Well, that?s a shock!
2007-08-30 01:53:00
What, Castro’s afraid more athletes might defect? Cuba won’t send a boxing team to the world championships in Chicago, heeding Fidel Castro’s fears about future defections after two fighters abandoned their teammates during the Pan American Games. The competition is one of three qualifying tournaments for the 2008 Olympics. LOL! Be afraid, Fidel, be VERY ...

Posthumous predictions from Castro today in Granma: Today, talk is about the seemingly invincible ticket that might be created with Hillary for President and Obama for Vice President. Something very telling in Castro’s posthumous musings: he likes Carter and Clinton: OF all the presidents of the United States, and those who aspire to that office, I ...

What are they gonna do, upgrade their MiG jet fighters?
2007-08-28 03:08:00
…so they can shoot down unarmed Cessna turboprops, not just twin-engine models? Cuba has been upgrading its military arsenal since President Fidel Castro fell ill 13 months ago, to defend itself against a possible US invasion, senior officers told Trabajadores weekly on Monday. Har, har, har! That’s a good one!

Cuba behind dead Castro rumors?
2007-08-28 02:51:00
A U.S. State Department spokesman hinted as much, according to an AFP story published on the La Nueva Cuba website: “I would say that the Cuban government has always been very good at stirring the nest whenever they felt the need to,” said Gonzo Gallegos, a State Department spokesman. “I can’t say whether or not this ...

‘Fidel doesn’t matter’
2007-08-27 12:40:00
That’s the headline of a brief item by Brazil correspondent Jonathan Wheatley of the Financial Times. Here’s the money quote: It has been clear since last summer when the president’s younger brother, Raúl, smoothly took over the reins of power on a temporary basis that the institutions of Cuban communism were strong enough to survive Mr Castro’s departure from office. Gawd, I hope he’s wrong. But in any event, Raul is old himself. Except that maybe when his turn comes up, he’ll say yes to the colostomy bag.

Tomorrow (Monday ) a big court date is set for the custody battle between the foster, and would be adoptive parents of a young Cuban girl in Miami, and her father from Cuba: Nearly eight years after the battle over young Elian Gonzalez divided this city, another Cuban child has become the center of a bitter ...

Posthumous writing?
2007-08-26 20:21:00
Amid all the rumors of Castro’s death, a ghostwritten essay has appeared in the Juventud Rebelde (Rebellious Youth) newspaper in Cuba, supposedly just hot off the moribund caudillo’s typewriter: Castro’s essay, the latest in dozens of ”Reflections of the Commander in Chief” columns he has published several times a week since late March, was ...

Another day, another denial
2007-08-26 20:12:00
You have to wonder. All these Castroites coming out of the woodwork, denying Fidel’s death. The latest: Castro’s Mini-Me, Hugo Chavez: “Fidel Castro will never die!” Castro?s friend and ally Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez sent greetings to Cuba?s ailing leader during an address Saturday to thousands of supporters. “For those who want Fidel to die, they ...

The rumor mill is spinning?

…like a windvane during a hurricane, with news that Fidel Castro is really, finally dead. Spanish- (and English-) language radio and TV, newspaper websites, blogs, even Drudge. Everyone’s talking about it–but acknowledging it as a rumor at this point. I myself saw little activity in Miami (related to celebrations, or anything similar), ...

Even in death he won?t shut up
2007-08-24 13:47:00
Yet he remains quiet about his health… possibly because his body temperature is now the same as room temperature? A new newspaper column signed by Fidel Castro and published Thursday again attacks U.S. policies toward the island but does not address his health. Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque told journalists in Brazil on Thursday that the 81-year-old ...

Anti-corruption laws toughened in Cuba Acting leader Raúl Castro has ordered harsher penalties for public officials who break labor rules. Ratcheting up his fight against corruption and mismanagement in Cuba, interim leader Raúl Castro has signed a decree requiring tough, swift and long-lasting punishment for public officials who violate labor rules. If slavery is illegal under this new ...

Castro is ?fine?
2007-08-24 04:42:00
So says his parrot, Felipe Perez Roque. The fact that Castro ’s lackeys have to deny his death tells me he’s probably already roasting at very high temperatures. In any event, Perez Rockhead’s “Castro ‘is fine’” comment has inspired me to write the following song parody, based on the Beatles’ “I Feel Fine .” ...
Art imitating the reality of Cuba
2007-08-23 14:07:00
Before today, I’d never heard of the artist Victor Huerta Batista, who is based in Cuba . But I like the theme of some of his work, as it reflects the reality of Castro’s Cuba: In Huerta’s “rampant imaginative world”–as (University of Arizona Museum of Art) curator Lisa Fischman calls it–the whole population of Cuba ...

2007-08-22 03:36:00
Venezuela’s rubber-stamp congress moved closer to allowing Fidel Castro’s parrot, Hugo Chavez, to become dictator for life (or for a very long time at least). They gave the initial thumbs up to a series of so-called “reforms” that would allow Mini-Me, er, Chavez, to stay in office for a seven-year term rather than the ...

Cuban journalist ?freed? from prison
2007-08-22 03:10:00
Of course, when you’re talking about Fidel Castro’s Cuba, being “freed” from prison is a relative term. After all, Cuba under the Castro brothers is nothing but a huge, open-air prison. But I digress. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), independent Cuban journalist Armando Betancourt Reina was released Monday. ...

Is Castro (finally) dead?
2007-08-20 15:25:00
Lots of rumors floating around that Fidel Castro is finally dead. Babalu Blog has a few posts dedicated to the topic, here’s the latest one. The Caudillo Maximo hasn’t posted any new blatherings on his propaganda website. Castro’s Mini-Me, Hugo Chavez, is denying Castro is dead (and we all know how good a commie’s word is). The five CONVICTED (that’s right, CONVICTED) spies Castro sent to the U.S. (disclaimer: link goes to a website I own) are appealing their prison sentences. Why? Because, {sniff, sniff} they say their sentences are {whine, whine} too long: Almost nine years after their arrest, five Cubans convicted of spying on the U.S. government and South Florida exile groups ...

2007-08-14 02:48:00
After last year’s song-and-dance over Fidel Castro’s 80th birthday, there isn’t much talk about his eighty-worst now. Granma’s English website just has a silly cartoon and some kiss-up letters from the five convicted spies serving their sentences in the U.S. Funny, I wonder if they’d publish letters from the political prisoners languishing in Cuba’s prisons. For that ...

Okay, last month’s poll question was quite lame (yes, I know, and it’s not the only lame post I’ve ever done here). In case you’re wondering, last month’s poll question was simply a list of suggestions for this month’s poll question. And we have a tie. Because one of the winners (When ...

He wouldn’t want to live in Cuba: “Their rights and protection from potential genocide and violence depended on them never trying to organize politically as blacks,” said Mark Sawyer, a UCLA professor who spent 11 months in Cuba researching his recently published book, Racial Politics in Post-Revolutionary Cuba. That kind of talk also likely scares ...
