The Iraq i government has placed a $1.5 billion order with the United States for additional military equipment. They are buying an additional 300 armored personnel carriers, 600 additional up-armored Humvees, several UH-2 advanced helicopters. They will also buy more armored wheeled vehicles for moving troops. The Iraqi air force has Russian-built 10 MI-17 helicopters, which can each carry up to 30 troops or 20 wounded, as well as outsized cargo. It can also be armed with missiles and bombs. It has three Lockheed Martin-built C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft, and 18 other fixed-wing aircraft. The Iraqi navy has five Predator-class patrol boats. The boats were ordered in 2002 by Saddam Hussein's regime under the United Nations oil-for-food program, but their delivery was blocked as the boats had a military application. UK Tornado force pushes NTISR
2007-01-23 16:20:02
UK Royal Air Force (RAF) Panavia Tornado GR.4 reconnaissance/attack aircraft are being used in Iraq to provide surveillance information on insurgent operations, a changed use of the targeting and bombing capabilities of the aircraft. The GR.4s are now in the forefront of developing non-traditional intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (NTISR) tactics during missions to support coalition troops.US and UK aircraft operating over Iraq are using their electro-optical targeting pods to improve situational awareness for ground troops and detect insurgent threats. The changing nature of the counter-insurgency campaign has forced coalition air forces in Iraq to evolve their operations and push non-kinetic effects to the fore, according to RAF officers.A direct datalink to allow the downloading of imagery from the pod to ground controllers is also included in this urgent operational requirement upgrade package. Support to ground troops with information from TIALD is currently provided...

US Army streamlines future UAV fleet
2007-01-23 16:20:02
The US Army announced on 9 January that it would indefinitely postpone development of two unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems as part of its Future Combat Systems (FCS) modernisation programme.Army officials said two of the four planned FCS UAV systems - the Class II and the Class III - would be deferred while development of Class I and Class IV continues. In addition, the service may consider accelerated fielding of the Class I and Class IV UAVs as FCS technology is developed.Colonel John Burke, director of unmanned systems integration in the army's aviation directorate, said the study included an analysis that examined the missions that an FCS-equipped brigade might have. "This determined that the Class I and the Class IV would give the best [capability] if you had to reduce the UAV types," he said. The original FCS plans envisioned four classes of UAV, with separate designs for the platoon, company, battalion and brigade level. The Class I - being developed by Honeywell - would...

Last year, navy officials reported the cost to build the USS Freedom had increased from USD212.5 million to USD274.5 million. The cost performance review on the USS Freedom is now about 70 per cent complete, said Etter, adding that both Secretary of th...
