Child slavery - 21st century style
2007-04-10 18:35:00 Will you be tucking into a chocolate Easter egg this weekend? If so, you might want to consider how the chocolate has been produced. According to this story on the BBC News website, many thousands of children work long hours for no pay and little food on cocoa plantations in West Africa. The International Labour Organisation reports that 12,000 children have been trafficked to the Ivory Coast for this purpose. The ILO is campaigning to eliminate child labour. http://www.leithjb.net/blog/2007/04/07/ch ild-slavery-21st-century-style/ Powered by Qumana More About: Slavery , Style , Cent , Child , Slave

Child weavers / labour and the poverty
2007-03-31 19:23:00 This girl child is from Uttar Pradesh India This short film shows how families use their children to earn for the family. A girl child in this video clip adds nearly 55 cents per day to her family income. How can we expect a family to send children to schools for education when their earning is less than a dollor per day. Simply bringing resolution or laws is not enough to eliminate child labour rather the planners should work the methods and policies to generate rural employment that generates enough income to spend and send child for study. Simply saying child labour as crime is easy and poetic. we need to understand the darkness behind this activities. We need to win over the reasons behind parents seeking their children for income. CHILD LABOUR TODAY: FACTS AND FIGURES (corrystuart.com)
2007-03-31 19:05:00 Although the internationally recommended minimum age for work is 15 years (ILO Convention No. 138) and the number of child workers under the age of 10 is far from negligible, almost all the data available on child labour concerns the 10-to-14 age group. Combining various official sources, the ILO estimates that more than 73 million children in that age group alone were economically active in 1995, representing 13.2 per cent of all 10-to-14 year olds around the world. http://www.corrystuart.com/slavechildfact s.html Powered by Qumana More About: Facts , Today , Fact , Labour , Stuart
