Japan opposition leader 'to stay'
2007-11-06 17:40:00 Ichiro Ozawa, the leader of Japan 's main opposition party, has withdrawn his resignation at the request of his colleagues, officials have said. Mr Ozawa had said he would resign as head of the Democratic Party of Japan after it vetoed a power-sharing offer with the ruling coalition. The government offered the plan to push through laws renewing Japan's mandate for a US-led mission in Afghanistan. This is the latest of a series of crises to hit Japanese politics. 'One more go' The two main parties are currently deadlocked over whether to carry on supporting the Afghan mission by refuelling warships in the Indian Ocean. The mandate for their support operations ran out on 1 November. The government wants to continue, but the opposition - which controls the upper house of parliament - has made clear it intends to block the move. Disagreement over the issue was one of the main reasons which led Shinzo Abe to resign from his post as prime minister in September. New Prime Minister Yasuo ...
In God's name. Religion will play a big role in this century's World Politi
2007-11-02 21:11:00 The four-hour journey through the bush from Kano to Jos in northern Nigeria features many of the staples of African life: checkpoints with greedy soldiers, huge potholes, scrawny children in football shirts drying rice on the road. But it is also a journey along a front-line. Nigeria, evenly split between Christians and Muslims, is a country where people identify themselves by their religion first and as Nigerians second. Around 20,000 have been killed in God's name since 1990, estimates Shehu Sani, a local chronicler of religious violence. Kano, the centre of the Islamic north, introduced sharia law seven years ago. Many of the Christians who fled ended up in Jos, the capital of Plateau state, where the Christian south begins. The road between the two towns is dotted with competing churches and mosques. This is one of many religious battlefields in this part of Africa. Evangelical Christians, backed by American collection-plate money, are surging northwards, clashing with Islamic ... The new wars of religion
2007-11-02 21:02:00 A religious fanatic feels persecuted, goes overseas to fight for his God and then returns home to attempt a bloody act of terrorism. Next week as Britons celebrate the capture of Guy Fawkes, a Catholic jihadist, under the Houses of Parliament in 1605, they might reflect how dismally modern the Gunpowder Plot and Europe's wars of religion now seem. Back in the 20th century, most Western politicians and intellectuals (and even some clerics) assumed religion was becoming marginal to public life; faith was largely treated as an irrelevance in foreign policy. Symptomatically, State Department diaries ignored Muslim holidays until the 1990s. In the 21st century, by contrast, religion is playing a central role. From Nigeria to Sri Lanka, from Chechnya to Baghdad, people have been slain in God's name; and money and volunteers have poured into these regions. Once again, one of the world's great religions has a bloody divide (this time it is Sunnis and Shias, not Catholics and Protestants)... More About: Religion , Wars
Rice promises US intervention against PKK
2007-11-02 20:49:00 Condoleezza Rice today promised that the United States would intensify action against Kurdish rebels whom she labelled a common enemy of Turkey and the US. The US Secretary of State, in Ankara to discuss the growing border crisis between the Turkish Government and the Kurdistan Workers鈥 Party (PKK), pledged that Washington would increase its pressure on the Iraqi Government to take concrete steps against the rebels. Turkey has repeatedly threatened to launch a military incursion against PKK targets across the border in northern Iraq unless US and Iraqi officials take meaningful action against Kurdish separatists. Ms Rice was today pushing for a breakthrough in negotiations between the three governments who are trying to agree a joint clampdown on the PKK, but she failed to detail any American proposals.鈥淲e want to look to a plan for effective action against the PKK that will require not just the US and Turkey but also the Iraqi Government,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat is a discussion I ... Iran faces new sanctions threat
2007-11-02 20:41:00 Six world powers have agreed to draft a third resolution for sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme. The UN Security Council will vote on the draft if UN and EU reports say Tehran's programme is continuing, the officials said after talks in London. Officials from the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany will meet on 19 November to assess the reports. Iran says its programme is for peaceful purposes only and denies accusations it is trying to develop nuclear weapons. In September, the permanent members of the Security Council agreed to delay a vote on further measures until the publication of a report in mid-November on Iran's activities by the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA]. At Friday's meeting, the officials agreed to ask the EU's foreign policy chief Javier Solana to hold a further meeting with Iran's chief nuclear negotiator and report back. The officials "agreed to finalise a text for a third UN Security Council sanct... More About: Faces , Sanctions , Threat
Japan's War on Terror comes to a halt
2007-11-01 02:09:00 An unprecedented political impasse has all but ended Japan鈥檚 active part in the War on Terror and may have triggered the countdown to an early general election next spring. Tokyo will be forced tomorrow to suspend indefinitely its controversial military presence in the Indian Ocean after months of bitter feuding and the surprise resignation of a prime minister. After pumping nearly half a million kilolitres of oil to a variety of allied vessels over the past six years, the supply ship Tokiwa has performed what was probably its last task of the mission: filling the fuel tanks of a Pakistani naval destroyer. Racing vainly against a deadline that expires tomorrow at midnight, Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda yesterday failed to win parliamentary approval for a law that would have extended Japan鈥檚 practical support for the coalition efforts in Afghanistan. Although the Government said that the setback was unlikely to cause permanent harm to Japan-US relations, it underlines the continuing... More About: War On Terror
Brown in 'positive' Saudi talks
2007-11-01 01:58:00 Gordon Brown 's talks with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia were very positive, British officials have said. They say there was a "meeting of minds" in the discussions which included the Middle East peace process and a planned US-sponsored peace conference. Officials said human rights were not raised at the meeting between the prime minister and the king at Number 10. Protests have taken place over Saudi Arabia's human rights record and arms deals during the king's state visit. Saudi leadership Mr Brown and King Abdullah discussed their expectations for the peace conference in Maryland but the monarch did not give a clear indication whether his country would be represented. The prime minister emphasised the importance the UK attaches to Saudi leadership in the Middle East. They both agreed that a viable Palestinian state was key to a solution in the region.Counter-terrorism was discussed and the prime minister thanked the king for Saudi efforts on the issue.
Kirchner victory in Argentine election
2007-10-30 01:19:00 Yesterday's victory by Cristina Fern谩ndez Kirchner in Argentina's presidential election is historic. She becomes the first woman to be elected president of Argentina, and December 10 will mark the first time anywhere that a president will hand over the sash of office to his wife after a democratic vote. Yet it was an election campaign marked by apathy, and after last night's victory there were few of the popular celebrations that have followed similar historic votes in other South American countries in recent years. This is in part because the Government worked so hard to create the impression that the race was a foregone conclusion. Partly it is because the fragmented Opposition did so much to help them in this, failing to convince anyone that they were ready for power. Turnout was the lowest since 1928 in a country where voting is compulsory. The Kirchners will point to the economic record of President N茅stor Kirchner to explain his wife's victory. He has overseen more than ... More About: Victory , Election , Argentine , Gent
Biofuels 'crime against humanity'
2007-10-27 17:05:00 A United Nations expert has condemned the growing use of crops to produce biofuels as a replacement for petrol as a crime against humanity. The UN special rapporteur on the right to food, Jean Ziegler, said he feared biofuels would bring more hunger. The growth in the production of biofuels has helped to push the price of some crops to record levels. Mr Ziegler's remarks, made at the UN headquarters in New York, are clearly designed to grab attention. He complained of an ill-conceived dash to convert foodstuffs such as maize and sugar into fuel, which created a recipe for disaster. Food price rises It was, he said, a crime against humanity to divert arable land to the production of crops which are then burned for fuel. He called for a five-year ban on the practice. Within that time, according to Mr Ziegler, technological advances would enable the use of agricultural waste, such as corn cobs and banana leaves, rather than crops themselves to produce fuel. The growth in the productio... More About: Crime , Humanity , Biofuels , Fuels
Putin compares US shield to Cuban Missile Crisis
2007-10-27 00:38:00 Russian President Vladimir Putin has compared US plans for a missile shield in Europe to the Cuban missile crisis of the 1960s. The crisis saw the US and Soviet Union go to the brink of nuclear war. Mr Putin, at a summit with EU leaders in Portugal, said the situation was "technologically similar". But he argued there would be no repeat because Russia and the US were "not enemies anymore... we are partners" and President Bush was a "personal friend". The 1962 stand-off was triggered when US spy planes discovered Soviet missile bases in Cuba, within striking distance of the American mainland. Moscow's decision to deploy these weapons in Cuba was at the time seen as a response to the build-up of powerful US missiles in Europe. Tensions were only defused when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to dismantle the bases in return for guarantees that Washington would not attack communist Cuba. 'Similar situation' US President George W Bush has said there is a "real and urgent" need f... More About: Crisis , Shield , Missile
Turkish PM threatens Iraq action 'at any time'
2007-10-23 21:22:00 The Turkish Prime Minister today insisted he could launch military action against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq "at any time" unless cross-border attacks are halted. As troops continued to mass on the Iraqi border, Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a press conference at Downing Street that his Government "cannot wait forever" for the raids by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) against his military to stop. However, Gordon Brown continued to urge a diplomatic solution to solve the border crisis today, pledging that the UK would step up counter-terrorism assistance to its ally. And there were signs that the pressure on Turkey not to launch a fully-blown invasion was beginning to bear fruit today, with the Iraqi Foreign Minister announcing that his Government would help to stop attacks by the PKK, after meeting his Turkish counterpart in Baghdad. Mr Erdogan, however, said Turkish patience with international pledges to stop the cross-border attacks was wearing thin. Last weekend, a rebel ambus... More About: Action , Time , Threat
