who has not been in politics very long, therefore has not had the time to pick up enemies you pick up, or at least opposition, if you stay around and are in the fray and fighting to do things," the former president said.
