Friday Sermon From Iran
2007-07-27 14:52:00
Nothing but tough love from Tehran's substitute Frida y prayers leader Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati this morning. Speaking to the congregation of recent talks with the U.S. he said: “Iran is ready to do whatever the Iraqi people and government demand to provide Iraq with security. In the talks, we tried to make the Americans understand their mistakes in Iraq. The Americans were frankly reminded about their mistakes in Iraq and they were asked why they were still lingering in an Islamic country which has an elected government." “There is a collection of hooligans in Iraq now. If the Americans and the British were not in Iraq, the government in Baghdad could deal with these terrorists and mischief-makers." "The more the occupiers remain in Iraq, the more loss they would inflict on themselves. They are getting more and more hated by the world people and they would eventually have to withdraw from Iraq with shame.” The minister of love also made note of the anniversary...

Believing the Worst Requires Too Little Imagination
2007-07-27 04:35:00
If it bleeds it leads is one reason we are all too well aware of as to why the news has more good then bad; even when more good than bad may have happened. Watch any local newscast and the coverage is wall to wall crime, accidents and anything that might bring in the viewers hoping for some action and car chases. In Iraq, from Abu Ghraib, Fallujah to Haditha, the truth isn’t nearly as important as the story; much like the Duke Lacrosse players in their travails and tribulation facing prison time for a rape they did not commit nor even happened. All this is unfortunate for us in that it leads to an acceptance of what isn’t as those it is, which brings us to all the horror stories of our soldiers in Vietnam as baby killers and presently our heartless “killers” in Iraq. Perhaps if the media wasn’t so starved or easily self-mislead toward the worst in us in a war they disagree with we might have a true picture of what exactly is going on. Mackubin Thomas Owens, c...

Yet Another, If We Leave Now and Still Worth Reading
2007-07-26 19:20:00
I often get tired of the oft repeated stories, columns or opinion pieces regarding what Iraq would be were we to pack up and leave. This however, is not because I do not wholeheartedly agree with them, but because they are so absolutely realistic that it is rather annoying to have to continuously repeat the obvious to those that are still in the throes of “its Bush’s fault” fits. This is for those that will not read it and cannot contemplate that the United States, especially under the leadership of President Bush is not a Rightwing, war mongering entity. I pity the previously referred to as it must be an incredibly miserable existence to believe in nothing, but the doom and gloom of theories justifying their self-loathing tendencies; that pity however does not go very deep because like the drug addict, initially they brought it on themselves and just cannot break the habit. Of particular interest this morning is yet another entry from someone who has learned and a...

Like a Thoof in the Night
2007-07-26 17:59:00
Thoof is one of those sites where you submit posts of your own or just posts you find that you really enjoy. Referring to Thoof as “one of those sites” doesn’t seem appropriate though, as the process of registering, submitting and embedding the ThoofRank badge is straightforward and extremely easy. It is also more of a personalized news submittal community. Registration at Thoof consists of entering your email address; you then receive an email with a link back; click on that, enter a password of your choice and THAT IS IT!!! This to me is very good; none of this immediately upfront registration detail to bother with, you just get going. Want to submit one of your posts or a particular post or article that you like? Either use the Thoof bookmark/post tool or do it manually by using the submit story function at the Thoof site. Either way requires zero thought or intelligence as I was able to do it without the usual back and forth trying to figure out how this or th...

South Korean Hostages Held by Taliban Orts - "they do not pay attention!"
2007-07-26 16:06:00
Of the 22 remaining South Korean hostages taken by the Taliban in Afghanistan Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yousuf said: “They are safe and alive,” and that the Afghanistan government, “has given us hope for a peaceful settlement of the issue.” The “hope” he spoke of is a positive turn as 23 people had initially been taken hostage while on a 10 day relief mission and unfortunately one had to be shot dead yesterday because the Afghan government “had not responded positively to its demands,” which was to a demand of the release “of eight Taliban prisoners in exchange for eight Koreans.” Another Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, complained of the government in Kabul: “They do not pay attention and did not give a positive response, so that’s why we killed one Korean hostage.” Chief Presidential Secretary for Security Policy Baek Jong-chun of South Korea furthered what will likely be observed as “non positive response,” by the “s...

“The War Is for You or For Us to Win”
2007-07-26 04:04:00
"Here's the bottom line: Al Qaida in Iraq is run by foreign leaders loyal to Osama bin Laden. Like bin Laden, they are cold-blooded killers who murder the innocent to achieve al Qaida's political objectives. Yet despite all the evidence, some will tell you that al Qaida in Iraq is not really al Qaida — and not really a threat to America. Well, that's like watching a man walk into a bank with a mask and a gun, and saying he's probably just there to cash a check."Personally when it comes to Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere; I don't care whether the egg came before the chicken or vice versa. Intelligence can be so off, as it has been yet often that is all you have. Do you go for it or not? The NY Times and the rest have the benefit as do I, of not having to make any decision based on intelligence. As much as the intelligence community has failed in recent years past it is still all we have. The Times and others will tout it when it suits them and damn it when it does...
Recent Deaths PROVE Iraq is a Distraction from Real War on Terror
2007-07-25 19:56:00
Just trying to get a jump on the Editorial CurveAccording to CNN:"Car bombers targeted throngs of Iraq is Wednesday as they spilled into Baghdad streets to cheer a national soccer victory, killing at least 17 people and leaving scores more wounded.Attacking revelers in the Mansour district of western Baghdad, a suicide car bomber killed at least 10 people and wounded 62, said an Interior Ministry official. Later, in the southeastern neighborhood of Ghadir, a second car bomb killed at least seven and wounded at least 27, the official said. The attack is near an Iraqi army checkpoint.Thousands of fans had filled the streets of the capital after Iraqi athletes competing in Malaysia defeated South Korea, catapulting the nation to the Asian Cup finals for the first time."Having foolishly believed in the past that Iraq is a central or the central front in the war on terror I have now come to my senses having read the above. Our military should not be in Iraq to either referee soccer match...

Cross posted from Wake Up America:Thanks to CArthur for the email.Posted in Guest Authors by Longhunter on July 23, 2007Throughout this Haditha investigation our family has believed in the innocence of our son L/Cpl Justin Sharratt- we knew he was innocent. There are things I do not understand and I would like to find the answers. We do not seek revenge, but we would like to see justice. In a conversation with Congressman John Murtha , my questions still remain unanswered. With the help of the American people, I hope to find justice. On Wednesday morning, July 17th I spoke with Congressman John Murtha via telephone from his Washington, DC office. We had a courteous conversation. I knew what to expect from a career politician and Congressman Murtha did not disappoint. Mr. Murtha avoided answering the hard questions and I was unable to press him for the answers. I wanted the conversation to remain amicable and decided to let him speak and avoid a heated confrontation. At no time during t...

Now Hear This: The Editors Have Spoken Again
2007-07-25 15:25:00
Will someone please, please, please flush the toilet Paper???According to the emotion and angst filled, non logic using editorial board members at The NY Times:"Prolonging the war for another two years will not bring victory. It will mean more lives lost, more damage to America’s international standing and fewer resources to fight the real fight against terrorists."This group whines like Mike Gravel at a Democrat Debate, why are they so invested in the never changing need to get out? Who are these people? Who are the members?Because we are still in Iraq (big surprise!) it is nothing but an utter failure. Because we are in Iraq, "Al Qaeda’s top leadership (has) regrouped and (is) resurgent in its old strongholds along the Pakistani-Afghan frontier." Is the logic(?) that we could then invade Pakistan or send more military to Afghanistan? What kind of a "quagmire" would be created by sending more soldiers to Afghanistan; do we really want to get involved in something like that...

CNN/YouTube Democrat Debate Follow-up
2007-07-24 20:59:00
Was it a success? Or was it just another debate but with a face on the question? Was it just wishful thinking on my part or was there a brief nano-second(?) of a bust to the right of the person with the first question (his left)? Yesterday I had concerns about the YouTube angle of the debate making it more of an entertainment extravaganza and said, “I cringe to contemplate faux sincerity from the candidates in response to a question asked by a “real live” previously recorded video of an American citizen.” Having actually viewed the debate, I didn’t actually cringe at these home made video questions, but just the same the whole addition was kind of useless. Overall I thought the setting and tone of the “show” was good; it was actually better than I had expected. However (seven letter word for “but”), the content was “as expected,” which is unless you’re an easily convinced monkey there was nothing of any use. Last night a couple hours after th...

Iraq is a “quagmire;” Alright, I said It
2007-07-24 17:46:00
The term “quagmire” and the beginnings of its overuse hark back to the Vietnam War; becoming part of the popular lexicon following the publication of David Halberstam’s Pulitzer Prize winning account of the Diem/Kennedy years of the Vietnam War, "The Making of a Quagmire." Just about every military intervention of the U.S. since Vietnam has been referred to as a “quagmire,” in one form or another. It has become a catchphrase that speaks volumes, however elicits no details other than the minds eye portrays. Once labeled a “quagmire” a war or battle has likely heard its last level headed remark made about it; that goes for those in support of or against the conflagration in question. There has to be a time that we will remove the majority of our forces from Iraq , however, a specific date cannot be selected and certainly not when things might be taking the kind of turn that may give us the first glimmer of a paced exodus that is actually based on a workab...

Chicago Tribune and BP Whiting Refinery Heavy Petroleum Increase
2007-07-23 23:04:00
In these days of global warming theatrics and perhaps downplaying of environment issues from the other side it becomes more and more apparent each day that someone needs to stand up and speak honestly about these issues. On the other hand what we do on this planet has to have some kind of impact one would think, but to what degree is the question. It is for this reason that environmental standards are set and those that do not heed those standards and laws are rightfully punished; when caught anyway. The main stream media says that it reports in an unbiased and even handed way, yet day in and day out one sees via the voice of the author and the words used often connote a very different impression. We’ve grown so used to it that we barely notice anymore unless we happen to know much of the detail already, which of course is possible with all the sources of information available at our fingertips with the help of the internet. I often find myself thinking the OpEd p...

CNN/YouTube Debate and Political Vindication Roundtable
2007-07-23 21:33:00
A Democrat Presidential Debate is scheduled for tonight on CNN. What makes this debate interesting, excluding the fact that the campaigning in the media began moments after we went to the polls last November, is something that many are aware of; that being the sponsorship of the debate by CNN and Youtube . I cringe to contemplate faux sincerity from the candidates in response to a question asked by a “real live” previously recorded video of an American citizen. How this will improve upon the debates is anyone’s question, but one thing is for sure (maybe) that viewer ship should be up. In this day and age of internet and “reality show” fame many, like the Obama girl will jump at the opportunity to be seen and heard; although as with everything those selected will still be a small minority of those that submitted. Poli tics these days has become more and more about image over substance. Mind you this is nothing new, but technology, savvy production, techo looking s...

Where Less Is More? Iraq is not Vietnam is not Afghanistan
2007-07-23 19:45:00
Previously posted regarding lessons of history: "Shades of Vietnam ...Which Lessons?"According to Rory Stewart at The NY Times: “AMERICA and its allies are in danger of repeating the mistakes of Iraq in Afghanistan . Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and even some Republicans are insisting on withdrawing from Iraq and sending more troops and resources to southern Afghanistan. The Bush administration’s gloomy National Intelligence Estimate last week on the fight against Al Qaeda will only lead others to make such calls. But they should think again. The intervention in Afghanistan has gone far better than that in Iraq largely because the American-led coalition has limited its ambitions and kept a light footprint, leaving the Afghans to run their own affairs.” This speaks to those that are calling for an increase in troops in Afghanistan or as some would have it “the real war on terror.” The Democrat candidates that Stewart lists are making their stances for largely political ...

Iraq and Afghanistan from the Air - Interview with Lt. Gen Gary L. North
2007-07-23 16:31:00
W. Thomas Smith Jr., (former U.S. Marine infantry leader, W. Thomas Smith Jr. writes about military issues and has covered war in the Balkans, on the West Bank, and in Iraq . Smith is the author of six books, and his articles appear in a variety of publications. He blogs at “The Tank.”), has an interview up at NRO with Lt. General Gary L. North , commanding general of CENTCOM’s CENTAF and Combined Force Air Component Commander (CFACC). The interview, along with the recent Hugh Hewitt interview with General David Petraeus is a must read. If there were no other reason to read it, it would be that it reveals the level of planning and reality of the logistics of our fight in Iraq and elsewhere in the global war on terror. Oddly, it’s not a fight that is of the brain-dead simplicity the media reports upon. As with anything, it is never that simple. We should all appreciate how huge an undertaking this war is and give it more credit than our politicians and detractors imply....

Friday Sermon from Iran
2007-07-20 21:17:00
Provisional Frida y Prayer Leader of Tehran Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami led the congregation with his usual flair and aplomb; speaking of the recent televised confessions of American-Iran ian “spies”: ‘"This policy has worked in some countries, but in Iran, it has faced defeat, just like the other failed US policies on Iran."’ Khatami’s statement fits perfectly in line with the propaganda of the regime and mullahs, which is according to Amir Taheri in today’s NY Post, “The Conspiracy That Wasn’t.” The use of these hostages is for the fodder they can make of them and the United States and msm should be screaming up a storm about it. The use of the propaganda unfolds to include statements such as: ‘"During the past fifty years the United States has directly or indirectly interfered in the internal affairs of 25 countries of the world militarily, and the funny thing is that Washington also claims it is after the establishment of democracy through...

"We're Not Staying; You Don't Have Much Time!"
2007-07-20 17:45:00
One of the of-size issues of “discussion” these days is what a “redeploy” order would be like for the U.S. and Iraq. The two “schools” of thought are, in a nutshell; one would free us up to fight the real enemy, with a sprinkling of disdain for the plight of the Iraqis once we leave as it’s their country. The second sees Iraq as a new haven or sanctuary for al Qaeda and other nasties, as well as a rippling effect upon the region deleterious, although pretty obvious in many others to our efforts in the greater war on terror. Is it just a bunch of “fear mongering” to suggest mayhem and unimagined violent ramifications to a U.S. “redeployment?” If so, how would one describe the other side of the argument, “peace mongering?” Certainly not, as there would be no “peace” for miles and miles; just because the U.S. had left; just a certain “peace” of mind for some because it isn’t our problem. Yesterday, top military and Ambassador to Iraq, Rya...

THIS JUST IN: well yesterday:"Former Rep. He says it's now time to finish the job."This latest assessment is based upon the recently release National Intelligence Estimate (Democrats have failed this "intelligence" test). Why does the Co-Chair of the Democrat Majority revered Iraq Study Group believe the U.S. should strike?"If there's anything we should have learned, it's that we must not let al Qaeda have a sanctuary, which they certainly do in Pakistan today."If there's anything we should have learned, it's that we must not let al Qaeda have a sanctuary!!!!! "General" Andrew Sullivan Dishonors General Petraeus
2007-07-19 20:35:00
“Well, to be candid, that’s a hypothetical that I’m just not prepared to address. We are determined to do all that we can, while we’re given the opportunity to try to bring this to as successful as reasonable a conclusion as is possible, and that is really what is just what I’m devoting all my intellectual energy and physical energy to at this point in time, not thinking about what the implications of not getting it right are.” -- spin from one on the side of Cheney and “extremist, Republican partisans,” General Petraeus in response to Hugh Hewitt’s question of what we might expect as the consequences of defeat in Iraq.It is unfortunate; though not surprising that Andrew Sullivan would have qualms about General Petraeus ’ interview with Hugh Hewitt yesterday and chose to pre-emptively judge the move on the part of the general as “working from the agenda of extremist, Republican partisans.” This, he believes “renders Petraeus’ military independence ...
The "Stymied" NY Times and Democrats
2007-07-19 17:52:00
The NY Times editorial board is at it again with (italics mine) “Stymied by G.O.P., Democrats Stop Debate on Iraq:” “After Senate Republicans yet again thwarted a proposal to withdraw American troops from Iraq,…” Oh, wait…sorry, my bad…this colorful use of leading connotation is actually a “news” article. The article does however, have a nice and even-handed treatment of the debate with its “In Their Own Words: Comments from the Senate Floor” multi-media pop-up consisting of “words” from four Democrats and a Republican; so I guess we’re on balance there. The Editorial board is just a bit more judgmental, even with their lack of contemplation on all the “news that isn’t fit to print.” “The nation’s anguish over the Iraq war was kept on hold in the Senate yesterday as the Republican minority maintained serial threats of filibuster to buy time for President Bush’s aimless policies.” Sadly for the nation and the paper an at...

Let's Not Forget Other Costs in the Recent Democrat Off-Broadway Production
2007-07-18 19:55:00
While the sleepover took place and the theatrics were going full bore sans fireworks, while the Democrat s or Reid’s Rosies moaned of the “distraction” that Iraq is from “real” terror the world continues to spin. Iran and it’s proxies in Iraq and elsewhere in the region have been all but forgotten. This is one of those subjects of debate the media aids and abets the Democrat party as it tries to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes. There are so many pieces to this war on terror that regardless of size need to be addressed; Pakistan, Afghanistan, Israel, Syria, Lebanon and elsewhere. It all continues apace. The Rosies apply the makeup, have their jammies pressed, teeth brushed and put on their latest off-Broadway hit; who says sequels can’t draw in the crowds. “Negotiations” with the IAEA continue with Iran as the lead in the show recites his practiced lines. In Consideration of Hunkering Down and Waiting
2007-06-18 18:24:00
When one reads about discussions going on at the White House between State Department lifers and supposed Hawks within the Cheney circle and one of the contentious issues is that: the few remaining hawks inside the administration, especially those in Vice President Dick Cheney’s office who, according to some people familiar with the discussions, are pressing for greater consideration of military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities.” One has to wonder where do these “foggy bottom” people have their heads? I hear or read the moniker “foggy bottom,” and think; foggy, unclear and bottom. I see concerns like the ones they have there and think, ‘yes your thinking us unclear and you are somewhere near the bottom or that is where you brains are.’ A “greater consideration of military strikes,” is a concern? Why would a “consideration” be so offensive? Outsourcing the Iranian peaceful nuke talks to the EU-3 plus has resulted in bupkis; likewise o...

PayPerPost Works for Me
2007-06-17 16:38:00
I signed up with PayPerPost sometime in December of 2006, but did not do any posts until the end of May. Why is that? Well for one, my blog is a political one and the main drive for me is not for money as is the case with many others. I felt a degree of not being true to it if I did posts for the sake of money. That was the main reason for taking so long, but after doing my first, then second that reasoning doesn’t cut it. It’s actually fun and enjoyable. A “Postie,” as we are referred to can choose from available opportunities those that interest them or finds after doing a little research on one that ‘hey, this is a pretty cool product, book, movie etc.’ My second PayPerPost was for the new Police compilation CD and if I recall paid $8. Big whoop you might say, but that was for one post and I love The Police. So I get paid to do a PayPerPost about the reunion of a band I love, to write about their new CD and better yet? Iran Strategy being Debated at White House
2007-06-16 16:23:00
A year later, after beginning a new push for diplomatic negotiations with Iran along European lines debate is opening up within the Bush Administration as to whether this new tact is working. The NY Times article pits the debate as being between Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her department “against the few remaining hawks inside the administration, especially those in Vice President Dick Cheney’s office who, according to some people familiar with the discussions, are pressing for greater consideration of military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities.” In the year gone by the U.S. joined “forces” with the EU-3 along with Russia and China and Iran’s enrichment program has continued apace. In all fairness to the “hawks” “pressing for greater (italics mine) consideration of military strikes,” one has to seriously include the three prior years of the negotiations of the EU-3 and Iran. Just because the U.S. openly signed up does not mean negotia...

The Police 30th Anniversary World Tour 2007
2007-06-15 22:10:00
The Police on a world tour is something I honestly never expected; had I the money I would be all over the show that is coming to Phoenix on June 18 this summer. At this point of course I’d have to have a lot of money as tickets are sold out. Radio contests? Yep, I’m trying, but so is just about everyone else in the valley of the sun. The Police were ultimately my favorite band growing up. It was the bass lines in their music that led me to my interest in learning to play bass guitar; which to hours spent learning and playing along to the songs on their albums. It was the guitar skills of Andy Summers that brought me to the epiphany that guitar didn’t have to be insanely loud and continually obnoxiously upfront to be perfection. Summers has a way of making the right sound with that instrument that makes the music fit and flow. Using his skills as a musician and obvious knowledge of different sounds and styles contributes to the sound that is The Police. Stewart ...

Incendiary Rhetoric toward Iran
2007-06-15 20:35:00
Finally found the transcript to Hannity & Colmes interview with John Bolton regarding Gaza, Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran from last night (6/14/07). What do you know, I pop over to RealClear every day, except this morning and there it is. By all means read the entire transcript if you didn’t see the segment. I found one particular line of questioning from Alan Colmes that I found disturbing; if for nothing else, then for its naiveté: COLMES: If you're Iran, and you hear this incendiary rhetoric toward Iran from certain people in the United States about how we have to take military action, what would you do if you're Iran? BOLTON: Well, I wish they worried that much about me anymore, but I don't think that's really what motivates... COLMES: But you're not the only one saying this. Does Iran respond to this incendiary rhetoric? A lot of crosstalk when running short of time, but one last question/remark from Colmes; COLMES: But they're going to feel they've got to d...
