2007-02-25 10:08:00 What a stupid way to analyse such a complex subject? Is it another propaganda work of those who are trying to mislead our public into thinking that only a parliamentary system can dispose the regime of Gayoom?Even parliamentary systems have been criticized for allowing the Head of Government to become too powerful. In fact recent events in the UK has led to many political scientists to claim that the UK Prime Minister has become more powerful than an executive president.Of course there is the criticism that a gridlock occurs when the legislature and executive is seperate. However, when the legislature and executive is same as in a parliamentary system it creates worse problems. Aren't we complaining about the undesirable influence of the executive on our parliament? Aren't we saying that ministers should not be in the parliament? Aren't we saying Gayoom's appointed members in parliament should be removed. Separation of powers is needed to ensure checks and balances between the l... More About: Readers , Men , Reader , Read , Comment
Why NOT a presidential system
2007-02-24 07:32:00 Critics generally claim three basic disadvantages for presidential systems:Tendency towards authoritarianism — some political scientists say that presidentialism is not constitutionally stable. According to some political scientists, such as Fred Riggs, presidentialism has fallen into authoritarianism in every country it has been attempted.Separation of powers — a presidential system establishes the presidency and the legislature as two parallel structures. Critics argue that this creates undesirable gridlock, and that it reduces accountability by allowing the president and the legislature to shift blame to each other.Impediments to leadership change — it is claimed that the difficulty in removing an unsuitable president from office before his or her term has expired represents a significant problem. Support the police: beat yourself up
2007-02-23 11:07:00 Yesterdays protest was the most peaceful protest ever made in the history of the Gayoom regime. No golhaa force. Yeah. Can’t believe right? Why a sudden change. C’mon don’t get caught again it’s another publicity stunt by the ruling DRP to clear votes for the upcoming election. And they are playing it quite well if not to mention some of the few people who are trying to make some problems like Yaameen. If you happen to read the papers you would know Yaameeen has told the journalist that there are many problems within DRP which is very destructive for DRP. So MDP did enjoy this and it is believed that this will earn them more credit. More About: The Police , Police , Yourself , Port , Self
Loosing again and again
2007-02-23 05:52:00 Guess what... We are loosing millions again. To be exact its 2.5 million rufiyaa, just because some guy couldn’t bother to look at the document before signing the agreement. Not surprised huh. Who’s responsible for this, your right nobody in the seat heating positions. The government wouldn’t even bother to do an investigation in this matter. Let them first question Ali Niyaz, Ismail Firaq and former minister of tourism Dr Mustafa Luthufee... Still don’t know what’s going on.They signed an agreement for 10 year taking money for 5 years, and there is no way they can take the rest rental charge for the other 5 years which is equal to 2.5 million rufiyaa. How can a blunder such as this are made. This is our money man. More About: Again , Sing
WHAT IS THE REFORM WE WANT?
2007-02-22 06:19:00 Isn’t it obvious we have all the freedom we need? We can say what we want, we can go where we want, and in a nutshell we are FREE. Then why are people trying so hard to get a freedom they already have. What I see is the way they have defined freedom. In their cause they might mean freedom as being able to do anything they want even if it goes beyond boundaries of Islamic civilization or it could be fighting for their rights which they really don’t have.So what are we fighting for? I say, we are fighting for a life. A life where a typical Maldivian family can spend their weekend enjoying an ice-cream. In a broader perspective, we are fighting for equality. If the high commissioner in UK earns a pocket money of $3000 a month why can’t a government staff earn at least $300 a month?Isn't it evident that 40%-30% of the Maldivian earn less than a $1 while 70% of the same population earn less than $4. Which means only 30% of the Maldivian is able to bring their hands and mouth toget... More About: Reform , Hat , Want , Form
MDP DRP PEACE DEAL
2007-02-21 12:32:00 Is the new proposed talks between the ruling party DRP and the main opposition MDP going to be another “piece” deal Where DRP and MDP get together in bringing more autocratic dictatorship to the country. Gayoom could still survive few more years but when the main two parties talk in a concealed agenda, people tend to think things. Why didn’t they invite other parties for the talks; if they want democracy to prevail they should let the minority parties also be involved in the reform. Why are their talks so enigmatic? Why does MDP want a mediator so much while DRP doesn’t? Does DRP really care about this talk or is Gayoom buying time. Politicians, when the biggest problem came to them they directed it to the people. The people can’t decide they are too busy to earn a living they can’t live. Who know what might happen next. VISION 2020
2007-02-20 09:06:00 Some environmental stuff. Back in the 90’s the global warming models kept suggesting that sea levels could rise by about 3 feet by 2100. That was based on the minimal set of data available. Now with new data (and with the discovery of the exponential rise in temparatures), it is time you change that 3 feet to 18 feet. Yes 18 feet! That is way up over our heads. Big cities like London and New York are going to be underwater too.So what are these new results about? The latest data suggests that at the present rate, Earth’s temparature would rise to the level as it was 130,000 years ago. In that time, the sea levels were about 20 feet highier - and that was because of the heat melting Arctic ice. Back then, the Earth was slightly tilted on the axis than it is today and it caused the polar regions to experience much warmer summers. So, by the time we get done with the 2020 stuff, we should be making evacuation plans. Make sure you are not moving to a coastal city. Pick a place with ... More About: Sion , Visi , Vision , Visio
Maldives "Constitutional rectangle"
2007-02-20 08:36:00 There are a number of fundamental elements in the Maldives maritime claims that warrant clarification. If the coordinates established in the Cons t itution as defining the "Territory of Republic of Maldives" are interpreted as the territorial sea limits, then it appears that the Maldives has improperly used these limits as baselines from which to develop its resource zones. If, however, the Maldives intended this "Constitutional rectangle" as the Maldives' national baseline, then its validity, from both a legal and historical basis, must be questioned. check this out. click www.law.fsu.edu/library/collection/Limits inSeas/ls078.pdf More About: Rectangle

CAUGHT: RED HANDED
2007-02-18 12:23:00 You have published DO Sappe's version of the origin of the nickname Golhabo without investigating it. I don't blame you as repetition of lies makes it seen as truth. Sappe has published his version in DO and in addition has given a video speech which was shown to unsuspecting masses during an MDP meeting. But people from the southern island you refer (Gdh. Thinadhoo) have a different story. In fact the original Golhabo went there from Male' and not vice versa. Of course he returned to Male' later with his new nickname. Golhabo was a term he made himself and started calling to others who called another nickname to him. In fact I can remember the original Golhabo getting mad at people in Male' who shouted at him anything, including the term Golhabo, and he shouted back Golhabo. A man from Thinadhoo who was a kid at the time the original Golhabo was in Thinadhoo, told me the story. And the circumstances under which this nickname came got nothing to do with toddy for your informati... More About: Caught , Hand , Handed
THE FINE ART OF COVERING UP
2007-02-18 12:00:00 The central key policy in the gayoom administration is solely made on the belief that they can NOT make any mistakes. And even if they did, it had to be brushed off like it never happened. And certainly the incident should not be mentioned in any form.Frankly speaking, Abdel Gayoom is one of the few leaders who are known to rule with a magic wand in their hands. If he isn’t making any mistakes then he’s perfect. There’s no room for any improvement. This includes any one blessed under his spectra including Ministers all up to relatives and key government officials. Obviously the low ranking officials aren’t included. These low level employees are thus very mishap prone and they don’t shy from the law either. For instance we often hear this and that employee been busted for foul play.- Trade Ministry staff taking a few thousand rufiyaa’s from the office- Bank officer riddling someone else cash card- STO clerk suspend for the bounce check fiasco- STO cashier at gas fill all... STOLEN WITH RESPECT
2007-02-17 17:14:00 Basically the title 'Golhaabo' means toddy thief, one who steal the toddy of poor men, and is given to someone who mercilessly steals the hard earned living of innocent and poor people, the way Gayyoom is stealing the hard earned 'life' of thousands and thousands of Maldivians .Toddy 'is the sweet sap of a variety of Asian palm tree used as a beverage, either fresh or fermented'. Toddy collecting is a long standing traditional occupation in the Maldives, but despite being hard and risky, it does not provide a substantial income. In fact, they are classed amongst the lowest income earners. To collect the toddy, the flower casing (bud) is cut at the top end before it blossoms and an empty coconut shell is hung to collect the drip (sap). It can take several hours to fill a shell, which usually has a capacity of about 500 ml. This coconut shell collector is locally called 'Golhaa', a word that originated from snail shell because it looks like a coconut shell according to linguis... More About: With , Stolen , Respect
OPINIONISM
More articles from this author:2007-02-17 16:56:00 At present it just draws a very frightful picture in my imagination about what Maumoon Gayyoom may do next. It seems it has come to his mind (or someone's) to press his little tail and do the worst. I wouldn't be surprised if the white sand is to be coloured with our blood in the next outbreak. Here is a little query that rings a bell in my head after reading the Dhivehi version of the strange and confusing "Riyaasee Report":The report did not match the president's first interview after the riots. That day he said the government tried its best to avoid shooting the inmates, by firing first into the "havaa", which means to the air I suppose. According to the reports he gave to the Majlis this week, it now looks as if the so called officers acted on their own without the knowledge of the top authorities!Even after all the excuses, I still think anyone with a sense of decency would at least resign from his post when something like this happens. We see that happening elsewhere around ... More About: Opinion 1, 2, 3 |
