Even God thinks or education planning sucks
2007-06-09 19:25:00
Wow! The Catholics are pissed off that politicians are blaming them for not providing enough school places. The Archbishop of Dublin tells it like it is. Although you wouldn’t have to be omnipotent to figure that one out. My desire is to limit the number of new Catholic schools in developing areas of Dublin to what ...

Message for Bertie
2007-06-09 19:19:00
Dear Bertie, I have a message for you and since this is a family orientated blog I will put it like this: Take your pencil and shove it where the sun don’t shine. And when you’re done stick the evoting machines up there too. Clear? Three weeks ago in the context of e-voting you said we were ...

Is East Meath Growth Sustainable?
2007-06-08 15:23:00
I was doing some more analysis on the population growth figures for our area. According to the Planning Strategy for the Greater Drogheda Area the population is expected to increase by approximately 55,000 in the next 18 years, split almost evenly between Drogheda and East Meath . In terms of sustainability the Regional Planning Guidelines for ...

Stamullen School
2007-06-08 10:42:00
Did I read in the Drogheda Indo last week (no link up yet) that even though the church has bought a site in Stam ullen for the new school the Department is now forcing the local community to raise ?63K to begin the process of building the school? Tell me I was dreaming. Why does the Government ...

Bad Planners
2007-06-08 10:14:00
The head of the Irish Planning Institute is saying that there aren’t enough planners and that the system is on the brink of collapse. In the first census of its kind for a decade, the Irish Planning Institute said it has uncovered a system that is on the brink of being unable to deal with the ...

The Mayfair Set
2007-06-07 13:56:00
Excellent Adam Curtis Documentary, “The Mayfair Set”. Tells about the relationship between power, money, politics and resources. Many lessons in it. Worth the three hour investment to watch. Episode 1 Episode 2 Episode 3 Episode 4 After watching this documentary I fail to see how any national government, Ireland included can claim to be in control ...

This is a great idea
2007-06-07 10:15:00
Via USA Today. Would it work here? Would it f**k. California is pioneering what could be the next battleground against global warming: filing suit to hold cities and counties accountable for greenhouse gas emissions caused by poorly planned suburban sprawl. The unprecedented action is being closely watched by states that have taken aggressive steps to combat ...

Awakening
2007-06-06 11:18:00
Ireland often reminds me of the 1990 film Awakenings, where, The victims of an encephalitis epidemic many years ago have been catatonic ever since, but now a new drug offers the prospect of reviving them. For so long we were a basket case country vainly living in a world of our own, overtly poor, suffering from crippling ...

Political Confidence
2007-06-04 14:46:00
Nice article commenting on the US election. Many of the points are applicable here too. [M]y guess is that the really important issues will never be articulated in the course of this campaign because they are too painful for the public to hear. And so all the premature debating and posturing will amount to a smokescreen ...

Why is the Irish State hostile to education?
2007-06-04 12:32:00
The more I learn about education in Ireland, the more I am convinced that the Irish state is in fact hostile to education. How else can you explain the complete lack of provision of an education system to match population growth. It seems to be happening all over the country. We already know about the ...

Value of Education
2007-06-03 12:21:00
Two contrasting stories from the week. Firstly there were celebrations surrounding the opening of a new school in Ratoath last week. They people are in fact celebrating that they no longer have to send their kids to school in a race course. Easter and Christmas were the hardest, we had to pack everything into a ...

Public and Private
2007-06-03 10:46:00
We already blogged about how the public realm is being handed over to private interests. We were struck by two contrasting schemes. The first envisages the building of private hospitals on public land, the so called co-location plan. The second was the idea to provide public housing on private lands, contained in the original Part ...

The power of denial
2007-06-02 00:47:00
This report says the gardai withdrew a speaker from a road safety conference after that speaker voiced an opinion that many of the fatalities on the roads are caused by poorly maintained roads. The Garda speaker was relying on hard data in his findings. Garda authorities have withdrawn a speaker from a road engineering conference after he said that the condition of the roads was a significant contributory factor to car crashes. In an advanced press release for the Engineering Safer Roads conference, organised by Engineers Ireland local government division, Sgt Colm Finn, head of the Garda Forensic Investigation Unit in Dublin Castle, said road conditions played a significant role in the cause of some crashes. Personally I agree 100% with the commendable Sgt Finn. I take the rally of Ireland route to work every morning and have come close to killing people on several occasions because the roads I use are narrow and windy and pedestrians are very vulnerable. It is only a matter of t...

12 Hour Wait in A&E
2007-06-01 22:15:00
I don’t know. Is this story really news? The Health Service Executive has said it will introduce a target waiting time of 12 hours for patients from October in Accident and Emergency departments. The announcement comes after a report out today said that at least seven hospital A&E departments are unfit for that purpose. A target 12 hour wait in A&E seems like some kind of a joke. That’s a target, not even a maximum wait. What kind of system is operating here? I can’t think of any other service where you have to wait 12 hours for it. What part of “emergency” do they not understand in the HSE? Imagine if the Fire Brigade committed to this kind of a deadline? Even worse, our local hospital in Drogheda is not even capable of committing to a target 12 hour maximum wait in A+E.

nice. More comments today from someone who should know better that ?we are talking ourselves into a recession?. F**ked Country
2007-05-31 12:18:00
What a bizarre country. Three stories from this week. Firstly they want to jail parents of kids not going to school. Maybe they should try to find out what the problem is rather than locking already disadvantaged people up. At the same time they still can’t figure out how to build another school in a rapidly ...

House Prices Falling
2007-05-31 11:39:00
From the Indo Fears of a slump in the property market grew yesterday after the permanent tsb/ESRI house price index showed prices nationally fell 1.3pc in the first four months. This was combined with a small increase in Dublin prices and a 1.5pc fall in the rest of the country - with the biggest drop in ...

Again from Harry McGee But Fianna Fail won the ground war, and won it hands-down. The party always seems to be ahead of the posse in terms of tactics and strategy. In the late 1990s it began maximising its chances of getting a seat bounce by ruthlessly minimising its number of candidates. This time round, it ...

Developers Dream in Bettystown
2007-05-26 11:29:00
We already blogged about Noel Dempsey opening the Bettystown “Town Centre” and his comments on the BBC. There was more coverage in the Drogheda Indo, Irish Indo and the Meath Chronicle this week. The coverage was fairly uniform and one sided in all papers where effectively the developer’s press release was reproduced without comment. It ...

How to vote in Meath East

So tomorrow is polling day and you are asked to vote for the TDs who will represent Meath East in the next Dail. So what do you do? Do you vote for the government that oversaw the rampant over development of our area over the last 10 years? Do you really believe there is an “alternative ...

Crisis in politics - Politicians find out what people really think
2007-05-18 18:05:00
Kildare North FF candidate Aine Brady is moaning that blogs .. …tend to generate hostile comment against politicians whereas what is required to address the largely ?quality of life? challenges faced by society today is a richer and more constructive engagement between the citizen and the politician. No shit. Maybe blogs are allowing politicians to engage with ...

We truly are doomed
2007-05-14 19:14:00
How times have changed. Ten years ago Ireland was the most popular country in Europe, three Eurovisions, the Celtic Tiger, all the europeans opening Irish pubs. Serbia was the most hated country, Slobodon Milosovic, Kosovo, etc. Now Serbia is top of Europe and our only friends are are the Albanians. Come to think of it they ...
