The U.S.’ Number One Spy
2007-05-02 16:38:00
The Times and Dems for the most part have always coined the NSA eavesdropping program as spying or domestic spying. Now, the next iteration of the program has straight referred to as “his spying program,” however this program is a ramp up of the 1978 FISA law; the FISA of course is what everyone in opposition called for. As the Times sees it: “For more than five years, President Bush authorized government spying on phone calls and e-mail to and from the United States without warrants.” “Mr. Bush’s motivations for submitting this bill now seem obvious. The courts have rejected his claim that 9/11 gave him virtually unchecked powers, and he faces a Democratic majority in Congress that is willing to exercise its oversight responsibilities. That, presumably, is why his bill grants immunity to telecommunications companies that cooperated in five years of illegal eavesdropping. It also strips the power to hear claims against the spying program from all courts except ...

Iran's Face Saving Offers to the U.S.
2007-04-30 17:42:00
According to The NY Times Iran will be attending THE regional conference on Iraq this week in Egypt, which is seen as: “setting the stage for the first cabinet-level meeting between Iran and the United States since the end of 2004.” Before talks between the U.S. and Iran can happen, Iran must cease and desist from “stirring up trouble,” including stoking the flames among the militias and weapons technology, which the Times describes as an effective “repetition of the accusations that have helped sour relations.” Optimism abounds for the verbose elite as: “some Western diplomats say both the United States and Iran are intensifying their search for face-saving approaches that would allow their standoff over the nuclear issue to soften enough to allow for substantial talks.” As Pelosi’s road to peace goes through Damascas, not Egypt; according to the Public Relations Department of the Expediency Council of Iran, Iraqs National Congress Party represent...

Friday Sermon from Iran - April 27, 2007
2007-04-27 22:22:00
Well, this week’s Frida y Sermon served to gently remind all those that would try to thwart Iran ’s “peaceful nuclear” enterprise was communicated by Substitute Friday prayers leader of Tehran Hojatoleslam Ahmad Khatami, of which a key thing to remember would be that: ‘"Despite all the anti-Iran resolutions, our president, while sponsoring nuclear festival, honorably showed that we have with God's grace gained remarkable progress and joined the nuclear club. The world should know that if they wish to talk with powerful Iran unconditionally, they should not violate its rights and if they want to continue bullying like the past, the talks would not be fruitful."’ Please note that a suggestion for unconditional peace in the greater Middle East was also remarked upon by the spiritual leader; which I’m sure will solve the regions problems: ‘"Instead of negotiating with the Israeli regime, the Arab states should talk to the Palestinian nation so as to garner divine co...

Answering the Question - A How To or WTF?
2007-04-27 20:49:00
Apologies up front as it's just kind of my mood today.Reading Byron York this morning regarding last nights Democrat Debate on MSNBC with Brian Williams asking and anticipating a military type response (I assume, but that’s from my war-mongering stance, I guess), Williams asked: ‘“If, God forbid, a thousand times, while we were gathered here tonight, we learned that two American cities had been hit simultaneously by terrorists and we further learned beyond the shadow of a doubt it had been the work of al Qaeda, how would you change the U.S. military stance overseas as a result?”’ I am struck by the responses received. This from Senator Barack Obama I will use as the sample: '“Well, first thing we’d have to do is make sure that we’ve got an effective emergency response, something that this administration failed to do when we had a hurricane in New Orleans. And I think that we have to review how we operate in the event of not only a natural disaster, but a...

North Korean Military Celebrations: Kim & the Gang, Keeping the Funk Al
2007-04-25 21:56:00
Today Kim and the Gang celebrated the North Korean People’s Army’s 75th birthday, which as described by the NY Times consisted of: “Columns of soldiers accompanied by missiles and rockets marched through Pyongyang today under the eyes of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, in a bold display of defiance by a country that has been engaged in a nuclear standoff with the United States.” The credit for the strong show of support is given, by the North Korean state run media to Kim and his “songun” or “army-first” policy. Songun policy dictates that the army comes first with regard to receipt of food, medical care and any other resources necessary. This policy is attributed to the strong feelings of nationalism in North Korea. This has “also stoked xenophobia among the North Koreans. It stressed a belief that the North Koreans were under attack from the Americans and that the only way out of their economic suffering was to build a strong military.” ...

GREAT NEWS!!! Iran Agrees to Talks
2007-04-25 18:06:00
It’s about time isn’t it? IRNA reports that according to Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani: “Iran welcomes correct and precise negotiations to settle ongoing disputes over its peaceful nuclear program.” “"We have always welcomed precise and correct talks to resolve the nuclear issue but the opposite side has set conditions leading to suspension of negotiations.” The head of the Iranian “negotiation” team will meet with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana. Further brightening the days ahead and the possibilities of resolution were these remarks from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: "The West has made a mistake and it needs to correct its mistake, while the entire world knows well that Iran's nuclear activities are both legal, and legitimate and many European officials have emphasized this point in their talks with us." "We are ready to enter talks in the presence of the press representatives, since we have a bad experience...

I’ve been accused by a resident of the Great White North (at the least, an institution geographically located somewhere up there) of being a Think ing Blogger . I take umbrage with this “label,” but this does not relieve me of my duty in identifying FIVE (although according to him, I must select six and then Update from there I’m back to five). In the interest of privacy and not impugning the innocent I will only refer to the guttersnipe (the tagger) at One Old Green Bus Blog as Matthew Didier (note, please disregard Sue at this about page; not that she is not worthy of attention, just that she does not deserve your scorn. I’m pretty sure she does the thoughtful posts anyway). What is a “Thinking blogger?” Good question. Based upon the Herculean efforts I put forth trying to find anything that may be considered of a thoughtful nature as posted by Matthew; I’m not so sure. I then spent the better part of the past week or so trying to discover, what if anythin...

Harry Reid and Dems – Victory through Loss
2007-04-24 17:11:00
Today in the Washington Post there is an article regarding the war-funding deal entitled: “Negotiators Agree on War-Funding Package.” Opening with: “House and Senate negotiators reached agreement yesterday on war-funding legislation that would begin bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq as early as July, setting a goal of ending U.S. combat operations by no later than March.” I wonder who these “negotiators” are and why this tidbit of information is not elaborated on. The implication in this title and opening is that it has all been agreed upon and it is only now going to await the intransigent president to veto. So, we’ll see who really cares about the troops. Further down though, if you feel like reading beyond the title and opening paragraph, it appears they are speaking of the Democrat negotiating team. “Democrats framed the deal reached yesterday as an effort to compromise with Bush.” Regarding the HUGE effort at compromise involved in the nego...

Nancy “Sonny Corleone” Pelosi & the Harry Reid Death Surge
2007-04-23 20:32:00
Nice short piece at NRO by Mackubin Thomas Owens, that opens with the following: “When Nancy Pelosi , the Speaker of the House of Representatives, trekked to Damascus not too long ago to meet with the thug dictator of Syria, it occurred to me that she was essentially taking a page from a scene in The Godfather — the one in which Sonny dissents from a decision made by his father, Don Corleone, during a meeting with a representative of another mafia family.” Suffice it to say, Sonny’s meeting with the opposing crime family led to the attempted assassination of the Don. The opposing family’s belief was that were Sonny in charge business between the two would be much easier. Owens is making the comparison between Pelosi and Reid and their comments or actions with those of the “insurgency” in Iraq. Knowing that winning in Iraq is more based upon how, we at home view the effort they seek to slaughter as many innocents as possible so that our backing for that theate...

Improvisation – Iraq’s Miles Davis – Kind of Blue
2007-04-23 16:55:00
“He has become a great improviser, the Mile s Davis of the war.”Edward Wong – NY Times.com In a vacuum, power is something so many and too many with different ideas about how something should be; fight for. Moktada al-sadr is one of those people. Where he is interested in an Iraq without outside involvement, he realizes the best bet for this scenario is to wait on the American efforts in Iraq to come to a somewhat stabilizing fruition. Like our Democrat leadership, although much less interested in an American defeat, a senior Iraqi official said of al-sadr: “Mr. Sadr’s thinking was in constant evolution, groping for a workable strategy for the war.” From the NY Times: “Perhaps nothing is more surprising than the fact that Mr. Sadr’s attitude toward the Americans actually reflects a degree of ambivalence.” “Anti-Americanism is the basis of his unflagging popularity. More than any other Iraqi politician, he is willing to recognize, validate and capitali...

Hillary Clinton to Look Under Carpet in Oval Office

Be Patient Harry, There’s Still Time to Lose
2007-04-20 22:16:00
In this mornings post from Sigmund, Carl & Alfred (posted somewhere at RCP, so vote for it) the question or better yet the subject under discussion is whether or not the horrific action taken by Cho Sueng Hui was “an act of terror or a crime.” In reading “Coming Full Circle: Crime and Terror,” I am struck by the ease of comparison with which, one can make between the killing spree of a mentally tapped individual and that of a belief system, namely Islamic extremism, that wishes to do us harm. Can what happened at Virginia Tech Monday serve as a microcosmic glimpse of a world as an example, can used as a means of discerning or envisioning what might happen on a global scale left untreated? The Iraq Theater has become just such a thing. From the beginning bitterly opposed by many on the Left and more forcefully so now; the battleground recently described by the Senate Majority leader, Harry “scared soiled” Reid, with “this war is lost.” Setting aside an intens...

Opinion on Opinion on Bush Challenged on Iraq - an Opinion
2007-04-19 20:07:00
I love opinion pieces especially when I have an opinion about one. Today’s Washington Post has a really fun one, entitled “Bush Challenge d on Iraq .” Something the public has never been able to see and judge for themselves is President Bush pissed off, angry, what ever you want to call it. Interesting because if you think about it, we don’t see a lot of politicians get pissed; it may just be passion, but that’s subjective isn’t it. This to Dan Froomkin is an example of the president’s “bubble.” “Bush is well known for living inside a protective bubble where accommodating staffers keep opposing views -- and those who hold them -- at bay.” Or Bush is well known for having a bubble around him as the media sees it. Or the media, in its insistence that the president lives in a bubble continues to view him as living in a bubble. Or the media, from within its bubble believe its actually the president that is in a bubble….. The “bristling” or ...

A Nation of Laws fit for the Likes of Cho Seung-Hui
2007-04-19 17:31:00
No, this isn’t about the “abortion foes,” and the Supreme Court ruling on late term abortion, medicinally referred to as “intact dilation and evacuation.” I’m talking about Iranian Supreme Court decision yesterday to overturn the murder convictions of six members of the Basiji Force, a state militia that comes under the control of the Revolutionary Guards. According to Iran’s Islamic penal code, “murder charges can be dropped if the accused can prove the killing was carried out because the victim was morally corrupt.” The accused or convicted six were involved in 2002 killing of five people in Kerman, Iran and based their decision to kill following their viewing a “tape by a senior cleric who ruled that Muslims could kill a morally corrupt person if the law failed to confront that person.” Further examples of moral corruption “permit bloodshed, including armed banditry, adultery by a wife and insults to the Prophet Muhammad.” Following the identifi...

Radical Islam…Coming to a Border Near You
2007-04-18 19:42:00
We have often been slandered in the polarized debate by those that disagree with us. I cannot speak for every member of the Coalition Against Illegal Immigration, but I likely would find much agreement within the community. We’re “anti-immigration,” “anti-immigrant,” “xenophobic,” “racist,” and on and on. My biggest gripe has been with those that want a “comprehensive” reform, which implies that it is thoughtful, humane and all encompassing. This side by side with the more “ignorant” appearing stance of guard the border is looked upon by the elite as pathetically and woefully misguided. No one, to my admittedly limited knowledge that is a member of the CAII claims this stance as their only offering to the debate. We all, when you get right down to it are interested in a “comprehensive” reform to the system; it is just in the manner and admittedly many of the details that we might disagree. My big complaint regarding the “comprehensive” ...

In this post: Iran ian weapons in Afghanistan; Ahmadinejad vows to cut off hands and Islamic fundamentalisms rise in Latin America. As we breathlessly await some type of action on the Ilsamic Republic of Iran by the UN, EU and others, the radical militancy of that regime continues to spread throughout the world. Not only does Iran support both Shia and Sunni elements in Iraq, but it also supports the Taliban in Afghanistan: “U.S. forces recently intercepted Iranian-made weapons intended for Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, the Pentagon's top general said Tuesday, suggesting wider Iranian war involvement in the region.” The Weapons discovered thus far include mortars and C-4, but no further information has been given as to other possible arms. It is not known at this time whether the weapons came directly from Iran or through a third party. Michael Rubin of the American Enterprise Institute said yesterday: "Iran's leadership often strikes pragmatic relationshi...

Both of her parents were killed, along with many of her siblings, and she had been shot in the head and left for dead. But she was tougher than that. She was brought to Balad Air Base Hospital where she was operated on and ultimately saved. As you can imagine, it was an extremely hard time for this little girl. Her recovery was hellish. As a Nation Mourns the World still Turns
2007-04-17 17:52:00
Not to be crass or imply that I have no heart and do not care; but as the 24/7 news cycle has turned its attention from Anna Nicolle, Don Imus and the rest; Iran has not gone away, nor North Korea but that is for a later post. We do need to take time to mourn and/or say prayers for those affected by this senseless slaughter. The media turns to wall to wall coverage of the tragic event; while those who would do us harm likely see this coverage as just another example of the Western lack of a stomach to address its own existence. While the world turns, Russian non-assistance is illustrated by Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the Russian State Duma International Affairs Committee: "The only scenario that should be completely ruled out is the military one, the use of force against Iran." President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, your friend and mine Mahmoud Ahmadinejad repeated the oft recited refrain yesterday: "The Iranian people will continue to defend its legitimate de...

North Korea No Show on first Deadline
2007-04-16 17:34:00
Odd that. North Korea is late or has missed its first deadline in the newest deal to with the U.S. and its multi-lateral negotiating party. According to The NY Times: “The first deadline for North Korea to shut down and seal its main facility for manufacturing nuclear weapons fuel expired Saturday with no apparent action by the North to fulfill its commitments.” China has asked the U.S. for patience. Ok, not like we have any other choice right? The Times get a dig in, with (italics mine): “The inaction leaves President Bush vulnerable to attacks from hawks in his own party, who have argued that it was a mistake to return $25 million in frozen funds to the North Koreans — much of it believed to be from illicit sales of counterfeit currency and missiles — and who doubt that the North Koreans will stop producing bomb fuel as well as give up all of its existing weapons.” Damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. But that said, allowing the release of t...

Iran – Kicking It up a Notch and Says No to Pelosi
2007-04-16 15:59:00
Being the attention whore that Iran has become, deputy head of the Atomic Energy Organization, Ahmad Fayazbakhsh announced: “Iran is launching two international tenders for the construction of two nuclear power stations of between 1,000 and 1,600 megawatts capacity in Bushehr.” They have already contacted Russian and European firms, but since Iran is under such tough UN sanctions it’s unclear whether they will get any decent offers. Personally, I don’t think they will have too much trouble in the bid department from Russian or EU firms: “European goods make up 44% of the Iran’s total imports which last year amounted to more than $16 billion. During that time the EU imported over $10 billion in merchandise from Iran. In addition European invests billions of dollars in Iranian oil, gas, mining, automotive, transportation and communications companies.” We’ll wait and see how this progresses. The EU had only milquetoast remarks regarding the “15 victi...

Debacle; Iraq is a debacle of epic proportions, doesn’t anyone have a better idea? Hasn’t the Right learned any lessons from Vietnam? Iran, and its democratically elected government; aren’t we about ready to talk yet? Engagement?...yes but to who or whom? Martin Luther King , Jr. had a dream and so, recently has Victor Davis Hanson: “I recently had a dream that British marines fought back, like their forefathers of old, against criminals and pirates. When taken captive, they proved defiant in their silence. When released, they talked to the tabloids with restraint and dignity, and accepted no recompense. I dreamed that a kindred German government, which best knew the wages of appeasement, cut-off all trade credits to the outlaw Iranian mullahs — even as the European Union joined the Americans in refusing commerce with this Holocaust-denying, anti-Semitic, and thuggish regime.NATO countries would then warn Iran that their next unprovoked attack on a vessel of a m...

Repeat a Lie Long Enough…and Sticking to It (with slight adjustments)
2007-04-12 19:42:00
Senator Joe Biden misses the mark when describing/responding to Senator John McCain’s OpEd of less than a week ago in the Washington Post. While acknowledging (diplomatically) McCain’s argument regarding the consequences of failure in Iraq, but to stick with a “failing policy” is a “mistake.” Senator Biden sees this as lacking reality and that really, “the problem is that for every welcome development, there is an equally or even more unwelcome development that gives lie to the claim that we are making progress.” He then goes on to cite examples, which you can read by visiting the “piece.” The problem I see with Mr. Biden’s logic is that with every action in LIFE, there is an “equally” welcome or unwelcome development to follow; oftentimes not in a singular fashion (if very lucky it will be singular; most times it’s exponentially, but I won’t get into the math of it as I don’t like math). As individuals we face consequences for our decisions an...

We have NO Reason to Fear Iran or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love
2007-04-11 20:36:00
I don’t quite understand what has gotten under Tony Blankley’s craw. At Real Clear Politics today he takes issue with the continuation of the Iran ian “peaceful nuclear” program. Railing at the media for not covering the news of Mondays “Iranian Nuclear Festival,” which is disingenuous when one considers that according to IRNA – “some 600 domestic and foreign reporters,” including mind you the BBC, CNN and Al-Alam; were present filming the festivities LIVE. Blankley, pisses and moans about Iran, when the problem is really just that of a mathematical algorithm (has nothing to do w/a former VP of the US on a dance floor*). Mr. Blankley carelessly throws out numbers: Last year Iran revealed having 164 centrifuges Prior to Monday it was believed they had only 328 centrifuges Unknown quantity represented as X Monday Iran boasted at having = 3,000 centrifu...
